It Seemed My Fiancé Hated Me, So I Distanced Myself—But for Some Reason, He Complained - Chapter 2
As soon as we arrived at the venue, all eyes turned toward us.
Cheers rose from the young ladies.
“Look, it’s Lord Ryan!”
“He’s so dashing today! I’m so glad I came to the party.”
“He’s as handsome as ever.”
The gazes of every woman in the venue were fixed on Lord Ryan.
Lord Ryan, who had looked so displeased earlier, now wore a friendly smile as if that previous expression had been a lie, beaming at everyone around him.
When they made eye contact with Lord Ryan, all the young ladies swooned, narrowing their eyes dreamily.
“Still, I just can’t accept that Lord Ryan’s fiancée is that Cinderella-like young lady.”
Someone’s voice carried through the air. The gazes that had been on Lord Ryan instantly shifted to me.
A different kind of stare. Mixed with hostility and scorn converged on me.
“Well, what can you do? Regardless of her personally, her family background is impeccable.”
“That may be true. But if we’re talking about young ladies from the same Meriam Marquisate, wouldn’t Lady Chelsea be a better match?”
“Exactly. Lady Chelsea would be perfect for Lord Ryan. Why on earth did it have to be the older sister?”
The young ladies’ words pierced my heart one after another.
Chelsea, my half-sister, has a lovely appearance that is the complete opposite of mine.
Her personality is bright and sociable, and whenever she attended parties or tea gatherings, she quickly became the center of attention.
Both Father and Stepmother doted on Chelsea, and the Meriam Marquisate seemed to revolve around her.
“…Absolutely. I wish I could have been engaged to Lady Chelsea instead. If the engagement had been arranged just a little later, I wouldn’t have had to be tied to an ugly woman like you.”
Overhearing the young ladies’ chatter, Lord Ryan muttered these words just loud enough for me to hear. My heart grew heavy and sank.
I knew I should have expected to be treated this way, but hearing it put into words made me feel so dejected. I was pathetic.
