- Chapter 8 - Sweet, Sour, and Bursting with Juice
Shen Yi repeated uncertainly: “A new encounter? What do you mean? Don’t tell me it’s the person you fooled around with at the bar last time?”
Seeing that Xie Sui didn’t deny it, Shen Yi let out a startled shout: “Ah?! That fast?”
Xie Sui picked up a piece of meat and stuffed it into his mouth.
“Your reaction makes me feel like I’m a scumbag.”
Chewing the food in his mouth, Shen Yi counter-asked indistinctly yet bluntly: “Aren’t you one?”
“No, I haven’t played with anyone’s feelings.”
Shen Yi hesitated to speak, failing to understand why scumbags never have any self-awareness.
Sigh, good men are truly getting rarer and rarer these days.
Shen Yi didn’t pursue the topic of whether he was a scumbag any further. “Who is that person? Do I know him? There aren’t many people who can fit your appetite.”
“Not telling you.”
Shen Yi couldn’t believe what he was hearing: “Are we still brothers? You’re even hiding and keeping it a secret from me.”
“He and I have only met three times in total. Whether I can hook him or not is still up in the air.”
“As if you could ever experience failure; which time did you not get your way as soon as you made a move?”
Xie Sui: “Where is it that exaggerated?”
Shen Yi reminded him: “Back in university, before I could even chase down someone’s shadow, you had already changed partners three times.”
He said as if losing heart: “It must be you blocking my romance luck. Why hasn’t a single person sent me a love letter?”
One moment he was still feeling despondent, and the next second he immediately restored his vitality again: “It’s fine, I’ll soon be able to experience a sweet relationship as well.”
Without needing Xie Sui to open his mouth to comfort him, Shen Yi had already coaxed himself back into good spirits.
“Is he quite handsome? How tall is he?”
The topic looped back around to Xie Sui’s new romantic adventure. Regarding Shen Yi’s erratic, leaping train of thought, Xie Sui had long since ceased to find it strange.
Xie Sui recalled for a moment: “He’s definitely at least 185 cm, two or three centimeters taller than me. Quite handsome, with a good physique.”
Shen Yi narrowed his eyes, leaning close to observe his expression: “Why do you look so infatuated? Don’t tell me you’re about to fall hard.”
“Fall hard?” Xie Sui let out a light laugh. “Shen Yi, when have you ever seen me trip up and fall over someone?”
“But this is indeed a bit unlike your style. In the past, those people were either summoned at your beck and call or dismissed with a wave of your hand; the longest wouldn’t exceed a single week. Lin Yan has stayed by your side the longest, yet I didn’t see you display much intense interest either, let alone wearing an expression that looks like you can’t wait to drag the other party straight to bed the moment he’s mentioned right now.”
Xie Sui ate his meal in a slow, methodical manner: “Therefore, that’s exactly why this is interesting.”
Shen Yi, who had been single since birth, said with an air of seasoned wisdom: “Fine, you’re the capable one. However, I must remind you, if you constantly walk along the riverbank, how can you avoid getting your shoes wet? You’d better pay attention yourself and don’t end up playing yourself right into it.”
Playing himself into it?
Xie Sui felt it was precisely the opposite.
“Don’t worry,” Xie Sui said. “I know what I’m doing.”
That evening, Xie Sui gave Lin Yan a phone call, telling him to go to Room 2307 and wait for him.
The excited mood on the other end of the line practically threatened to overflow through the screen. Lin Yan stated in a spoiled, coquettish tone that he was going to give him a surprise this time.
Xie Sui hung up the phone and casually tossed it aside, a touch of dullness and boredom suddenly welling up at the bottom of his heart.
This kind of thing that was within arm’s reach.
Ever since the last time he met with Jin Huaiqian, a week had already passed without the two meeting again.
Xie Sui could feel that Jin Huaiqian similarly possessed an intense interest in him, but he didn’t intend to act with undue haste.
The process of hunting required one to quietly lie in ambush, waiting patiently for the prey to step into the meticulously arranged trap step by step, completely unaware.
A week later, an internal seminar for the financial circle was hosted in the city center.
Several large financial institutions would invite investment tycoons within the industry to share investment experiences and market analyses. It was basically open internally, with only a small number of slots available to the outside public.
Xie Sui had Yan Shuzhi secure a slot for him. The moment Yan Shuzhi heard about this, his first reaction wasn’t to think that Xie Sui had suddenly begun to work hard and make progress, but rather:
“Who have you taken a fancy to again? This time you’ve managed to fight your way straight into the financial circle.”
Xie Sui slowly let out a sigh: “Zhizhi, am I this kind of person in your eyes?”
Yan Shuzhi didn’t buy his act, directly exposing his hypocritical performance: “Don’t talk nonsense with me. Restrain yourself a bit, and don’t provoke people you shouldn’t provoke.”
Xie Sui stood up from the sofa, walked over to Yan Shuzhi’s side, fished a piece of candy out of his pocket, unwrapped it, and stuffed it into Yan Shuzhi’s mouth: “Don’t worry. Enjoy this strawberry-flavored candy properly; this happens to be the very last piece.”
Seeing that he lacked any semblance of proper form, Yan Shuzhi simply had a headache, but he was also unable to do anything about him.
On the day of the seminar, Xie Sui arrived at the venue ahead of schedule. He didn’t go to the media area; instead, holding his credentials, he wandered aimlessly near the guests’ lounge area. It wasn’t until that familiar figure appeared at the end of the corridor that he stopped his footsteps, as if having found his target.
Jin Huaiqian was currently conversing in a low voice with someone else, the lines of his profile appearing both cold and focused under the corridor lights.
Xie Sui didn’t step forward immediately. He merely leaned sideways against a pillar not far away, his gaze falling upon Jin Huaiqian’s body, inch by inch, as if silently tracing his contours in a wordless manner.
Jin Huaiqian wore a suit today, his tie done immaculately.
His expression was focused, occasionally nodding his head in response to the other party’s words.
He had seen Jin Huaiqian’s appearance while wearing a suit several times. However, nearly every single time, it could provoke his impulse to tear that elite-like mask of his into shreds, leaving behind only the most primitive exchange.
A bout of emptiness rose within his throat. He rummaged through his pockets and found a piece of candy, the final grape-flavored piece.
Right at this moment, Jin Huaiqian concluded his exchange. He lifted his eyes to cast a glance in this direction, yet he didn’t walk over to look for him; instead, he turned around and walked toward another direction.
An expression of surprise surfaced on Xie Sui’s face. He immediately straightened his body and followed behind him at an unhurried pace.
Following him around a corner in the corridor, he saw Jin Huaiqian push open a door and walk inside.
His tongue rolled the candy around inside his oral cavity for a full turn. The corners of Xie Sui’s lips hooked up; he certainly wanted to see what kind of trick this man was playing.
He stepped forward slowly and pushed open the door; the interior of the room was pitch black. The next second, the door closed with a sharp “snap.” Jin Huaiqian suddenly appeared before his eyes, his gaze looking at him with heavy intensity.
Xie Sui met his line of sight: “Hi, President Jin. We meet again.”
Jin Huaiqian: “I, for one, didn’t know that Mr. Xie also possessed a fetish for tracking people.”
Xie Sui spoke with suggestive meaning: “The fetishes you don’t know about are plenty.”
Jin Huaiqian seemed to find his answer very interesting, letting out a light chuckle: “Then does Mr. Xie have some kind of business in looking for me?”
He was clearly asking what he already knew. Xie Sui cursed inwardly—this old fox.
Xie Sui didn’t answer his question, but asked instead: “I wonder what kind of fruit President Jin likes?”
“Fruit?” Jin Huaiqian repeated, his tone carrying no discernable emotion. “I don’t have anything I particularly like to eat. However, I can say that the fruit I ate recently tasted quite good.”
“What was it?”
Jin Huaiqian said: “Raspberries. They look bright and enticing, and biting down in one mouthful, they are sweet, sour, and bursting with juice.”
Xie Sui tilted his head up slightly, looking like a sly, crafty fox: “Then do you want to eat them right now?”
Jin Huaiqian looked at him: “Can Mr. Xie conjure them up?”
Xie Sui gave a charming, bewitching smile: “If you want to know, come closer.”
