- Chapter 20 - Beautiful Women, Stop Taking Selfies!
Xu Mi had never experienced this kind of situation before and was immediately a bit bewildered. She looked up at Qu Ange and asked, “What’s going on?”
Qu Ange replied, “The topic must have blown up.”
“What?”
“It means a lot of people saw your Weibo post and are reposting and commenting on it.”
Xu Mi roughly understood but still wore a puzzled expression because, honestly, she didn’t think she had written anything particularly remarkable—though she had indeed put a lot of thought into it.
But when she opened Weibo, she found it was true. The likes and comments had already surpassed a thousand, with some people debating and others just spectating. This stirred an inexplicable panic in her heart because, until this moment, she had never imagined that something she posted would be seen by so many people.
Yet, alongside the panic, there was also a faint sense of pleasure?
Xu Mi’s emotions were tangled when Qu Ange suddenly became furious. After Qu Ange reposted Xu Mi’s Weibo, many people had discovered her account and, naturally, the selfie she had posted. Some recognized her as the girl who had been singing on the street and had trended on the hot search, but most of the comments were along the lines of—”She doesn’t seem that pretty after all.”
On the subway, Qu Ange kept zooming in on the photos, unable to find anything wrong with them. Unable to hold back, she showed the photos to Xu Mi and asked, “Are these photos not good-looking?”
Xu Mi glanced at them and hesitated.
Qu Ange said, “…No way, are they really not good-looking?”
Xu Mi replied, “They’re not as good as the ones others took of you.”
Qu Ange blankly stared at her reflection in the subway window. Although fans in the future would indeed say her selfies weren’t flattering, it was only after stepping out of that halo that she realized the difference was so stark.
Qu Ange lowered her head in deep thought, but to Xu Mi, she seemed dejected and upset. Xu Mi couldn’t understand why Qu Ange would feel sad over such baseless comments. The fact that Qu Ange was beautiful had been proven countless times since childhood.
During their school days, Qu Ange had been dubbed the school beauty the moment she enrolled, with countless boys pursuing her and even asking Xu Mi to pass along love letters. In high school, Xu Mi remembered people even fighting over her. But back then, Qu Ange had been carefree, brushing it off with, “This has nothing to do with me. I don’t even know them.”
Thinking this, Xu Mi opened Qu Ange’s Weibo post and saw comments like:
—”Probably just looks good because of low resolution and angles. Her selfies are so average.”
—”Yeah, so plain. You see girls like her everywhere.”
The initial indifference vanished abruptly, replaced by an inexplicable irritation in Xu Mi’s heart. She clicked to reply, but her habit of writing lengthy responses kicked in, and she ended up typing a lot. Qu Ange, however, had already moved on. Hearing the subway announcement, she said, “We’re almost there. Let’s find a hotel to rest for the night.”
Dissatisfied with her own reply, Xu Mi deleted it all and looked up at Qu Ange. “I’ll take some photos of you tonight, and you can post those instead.”
Qu Ange: “…Huh?”
Xu Mi thought to herself: I must prove to these netizens just how beautiful Qu Ange really is.
By the time they found a hotel, Qu Ange had mostly figured out what Xu Mi was thinking. She burst out laughing and said, “Don’t take what netizens say so seriously.”
Xu Mi said, “But what they said made me angry though I don’t even know why I’m angry.”
Qu Ange smiled and said, “I know, do you feel like they clearly don’t understand anything, yet they act as if what they’re saying makes perfect sense, and you can’t help but want to argue with them?”
Xu Mi frowned and replied, “It does feel like that.”
Qu Ange continued, “But there are thousands of people online, each with their own opinions. How could you possibly argue with all of them? They’re just speaking from the perspective they believe in.”
“But…”
“Actually, once you’re exposed to the gaze of many people, you have to accept criticism from all sides. It comes hand in hand with praise. If you enjoy the benefits of being in the public eye, you also have to endure the negativity—it’s only natural. You’ll get used to it eventually.”
Qu Ange spoke casually, but Xu Mi asked doubtfully, “Have you already gotten used to it?”
Qu Ange laughed awkwardly, “Hahaha, I… I haven’t either.” Truth be told, she still couldn’t help feeling angry at first. So, while everyone understands the logic, actually putting it into practice isn’t easy.
The two entered the room, and Xu Mi said, “Can this notification sound be turned off? It keeps vibrating.”
Qu Ange helped Xu Mi disable the alerts. Xu Mi picked up Qu Ange’s phone and saw another message on the screen criticizing Qu Ange’s looks as average. After a moment’s thought, she raised the phone and opened the camera. The screen showed Qu Ange, who was looking down at her phone, her hair tied into a loose low ponytail for convenience. With its voluminous and fluffy texture, it looked like a dark cloud resting on her shoulders. Beneath this “cloud” was a face as small as a palm, delicate and pale—not strikingly glamorous, but undeniably beautiful at first glance. Every feature seemed perfectly proportioned. Even without any photography experience, Xu Mi could tell this face was photogenic—exquisite and refined, like a classical beauty painted on white paper.
She pressed the shutter button. Click. Qu Ange looked up and smiled, “Are you taking photos of me?”
Xu Mi took another shot, then opened the album. Qu Ange quickly leaned over to look. The first photo showed her looking down at her phone with a serious expression, while the second captured her smiling at the camera.
Wasn’t this exactly the kind of “storytelling” photo that would later become so popular?
Qu Ange exclaimed, “You take such great photos! I’ll post these two on Weibo.”
Xu Mi set the phone down and said, “Go ahead and post them. I’m going to shower.” As she turned away, she couldn’t help but smile, confident that her photos would silence the critics online.
Qu Ange uploaded the photos but struggled with the caption. Xu Mi came out of the shower and urged her to wash up and sleep. In a hurry, Qu Ange added the caption— [Reading everyone’s comments—am I really not good-looking?]
After posting, she rushed to the bathroom. Even someone like Qu Ange had no energy for anything else today—exhausted from the long journey, she fell asleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow.
The next morning, they deliberately had tofu pudding downstairs—Qu Ange had the sweet version, while Xu Mi had the savory one. Qu Ange opened Weibo and found she had gained quite a few followers. Her new post had also garnered many comments, with people saying—
[Stop taking selfies, you’re already beautiful!]
Qu Ange found it amusing and showed it to Xu Mi, who lowered her head, pretending not to look. But while scrolling through her own phone, she “accidentally” clicked into Qu Ange’s post and couldn’t help but give it a like.
After eating, they went to find a rental agent to look for an apartment. Since it was Sunday and Zuo Qingyan wasn’t working, Qu Ange decided to settle in first. Fortunately, as someone who had been reborn and had experienced financial difficulties during this period in her past life, she was very familiar with the process and knew the best areas in City A for affordable rentals. With clear goals in mind, they quickly secured a place. A single room converted from a three-bedroom apartment, with the advantage of having a private bathroom and a shared kitchen in the common area. They agreed on a short-term lease for just one month, and the entire process went smoothly, leaving Xu Mi somewhat impressed by Qu Ange.
By the time they settled in, it was already evening. Since they had brought rice noodles from home, Xu Mi suggested skipping eating out and just stir-frying the noodles at home. Qu Ange was more than happy to agree. While waiting in the dining area, the sound of the door opening caught her attention. Curious, she looked up and saw a round-faced girl wearing black-rimmed glasses walk in. The moment she entered, she sniffed the air and said, “What’s that smell? It’s so fragrant.”
Then she spotted Qu Ange and exclaimed, “Holy crap, who are you? You’re seriously gorgeous.”
A bright smile instantly spread across Qu Ange’s face. Not bad! It seemed her new roommate was an easygoing person.
