Marry First, Love Later With The White Cat Princess - Chapter 38.1
Lianyi adjusted both her appearance and figure to look masculine, riding a white horse behind Liu Fenyun. Her gray white riding outfit fluttered in the mountain wind. These words had not reached Liu Fenyun’s ears but were overheard by her.
The mocking officials suddenly felt a cold, piercing gaze on them. When they looked up, they saw a handsome young man with deep blue, icy eyes. Instinctively, they fell silent.
Lianyi wore the Holy Maiden seal on her belt. Once palace personnel saw it, they immediately recognized her. Out of respect and fear of her demon identity, they said no more.
The Spring Hunt competition had two rounds. The first round took place near the stands and consisted of mounted archery, serving as a warm-up. The second round occurred in the mountain hunting ground and ended at dusk, with scores based on the number and types of prey captured to determine the first day’s winner.
This was only the first day’s content. The next two days focused solely on hunting. After three days, total scores determined the champion, who would receive not only traditional rewards but also a jade bow offered to Gehua Kingdom. Other rankings would receive rewards according to tradition.
Archery posed no challenge for Liu Fenyun. The system had already set her archery skill proficiency to 80%, so this warm up was nothing more than a formality. She had no need to hit every target perfectly to show off.
Shooting order was determined by rank. When it was Liu Fenyun’s turn, she rode Wangyunzhu, drew her bow, and aimed at the targets.
As the horse galloped swiftly, she drew and shot arrow after arrow. With the system’s assistance, she fired ten arrows without pause seven hit the bullseye, and the remaining three were not far off, much better than her practice sessions.
The stands erupted in cheers.
Liu Fenyun collected her bow and arrows, returning to Lianyi and Sha Rulang calmly, unlike the others, who circled the arena with bows raised.
She knew her skill came from the system, nothing to boast about.
Among all the men, Liu Fenyun recognized only two: the tenth prince Sha Yunhuan and the crown prince Sha Fuli.
The tenth prince, as expected, did not disappoint. Only four of his ten arrows hit the bullseye. But he had anticipated this, so after shooting, he smiled faintly at everyone and quietly stepped down, waiting for the hunting round.
The crown prince’s ten arrows, however, all hit the bullseye. The last shot was perfect, and the stands erupted with thunderous applause.
Yet Sha Fuli signaled everyone to be quiet, his fox like eyes smiling, and said calmly, “This year, I shall not participate in the competition.”
After he spoke, all the men participating in the Spring Hunt breathed a sigh of relief if the crown prince competed, there would be no need to compete for first place.
Liu Fenyun, however, did not believe he would simply watch quietly. She remembered that the crown prince was close with the High Priest, so his sudden withdrawal likely meant he had more important matters to attend to.
After the warm-up, the emperor ordered the Ritual Department to guide the participants into the hunting ground.
Liu Fenyun led the two high-status “assistants” into the hunting ground, still feeling the crown prince’s fox like eyes watching her.
The gaze made her shiver, and she could not guess what the prince intended, so she urged her horse forward.
Sha Rulang followed tightly behind Liu Fenyun and Lianyi. Though she had hunted with her brother before, this was her first Spring Hunt competition, and she was naturally a bit nervous.
“Do you want me to take you to the prey’s nest?” Lianyi asked Liu Fenyun.
Liu Fenyun shook her head. With the system map in hand, she could locate any prey within the hunting ground.
For safety, she did not go deep into the mountains, unsure if the Fourth Princess might send demons to cause trouble.
They were accompanied by Princess Sha Rulang, and it was uncertain if the Fourth Princess had noticed.
Many royals and officials participated in the Spring Hunt. By the time the first round finished, it was almost noon. Shortly after entering the forest, they hunted some pheasants and rabbits, roasting them to fill their stomachs.
The “wild animals” in the hunting ground were all raised by Beast Tamers. Their meat was fresh and not too fatty.
Sha Rulang was at an age of rapid growth and ate heartily, leaving a pile of bones beside her.
While Lianyi and she enjoyed lunch, Liu Fenyun did not forget to prepare medicine for Lianyi. Over the past few days, she had stored the herbs in heat resistant bottles. When Lianyi needed to take them, they were poured into a regular bowl and heated in a water bath.
The bitter aroma of the medicine wafted, causing Lianyi to feel a little nauseous as she tore into rabbit meat.
Her condition had improved a lot, her stomach had recovered over half a winter, and Liu Fenyun prepared to give her the decoction three times a day.
Even though Liu Fenyun could make the medicine palatable, Lianyi’s natural aversion remained.
Sha Rulang, however, did not react. She had been weak as a child and was accustomed to taking medicine after injuries from training.
Seeing Lianyi frown, Liu Fenyun quickly leaned over and whispered, “I brought sugar for you!”
The sugar was specially made, sweet without affecting the medicine.
The proud “kitty” immediately perked up: “I’m not afraid of bitterness now. I can finish the medicine without sugar.”
Liu Fenyun stifled a laugh and replied, “Alright, alright,” rubbing Lianyi’s exposed cat ears as she returned to stir the medicine.
Sha Rulang ignored their display of affection, finishing her rabbit meat before leaving, saying, “I want to walk off my meal nearby.”
Liu Fenyun nodded, watching her leave, then opened the system map to scan the area. “Qi Ran and Master are both in the hunting ground.”
“Why is Qi Ran in the hunting ground?” Lianyi asked.
Liu Fenyun didn’t know either. Qi Ran’s position was special he worked for the Fourth Princess but also protected the fifteenth princess. His intentions were unclear.
She recalled that previously, Luo Binglun had sent someone to set up anti-demon formations in the mountains, which Qi Ran burned down. Luo Binglun must have realized that the demon would enter the hunting ground.
Liu Fenyun picked up a branch, wet it, and drew on the ground: “This is the hunting ground, and this is our position.”
Lianyi watched while chewing on rabbit meat.
“Master is not with the High Priest but in this area,” Liu Fenyun pointed on the map. “Far from us, but close to Qi Ran.”
Lianyi nodded. Liu Fenyun pointed to another location: “Qi Ran is here. This area has steep cliffs and deep valleys, often inhabited by monkeys and other wild animals. It’s at the edge of the hunting ground, also suitable for ambush.”
“You mean Qi Ran is waiting in this area to push someone off the cliff?” Lianyi frowned. “Why wait until this year when she had opportunities in the past?”
“I don’t know. Maybe this spring moon period is significant, or she wasn’t ready before,” Liu Fenyun said, erasing the marks. “If the target is the Fourth Princess, Master might help her after all, the Fourth Princess tried to harm the High Priest first.”
“We won’t interfere this time, just enjoy hunting,” Lianyi said. “Master can defeat Qi Ran anytime. She is also Qi Ran’s senior. If we interfere, it will only cause trouble.”
Liu Fenyun nodded, tossing the branch aside. “I can track them for now. Let’s just hunt in peace.”
Since Lianyi’s favorability reached 90 points, the blue ghost lotus in the herb garden bloomed two petals. Liu Fenyun realized her senses were now sharper. Lianyi’s demon aura didn’t cover the entire hunting ground, but with the system’s help, she could detect it.
Only now did Liu Fenyun realize this was essentially a romance system. No wonder after marrying Lianyi, making a blood pact, and building affection, so many magical features unlocked.
Author’s Note: The pre-release has a slightly changed title, and the synopsis has been completed. Next project:
