Chapter 12: It Was More Like the Other Was Kissing His.
“I’ve visited that plot of land; it’s not bad. If you can take it, don’t just hand it over to someone else.”
Duan Yue was standing by the window making a phone call. He was intentionally controlling his volume, but he still woke Xiang Shuyu, who was lying in the hospital bed.
Xiang Shuyu opened his eyes dazed, staring at the ceiling. After a long while, he turned his face toward the silhouette standing by the window.
His memories from before he fainted were slowly returning. Xiang Shuyu remembered seeing Duan Yue before losing consciousness; it must have been Duan Yue who brought him here.
Only.
It seemed Duan Yue had changed his clothes?
Xiang Shuyu had a bit of a headache. He suspected his memory might be faulty; perhaps he had remembered wrong.
He propped himself up to sit. The slight movement was noticed by the Alpha standing with his back turned. Duan Yue looked back, saw that Xiang Shuyu was awake, and said to the person on the other end: “We’ll talk about the rest tomorrow. I’m hanging up now.”
Duan Yue put his phone back in his pocket and asked, “Did I wake you?”
Xiang Shuyu only shook his head.
“I told you to find a place to sit and wait for me so you wouldn’t get heatstroke. The hospital called me and said you fainted from heatstroke and were in the hospital; that’s why I rushed over.”
Duan Yue picked up a cup from the table, poured some warm water, and held it to Xiang Shuyu’s lips, carefully and meticulously looking after him as he drank. He continued: “The doctor also said your physical health is too poor. Hasn’t your mother fed you these past few years? Oh, the hospital tried to call your mother first, but she didn’t answer, so they called me.”
Duan Yue chattered on, but Xiang Shuyu didn’t take in a word. He was just lost in thought: Duan Yue only came because the hospital called him?
Then the one I saw earlier… was it a hallucination?
Xiang Shuyu’s headache worsened. His mind was a mess, and when he heard Duan Yue ask if he was unhappy, he suddenly remembered Ming Xiu and Gu Yi stealing his contract.
Xiang Shuyu didn’t really want to keep crying in front of Duan Yue, but he felt so wronged by this situation and had no one else to talk to. Finally, he couldn’t hold back his tears anymore and said softly, “My manager she has another newcomer who is better than me.”
Duan Yue frowned slightly and sat on the edge of Xiang Shuyu’s bed, listening intently.
“That Ming Xiu… he has always liked to steal my contracts. The manager favors him; she gives him whatever he wants and never consults me.”
Xiang Shuyu cried quietly, just silently shedding tears. He looked both aggrieved and pitiful, his eyes flushed red. He seemed to be forcing himself to hold on as he bit his lower lip and continued: “I ran into Ming Xiu at the company today. He asked Gu Yi what I was doing, and Gu Yi told him everything. He knows I’m going to Ducheng, so.,”
“So he wants to steal the Ducheng contract too?” Duan Yue was almost laughing from anger. “How can people be so shameless? Fine, let them try to fight for it. I’d like to see if they can snatch a contract out of my hands.”
“But Gu Yi said the planner over there has already agreed to the change.”
Xiang Shuyu hadn’t originally intended to “tattle,” but since things had reached this point, it had indeed taken on that nature. He couldn’t help saying a few more words, even digging up old grievances from when they were abroad.
Duan Yue had originally been angry because the Ducheng planner had decided to change performers on their own, but eventually, his attention drifted. He stared at Xiang Shuyu in a daze, feeling that this Xiang Shuyu the one complaining to him seemed much more alive.
The Xiang Shuyu he had seen before seemed to be wearing a false shell. His reactions to everyone, and even to himself, seemed to be the same. He wouldn’t resist or refuse; he always properly did everything for the benefit of others, and when he couldn’t do it well, he would just cry silently.
It turned out that even a person who could be considered cowardly could have moments of temper and small whims.
Duan Yue had previously thought Xiang Shuyu was a bit boring and couldn’t provide much novelty, just someone who was suitable for the moment to try being together with.
Now, his attitude had finally changed.
“Baby,” Duan Yue said with a bit of joy, reaching out to pinch his cheek. “You’ve learned how to tattle?”
Xiang Shuyu’s words stopped abruptly. After a moment, his face suddenly turned bright red, and he stammered: “I… I didn’t mean to tattle.”
“Knowing how to tattle is a good thing,” Duan Yue laughed. At this moment, he appeared gentle again, like a boyfriend who truly cared for and cherished his partner. “Alright, don’t be angry anymore. That Gu-whatever, and that planner I’ll settle it for you. It’s such a small matter, not worth crying over. What if you ruin your eyes?”
The fingers Duan Yue used to stroke him were gentle. Xiang Shuyu remembered the guzheng in the music room; he wanted to ask if it was a gift for him, but he felt he was being a bit self-important. The words were on the tip of his tongue, but he was too embarrassed to say them.
In the end, he only nodded and softly agreed.
In the evening, he was still supposed to go to the class reunion with Duan Yue.
Xiang Shuyu’s heatstroke wasn’t very severe, and he felt much better after receiving an IV drip.
Duan Yue first took him to lunch. Duan Yue’s taste was always excellent, and he was very good at observing Xiang Shuyu’s preferences; this was a personality trait and habit he had cultivated from years of maneuvering in the business world.
Xiang Shuyu didn’t know what kind of magic Duan Yue had. Although following Duan Yue sometimes made him feel their statuses were unequal, most of the time he was happy. Duan Yue’s presence could sweep away all his bad moods.
When he was in a good mood, he loved to smile not the fawning, insincere smile Duan Yue usually saw, but a genuine one.
He took Xiang Shuyu to pick out jewelry at a mall. Xiang Shuyu thought Duan Yue was buying for himself and was very serious while choosing, thinking of Duan Yue’s usual style and trying to pick the most suitable cufflinks.
Duan Yue stared blankly at his smiling eyes.
Xiang Shuyu’s eyes were the most beautiful part of him. What was originally a seven-out-of-ten appearance reached a ten because of those eyes.
Having such a boyfriend obedient, sensible, and beautiful was indeed something that brought prestige when brought along.
Duan Yue’s thoughts were a bit cluttered, and he became lost in thought.
Xiang Shuyu called him twice before he snapped back and asked, “What is it?”
“This one should suit you,” Xiang Shuyu held out the cufflinks. “They’re emeralds; they match your tie color today perfectly.”
Xiang Shuyu took Duan Yue’s hand, seriously fastening the cufflinks, then habitually held Duan Yue’s wrist to observe how they looked.
“Do you like them?” Duan Yue suddenly asked.
Xiang Shuyu looked up with a dazed expression. “Huh? Me… me?”
“Yes, I’m asking you if you like them,” Duan Yue said generously. “If you like them, I’ll buy them and give them to you.”
Xiang Shuyu froze on the spot for a moment, then quickly came to his senses and shook his head repeatedly. “I don’t need them. These aren’t very suitable for me anyway.”
He didn’t like wearing suits. Usually, his wardrobe consisted of common, artistic clothes; in fact, apart from those clothes, he had never tried to change his style. So, this design didn’t really count as one of his preferences.
Duan Yue thought for a while not very long, perhaps less than a minute then went to the counter, picked out a similar sapphire design, and bought both the sapphires and the emeralds Xiang Shuyu had liked.
The young master always spent money lavishly and didn’t care about money at all, only about the gift itself.
He placed the cufflinks in a small box into Xiang Shuyu’s hand and said, “Keep them safe. I’ll wear these first, and we’ll go change into another set of clothes later. What color do you like? I see you always wear light colors. Do you want to try some dark-colored clothes? Your skin is fair, so wearing dark colors will give you a stronger sense of presence. Always wearing light colors makes it easy to be overlooked.”
Duan Yue was rarely this talkative when discussing things. He arranged everything for Xiang Shuyu, but Xiang Shuyu didn’t feel angry.
He could feel that Duan Yue was seeking his opinion.
“Then it’s settled,” Duan Yue said, taking Xiang Shuyu’s hand. “Let’s go to the place I usually visit; they should have suitable ready-to-wear clothes. Speaking of which, who bought you that blue suit I saw you wearing at the banquet last time?”
Xiang Shuyu felt a bit embarrassed. He knew Jiang Xiayue’s taste was very average; perhaps Duan Yue also thought it was ugly.
“It was my mother,” Xiang Shuyu said softly. “The things she… she buys are always unattractive.”
“It was a bit unattractive,” Duan Yue laughed. “If it weren’t for your face carrying it, if it were Zuo Zhengye wearing it, he’d probably look like a wedding host. Do you know who Zuo Zhengye is? He’s the fat one from that day, wearing glasses and always speaking in classical Chinese…”
The warmth of the Alpha’s body temperature was transmitted through Xiang Shuyu’s palm; it was hot, like holding a hand warmer.
Xiang Shuyu’s cheeks felt hot. He didn’t say much the whole way, just listened intently to Duan Yue talking about his friends.
In fact, sometimes his feelings toward Duan Yue weren’t entirely about liking him; it was more about envy. He envied that Duan Yue could have a healthy, happy family; he envied that he could walk among people with such confidence; he envied that he had many friends.
He also envied the freedom he possessed.
Duan Yue chose a black suit for Xiang Shuyu, a color he had never tried before.
In Jiang Xiayue’s view, Xiang Shuyu’s temperament was better suited to light-colored clothes and accessories not aggressive, like gentle water, steady and inclusive. As long as people met him often, they would eventually like him.
But Duan Yue’s thoughts were completely different from Jiang Xiayue’s. He couldn’t even understand why Xiang Shuyu should be made to be as inclusive as an ocean current.
Humans, as a species, still need a bit of individuality to be remembered and noticed.
If Xiang Shuyu hadn’t taken that fall and bled so much back then, he might never have noticed that there was such a person in his social circle.
The color of the blood that day was too red, too piercing. In Duan Yue’s eyes, it looked like a flower blooming in the snow.
Xiang Shuyu’s flushed eyes and blood-filled lips both became part of that flower. He finally remembered Xiang Shuyu’s appearance in a single glance, remembered his voice, and his pheromones.
Shirley poppy such a vivid flower, yet Xiang Shuyu’s temperament was so bland. Thinking about it, it could only be attributed to him being raised too poorly.
Xiang Shuyu went into the fitting room to change. His jacket was left on the sofa. Duan Yue picked up the jacket and sniffed it lightly; the Omega’s pheromones remained on it. It smelled wonderful, and Duan Yue truly loved it.
“Duan Yue,” Xiang Shuyu’s voice suddenly came from inside the fitting room, a bit muffled. “Can you… can you come in for a moment?”
This suit had been stored for a while, and there was a loose thread on the cuff. He hadn’t noticed it before, and it had snagged on a button of his shirt.
He couldn’t see it clearly himself. He had been trying to unhook it for a long time but couldn’t manage it. He was too embarrassed to call a staff member, so he could only ask Duan Yue to come in and help.
Seeing Duan Yue arrive, Xiang Shuyu hurriedly turned around, showing the sleeve awkwardly dangling from his collar to Duan Yue: “It’s caught here, I can’t get it off.”
He didn’t notice the flash of amazement in Duan Yue’s eyes when he saw him.
Black suited Xiang Shuyu very well. This suit was one Duan Yue had previously had custom-made here. Later, he decided he didn’t like it, so it was altered and left at the bottom of a storage box.
Although it was a garment he had discarded, the fabric and design were top-tier. By simply adjusting it to Xiang Shuyu’s frame, it could beautifully outline his proportions.
The black clothing made Xiang Shuyu’s skin look snow-white. His previously bland temperament suddenly became much more cold and glamorous. Duan Yue’s eyes darkened slightly, but he first leaned down and lowered his head, biting the loose thread with his teeth.
Xiang Shuyu’s breath hitched.
With such a movement, Duan Yue’s breath almost penetrated his clothes to fall on his neck. It was more like the other was kissing his chest.
