- Chapter 1 - The Physician (1)
The Great Qi Dynasty, Shajia Village.
“Gu Jiuli, the Mighty General of Great Qi, has led his troops to a crushing victory over the Yelu. The Yelu have written a letter of surrender and will send envoys to the capital, Yancheng, to negotiate peace. I heard the Mighty General has already begun his triumphal return to the court.” A young peddler from the county seat was talking incessantly to the villagers about what he had seen and heard.
A young man carrying a medicine box, his eyes wrapped in black cloth, walked past the peddler while tapping the ground with a bamboo pole.
The peddler suddenly lost his voice, his eyes fixed on the young man as he moved. It was for no other reason than the fact that the young man was far too good-looking, even more beautiful than the courtesans he had seen in the Red Pavilion, the largest brothel in the county.
The young man wore coarse linen clothes, yet he did not appear destitute. He had a tall, upright posture, and his glossy, waist-length black hair was tied behind his head with a scrap of fabric. He looked both elegant and youthful. With fair skin, a high bridge to his nose, and pale, thin lips, he resembled a delicate ink wash painting. The colors were light, but the artistic conception was profound.
What a pity, the peddler thought, looking at the black cloth wrapped around the young man’s eyes. He was blind.
“Who is that? I have never seen him in the village before,” the peddler asked someone nearby.
“That is the eldest son of the Song family, Song Qingshi. He does not go out often. He must be returning from practicing medicine somewhere today.”
“He probably went to Old Man Liu’s house. I heard he has been down with a cold lately.”
“Practicing medicine? He is a doctor! But isn’t he blind?”
“He was not born blind, you know. It is a family craft.”
The subject of their discussion, Song Qingshi, had already walked far away and did not hear their gossip.
[Ding! Host Song Qingshi, your mission target has been picked up and brought home by your younger brother.]
886: “The main storyline is about to begin. Are you ready, Song Qingshi?”
The mechanical electronic voice in his head caused Song Qingshi to stop in his tracks. He let out a breath, feeling a bit nervous. After all, this was his first mission as a Plot Maintenance Officer.
Song Qingshi was not actually the physician Song Qingshi of Shajia Village. He had lived on 23rd-century Earth and died in a flying car accident. When he arrived in the Underworld, he was told that the reincarnation queue was backed up for 800 years. Consequently, they packed him off to the Galaxy Company to become a Plot Maintenance Officer for the Three Thousand Worlds. The voice speaking in his head belonged to 886, the system assigned exclusively to him.
The male lead of this world was named Gu Jiuli, a general of the Great Qi Dynasty. The role Song Qingshi had to play required him to save the male lead after he was injured in an assassination attempt, then treat the amnesiac hero like a servant, and finally be beaten to death with clubs by the hero once his memory was restored. He was essentially a minor villain with limited screen time.
With a sigh, Song Qingshi continued walking toward home.
The greatest inconvenience of becoming Song Qingshi was being blind. It had taken him a long time after arriving to adapt enough to move around as freely as he did now.
886: “I am sorry, Song Qingshi. 886 is too useless to grab a better mission for you. Next time I will work harder to get you one where you are not blind!”
Song Qingshi thought to himself: “Do not cry, 886. This character has little plot and exits early. It is perfect!”
886: “Really?”
Song Qingshi: “Yes!”
Engaged in conversation with System 886, Song Qingshi pushed open the wooden door and entered his home.
“Brother, you are back!” It was Song Qingshi’s younger brother, Song Qingyu. He had just turned ten and was arguably a young man now.
Song Qingshi and his brother were orphans who relied on each other for survival.
Song Qingshi closed the door and turned toward the direction of the voice. “Song Qingyu, how is your preview of your schoolwork coming along?” Song Qingyu was currently studying at the village’s private school.
“I finished it long ago.” Song Qingyu rubbed his nose and stepped forward to take Song Qingshi’s hand. “Brother, come with me quickly.”
“What is it?” Song Qingshi asked as he was pulled into the house. In his heart, he already knew who he was being taken to see.
Upon entering the room, his nose caught the pungent scent of blood and medicinal herbs. Song Qingyu led him to the bedside. “Brother, I picked someone up by the river. He was covered in blood. I did not dare move him much. I only sprinkled some hemostatic powder on him. Quick, help me check on him.”
Hearing this, Song Qingshi could only think that his brother’s safety awareness was far too low for bringing a blood-covered man straight home.
“Alright, I will take a look.” Despite his internal complaints, Song Qingshi walked to the bedside and fumbled to find the person’s hand.
Fortunately, the pulse was still strong.
Song Qingshi released the wrist and began feeling over the body of the person on the bed.
The fabric of the clothes was soft and smooth, indicating high-quality material. There was a sticky liquid on it, which was blood. There were scars and wounds of various sizes, mostly blade wounds. The most serious one was at the abdomen, nearly crossing it entirely. Song Qingshi also felt a swollen lump on the back of the man’s head, which was likely the reason for the male lead’s amnesia upon waking.
The “sprinkling of medicine” Song Qingyu mentioned was truly just sprinkling. The wounds had not been treated at all.
“Sigh,” Song Qingshi sighed softly. “Song Qingyu, fetch some warm water to wipe him down and clean the wounds. I will go brew the medicine.”
“You got it, Brother!” Having received his orders, Song Qingyu ran out.
Song Qingshi removed the man’s tattered clothes one by one. Luckily, the wounds were fresh and had not adhered to the fabric.
Holding the male lead’s clothes, Song Qingshi faced a dilemma.
Song Qingshi asked: “886, in the plot, how does Song Qingshi handle the male lead’s clothes?”
886: “I do not know. What you know is all the data the company sent out.”
Song Qingshi: “The company only provides the character’s life history and a brief outline of the plot? There is not a full version of the script?”
886: “No. I heard from seniors that they used to give maintenance officers the complete development of the world’s plot, but people kept using their foresight to sabotage the story. Now, the company only gives the mission process the officer needs to follow.”
Song Qingshi: “I see. Fine then.”
Song Qingshi rolled up the male lead’s clothes into a bundle. “In that case, I will just burn them.” Otherwise, when the male lead woke up and saw these clothes, he would suspect his own identity. He had to stay behind to serve as a domestic servant.
The Song family house had only four rooms. There was one for Song Qingshi, one for Song Qingyu, a kitchen, and a main hall which served as their dining area.
Aside from a bed, a large portion of Song Qingshi’s room was filled with various herbs and vessels. Besides being a place for him to rest, it was also where he treated patients.
The male lead had been placed by Song Qingyu on the small daybed in Song Qingshi’s room. This was where Song Qingshi settled patients who came for treatment, separated from his own wooden bed by only a single screen.
The long-limbed male lead looked quite comical settled on the narrow daybed. He covered the entire surface, and a good portion of his calves hung off the edge.
Song Qingshi weighed out several herbs from his categorized cabinets, went to the kitchen, and began simmering them in a small medicinal pot. He also took the opportunity to boil water and steam dinner. He used the chance to toss the male lead’s clothes into the stove.
“Brother, I have finished everything!”
Song Qingyu’s voice came from the room. Song Qingshi poured the simmered medicine into a bowl and carried it inside. “Coming.”
Song Qingshi handed the bowl to Song Qingyu. “Song Qingyu, feed this medicine to him.”
“Okay, Brother!” Song Qingyu took the bowl. Song Qingshi heard the sound of the spoon clinking. “It is not working, Brother. Give me a hand. I cannot feed him like this while he is lying flat.”
“Alright.” Song Qingshi sat by the daybed and lifted the male lead’s upper body, using himself as a support. He cupped the man’s jaw with one hand. “Go ahead, Song Qingyu.”
The warm medicinal broth slid down the corner of the man’s mouth and onto Song Qingshi’s palm. It was not until a small puddle gathered in his hand that the bowl of medicine was finally finished.
Who knows how much he actually swallowed.
Song Qingshi wiped the man’s chin and his own hand with a handkerchief. Instead of laying the man back down, he said to Song Qingyu: “Song Qingyu, move that screen aside. Let us move him to my bed together.”
“Giving him the bed? Then where will you sleep, Brother?” Song Qingyu was puzzled.
“This daybed is too small for him. It will not help his wounds heal. Until he wakes up, I will just make do here,” Song Qingshi explained.
“Fine, he is getting a bargain.”
The male lead was truly the male lead. In just two or three days, his severe injuries had mostly healed, though he remained unconscious.
One day, while feeding the medicine, before they had even finished a few spoonfuls, Song Qingyu said: “Brother, he is awake!”
The hand Song Qingshi used to support the man’s chin stiffened instantly. He then let go as if nothing had happened, pulling out a handkerchief. He intended to wipe his own hand but instinctively wiped the man’s chin first. Feeling a bit awkward, Song Qingshi said dryly: “You are awake?”
“Cough, cough, cough.” A tremor came from the chest in front of him, followed by a raspy voice. “Who are you? Who am I? Where is this?”
Excellent. The plot has arrived!
“Ahem,” Song Qingshi stood up from the bedside and cleared his throat. “Do you not remember? My name is Song Qingshi, and this is my younger brother, Song Qingyu. Your name is Dahei. You are a servant I bought from the town. You fell from a cliff and were injured a few days ago.”
“My name is Dahei? I am sorry, I cannot remember anything.” Gu Jiuli clutched his head. It was a complete blank, yet he felt he should not be a servant. He scanned the space filled with the scent of medicine and looked at the two brothers, focusing particularly on the young man with the black cloth over his eyes. An inappropriate thought crossed his mind: “Black suits him well. He is so fair.”
“It does not matter. It is likely that you injured your head, and the blood stasis in your brain is causing your memories to be muddled,” Song Qingshi provided a professional explanation. “Once the stasis clears, you will naturally remember everything slowly.”
“Is that so?” Gu Jiuli felt the back of his head. There was indeed a hard lump. Thus, he chose to temporarily believe the young man’s words. “Then thank you, Young Master Song Qingshi, for saving me. Dahei is deeply grateful.”
The male lead was quite quick on the uptake.
“You are welcome. You are a servant of my house. It is only right to save you.” Song Qingshi patted Song Qingyu’s shoulder. “Song Qingyu, give him the medicine and let him drink it himself. Go focus on your lessons. I will handle things here.”
“Okay, Brother.” Song Qingyu did not understand what his brother was trying to do, but he was not foolish enough to ask in front of someone else. He handed the bowl to Gu Jiuli and returned to his own room.
“Gulp, gulp.” After two swallowing sounds, Song Qingshi heard Gu Jiuli’s voice again. “Young Master Song Qingshi, I have finished the medicine. This bowl…”
“Give it to me.” Song Qingshi reached out his hand. The porcelain bowl was placed in his palm. Just as he was about to take the bowl out, Gu Jiuli spoke again: “Young Master Song Qingshi, may I ask about my clothes?”
Song Qingshi’s foot paused. He remembered the clothes he had used as kindling. He began to bluff. “Your clothes were ruined when you fell off the cliff, so I threw them away. I will find something else for you.”
Song Qingshi placed the bowl on a nearby medicine cabinet and began rummaging through a wooden chest in the corner of the room.
He had gained a basic understanding of Gu Jiuli’s physique over the last few days. The man was nearly 190 cm tall with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. His muscles were not bulky but were full of explosive power. He definitely could not fit into Song Qingshi’s or Song Qingyu’s clothes.
Ah, here! Song Qingshi pulled a short silk-faced jacket from the bottom of the chest. This was a garment their father used to wear only when visiting wealthy families in town to practice medicine. Because the material was quite good, it had not been burned with him after he passed away.
“I do not have anything here that fits your size. This was left by my father. Wear this for now.” Song Qingshi handed the garment to Gu Jiuli.
“Alright, thank you, Young Master Song Qingshi.” Gu Jiuli took the clothing, feeling somewhat surprised. The fabric was clearly much better than the coarse linen the young man was wearing, yet he gave it to him without hesitation.
It seemed this Young Master of his had quite a good personality.
“Mhm.” Song Qingshi picked up the bowl and headed to the kitchen.
