- Chapter 69 - Protecting the Master
After coaxing the cat, Liu Fenyun and Lian Yi returned to the guest hall and sat down.
Yu Qingyue had already signed a promissory note for Xiao Yingluan. The Xuanmo (Black Panther/Cat) agreed to be taken away before leaving, it even waved a paw at Xiao Yingluan to signal her not to worry.
Following them to the door, Xiao Yingluan didn’t forget to remind it: “A-Xuan, you must listen to Sister Qi and not be mean or bite anyone!”
On the way back, Liu Fenyun constantly felt the kitty beside her releasing a wave of intimidation toward the Xuanmo.
The Xuanmo lay nestled in Yu Qingyue’s arms, completely unresponsive to Lian Yi’s intimidation. When it felt Lian Yi glaring, it would glare back unceremoniously.
Observing the small friction between them, Liu Fenyun quickly found an opportunity to stand between her Master and Lian Yi to prevent the cat from getting worked up and hurting her health.
Unexpectedly, the Xuanmo took this chance to tug at her sleeve. When she looked over in shock, it let out a soft “meow,” as if trying to curry favor.
Liu Fenyun really wanted to know why it was so focused on her, perhaps because of her status as “Lord God”? After all, the Xuanmo was also known as the “Gate of God,” capable of transcending time and space like a deity. Perhaps this little fellow really had encountered a god before.
But she would have to wait until Lian Yi wasn’t around to ask.
Pretending not to notice the Xuanmo’s advances, Liu Fenyun took Lian Yi’s hand and said apologetically to Yu Qingyue, “Master, I promised Yiyi I’d take her for a stroll on the streets.”
Understanding that they wanted some private time, Yu Qingyue nodded. “Go ahead, no need to worry about me.”
The group split up at Guanhua Alley. Lian Yi looked back at Yu Qingyue’s retreating figure, inevitably worried: “Will Physician Yu suddenly faint halfway?”
“Not for the time being,” Liu Fenyun shook her head. “It’s not far from Wutong Pavilion, we don’t need to worry.”
Lian Yi accepted this half-doubtingly. Looking around, she hooked her arm into Liu Fenyun’s and asked, “So where are we going to wander now?”
Liu Fenyun pondered for a moment, opened the system map, and discovered that the two “red-named” assassins she had been tracking were nearby. Fortunately, they weren’t following her Master. She blurted out, “To catch assassins.”
Lian Yi was startled. “Huh? Didn’t you say you were taking me shopping?”
“We can shop along the way!” Liu Fenyun explained guiltily.
“Assassins sent by Qi Ran?” Lian Yi didn’t object to catching assassins and followed her, asking as they walked.
Liu Fenyun hummed in affirmation. “It should just be the pair with the bow and arrow left. The only auras I can sense are theirs.”
Ever since she formed her Demon Core, the range of the system map had expanded significantly, and she had even unlocked a strange skill called [Aura Tracking]. It seemed to be a natural talent of the demon race, providing her with much convenience.
As more petals of the Green Ghost Lotus bloomed, Liu Fenyun felt the demonic energy in her body increase, and her five senses grew sharper.
“Are we just going there empty-handed?” Lian Yi saw her walking straight down the long street without stopping and couldn’t help but ask, “Did you bring your blade? I’m not good at fighting.”
Liu Fenyun looked back at her silently, not believing a single word about her “not being good at fighting.”
The kitty wasn’t bad at it, she was just lazy.
At this moment, the two assassins under Qi Ran had disguised themselves as commoners, their faces covered, heading toward Wutong Pavilion.
“Is the boss here?” the archer assassin asked expressionlessly.
The arrow-wielding assassin nodded, glancing at a small, sealed transparent box in her palm. She whispered, “The guiding insect points here, there can be no mistake. We’ll be there soon.”
The two assassins were actually a pair of siblings, death guards trained by the Gehua Imperial Family. The brother, Ge Yu, was responsible for drawing the invisible bow, and the sister, Ge Yan, was responsible for condensing the invisible arrows. They were Qi Ran’s most trusted subordinates.
Having received his sister’s confirmation, Ge Yu remained silent.
The two traveled one after the other in silence. Suddenly, two dense waves of demonic energy surged from ahead. Ge Yan reacted first, her right hand snapping open. Five invisible needles instantly condensed at her fingertips and flew toward the intruders.
However, the invisible needles all struck a barrier, revealing their physical outlines before dissipating into nothingness.
Behind the barrier, Lian Yi’s eyes widened as she looked at the siblings who had assumed combat stances. She said to Liu Fenyun, “They really are here!”
Both Ge Yu and Ge Yan had seen Liu Fenyun’s portrait and had seen the “real Liu Fenyun” at the Summer Moon Festival. Even if Liu Fenyun had transformed into a woman, they recognized her.
Now that the four had met on the street, the siblings instinctively recalled Qi Ran’s mission and immediately prepared to kill Liu Fenyun.
Noticing Ge Yu making the motion to draw a bow, Liu Fenyun grabbed Lian Yi. “Move! There are too many people here.”
Clearly, the siblings didn’t want to attract the attention of passersby either, so they leaped into pursuit.
Liu Fenyun intentionally led the two toward Wutong Pavilion, where royal guards were stationed. Her plan was to have the guards capture the two assassins without her having to expend much effort.
However, Ge Yan noticed they were heading toward Wutong Pavilion and immediately condensed three darts, flinging them at Lian Yi to prevent their escape.
Lian Yi’s ears were sharp, the moment she heard the sharp objects cutting through the air, she turned to cast a spell. But Liu Fenyun was faster, she scooped up a shard of tile from the ground and flicked it out, knocking away the invisible darts before hurling another shard at Ge Yan.
Ge Yu instantly stepped in front of his sister, drawing his waist blade to parry the tile. However, Liu Fenyun had attached an Earth Talisman to it. The moment the tile was deflected, it turned into a glob of mud, slapping wetly onto Ge Yu’s face with a splat.
Death guards were trained never to show emotion, so Ge Yu only froze for a second. Realizing the two were about to run again, he wiped the mud from his eyes and followed silently.
While pursuing their target, Ge Yan kept her attention on the guiding insect. Sensing it wriggling excitedly, she grabbed her brother’s sleeve. “Stop chasing.”
Ge Yu stopped immediately.
“Hide. We’ll follow them to see where the boss is,” Ge Yan commanded.
Back at Wutong Pavilion
Once they reached the vicinity of Wutong Pavilion, Liu Fenyun noticed on her map that the two red dots had veered off elsewhere, though their target remained the Pavilion. She couldn’t help but grow wary.
Lian Yi was panting heavily. Seeing Liu Fenyun standing in the courtyard dazed, she walked over and hugged Liu Fenyun’s arm, too exhausted to speak.
Feeling the warmth on her arm, Liu Fenyun snapped back to reality and hurriedly helped Lian Yi into the building.
Lian Yi’s stamina was still lacking; the short sprint had turned her already pale face even whiter. Filled with guilt, Liu Fenyun sat her down on the couch to rest. “You rest first. I’ll go find Master and Priest Luo.”
This time, Lian Yi didn’t refuse; she simply waved her hand, signaling her to go.
Liu Fenyun had intended to warn her Master and Luo Binglun to be on guard against an ambush. However, shortly after leaving the room, she saw the two red dots change direction and move slowly toward her own living quarters.
Only the exhausted Lian Yi was in that room. Liu Fenyun’s expression darkened instantly, and she turned back immediately.
She returned just in time. Outside the window, Ge Yu and Ge Yan had already begun drawing their bow. Liu Fenyun reached the couch, but before she could take any defensive measures, an Invisible Arrow streaked through the window!
The arrow was enchanted with a silencing spell, it didn’t even make a sound as it aimed straight for Lian Yi’s heart. Liu Fenyun saw the trajectory on her system map and instinctively shielded Lian Yi with her body.
With a crisp crack, the invisible arrow pierced the “Feather Shield” on Liu Fenyun’s body and shattered the moment it broke through.
Lian Yi screamed in terror, and Liu Fenyun was also badly shaken. She thought she was about to be wounded, but she hadn’t expected the “Feather Shield” her Master gave her before the festival to still be effective!
Steadying herself, Liu Fenyun quickly turned to protect Lian Yi and was about to comfort her when she saw Lian Yi’s deep blue eyes instantly turn a ghostly green. Lian Yi raised a hand and pointed toward the window. The room plunged into darkness as a barrier expanded, isolating everything from the outside world.
“Due to the host’s ‘near-death’ illusion, Lian Yi’s Blackening Value has increased to 90 points!” the system warned. “Forced Imprisonment Protection Mode activated.”
Liu Fenyun had never experienced such a sudden spike in blackening. While she wondered how such a mode could be triggered, the frantic kitty dove into her arms, her trembling hands stroking Liu Fenyun’s body over and over.
“Does it hurt? Can you bear it?” Lian Yi asked between sobs, her voice thick with tears. “Why is there so much blood…”
Liu Fenyun was bewildered. She specifically touched the area where the Feather Shield had broken, there was no wound at all.
Has the kitty’s blackening value jumped so high that she’s hallucinating?
“I’m not hurt, don’t be afraid,” she comforted as the crying in her arms grew louder. “I’m really not hurt, and I’m not bleeding. The Feather Shield Master gave me is still there, it protected me just now…”
Lian Yi reached out and covered Liu Fenyun’s mouth, stifling the words. She murmured, “Don’t speak. Save your strength. I know you’re in pain.”
Liu Fenyun: “…”
Since the comfort failed, she had no choice but to follow the cat’s lead and feign a look of agony while taking the chance to observe their surroundings.
The two red dots hadn’t left, but the space she and Lian Yi were in was indeed temporarily cut off from the outside. At the very least, the enemy’s invisible arrows couldn’t penetrate Lian Yi’s barrier.
Liu Fenyun reached out to touch the barrier, then looked back at Lian Yi’s eyes. Those eyes, usually deep blue, were still that eerie green, exactly the same color as the Green Ghost Lotus.
She knew the cat would fall into an illusion if she smelled the lotus fragrance, but she hadn’t expected that a mere “near-death” scare would cause her to hallucinate and “blacken.”
“This is a special effect applied to blood contracted demons after the Green Ghost Lotus grows five petals,” the system explained. “The host can understand it as a [Protection Buff]. For the host, it’s an excellent safety measure. This side effect instantly triggers Lian Yi’s potential, allowing her to protect the host effectively…”
“And leave her to suffer alone in a hallucination?” Liu Fenyun interrupted the system, her voice turning cold. “I was her master before, and now I am her wife. Either way, it should be me protecting her.”
System: …Meow, I forgot this host is a total cat-slave!
Hearing no more from the system, Liu Fenyun tried to command the barrier to disperse. The barrier instantly vanished. Lian Yi, who was still crying while trying to “stop the bleeding,” paused. She stared at the perfectly intact clothes in front of her for two seconds, then touched them disbelievingly.
Feeling a warmth on her head, Lian Yi looked up in shock. She met Liu Fenyun’s gentle gaze and heard her soft voice: “It was just a hallucination. Don’t take it seriously.”
