- Chapter 21.1 - Forced to Marry the Prince 21
Yu Xianqing’s expression was a complete blank, his mind a tangled mess.
Suddenly hearing movement, he didn’t have time to be angry. He scooped Zelan up by the waist and rushed behind the thicket.
In his arms, Zelan clutched his collar, his eyes already somewhat vacant, still repeating what he had just said.
“Are you going to throw me away…”
“I’m not leaving.” Yu Xianqing whispered to him. “Hide first, and deal with your… wound.”
He didn’t even know if that counted as a wound.
The jagged rocks of the cliff were a natural visual barrier. The two of them hid among the cliffside vegetation, their silhouettes temporarily indistinguishable from the shadows of the trees.
Yu Xianqing set him down and took a simple medical treatment device from his spatial bracelet. He paused. “Pardon the offense.”
He pulled down Zelan’s pants and inserted the treatment device. As the medicinal liquid flowed in, Zelan let out a muffled groan, his fingers shifting to grip the edge of Yu Xianqing’s clothes, his knuckles turning white from the force.
Yu Xianqing frowned, observing Zelan’s exceptionally pale face and eyes so dark they looked almost blue.
Being angry after all, the human’s movements were somewhat heavy-handed. Zelan struggled slightly, but Yu Xianqing pressed him down, feeling below. The bleeding had finally stopped, and no more blood clots were coming out.
He breathed a sigh of relief and said expressionlessly, “Knows how to feel pain now? I thought you didn’t have a sense of pain.”
“Nonsense.” Zelan had lost too much blood, yet he still had the strength to bare his teeth at him. “If you’re so capable, you try it!”
Yu Xianqing gave him a deep look but didn’t argue. He took out a handkerchief to wipe away the blood beneath him. Most of it had already condensed into dark red clots; the more he wiped, the colder his expression became.
It was the first time Zelan had seen the human look this angry. He felt a bit flustered, yet also very furious. What right did he have to be angry with him?
“Weren’t you going to run? Not running now?”
Zelan spoke sarcastically, refusing to let go of Yu Xianqing’s sleeve, clutching it so hard it created countless wrinkles.
Yu Xianqing: “Do you think I don’t dare? Say one more word, and I really will run away with them and never come back.”
“You—”
Zelan stopped moving and glared at him hatefully, but with his pale face, huddled in the other’s arms with even his ears drooping weakly, he didn’t look very threatening.
Yu Xianqing closed his eyes.
Why bother arguing with Zelan? He had known long ago that the average IQ of felines wasn’t very high.
Before long, the two of them heard Albert’s anxious shouts from afar.
“Your people are here.” Yu Xianqing finally spoke, coldly tossing the handkerchief aside. “Time to go.”
“Go?”
As if a keyword had been triggered, Zelan instantly grabbed his hand. His sharp claws squeezed Yu Xianqing’s hand until bloody gashes appeared. He asked with a distorted expression, “Where are you going now?”
Yu Xianqing didn’t cry out in pain, he just looked at him quietly.
Stung by that indifferent gaze, Zelan instinctively retracted his claws.
After a while, Yu Xianqing lowered his eyes, looked at the other’s belly, and asked.
“This matter… why didn’t you tell me?”
“…” Zelan froze and turned his head away.
The real reason was simply impossible to say out loud. Otherwise, wouldn’t he be giving the human a chance to take an inch when given a mile?
“Speak.”
“Do you know if there’s any difference?”
Yu Xianqing: “…It’s not just yours. It’s my child too.”
Zelan used a tree for support to stand up, staring into his eyes. “So what if it is? Does it have anything to do with you? Don’t forget, you are just my prisoner now. What right do you have to question me?”
Yu Xianqing fell silent.
“It was that time, right?” he asked. “The time in the cave.”
Zelan didn’t answer, but his expression said everything.
Yu Xianqing suddenly found it ridiculous.
“Back then your appetite was poor, so I made lamb, but the moment you smelled it, you felt unwell.” Yu Xianqing murmured. “I should have noticed sooner.”
Zelan had been deliberately hiding it from him since then.
Including Albert, who had also been helping Zelan cover it up.
But why?
Why would Zelan hide something so important from him? Wasn’t this child the result of their joint efforts?
“What are you thinking about?” Zelan asked somewhat uneasily.
“It has nothing to do with you.”
The turmoil was quickly quelled, and Yu Xianqing was put in shackles once again.
The difference this time was that Zelan ordered him to be locked in a water dungeon. His limbs were bound, and everything below his waist was submerged in water.
If legs were soaked in icy water for too long, they would naturally lose sensation, no different from being broken.
If it exceeded three months, even if he were released later, he likely wouldn’t be able to walk very far. This was Zelan’s punishment for him.
On the first day in the water dungeon, Albert sneaked in to bring Yu Xianqing food.
The human’s thin clothing was soaked through by the water, faintly revealing his fair skin. His wet, black long hair clung tightly to his body, outlining a beautiful curve.
Hearing the sound of someone coming, Yu Xianqing seemed to be startled awake. He lifted his eyelids and looked over. Albert was dazed for a moment and quickly covered his eyes:
“The commander’s wife must not be disrespected! To see no evil, to see no evil!”
“I am no longer Zelan’s wife.” Yu Xianqing reminded him indifferently.
“Oh, right, right. You are the commander’s husband.” Albert nodded, not understanding the subtext at all. Yu Xianqing didn’t bother to explain and couldn’t help saying:
“The food can be sent by someone else. You don’t need to come anymore, lest Zelan suspects you.”
“I was just afraid others would neglect you.” Albert unlocked Yu Xianqing’s shackles and handed the steaming food to him.
Yu Xianqing ate for a while, then pushed the food back. “No more.”
Yu Xianqing took the initiative: “Lock me up.”
“Oh.”
Albert felt a bit bad. He locked Yu Xianqing up and, before leaving, secretly lowered the water level to give him some breathing room.
Yu Xianqing suddenly called out to him: “Wait.”
“Is something wrong?” Albert turned back.
“Has Prince Air asked about me?” Yu Xianqing asked.
“Both Air and His Majesty have asked about you. The commander didn’t give a reply, so they are bringing their own people here. They should arrive in about a month.”
Yu Xianqing lowered his eyelids.
After fishing for so long, are they finally coming?
Albert suddenly frowned. “Do you want them to rescue you?”
To his surprise, Yu Xianqing shook his head. “I don’t.”
“I just have one thing I’m not at ease about and wanted to ask for your help.”
Albert: “What is it?”
Yu Xianqing: “If possible, please have Qi Lin look after Zelan.”
Albert: “Qi Lin? But he’s Air’s…”
Yu Xianqing interrupted him: “At least he won’t hurt Zelan’s child. Let him take charge—unless you want Zelan’s child to fail to survive.”
With no one watching, given Zelan’s mental state, Yu Xianqing was truly worried about his belly.
Albert hesitated for a moment. “I will do my best. Only, if I agree to help, can you tell me why you wanted to leave with someone else back then?”
Yu Xianqing: “…Who on earth started the rumor that I was leaving?”
“Aren’t you colluding with the enemy?” Albert spoke the monstrous accusation gloomily.
“They all say you have improper relationships with beastmen like Air and Fran. That day, Fran’s people even tried to rescue you, which is why the Prince was so angry.”
Yu Xianqing: “…Anyone with eyes saw it. They were forcibly abducting me. Besides, I’ve been with you all this time; when would I have had the chance to be involved with them?”
Albert’s eyes widened. “So you actually didn’t want to leave, right!”
Yu Xianqing sighed, the chains clinking softly. “The kid hasn’t even been born yet. Where could I go now?”
Albert’s mouth dropped open. “Then why did you go out with Qi Lin that day?”
“I wanted to go to the storm zone to find Zelan.” Yu Xianqing shrugged. “Do you believe it?”
I believe it! How could I not!
Albert had never believed those rumors. He knew the human prince was so pure, beautiful, and innocent; how could he possibly do something to betray the Prince!
“…Wait a second.” Albert suddenly tapped his palm. “So, you actually like the Prince, don’t you?”
His eyes were sparkling, like a scavenger who had found some gossip. Yu Xianqing found it somewhat amusing, but when he went to speak, he didn’t know what to say.
Like? Or not like?
For Yu Xianqing, it wasn’t an easy question to answer, because any answer right now would be the wrong one.
Can they really talk about feelings?
“Go find Qi Lin. Don’t let Zelan get hurt again.”
Yu Xianqing never answered the question in the end, but Albert felt he had already glimpsed the truth.
The Imperial Concubine must like the commander but dare not express it. Not only has he been locked up for so long without a single word of complaint, but even now he’s worried about the commander’s child and doesn’t want to leave. If this isn’t love, what is?
He loves him so much!
Albert immediately ran to Zelan’s residence again. When he arrived, Zelan was peeling an orange to eat.
“Commander!”
He pushed the door open with too much noise; Zelan’s orange accidentally fell to the floor, and his face immediately darkened.
“Who allowed you to barge in without permission?”
“Commander, don’t worry about such small details at a time like this!”
Albert scrambled to pick up the orange, patted off the dust, and handed it to Zelan. Zelan pushed it away in disgust, so Albert peeled a segment and put it in his own mouth, only to immediately pull a face of agony from the sourness.
“Cough, cough… is this some unique military weapon…”
Albert pounded his chest desperately. Zelan said coldly, “A fellow with no taste.”
Since becoming pregnant, he craved sour things. He had to put vinegar in everything he ate, and even his oranges had to be the most sour ones.
Albert wiped his eyes and, suppressing the urge to cry, said, “Commander, I have something to tell you concerning the Imperial Concubine.”
Zelan’s expression shifted. “What, has he started throwing a suicidal tantrum?”
“No!” Albert countered loudly, even wearing an accusatory expression. “How can you say that! You have no idea how much the Imperial Concubine likes you!”
Zelan’s eyelids twitched, but he scoffed as if it were nothing. “He told you that? You can’t listen to humans, they’re full of lies.”
“It’s not that!” Albert was frustrated by his lack of progress and even took a bold step forward, shaking Zelan’s shoulders. “Commander, wake up! If the human prince didn’t like you, could he be that good to you?”
“That’s just his method for bewitching people.” Zelan pushed him away impatiently. “Even you were fooled.”
“Look, I told you and you didn’t believe me. How the human prince treats you versus how he treats others—can you really not see any difference at all?”
Zelan turned his gaze away and instinctively touched his belly. His lower abdomen still felt some pain, and the little monster inside was restlessly rolling around again, as if treating the birth canal as a playground.
“What difference could there be?”
He squeezed it as if for self-punishment, and the monster inside rolled frantically as if in pain. Cold sweat broke out on Zelan’s forehead. He braced himself against the table and reached into the cabinet for painkillers.
“Commander, you can’t take any more!”
Albert boldly took the medicine out of his hand. Zelan’s gaze turned into vertical slits, watching him with the pupils of a wild beast.
“Give it back to me.”
That gaze naturally carried the suppression of a predator. Albert trembled for a long while before thumping down onto his knees.
“I’ll go ask Qi Lin to come and check on you.”
“You dare?” Zelan irritably swept all the items off the desk. “Did the human teach you this too?! To lie to me and say he likes me, just so he can openly plant people by my side?”
“He never told me he liked you.” Albert whispered. “But how he treats you is obvious to everyone. Going out with Qi Lin that day was also because he was worried and wanted to find you…”
“I have a personal guard of a hundred thousand men, and none of them moved. He takes one person and says he’s looking for me?”
Zelan: “Albert, if you say another word like that, don’t blame me for turning you into spicy rabbit head.”
Albert’s legs were shaking, yet relying on a strange impulse, he said firmly:
“I finally know why the human prince doesn’t dare confess to you—you’re way too fierce! He must be afraid that if the confession fails, you’ll turn him into human jerky and hang him on the city gate!”
No soft curves could be found in Zelan’s handsome features. He suddenly shouted, “Guard.”
A tall beastman walked in from the door.
Albert looked at them in fear.
Zelan stroked his belly and said slowly, “The weather is getting cold. Make some rabbit BBQ to warm up the troops.”
“Yes.” The beastman answered and looked at Albert.
Albert trembled, looking at Zelan’s belly. Thinking of the unborn eldest Imperial grandson, he felt as if he were seeing his true master, and cried out shrilly:
“Even if you really want to turn me into rabbit BBQ, you can’t ignore the little Highness’s biological father! The human prince has a delicate body. In this freezing weather, if you lock him in the water dungeon, he’ll die in a few days! At that time, even if you don’t regret it, won’t the little Highness who lost his father repeat your tragedy from back then?”
Zelan stood up abruptly from his seat, a chilling murderous intent reflecting in his cold eyes.
“Shut up! I see you really have been possessed. Drag him down for me!”
“Commander! Mmph—”
Albert was gagged and dragged out. The room finally fell silent. Zelan covered his throbbing forehead, and seeing the sour orange on the ground, a surge of sinister fire immediately flared up.
He had truly underestimated the human. Even while locked up, he could still cause trouble.
Yu Xianqing closed his eyes and counted roasted pigeons. When he reached the 365th, someone entered the prison.
The newcomer had silver-white curly hair and handsome features, wearing a white cloak. In the dim environment, his whole person was more dazzling than light.
Yu Xianqing looked at the belly hidden under his cloak, saw nothing, and simply closed his eyes again.
“Yu Xianqing.” Zelan walked up to him. Seeing no reaction, he raised his voice again, “Yu Xianqing, look at me.”
The human opened his eyes, which were clear.
“What is it?” he said. “How do you have time to see me today?”
Zelan’s gaze swept over the waist-deep water. He said solemnly, “Do you want to get out very badly?”
“I do.”
Yu Xianqing gave a smile without a hint of gloom. “So, are you here to let me out?”
“Albert came to me today to seek justice for you.” Zelan questioned coldly. “Did you instigate him?”
Yu Xianqing looked at him steadily. “If I said no, would you believe me?”
Zelan certainly didn’t believe him, but the tone was too familiar. He almost instantly recalled a similar conversation from long ago.
“Are you someone sent by my Imperial Father?”
“If I said no, would Your Highness believe me?”
Zelan hadn’t believed him then either. It was hard for him to imagine that humans could be a purely kind species; they were sinister, cunning, and good at controlling people’s hearts. If one was manipulated by them, they wouldn’t even know how they died.
Therefore, Albert’s almost infatuated belief in the human was the part Zelan understood the least.
“Fine.” Zelan yanked the chain at his neck. Seeing Yu Xianqing show a look of discomfort, he instinctively loosened his grip and said with a cold face, “You can beg me. Maybe if I’m in a good mood, I’ll agree?”
“I beg you.” Yu Xianqing gasped, his clear gaze resting on him, his tone as if they were just chatting. “This place is very cold.”
Zelan stared at him for a long while, his eyes filled with scrutiny. Just when Yu Xianqing thought he wouldn’t agree, Zelan pressed a mechanism.
“You will be responsible for pleasing me from now on.” Zelan said. “Other than that, you have no privileges or status.”
All the chains snapped in response. The waist-high water suddenly disappeared through the drain.
Without support, Yu Xianqing’s numb legs gave way. Just as he was about to fall to his knees, someone grabbed him by the waist. Zelan picked him up.
“…” Yu Xianqing hesitated. “Your Highness, is this not very good?”
He never dreamed of a day where he would be held like this by a pregnant man. His waist was resting against Zelan’s protruding belly; it was absolutely surreal.
“Shut up. I don’t have a wheelchair for you here—unless you want another beastman to hold you.” Zelan frowned, his expression looking as if he wanted to bite him to death.
Yu Xianqing sighed in his heart and silently wrapped his arms around the other’s neck.
After only one day in the water, Yu Xianqing was brought back by Zelan.
According to the rules, the water dungeon was meant to last for three months.
Anyone with eyes knew this; how could Zelan not know?
But seeing Yu Xianqing looking sickly after only one day, he didn’t want to kill the man.
Yu Xianqing’s legs weren’t really able to walk for the time being. Zelan had originally called a military doctor to treat him, but Yu Xianqing said he didn’t want to trouble them and wanted Qi Lin, who was familiar with his physical condition, to heal his wounds.
Zelan almost flared up again, but in the end, for some unknown reason, he actually agreed.
Having not seen him for days, Qi Lin had lost weight, but Zelan clearly didn’t have the habit of abusing prisoners of war. His eyes were still bright. Upon seeing Yu Xianqing, his eyes lit up; if he had a tail, it might have been wagging like a propeller.
“No extra movements allowed.” Zelan emphasized. “Only allowed to look at the legs.”
Qi Lin looked at Yu Xianqing, and the other nodded.
“It’s not hard to treat.” Qi Lin said after an examination. “It might take some time, but the foundation hasn’t been injured. He can make a full recovery.”
“That’s good.” Zelan looked at his happy appearance and found it very grating. “It’ll make being a slave more convenient later.”
“…What?” Qi Lin froze and immediately looked at Yu Xianqing. “Is this true?”
“His Highness is teasing you.” Yu Xianqing said expressionlessly. “Where are there still slave systems now? It’s just a bit of foreplay.”
