Marry First, Love Later With The White Cat Princess - Chapter 4
After finishing the pulse diagnosis, Liu Fenyun touched the personal letter in her arms, planning to discuss the matter with Lianyi.
She definitely had to go to the Imperial Hospital. Physicians in this world were respected everywhere, their status second only to government officials. They enjoyed both high salaries and excellent benefits. Moreover, she wanted to continue studying medicine, especially the medical knowledge recorded in her system.
But if she went to the Imperial Hospital, she would certainly be out early and back late, possibly leaving her with no time to accompany Lianyi, and she might not even have time to personally decoct Lianyi’s medicine.
Despite her concerns, Liu Fenyun told Lianyi about the matter truthfully.
As soon as they returned to the manor, Lianyi released her demon form. While Liu Fenyun spoke, she propped her chin on her hands, her upturned cat tail swaying back and forth behind her.
“Husband, if you want to go, then go,” Lianyi said with a smile after hearing her out. “You’ll be out early and back late; it’s not like you’re going and never coming back. My medicine, coincidentally, is also taken once in the morning and once in the evening, so it won’t delay you decocting it.”
Liu Fenyun nodded awkwardly, still apologetic: “If Your Highness feels lonely, I will take a leave of absence and come back to accompany you.”
After she spoke, she felt a coolness on her brow. Lianyi stretched out a finger and gently tapped her between the eyebrows.
Meeting Liu Fenyun’s astonished gaze, Lianyi smiled and said, “Then you will accompany me well today, and go to your post tomorrow.”
Entertainment for ancient people was very limited, and Lianyi was frail and ill, unable to experience strong emotions. Before Liu Fenyun arrived, her way of passing time was mostly reading.
Thus, what Lianyi meant by “accompany me” was to pull Liu Fenyun to her study to read with her.
Her bookshelves were fully stocked. Liu Fenyun, remembering the High Priest’s instructions, browsed around and chose a history book about the human and demon races. She sat down next to Lianyi and began to read.
According to the historical records, humans and demons coexisted in this world. The continent with weak spiritual energy was designated as the Human Realm, and the continent with slightly denser spiritual energy was the Demon Realm.
To stop the war, the monarchs of the two races had made an agreement hundreds of years ago not to interfere with each other’s world.
However, there were still demons who accidentally entered the Human Realm, or humans who accidentally entered the Demon Realm.
According to this agreement, humans who went to the Demon Realm would either be eaten by wild demons or rely on their own skills to pledge allegiance to a certain Demon King and live in the Demon Realm.
As for demons who mistakenly entered the Human Realm, they would be treated as invaders, and regardless of whether they were a great demon or a lesser demon, they would all be eliminated without exception.
Just as Liu Fenyun was reading this part, a weight suddenly pressed down on her shoulder.
“Why are you reading this kind of book?” Lianyi’s voice sounded close to her ear, giving her a fright.
Liu Fenyun steadied herself and showed an awkward but polite smile: “I’ve never interacted with the demon race, so I wanted to see the experiences of my predecessors.”
Lianyi blinked, suddenly slipped the history book from her arms, and a moment later, handed her a new book.
“The history of the two races is too dull. Why don’t you read this?”
Liu Fenyun looked down: The Cat Wife.
It was a proper title, but when she opened the first page, her eyes immediately fell upon an illustration of an intimate scene, so explicit it could be censored, which made her snap the book shut with a pa sound in fright.
Yet, Lianyi asked with a smile at that moment: “Is it good? I like this one the best.”
“I… I haven’t read the content yet.” Liu Fenyun lightly coughed, her face flushed, and opened the book again.
It was as if a new world had opened up.
Lianyi leaned over to read with her.
The slightly curled brown hair brushed against Liu Fenyun’s neck, making her instinctively draw in her neck. Her face flushed even more, and she couldn’t concentrate on the book.
“Before I came, did Your Highness… entertain yourself like this?”
After reading for a while, Liu Fenyun couldn’t help but ask. As soon as she asked, she regretted it.
The residents of the Zhuohuang Kingdom hated the demon race, and Lianyi was only allowed to live in the city because the original body’s identity was special. She was just stirring up trouble needlessly.
Seeing her worried expression, Lianyi chuckled softly and deliberately said, “Yes, there aren’t any humans here willing to play with me; they only advise me to recuperate properly.”
She tapped the page with a bent finger and smiled: “You are the first human to read this book with me.”
“It is my honor,” Liu Fenyun said, lowering her gaze. “Then, does Your Highness still want to read it with me?”
Lianyi wanted to do more than just read with her, but she knew the time wasn’t right yet, and she also understood that a forced melon wasn’t sweet, so she just agreed. Her eyes swept over Liu Fenyun’s hand turning the page, she pursed her lips, and a warmth rose in her heart.
When the mess hall began preparing dinner, Lianyi took Liu Fenyun to the manor’s Herb Hall to fetch medicine.
The door to the Herb Hall was tightly shut. The plaque above the door was inscribed with “Herb Hall” in the ancient language of the Zhuohuang Kingdom. It looked like a talisman painting, radiating a reassuring dark golden color under the sunlight.
Before they even pushed the door open, Liu Fenyun smelled a bitter medicinal odor. She heard Lianyi groan softly, and when she turned to look, she saw Lianyi had already covered her nose and mouth, complaining with a tight frown: “This place… why does it smell so bitter even without decocting medicine?”
“Your Highness seems to greatly dislike the smell of herbal medicine,” Liu Fenyun commented casually. People who are frail or ill are often sensitive to smells, and it seems demons are no exception.
“Don’t mention herbal medicine!” Lianyi glared at her, pulling hard on her hand, making her stumble slightly. “Just hearing it makes my stomach uneasy.”
“Alright, alright, I won’t mention it, I won’t mention it,” Liu Fenyun laughed. “I’ve noted the location. Let’s send Your Highness back first. If it’s like this outside the door, the medicinal smell inside must be much stronger.”
“I don’t want to go back,” Lianyi shook her head, pinching her nose. “I haven’t watched someone dispense medicine before. I want to watch you dispense it.”
Liu Fenyun thought for a moment, took a mask from her personal medicine kit, and said, “Please wear this, Your Highness. The smell won’t be so strong.”
This was a modified mask she had someone make, specifically for blocking medicinal odors.
Lianyi took the mask, examined it curiously, and gestured for Liu Fenyun to help her put it on.
Liu Fenyun pinched the soft cloth straps at both ends of the mask, carefully moved her hair aside, and made the straps fit snugly behind her two small ears.
Her fingertips lightly touched Lianyi’s earlobe, tracing past her earlobe.
After adjusting the position of the mask, Liu Fenyun saw Lianyi standing still obediently, and couldn’t help but reach out and gently stroke her head.
Only after doing so did she realize, quickly pulling her hand back to apologize, but Lianyi caught her wrist and placed her hand back on the soft hair.
“Go on,” she smiled, her eyes curved, seemingly enjoying it very much.
Liu Fenyun was stunned, tentatively stroked her twice, then suddenly heard a man’s laughter approaching from beyond the door. She put her hand down and, holding Lianyi’s hand, pushed the door open.
When the two walked into the Herb Hall, the physicians were busy. Hearing footsteps, they turned around, hurriedly stopped what they were doing, and rushed over to kneel and pay homage.
“Greetings to the Imperial Son-in-Law! Greetings to Your Highness!”
“Why have you two esteemed figures come in person?”
As Lianyi nodded in acknowledgment, Liu Fenyun’s eyes swept over the kneeling physicians and apprentices. There were quite a few of them, but they were all men, which made her feel a little disappointed.
“Just continue your work; you don’t need to mind us,” Lianyi told the physicians to rise, then said to Liu Fenyun, “Husband, go dispense the medicine.”
So Liu Fenyun took the medicinal scale and the sorting tray, preparing to dispense the medicine.
The physicians did not know that the Imperial Son-in-Law had once been a physician. They exchanged confused glances, and a bolder one walked straight over to stop her: “Imperial Son-in-Law, what medicine do you need? Just hand the prescription over to us.”
Faced with their suspicious looks, Liu Fenyun just smiled and shook her head: “No need to trouble you all.”
She then used her actions to tell these physicians—she was a master of medicine far superior to them.
After witnessing her skilled technique in weighing the medicine, the physicians collectively fell silent, going back to their respective work obediently.
Lianyi, however, said, “Little girl in gray, you stay.”
The retreating people paused, and the footsteps of the little apprentice in gray, who had been called out, also stopped.
Liu Fenyun immediately instructed the system to scan the apprentice and found that the person was indeed a little girl, though she was currently dressed in male clothing and was so thin her female figure was almost indiscernible.
Knowing her gender couldn’t be hidden from the demon race, the little apprentice in gray turned and slowly walked over, kneeling respectfully to the two.
“‘Mo Huai offers greetings to Your Highness and the Imperial Son-in-Law’,” a hoarse, young boy’s voice sounded.
Thinking that all the physicians and apprentices here were men, Liu Fenyun sighed inwardly that it was not easy. Just as she was about to tell Mo Huai to rise, Lianyi gave another command: “Guards, cut her open.”
Liu Fenyun: …???
“Your Highness, what are you doing?!” she looked at Lianyi in shock.
“I have always disliked the smell of medicine. The Herb Hall is the easiest place for a spy to hide,” Lianyi said coldly. “What are you waiting for? Take her down!”
Before the physicians could act, Mo Huai suddenly tried to run away.
Before she could run out of the Hall, she was hit with a heavy thwack on the back. She let out a pained cry and sprawled on the ground, hitting her head hard enough to see stars.
“Your Highness!” Liu Fenyun dropped the scale and rushed to the doorway, watching with shock and fear as the gigantic white cat pressed Mo Huai down with its paw.
Mo Huai stared at the large white cat in terror, felt the sharp claws touch her flesh, and cried out: “Your Highness, spare me! High Priest sent me! Your Highness, spare…”
Lianyi’s paw flipped her over. She unsheathed her claws and swiped down again. With a poof sound, the sharp claws had sliced Mo Huai open from belly to chest, and fresh blood immediately flowed all over the floor.
The smell of blood spread through the Herb Hall. Everyone watched and gasped in shock.
Mo Huai struggled fruitlessly a few times before passing out from the pain.
“The identity token of a Priest Hall assassin is hidden in the abdomen,” Lianyi transformed back into human form and explained to Liu Fenyun. “I merely mentioned it in passing, yet I didn’t expect her to be so scared that she confessed herself.”
The guards who rushed over quickly squatted down next to Mo Huai. They soon found a small iron piece among the blood and viscera, washed it clean, and showed it to Lianyi and Liu Fenyun.
Liu Fenyun did not look away, but her body was still somewhat uncomfortable. If she hadn’t dissected many corpses with her master, she would probably have vomited on the spot at the sight of this horrific scene.
Lianyi glanced at the small iron piece and said coldly: “A person who betrays their master so easily deserves to be killed.”
Her voice was slightly muffled through the mask, but it still sent shivers down everyone’s spines.
The guards understood her meaning and immediately dragged Mo Huai away.
The scent of blood in the Herb Hall was still pungent. Liu Fenyun stared at the bloodstains on the ground, feeling her heart pound.
She had long heard that the demon race was cruel and bloodthirsty, but witnessing it in person and hearing about it were two different things.
This side of Lianyi, who could kill without blinking, made her instinctively feel a sense of danger.
“Is Husband afraid?”
Lianyi’s smiling voice sounded close to her ear, startling Liu Fenyun. “I just don’t like people who betray others, whether they are my subordinates or the enemy’s subordinates.”
“So, I didn’t want to let her go.”
Liu Fenyun steadied herself. In the dead silence, she suddenly reached out and held Lianyi’s wrist, taking out a clean handkerchief to wipe the blood from her hand.
Since she had become a demon’s wife, and the demon had kept her biggest secret, she had to get used to the demon’s temperament.
What’s more, Mo Huai, as an assassin, had revealed her master and truly should not be spared. Lianyi’s decision was not wrong.
She had not expected Liu Fenyun to suddenly wipe her hand. Lianyi was momentarily stunned. A pair of cat ears in her hair flickered in confusion. She inexplicably felt her face growing warm and awkwardly pulled her hand back.
She had prepared herself for Liu Fenyun’s disgust, but at this moment, she was somewhat at a loss.
“I should continue dispensing the medicine. Does Your Highness still want to watch?”
Liu Fenyun’s voice reached her ears, gentle and calm, without a hint of fear.
Lianyi even forgot if she had nodded. When she came back to her senses, she was already back with Liu Fenyun next to the medicine cabinet, surrounded by the bitter scent.
