- Chapter 4 - Q&A Session
The next segment was a Q&A session, with questions drawn from thirty cohabitation scenarios gathered through data analysis.
The host distributed tablets to the guests, who could type their answers directly onto the devices. A machine would then calculate the scores, selecting the pair with the highest total!
“The questions will focus on your expectations of a cohabitation partner,” the host explained. “Just answer honestly based on your gut feelings!”
She continued outlining the rules:
- No lying is permitted. Any detected falsehood will result in immediate disqualification.
- Final scores will be based on the similarity of the pair’s answers. The closer the answers, the higher the score.
- The machine’s final score is absolute and cannot be disputed.
- The machine will conceal a special rule, to be revealed only after the segment concludes.
Jiang Yun’s eyes lit up. The prompt was ‘expectations of a cohabitation partner,’ with higher scores for similar answers.’ If she and Xu Qiansheng gave completely different answers, they were guaranteed a low score!
Having thoroughly researched Xu Qiansheng, this task seemed effortless to Jiang Yun.
As for the rule against lying, who would know if she lied, as long as she kept it to herself?
The questions flashed on the big screen, and the guests simply had to type their answers on their tablets.
During this segment, the guests were forbidden from communicating with each other, and even their tablets had anti-spy screens.
To keep things interesting for the viewers, the director would reveal the guests’ answers in the live broadcast.
[The first question: What kind of pet do you want to have with your roommate?]
Jiang Yun remembered that Xu Qiansheng had a small parrot, so she was sure Xu Qiansheng would write that.
So Jiang Yun did the opposite and typed “dolphin” on her tablet.
Sure enough, the final answers were:
Jiang Yun: Dolphin
Xu Qiansheng: Parrot
The newly formed Yun-Sheng CP fans immediately sensed trouble when they saw these completely different answers.
Jiang Yun, I have to ask, how big is your backyard if you want to keep a dolphin?
One wants the ocean, the other the sky. Are these two really a 99% match?
An unconventional perfect match!
****
But even more shocking revelations were yet to come.
What kind of environment do you want to create with your roommate?
Xu Qiansheng: Quiet
Jiang Yun: Noisy
[What do you want to do with your roommate?]
Xu Qiansheng: Read books
Jiang Yun: Play video games
[Where do you want to eat with your roommate?]
Xu Qiansheng: A small restaurant
Jiang Yun: A fancy five-star hotel
[What do you want from your roommate?]
Xu Qiansheng: To be alive
Jiang Yun: Perfect, reliable, mature, responsible, never giving up…
After answering all thirty questions, the couple with the most similar answers were Yu Qingying and Lin Ming.
Next were Yu Yun and Zhang Shulan.
Even Zhang Heng and Song Anting had several questions where their answers were quite similar.
But Jiang Yun and Xu Qiansheng’s answers were completely different across all thirty questions, as if they were deliberately trying to sabotage the game.
Is it too late to quit the Yun-Sheng CP now?
Did the heavens send these two to live together just to torture each other?
New CP fans are still crying, but the old ones are already used to it! Have you all forgotten how these two were interacting last week? It’s a miracle they haven’t started fighting yet!
****
One comment reminded everyone that Jiang Yun and Xu Qiansheng had been bitter rivals in the previous week’s episode.
Thinking about it that way, their completely different answers didn’t seem so strange after all.
Little did anyone know that Jiang Yun had deliberately planned everything. She had perfectly predicted Xu Qiansheng’s answers and chosen completely opposite responses.
She had expected to get a few questions wrong, but to her surprise, every single answer was perfectly opposite Xu Qiansheng’s.
Now, she was certain their team would get the lowest score!
You must regret this now, Xu Qiansheng!
Jiang Yun eagerly anticipated seeing Xu Qiansheng’s frustrated expression as she was forced to live in a cramped cabin and endure the torment of her unlucky roommate.
Jiang Yun, who had been closely observing Xu Qiansheng’s reactions, noticed that even after all the incorrect answers were revealed, Xu Qiansheng showed no signs of disappointment.
Then came the scoring phase, and Xu Qiansheng once again wore that same surprised expression as before.
What could possibly surprise her now?
This time, Jiang Yun wasn’t worried. As long as they answered the questions, there was no way they’d get another absurd score like last time’s 99%.
Jiang Yun glanced at the large screen, and, as expected, there was no 99. Instead, there was a baffling score of 100.
The final matching machine results were announced:
Yu Qingying & Lin Min: 81
Yu Yun & Zhang Shulan: 63
Xu Qiansheng & Jiang Yun: 100
Zhang Heng & Song Anting: 30
Jiang Yun: ???
Chat: ?????
“Why…” Jiang Yun wanted to stand up and protest loudly.
“Why did their group, who answered everything wrong, get a perfect score of 100?”
Before Jiang Yun could speak, Song Anting had already lost his composure, instinctively pounding the sofa in frustration.
“Please do not question the results generated by the matching machine. The rules clearly state how scoring works!” the host sternly warned, leaving Song Anting to grind his teeth in silence.
The screen then revealed a special rule: answering all questions with the opposite of what you believe would grant a perfect score.
Jiang Yun nearly choked on her own blood. She had thought it would be a simple Q&A, but this final trap awaited her.
Hahahaha! A special rule like that!
Even this was part of the machine’s calculations? That 99% match rate wasn’t just for show!
Raise the Yun-Sheng CP flag high!
****
Why was this happening?
A baffling 99% match rate, now a baffling perfect score of 100.
The repeated blows left Jiang Yun in a dazed state, slumped on the sofa.
Xu Qiansheng subtly noticed that Jiang Yun seemed to become emotionally withdrawn whenever something like this happened.
It had been the same when she learned they were matched, and now it was the same again after she achieved the highest score.
She doesn’t want to be matched with me, and she doesn’t want to stay in the best accommodation. Does Jiang Yun have a masochistic streak?
With the highest score, Jiang Yun and Xu Qiansheng would stay in a seaside villa.
As the host prepared to announce the result, Jiang Yun mustered her last shred of defiance. “Wait… wait a minute!”
“Miss Jiang Yun seems to have something to say. Is this your victory speech?” the host asked.
“I don’t like the sea breeze, so I can’t stay in the seaside villa!”
As if making a final stand, Jiang Yun let out a defiant cry.
The guests disliked the sea breeze, but the prize was a seaside villa. What were they supposed to do?
Now it was the host’s turn to panic.
And that was exactly the effect Jiang Yun wanted!
If the guests refused, the production team would have to make adjustments!
Even if she couldn’t get to the simple cottage, any reduction in her living standards would be a victory for Jiang Yun.
A mischievous smile crept across her lips again, but the little devil didn’t notice that a powerful woman beside her was scrutinizing her masterful “face-changing” act.
“You don’t like the sea breeze?” Xu Qiansheng suddenly spoke up.
“?” Jiang Yun felt a sudden sense of dread.
“So you prefer dolphins?”
The flustered host was immensely grateful for Xu Qiansheng’s intervention. Upon reflection, it did seem rather odd.
While the two preferences weren’t mutually exclusive, disliking the sea breeze while liking dolphins struck everyone as strange.
Once you tell one lie, you have to weave more to cover it up.
“I started liking them from TV! Is that so wrong?” Jiang Yun retorted through gritted teeth.
It was a seemingly airtight argument. Theoretically, Jiang Yun should have been immune to any rebuttal.
Yet the moment she met Xu Qiansheng’s gaze, a chilling premonition washed over her.
“If you truly disliked the sea breeze, you wouldn’t have specifically sought out a seaside drama production three years ago, would you?”
Jiang Yun was stunned, her cheeks flushing crimson.
Xu Qiansheng still remembered that incident from three years ago?
Back then, Jiang Yun had been working as an extra on a film crew, playing the part of a fishmonger’s daughter by the sea.
This was a direct slap in the face. It wasn’t like that was the only film crew hiring extras at the time. If she truly hated the sea breeze, why would she specifically choose a seaside production?
The little devil deflated yet again.
Just when she thought things would settle down now that Jiang Yun was out of the picture, Zhang Heng suddenly spoke up in protest.
“I still have a problem with this!” he said with a cold smile.
Seeing the male lead object, Jiang Yun initially thought he was going to defend her. But then Zhang Heng dropped this bombshell:
“There’s a rule that anyone caught lying in this segment will be kicked off the show. Jiang Yun lied!”
The room erupted in shock.
Jiang Yun froze, completely forgetting about that rule.
Even the director paused, startled. The rule did exist, but it was just for show, to build tension for the audience. Who would actually kick off a guest over something like this?
“Um, Mr. Zhang Heng…” the host stammered, trying to smooth things over.
“Rules are rules,” Zhang Heng insisted, his tone resolute. “The show can’t just bend them for someone’s sake!”
Zhang Heng’s plan was crystal clear: once Jiang Yun left the show, he would naturally become Xu Qiansheng’s most compatible roommate, filling the void left by her departure.
Jiang Yun could guess Zhang Heng’s intentions. She urgently asked the System, “If I quit the show and the male and female leads end up living together, will I have completed my mission?”
No way! the System replied. There has to be a vicious female supporting character!
Damn it! Jiang Yun thought. That ungrateful male lead! He’s biting the hand that feeds him!
Jiang Yun was so furious she couldn’t even form a coherent response. She had no idea how to counter Zhang Heng’s argument.
Just as Jiang Yun was at her wit’s end, Xu Qiansheng, standing beside her, smiled warmly.
“Zhang Heng, how dare you accuse my roommate of lying?” Xu Qiansheng challenged him, her smile sharp.
Now it was Zhang Heng’s turn to panic. “But Qiansheng, you were the one who said…”
“Jiang Yun just doesn’t like sea breezes,” Xu Qiansheng countered. “She’s not allergic to them.”
“But there were other film crews filming at the time…”
“Our crew was paying the most,” Xu Qiansheng stated firmly. “Right, future roommate?”
Jiang Yun nodded eagerly. “Exactly! I only went there because they paid so much!”
Hearing this, Zhang Heng had no choice but to swallow his anger and fall silent.
Finally past the crisis, Jiang Yun noticed the term “future roommate.” She couldn’t possibly become Xu Qiansheng’s actual roommate!
“So, I really hate the sea breeze. Could we maybe… find a slightly worse place? That way, it’d be easier for you to hate me!”
“You need to adapt to things, right?” Xu Qiansheng’s eyes darkened slightly, as if to warn Jiang Yun, If you keep arguing, I won’t protect you anymore.
Jiang Yun deflated again, collapsing limply onto the sofa.
Xu Qiansheng didn’t necessarily need the seaside villa; she could adapt to other places just fine.
But Jiang Yun’s constant attempts to wriggle out of things, combined with her quirky charm, made Xu Qiansheng want to tease her.
Even before they’d started living together, Xu Qiansheng had already formed a strong impression of her “future roommate.”
Originally, she’d only agreed to participate in the variety show because her agency required it.
Now, it seemed like things might be getting a little more interesting.
With no further disruptions, the show proceeded smoothly. Xu Qiansheng and Jiang Yun moved into the seaside villa.
