Inheriting a Farm Made Me an Internet Sensation - Chapter 7
Lin Muhan felt her grip on Tan Xiao’s hand tighten slightly, her brow furrowing.
Studying law had never been her own intention; it had been forced upon her by her father, a gold-medal lawyer. What had he said back then? That if she didn’t follow his arrangements, he would sever all ties with her.
She didn’t actually care about her father disowning her, but she didn’t want to make things difficult for her mother, so she eventually compromised.
After entering university, she originally wanted to use her grades as a form of rebellion, but Su Han told her that was the most childish approach and a betrayal of her own life’s responsibility.
Upon graduation, she received an invitation from Su Han and became a legal counsel for Huangtian International.
Counting the days, in two more months, she would have been at Huangtian International for a full two years.
Huangtian International had always maintained good relations with others. In her nearly two years there, she had only appeared in court twice, and both cases involved the private affairs of senior executives.
A leisurely life was fine, but as time went on, it inevitably became a bit stifling. Coupled with the unsolved mystery surrounding Tan Xiao, she had developed an interest in the business here at the farm. Under normal circumstances, she wouldn’t have bothered making these extra trips.
Instead of being secretly happy, Tan Xiao actually had the nerve to mock her for having nothing to do.
The anger in her heart rose rapidly. She glared at Tan Xiao: “Does what I need to do or where I need to go require your guidance?”
The gushing fury in those eyes and the gritted teeth with which she spoke made Tan Xiao’s scalp tingle. She tried to salvage the situation: “I didn’t mean it like that, don’t…” she tried to step back, “…misunderstand.”
“Whether it’s a misunderstanding or not, do you think I can’t hear it?” Lin Muhan moved away from the computer and stood up straight, less than thirty centimeters away from Tan Xiao. “Or do you think I’m just a fool in your eyes?”
Tan Xiao shook her head repeatedly, her body leaning back uncontrollably. A flash of regret crossed her phoenix-shaped eyes; she really shouldn’t have run her mouth.
This “touch-and-explode” personality was truly exhausting.
Receiving no answer, Lin Muhan forcefully yanked the woman toward her.
Even though Tan Xiao was in a defensive state, the force pulled her right in front of Lin Muhan, her lips accidentally brushing against Lin Muhan’s ear.
That cool sensation made her whole-body tense up, and her heartbeat involuntarily quickened.
Lin Muhan had the same reaction; her mind was entirely filled with that soft sensation from a moment ago.
Tan Xiao’s lips were softer than cotton. The breath she exhaled drifted over her ear canal and the side of her face, feeling like several ants crawling past—it was a numbing, tingling sensation.
Realizing what had happened, Tan Xiao felt her cheeks burning. She stiffly lowered her gaze, tried to pull her arm back, and immediately retreated a few steps, turning her side toward Lin Muhan: “I—I’m sorry.”
Tan Xiao’s voice snapped Lin Muhan out of her thoughts. She gave Tan Xiao a harsh glare, let out a cold snort, turned around, and slammed the door as she left.
The loud bang of the door gave Tan Xiao a start. She looked back at the door, and after confirming that Lin Muhan had departed, she raised a hand to pat her chest in lingering fear.
Too scary.
However, that rose scent on Lin Muhan was actually quite pleasant.
And Lin Muhan’s body temperature seemed a bit on the low side.
She shook her head. No, she couldn’t keep thinking about it.
In the opposite room, Lin Muhan leaned against the door. Once her anger dissipated, a slight throb of excitement remained.
She suddenly remembered a phrase she had once seen online: M-shaped lips are suitable for kissing.
Tan Xiao’s lip shape was an M, and the texture was soft. If they were to kiss…
She stomped her foot and warned herself: Stay sober, don’t be bewitched by Tan Xiao. Don’t forget, she has looks but no brains.
But… could someone with no brains produce such a detailed business plan?
Still, no. She was just mocking you.
Thinking of this, she immediately calmed down. She took out her phone and sent a WeChat message to a friend she had met at a bar.
The Sister is Queen: Any gatherings lately?
Hunter: Has Sister Han finally seen the light?
Hunter: As long as Sister Han wants it, you can take your pick of handsome guys or beautiful girls. Just don’t be like last time, Sister Han, where the person had already finished their shower and you suddenly ‘couldn’t do it’ anymore.
Seeing the last sentence, Lin Muhan clenched her hand.
Although she frequented the night scene and claimed to be a master of romance, she had never actually taken that final step.
It wasn’t that she was intentionally preserving her purity; it was simply that no one had ever been able to arouse that kind of desire in her.
She thought for a moment before tapping the screen.
The Sister is Queen: That depends on whether the person is ‘my dish’ or not.
Hunter: Don’t worry, this time I’ll make sure to find every type for you.
Lin Muhan put down her phone, left her room, turned the handle, and opened the door. Looking at the door not far away, she decisively looked away. Who cared about coming here? She was going back to the city right now.
Just as she reached the yard, several helpers surrounded her.
“Lawyer Lin, there’s something I don’t know if I should say,” Wang Feng said hesitatingly, leading the group.
Lin Muhan stopped her pace: “Go ahead.”
Wang Feng glanced upstairs and whispered, “Did you know? Little Tan won’t let us use chemical fertilizers anymore. These crops… if you don’t use fertilizer, how are they supposed to grow?”
As soon as these words fell, the people who came with Wang Feng nodded repeatedly.
Lin Muhan pondered for a moment and said slowly, “Since it’s her arrangement, there must be a reason for it. Just follow her instructions.” After speaking, she stepped out toward where the car was parked.
But Wang Feng was unwilling to give up. Following her, she said, “We are all farmers. When it comes to planting crops, we have much more experience than Little Tan.”
“So what if you have more experience?” Lin Muhan became a bit impatient. “Can you guarantee all your experiences are correct?”
Those two rhetorical questions left Wang Feng and the others stunned on the spot.
In fact, on the third day after Tan Xiao arrived, she had arranged for Chen Cuihua and Zhang Da to contact nearby livestock farms to collect manure and food scraps, saying they would be used for fermentation to serve as fertilizer.
Those things were so dirty and troublesome. That was why she had gathered people who shared her opinion to find Lin Muhan, hoping to get Tan Xiao to change her mind.
“Alright, if there’s nothing else, take a break. We have to go to the fields this afternoon.” Lin Muhan quickened her pace and quickly got into her car.
She didn’t understand farming, nor did she understand why Tan Xiao made such arrangements. She only knew that if Tan Xiao arranged it, there must be a reason.
Furthermore, she disliked this behavior of “snitching.” If Tan Xiao’s arrangements were truly unreasonable, they could raise it to her face; there was no need to go behind her back to disparage her.
Tan Xiao, who was sleeping soundly, knew nothing of this. After she woke up, she put on her sun hat and ice-silk long sleeves and headed to the fields.
Because the farm was so large, even with the addition of temporary workers, they were busy for over twenty days.
After a few days of rest, it was time to plant the honey potatoes in the fields. This whole process took another twenty-odd days.
During this period, Lin Muhan didn’t come to the farm again. Instead, students from the Agricultural University came to help whenever they were free. Over time, Tan Xiao naturally became well-acquainted with them.
One day, just as Tan Xiao returned from the fields, she saw a white Audi parked at the courtyard gate.
She didn’t want to pay it any mind, but the car honked its horn. When the sound faded, Lin Muhan’s voice rang in her ears.
“Get in.”
Tan Xiao looked confused and turned back to ask, “Where are we going?”
“Auntie Huang is back in the country. She said she wants to see you.”
“My little aunt?”
Lin Muhan asked back, “Who else?”
Tan Xiao looked down at herself—at the mud stains splashed on her clothes from watering—and said softly, “Wait a moment, I’ll go change.”
“Twenty minutes.”
Upon hearing this, Tan Xiao trotted upstairs and finished washing up at top speed. Finally, she picked out a white long dress to change into, picked up the orchid she had been raising for twenty days, and got into the car at the very last second.
She had been at the farm for nearly two months. In these two months, she hadn’t seen Su Han, let alone her “cheap” little aunt.
Since it was their first meeting, going to see an elder empty-handed wasn’t quite right. But with the little money she had left, the gifts she could choose were very limited. After thinking it over, she painfully decided to choose this pot of orchid.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, Lin Muhan glanced at the orchid in Tan Xiao’s arms and then looked away.
Thinking of something, she turned her head back to look again. The flowers were brilliantly colored with a peculiar shape, resembling a jumping frog. This… was a Ghost Orchid.
The Ghost Orchid was recognized as prestigious and rare, the heart’s treasure for countless orchid lovers.
The reason she knew this was thanks to her mother, who had tried every possible way to get a pot of Ghost Orchid to raise, but no one was willing to part with theirs.
She cleared her throat and asked with feigned composure, “Where did you get this orchid?”
“I won it,” Tan Xiao said truthfully.
She had won this orchid from Professor Wu of the neighboring Agricultural University. According to Sun Le, Professor Wu truly treasured this orchid.
The reason she had contact with Professor Wu was because of those students.
At the beginning of the month, a few students were troubled by a research topic. After hearing about it, she couldn’t keep her mouth shut and just offhandedly mentioned a few things. The students took it to heart and even received praise from Professor Wu.
The topic was quite obscure and wasn’t something sophomores usually touched upon. The students couldn’t help but tell the truth when questioned, and after Professor Wu heard about it, he came looking for her.
That Professor Wu was as stubborn as an old man. She originally didn’t want to deal with him, but the viewpoint Professor Wu proposed was flawed. This involved her professional field, so she immediately argued back.
Professor Wu was stubborn and wanted to compete with her, insisting he wasn’t wrong. This pot of orchid was the stakes.
“Want to trade?” Lin Muhan added. “I know you want to take this orchid as a gift for Auntie Huang. I can take you to pick out other gifts; just give this orchid to me, okay?”
This was the first time Tan Xiao had seen Lin Muhan so careful and excited. Curious, she leaned in slightly and asked, “You like orchids?”
“My mom likes them; she’s always wanted this variety.” As she spoke, Lin Muhan turned her head, and their eyes met.
