- Chapter 8 - Delivering Lunch to Asayer
Meanwhile, at military headquarters.
Upon hearing the news of Admiral Asayer’s marriage, everyone had assumed he either wouldn’t get his husband’s consent to return to work today, or that he would arrive at headquarters covered in injuries from a volatile Male’s temper.
To their absolute surprise, the Admiral arrived looking as radiant, icy, and remarkably handsome as ever.
In fact, Asayer seemed to be in an exceptionally good mood today. The faintest, barely perceptible curve hovered at the corner of his lips, which somehow made his usually freezing gaze seem significantly less indifferent.
It seemed the Admiral’s new husband was treating him quite well.
Accompanied by the awestruck stares of the soldiers along the corridors, Asayer made his way into his private office.
Knock, knock.
He had barely sat down when a crisp knock sounded at his door.
“Enter.”
Receiving permission, Adjutant Days pushed the door open and stepped inside, immediately beginning his briefing on the day’s operational tasks.
Originally, Asayer had delegated his military responsibilities before heading to the marriage registry. He hadn’t expected his return to active duty to go this smoothly. But since he was back, he preferred to handle these matters firsthand.
“Admiral, it appears your husband is treating you very well,” Days said, his voice laced with genuine relief and happiness for his superior officer. The Star of the Empire was still shining bright.
Asayer narrowed his heterochromatic eyes slightly. “He’s alright.”
While Asayer was focused on his military duties, Lu Li was back at the villa, thoroughly engrossed in researching dishes tailored specifically to his wife’s palate.
In the kitchen, the bright overhead lights bounced off the pristine white tiles, accentuating the warm, cozy atmosphere. Wearing a cute, floral-patterned apron, Lu Li stood confidently before the stove.
He masterfully wielded a sharp chef’s knife, setting fresh ingredients onto the cutting board. Thud, thud, thud. The rhythmic sound of precise chopping echoed through the room as the vegetables were cleanly sliced into uniform sections and neatly arranged to the side.
Next, he swirled oil into the hot wok. The oil instantly sizzled as he tossed in freshly minced scallions, ginger, and garlic, unleashing an incredibly fragrant aroma that instantly filled the entire space.
Following that, he added the perfectly marinated meat, stir-frying it with rapid, practiced flips. The savory pieces tumbled across the high heat, turning from a raw red to a perfect white while locking in a mouthwatering scent.
Satisfied with the result, Lu Li carefully transferred the dishes into a premium multi-tier bento box, a proud smile gracing his face.
However, once everything was packed, he ran into a slight logistical crisis: transit.
He didn’t actually know how to pilot a sci-fi starship, nor did he know if a starship operator’s license was legally required in this world.
He walked out to the hangar bay and began nervously poking around the vessel’s control panel. Fortunately, Yuanyuan rolled up right behind him, helpfully reminding its master that he could simply input the coordinates for autopilot. A physical pilot wasn’t strictly necessary.
Lu Li let out a massive sigh of relief. Thank goodness for autopilot otherwise, he would have broken his very first promise to Asayer on day one!
Setting the destination for military headquarters, Lu Li cradled the warm bento box and settled comfortably into the passenger seat as the vessel lifted off.
Before long, Lu Li successfully arrived at his destination.
Standing before the primary gates, he couldn’t help but marvel at the sheer, disciplined gravity of the military sector.
Massive stone pillars flanked the entrance of the solemn headquarters, engraved with a majestic military crest that symbolized the nation’s highest authority and the army’s supreme glory. On either side of the barrier, sentry soldiers stood in razor-sharp uniforms, their gazes piercing and absolute.
In the distance, across the expansive training grounds, rows of soldiers were undergoing intensive tactical drills, their rhythmic cadences echoing through the air. The entire perimeter was thick with a heavy atmosphere of absolute order.
The moment Lu Li stepped toward the threshold, a guard immediately stepped forward to intercept him.
“Greetings, Male Lord. May I ask whom you are seeking? I must formally report your request to the inner sectors before you can be granted entry.”
The sentry guard had literally never seen a Male casually stroll up to military headquarters before. But since military protocols were absolute, he steeled his nerves to stop the young Male, internally praying that this Lord wouldn’t take offense and take out his anger on them.
To the guard’s absolute shock, the Male before him didn’t throw a tantrum at all. Instead, he spoke with an incredibly gentle, approachable tone.
“I’m here to find Asayer. Could you please let him know?”
Looking for Admiral Asayer? Could this be… the Admiral’s new husband?
Seeing how remarkably easygoing Lu Li was, the guard grew bold enough to ask, “May I inquire… are you Admiral Asayer’s husband?”
How could Lu Li possibly pass up a golden opportunity to mark his territory?
“That’s right! I’m Asayer’s husband,” Lu Li beamed proudly, a radiant smile gracing his lips. “We look pretty perfect together, don’t we?”
As he spoke, his dark, deep eyes crinkled with genuine warmth, appearing soft and exceptionally endearing. The sentry guard completely dazed out for a second, only snapping back to attention when the sound of approaching footsteps echoed from the inner corridor.
The moment Asayer received word that Lu Li was waiting at the front gates, he had immediately dropped his paperwork. He recalled the young Male’s parting words from this morning about delivering lunch, but he hadn’t truly expected him to show up.
When Lu Li caught sight of Asayer, his eyes instantly lit up, tracking the silver-haired general with a glittering, unblinking intensity looking exactly like an enthusiastic puppy waiting for its owner to come home.
Seeing that expression, Asayer felt a sudden, unfamiliar wave of softness ripple through his chest.
“My Lord, you actually came.”
Hearing Asayer address him with the overly formal and distant (the respectful form of ‘you’), Lu Li’s eyebrows knitted slightly. Man, that formal title sounds so incredibly jarring.
He internally resolved that once they reached the privacy of the office, he was going to have a proper, serious chat with Asayer about his choice of words.
“Asayer, I brought you lunch! Let’s eat together!” Lu Li chimed happily, falling into step beside him. “We’ve only been apart for half a day, but I missed you so much already!”
“Did you miss me too, Asayer?”
Lu Li chatted away vibrantly the entire walk back. Watching his bright, incredibly affectionate behavior, the surrounding officers along the corridor were practically green with envy.
How on earth did Admiral Asayer score this kind of luck? To be matched with such an incredibly sweet, doting little husband!
When a young Male looked up at you with those shimmering, expectant eyes, you’d honestly want to hand him the entire galaxy on a silver platter.
Asayer wasn’t entirely accustomed to a Male being this clingy. He wanted to say something appropriate to respond to his little husband, but he was simultaneously terrified of saying the wrong thing and breaking the young Male’s spirit. Curiously, the general realized he really didn’t want to see those bright eyes droop, nor did he want to see any negative emotions clouding that face.
Once inside the office, Lu Li took a quick, analytical look around.
Asayer’s workspace was immaculate and minimalist clear evidence that its owner valued cleanliness and absolute order. Most importantly, there wasn’t a single trace of any other Male’s presence. Satisfied, Lu Li began unpacking the dishes onto the desk one by one.
Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs, stir-fried pork slices with crisp celtuce, a side of lightly sautéed fresh greens, and a bowl of sweet, soothing white fungus and pear soup.
Asayer had been working all morning and hadn’t felt particularly hungry, but the moment the rich, steaming aromas wafted over, his appetite was instantly kicked into overdrive.
Truthfully, if Lu Li hadn’t shown up, Asayer had fully intended to just down a tube of sterile nutrient paste to save time. That was the standard lunch for active military personnel. Fresh meals were typically only prepared for high-profile diplomatic banquets or to appease demanding Males. For ordinary soldiers, simply hitting their caloric intake was enough.
Lu Li quietly observed his wife’s movements. Sure enough, Asayer still heavily favored sweet and sour profiles his very first bite went straight for the pork ribs. He clearly disliked overly bland foods and took a distinct liking to the sweet pear soup.
Noted, Lu Li thought, his internal notepad already mapping out a grand strategy for the dinner menu.
Noticing that Lu Li was just resting his chin on his hands, happily watching him eat without taking a single bite himself, Asayer paused.
“My Lord, you should eat as well.”
Hearing his wife show genuine concern for him, Lu Li’s smile widened into an absolute beam. My wife cares about me! Hehehe.
