- Chapter 7 - Eye Masks, Games
Gu Fei didn’t know what state of mind she was in by the time she reached the bedroom door.
Staring at the closed door, she blinked, realizing her eyes felt incredibly sore and her heart was heavy with a suffocating sense of grievance.
She paused mid-motion as she reached for the handle. Her mind replayed Song Yanran’s avoidance and coldness from earlier that day. All the details she had instinctively ignored now came rushing back, triggered by Auntie Sun’s words.
Her eyes began to well up. Biting her lip, Gu Fei tapped twice on the door.
The door opened almost instantly. Before she heard a voice, Gu Fei was met by the faint, gentle fragrance that always clung to her.
A single tear escaped her eye and splashed onto the floor.
“You’re back?”
Song Yanran, still unaware of the gravity of the situation, spoke softly as she stood by the door, patiently waiting for Gu Fei to enter.
She had received responses to several articles she submitted today, but she realized that besides a contact email, she needed a bank card to receive payments. Without identification, she would undoubtedly need Gu Fei’s help again.
“What’s wrong?”
Gu Fei’s silence lasted a bit too long. Frowning slightly, Song Yanran stepped closer.
She lifted her palm, instinctively wanting to touch Gu Fei’s downcast cheek, but she stopped herself at the last second, exercising restraint.
“Qingwei”
Seeing those hands retreat again, Gu Fei felt even more aggrieved. She thought Qin Qingwei didn’t even want to touch her anymore.
“What happened?”
Hearing the nasal tone in her voice, Song Yanran’s brow furrowed deeper. Hesitating briefly, she reached out and gently tilted Gu Fei’s chin up.
In an instant, Gu Fei’s red-rimmed eyes and the tear tracks on her cheeks were clear to see.
“Why are you crying?”
Song Yanran’s thumb instinctively wiped away a tear. At this moment, she completely forgot the principles she had set for herself; her heart was filled only with uncontrollable tenderness and pity for Gu Fei.
The gentler she was, the redder Gu Fei’s eyes became, and the more chaotic her heart felt.
Clearly, Song Yanran had been cold and avoidant during the day, yet right now, the distress and love in her eyes were so vivid and moving.
It left Gu Fei a bit confused. Does Qin Qingwei only like it when I cry? The sadder I am, the softer she gets? Is she actually that kind of “bad woman”?
A mess of thoughts swirled in her head, but at the very least, Gu Fei felt a little more secure than she had moments ago.
“Is it that you don’t actually like me that much? Are you planning to ask for a divorce in a while?”
Gu Fei reached up to hold the fingertips that were wiping her tears. She stared straight at her.
While Song Yanran’s eyes were still wide with lingering shock and pity, Gu Fei took a step forward, forcing Song Yanran to instinctively back up.
Thud.
The door closed behind them, but neither had the mind to care.
“I have no such intention.”
In the quiet room, facing Gu Fei’s persistent and heartbroken gaze, Song Yanran responded softly.
Whether it was the real Qin Qingwei or herself, neither had that thought.
Clearly, Gu Fei didn’t quite believe her.
“But you don’t remember my birthday. We’ve only been married for a month, and you already forgot my birthday.”
The grip on Song Yanran’s fingertips tightened involuntarily as Gu Fei voiced her accusation with red eyes.
Song Yanran’s eyelashes fluttered. She opened her mouth to speak, but after a long pause, she could only whisper: “I’m sorry.”
To “forget” implies that one once knew. For Song Yanran, before today, she hadn’t even had the chance to know when Gu Fei’s birthday was.
“I won’t forget again,” Song Yanran promised instinctively, seeing how Gu Fei’s nose was flushed with grievance.
“Okay. I forgive you.”
After staring into Song Yanran’s eyes for a long time, Gu Fei couldn’t help but wrap her arms around her waist, burying her face against the crook of her neck.
“I was at fault too. I shouldn’t have rejected you last night. Wife, I’m sorry.”
Song Yanran, who had no idea what actually happened last night, tilted her head slightly. After a moment, she bit back the urge to correct the title or ask further questions.
To preserve Qin Qingwei’s marriage, she could temporarily accept being called “Wife.”
From an angle Gu Fei couldn’t see, Song Yanran reached back to embrace her, a trace of irrepressible tenderness appearing on her lips.
That was, until she saw Gu Fei’s long, fair fingers holding a strangely familiar small box.
“Wife, I’ll carry these with me from now on. I won’t hurt you again, don’t worry.”
Song Yanran’s face flushed crimson instantly. Her legs shifted slightly, and after a long silence, she gave a low response that betrayed no emotion.
During dinner, Gu Lian didn’t come downstairs. After eating with Auntie Sun, Gu Fei led Song Yanran back to the second floor, leaving Auntie Sun behind to watch their intimate figures with a gratified smile.
Inside the room, when Song Yanran saw Gu Fei instinctively lock the door, her earlobes turned an unnatural shade of red.
She had originally intended to sleep in a separate room tonight. But after what just happened, she felt that asking for that now would definitely make Gu Fei cry, and she lacked the courage to follow through.
“Are you looking at my old photo albums?”
Unlike Song Yanran’s heavy thoughts, Gu Fei was already back to her usual self, her attention drawn to the open album on the desk.
The recent events made her realize that there were still issues to iron out in her relationship with Qin Qingwei. This was likely an unavoidable flaw in a “flash marriage” couple.
But Gu Fei believed that as long as they loved each other, they would eventually handle it. She wasn’t in a rush.
“Yes. I saw it in the drawer this afternoon and took it out.”
Behind her, Song Yanran’s gaze also fell on the thick album. It contained all the photos from Gu Fei’s birth until her high school graduation.
Song Yanran had looked at it for a long time this afternoon, feeling a sense of regret.
She wasn’t the first personality to meet Gu Fei, nor was she the one who could openly reveal her identity and stay by her side.
In that album, the only thing that made her feel like she had participated in Gu Fei’s life was a photo of Gu Fei playing the violin by the campus lake in high school. That was also Song Yanran’s first memory of being in close proximity to her.
“Wife”
While she was lost in thought, Gu Fei hugged her affectionately from behind and whispered in her ear.
“Can I see how your recovery is going down there?”
“There’s no need.”
Her ears turned red again. Song Yanran felt the soft weight of Gu Fei leaning against her and found it difficult to respond.
“I’ve been worried all day. Wife”
Gu Fei didn’t give up, acting spoiled as her voice grew even softer.
“Just a look. Is it really not okay?”
“Really, it’s”
Just as Song Yanran was about to hold her ground, Gu Fei went for a direct hit, suppressing her own shyness.
“If you don’t agree, I’m going to cry. Wife, do you have the heart to watch me cry twice in one night?”
As she said this, Gu Fei carefully observed Song Yanran’s expression. She wanted to know if her wife was truly the “bad woman” she suspected.
Song Yanran’s throat moved. Under Gu Fei’s strangely nervous and expectant gaze, Song Yanran parted her lips, a very faint smile flickering in her eyes.
“I do.”
Having realized Gu Fei was “threatening” her, Song Yanran didn’t fall for it this time. She simply tapped Gu Fei’s nose with her fingertip.
“Be good. I’m going to take a shower first. You can wait until I come out to cry.”
She paused, her smile becoming tender and affectionate.
“It’ll make it easier for me to coax you.”
Gu Fei watched her walk into the bathroom, her ears burning red. Her gaze drifted around the room until she saw the medicine boxes on the nightstand.
It was the two ointments she had bought at the hospital this morning. One showed signs of having been opened and used, while the other—the one meant for internal application—was still in its original packaging.
Frowning slightly, Gu Fei opened the internal ointment and walked toward the bathroom.
With a light knock on the door, she turned the handle.
“Wife, why haven’t you used this medicine? Ah!”
Before Gu Fei could finish, a bath towel was unceremoniously dropped over her head, blocking her vision entirely.
“You!”
Song Yanran, who never expected Gu Fei to barge straight in, stood in the bathroom feeling so embarrassed she wished she could switch personalities on the spot.
“You won’t even let me watch you shower anymore”
Gu Fei, unable to understand the hesitation, stood obediently in place and complained in a small voice.
Ignoring the complaint, Song Yanran looked at the medicine in Gu Fei’s hand. The shame she had just managed to suppress surged back up.
“It doesn’t hurt anymore, so I didn’t apply it.”
She forced her voice to stay steady and calm.
“You have to apply it even if it doesn’t hurt. That’s what the doctor said.”
Gu Fei reached up to touch the towel on her head, hesitating whether to take it off.
“I know it’s inconvenient for you to apply it inside yourself. I’ll help you.”
Gu Fei sighed helplessly, her tone gentle and coaxing, like she was talking to a child. Although Qin Qingwei was several years older than her, she seemed less composed than Gu Fei right now. Even applying medicine required coaxing.
“Wife, be a little more cooperative, or I’ll keep worrying.”
If you’re so worried, don’t be so heavy-handed next time.
Song Yanran looked at the oblivious Gu Fei with a complex expression, feeling a silent, jealous pang in her heart. She wasn’t the one who got to enjoy it, yet she was the one bearing the pain.
At that thought, Song Yanran felt a bit overwhelmed, her gaze losing its calm.
“Wife? Can I take this off now?”
Gu Fei was still holding the ointment, waiting for an answer.
“No wonder you wouldn’t let me look earlier. Is it actually still very painful? Wife, is it swoll”
“Wait.”
Predicting the embarrassing words about to come out of Gu Fei’s mouth, Song Yanran interrupted her with a red face. Wrapping a bathrobe loosely around herself, she grabbed Gu Fei’s wrist and led her out.
A few minutes later, Gu Fei felt the towel being removed from her head, but it was immediately replaced by something else that blocked her vision.
“You can help me with the medicine only if you wear this.”
It was Song Yanran’s voice, speaking softly right in front of her.
Gu Fei reached up to touch it. Her fingertips brushed past her own nose before settling on the eye mask.
Associating this with something else, Gu Fei’s face flushed.
“Is this a new game for tonight?”
Song Yanran let out a helpless, gentle laugh and hooked a finger under Gu Fei’s nose.
“What kind of messy things are going through your head? You’re getting less and less well-behaved.”
“It’s not?”
Gu Fei rubbed her burning earlobes awkwardly.
“I thought it was another blindfold game like last night.”
The smile on Song Yanran’s face faltered. She stared at the eye mask on Gu Fei’s face and eventually spoke in a quiet voice.
“Last night? The game at the bar?”
“Yeah. Are we not playing tonight?”
Unaware that she was being pumped for information, Gu Fei tentatively reached forward to hold Song Yanran’s fingertips.
Looking down at their interlaced fingers, Song Yanran pursed her lips with a complex expression. Gu Yi really is something.
“Wife?”
Receiving no response, Gu Fei moved closer until her arms could encircle Song Yanran’s waist.
“Weren’t you going to help me with the medicine? So, we can’t play games today.”
With the back of her knees against the edge of the bed, Song Yanran put her arms around Gu Fei’s waist and brought her down onto the bed.
“Okay. I’ll listen to my wife.”
Gu Fei propped herself up on her arms, careful not to crush her, and nodded softly. “Let’s start.”
In the darkness Gu Fei couldn’t see, Song Yanran reached out to turn off the bedroom lights and untied her bathrobe.
“Okay.”
Gu Fei knelt by the bedside for a moment, clutching the ointment, and spoke up in a small voice.
“Wife, could you help me open that box of finger cots on the table?”
Song Yanran’s brow twitched. In the darkness, she stared at her with a red face.
“Isn’t this just for medicine?”
“Yes, but I can’t see right now. I’m worried that using a cotton swab might be too clumsy and hurt you. I think using a finger cot is better so I can feel. Or, Wife, would you allow me to take the eye mask off?”
Song Yanran, starting to regret her impulsiveness tonight, silently closed her eyes.
