Inheriting a Farm Made Me an Internet Sensation - Chapter 4
The rooster moved with incredible speed. By the time the slow-reacting Lin Muhan finally tried to step aside, the bird was already lunging straight at her.
Tan Xiao, who was rushing close behind, had the word “Watch out!” on the tip of her tongue, but the shout died in her throat as she froze, stunned by the scene before her.
They’re stood Lin Muhan—clad in a sky-blue maxi dress, sunglasses perched on her head, makeup impeccably applied—pinching the rooster’s neck firmly with a hand adorned only by a simple ring.
The rooster hadn’t expected Lin Muhan to be so fierce. It kicked its legs wildly, trying to break free, but Lin Muhan’s grip was so powerful that all it could do was let out terrified, strangled squawks.
It wasn’t just Tan Xiao; even Zhang Da and the others were terrified by the sight.
In their impression, Lawyer Lin was noble and elegant. Her current demeanor didn’t possess even a trace of that image.
Snapping back to her senses, Tan Xiao hurriedly cried out, “Lawyer Lin, please, mercy for the chicken!”
Lin Muhan didn’t listen. She stared intently at the bird in her hand, which was starting to roll its eyes back, and said sternly, “It ambushed me.”
Tan Xiao held both hands up and approached cautiously, pleading the bird’s case. “It… it didn’t do it on purpose.”
“If it wasn’t on purpose, does that mean it doesn’t have to take responsibility?” Lin Muhan countered.
Tan Xiao’s expression stiffened. “From a legal perspective, its sentence could be commuted.”
Lin Muhan gave a cold snort, her grip not loosening one bit. “Give me one reason to let it go.”
“First, it’s a graduation thesis for a student at the Agricultural University. Second, it can be traded for a batch of seeds for the farm.”
Lin Muhan looked toward Chen Cuihua, who was walking over, and asked, “Are the farm’s funds really that tight?”
Chen Cuihua stopped immediately. She didn’t know whether to nod or shake her head. Looking helpless, she turned to Tan Xiao, hoping she would bail her out.
Sensing her difficulty, Tan Xiao explained, “Every student at the Agricultural University has a different research topic. Take tomato varieties alone—they have at least thirty or forty types over there, and half of those seeds aren’t even available on the market.”
“You make it sound plausible.” Recalling her purpose for coming today, Lin Muhan asked, “You’re making such a grand show of changing varieties—how much confidence do you have that you can pay back the debt you owe?”
Tan Xiao reached Lin Muhan and extended both hands, hoping to rescue the rooster that was now incessantly rolling its eyes. However, Lin Muhan pulled her hand back, signaling that if Tan Xiao didn’t answer, she could forget about getting the bird back.
Tan Xiao had no choice but to withdraw her hands and offer her prediction: “With farming, seventy percent depends on Heaven.”
“Don’t give me that nonsense. Under normal circumstances, how much confidence do you have?” Lin Muhan lost her patience. She had thought about it for a long time on the way here and was still reluctant to place her bets on Tan Xiao. But hearing Tan Xiao speak with such professional authority just now, her intuition told her that perhaps there really would be a miracle.
She knew this intuition was somewhat ridiculous, but she couldn’t bring herself to dismiss Tan Xiao’s decision without any evidence.
Tan Xiao did a mental calculation before replying, “Seventy percent.”
“I don’t know whether to call you confident or conceited.” Lin Muhan tossed the chicken directly to Tan Xiao. When she saw the light flickering in Tan Xiao’s eyes, she changed her tune. “Give me a detailed proposal.”
Tan Xiao caught the chicken with quick reflexes. The relief that had just welled up in her heart vanished instantly upon hearing Lin Muhan’s second half. “Can I just tell you verbally? Making a written proposal takes too much time.”
Lin Muhan refused heartlessly. “No. I’ll give you only two days. If your proposal can’t convince me in two days, then everything at the farm stays exactly as it was.”
Mm, as expected, there needs to be a justification. With a justification, the psychological burden feels a bit lighter.
Tan Xiao opened her mouth to argue, but upon seeing Lin Muhan’s icy gaze and her deliberately clenched fist, she swallowed her words and lowered her head in resignation. “Fine.”
One must recognize the circumstances to survive; she couldn’t reason with a violent beauty.
Especially a violent beauty who studied law.
An hour later, the round-faced girl found Tan Xiao, who was busy sowing seeds, while panting for breath.
The girl glanced at the rooster—now tied by its leg to a wooden stake nearby—and patted her chest in lingering fear.
She took a few steps forward to Tan Xiao’s side and handed her a plastic bag. “I didn’t know exactly which varieties you wanted, sister, so I just asked for all the seeds my juniors had on hand.”
Chen Cuihua wanted to know the difference between seeds from the Agricultural University and those from the market, so she immediately stepped closer and craned her neck to look inside the bag.
Unlike market seeds, these didn’t have professional packaging. They were simply kept in zip-lock bags with the variety, maturation period, and color written on the outside.
Tan Xiao took the bag and turned toward the rooster. “You can take your chicken back now.”
The girl looked at her with hesitation. After walking a few steps, she stopped again, her face flushing as she asked softly, “Sister, can I… can I discuss something with you?”
Tan Xiao raised a hand, signaling her to go ahead.
“My juniors asked me to ask you if you could lend them some land,” she lowered her head, her ears and face turning crimson. “They said they could help you look after the crops and leave the seeds for you as well.”
Tan Xiao didn’t hesitate. “Sure.”
The Agricultural University’s land was limited to begin with, not to mention the havoc wrecked by the poultry from the Veterinary Medicine Department. To graduate smoothly, having off-campus land support was the safest bet.
The eyes of the girl and the hired hands were filled with surprise.
Sitting under a sun umbrella in the distance, Lin Muhan couldn’t hear what Tan Xiao and the girl were saying specifically, but judging by Chen Cuihua’s expression, Tan Xiao must have made another shocking decision.
Hmph, she really acts like the farm is hers already, even though nothing is settled yet.
“Then I’ll go back and tell them the good news right away.” With that, the girl started walking, but remembered something and stopped, looking back at Tan Xiao. “My name is Sun Le. Sister, what’s yours?”
“Tan Xiao.”
“Then see you later, Sister Xiao Xiao.” After saying that, Sun Le went straight to the rooster. Sensing Lin Muhan’s gaze, she turned her head and gave a small smile.
Lin Muhan returned the smile, then shifted her gaze back to Tan Xiao, who was sowing seeds with the others.
What she had seen here today had already overturned her inner assumptions about Tan Xiao, and it sparked a bit of curiosity within her.
The sun hung high in the sky. Seeing that the sowing was mostly finished, Tan Xiao wiped the sweat from her forehead. “Let’s call it a day!”
Everyone was naturally happy and made their way back to the courtyard one after another.
Her body felt uncomfortably sticky with sweat, so Tan Xiao was the first to rush to the bathroom upon returning.
After changing and washing up, she was drying her hair with a towel when she heard a sound coming from the room opposite hers. She immediately stood up and opened the door to look.
Through the partially closed door, she saw Lin Muhan trying to make the bed. Her gingerly movements made it obvious she had no idea what she was doing.
“Come over here and help me make this,” Lin Muhan commanded.
Tan Xiao couldn’t refuse. Resigned to her fate, she went to the room. Seeing the bedsheet spread out in a messy, crooked fashion, her mouth twitched. “Even a three-year-old could do a better job than this.”
Lin Muhan kicked her own door open wider and glanced at Tan Xiao’s neatly made bed. She leaned against the doorframe with her arms crossed. “This is the only thing you can find a sense of achievement in when comparing yourself to me.”
Tan Xiao, who had just tied her wet hair up with the towel and leaned over to help make the bed, opened her mouth to retort.
Lin Muhan preemptively struck. “Law, looks, or taste—can you beat me in any of those?”
Tan Xiao’s mouth hung open slightly. She… really couldn’t.
After replying to a WeChat message, Lin Muhan urged, “Don’t go out this afternoon. Hurry up and write that proposal.”
“You could also come and get it in two days,” Tan Xiao suggested while smoothing the bed.
“No,” Lin Muhan said stubbornly. If that proposal was actually feasible, she planned to use it to slap Su Han’s face for setting her up.
If it wasn’t, the farm could return to its original track sooner, and the money in her pocket would be saved.
Tan Xiao said nothing more. After making the bed, she prepared to leave, only for Lin Muhan to tell her to tidy up the room as well.
She was unwilling, but unable to withstand Lin Muhan’s threat of a fist, she could only grit her teeth and tidy up.
She was waiting for the day Lin Muhan fell into her hands; she would definitely settle all the old and new accounts with her then.
At the same time, she mourned for whoever would marry Lin Muhan in the future. With a beauty who resorted to physical threats at every turn, life would be very difficult indeed!
After lunch, Tan Xiao returned to her room intending to lie down for a bit. Before her body could even touch the bed, Lin Muhan grabbed her collar and dragged her to the computer.
“Do the proposal.”
Tan Xiao raised her hands. “I promise, I’ll definitely give it to you within two days. Just be magnanimous and let me have a nap.” With that, she tried to slip away.
Lin Muhan used force to pull her back again. “Don’t even think about competing with pigs for their job.”
Tan Xiao looked at the ceiling, speechless. Will someone please take this violent woman away?
Her inner plea received no response.
She let out a sigh and rubbed her sore eyes before sitting upright in the chair, opening the folder on the desktop, and starting on the proposal.
To supervise Tan Xiao, Lin Muhan sat in the single sofa the whole time.
Waiting was inherently boring. Even though she tried her best to hold out, she eventually succumbed to sleepiness and drifted off.
When she woke up, she immediately searched for Tan Xiao’s figure. Seeing that Tan Xiao was still in the same position she had been in before she fell asleep, she breathed a sigh of relief.
Propping her chin on one hand, she gazed sideways at Tan Xiao’s profile.
She discovered that when Tan Xiao was fully immersed in work, her body naturally emitted a dazzling radiance.
A gentle breeze drifted in, lifting Tan Xiao’s long, wavy hair draped over her back and fully revealing the beautiful curve of her side profile. Her curled eyelashes trembled slightly, fluttering like butterfly wings that tugged at one’s heartstrings. Her eyes and nose were delicate and petite, and her nimble tongue would occasionally peek out to lick her slightly dry, tender lips.
Lin Muhan had seen lazy people before, but never someone who would endure thirst while working so hard.
She got up from the sofa, poured a glass of water in the living room, and placed it gently on the computer desk. Tan Xiao, however, felt nothing, her gaze still fixed intently on the computer screen.
Lin Muhan picked the glass up again and used her other hand to nudge Tan Xiao. “Drink some water. I don’t want to be accused of mistreating someone.”
Tan Xiao reached out to take it, her lips meeting the rim of the glass as her throat bobbed rhythmically. Droplets of water escaped from the corner of her mouth, sliding down her neck and disappearing into the valley between her breasts. Her shirt was also dampened in a small patch, coincidentally right between her chest.
Catching a glimpse of the intimate scene, Lin Muhan averted her eyes in time, her expression turning somewhat unnatural.
