- Chapter 9 - Playing the Zither and Blowing the Sheng (Part 8). This amulet carried far too many memories for him.
The campfire emitted bursts of black smoke, with fish skewered on tree branches resting over it, while the three of them sat gathered in a circle around the fire.
Lin Chubai gently flipped the fish, and seeing that they were almost done grilling, he took them off and placed them aside to cool down a bit. “What do you think is the relationship between this Xiao Lan and Dingxiang?”
This question was directed at Ye Zhou, but it was snatched up by Song Siyun before he could answer. “Not very close, I suppose. Dying so miserably, people would normally want them to rest in peace, but she just left her hanging right there.”
Ye Zhou seemed to disagree with that thought, frowning slightly. “Would someone who is not close help wipe a coffin?”
Listening to the two of them talk, Lin Chubai was momentarily at a loss for words, feeling strongly that things were not as simple as they seemed, and he furrowed his brows in deep thought.
Dingxiang was the source of the disaster, yet her corpse was kept by the old woman. These two definitely had a connection.
And then there were the old man and the village chief. Judging by the village chief’s reaction, this disaster was most likely related to him. But as for the old man, his role was still unknown.
This bold yet unsupported hypothesis popped into Lin Chubai’s mind, but before he could ponder it in detail, a dense crowd of people appeared in the distance, looking like ghosts in the night.
Ignoring the approaching crowd, Ye Zhou and Lin Chubai picked up the cooled grilled fish and began sharing them. After all, nothing was more important than filling their stomachs first.
Song Siyun, on the other hand, was not nearly as composed. Seeing that the other two were still acting as if nothing was wrong, he instantly panicked, placing both hands on Lin Chubai’s shoulders and shaking him wildly. “Are we not going to run?”
A piece of delicious fish meat in Lin Chubai’s hand shook loose and fell onto the ground. His expression darkened instantly as he stared at the fish on the dirt.
Song Siyun said, “Is this really the time to care about fish?”
“Alright, let him finish eating first. We will have things to say later.” Ye Zhou, seeing that Lin Chubai had reached the absolute limit of his speechlessness, picked up another piece of fish and handed it to him.
Hearing Ye Zhou speak, Lin Chubai raised an eyebrow slightly, as if surprised that someone actually knew what he was planning to do.
Song Siyun slowly sank back into his original spot, his heart fluttering in panic and his legs beginning to tremble uncontrollably.
Suddenly, a fair hand entered his field of vision, holding a large piece of fish.
Song Siyun looked over to see Lin Chubai ignoring him entirely. After chewing the fish in his mouth, Lin Chubai spoke slowly: “Some things need to be confessed by the murderer in person.”
He picked up a piece of fish and began eating as well. Although he did not understand what these two riddle-makers were up to, he figured that even if he had to die, he was going to be a well-fed ghost.
By the time the three of them had eaten their fill, the village chief had already led his men right up to the front of the old woman’s house, standing outside and quietly staring at them.
Lin Chubai slowly stood up, casually grabbing a handful of leaves from a nearby bush to wipe the grease off his hands, and met the village chief’s gaze head-on.
The night breeze was always so cool and refreshing, yet inside this dungeon, it truly felt like a piercing chill.
“Why did you trespass into my house?” The village chief asked with a bizarre expression, fixing his gaze on Ye Zhou behind Lin Chubai.
Wait, how did he know someone had been to his house? And how did he know it was Ye Zhou?
“Oh? Then why did you kill him?” Lin Chubai countered without answering, his tone devoid of any doubt, as if he had already concluded that the chief was the killer.
Hearing those words, the village chief’s expression grew even more bizarre, turning increasingly red. In barely half a second, his entire body began to expand and grow larger, his fingernails morphed into sharp claws, and his hair suddenly stood on end, turning into stiff, piercing steel needles.
Following the chief’s mutation, the villagers behind him stepped forward like zombies, gradually surrounding the three of them.
The moonlight was like silver, and specks of white light were sliced in half by the village chief’s razor-sharp claws, shooting straight toward the three like sharp arrows.
Lin Chubai and Ye Zhou had been prepared. They retreated rapidly, instantly dragging the terrified Song Siyun along with them.
However, those claws still left a shallow scratch across Song Siyun’s cheek. Yet, from that seemingly minor scratch, wisps of black blood oozed out continuously.
The village chief did not give them any breathing room. The next fierce claw-wind followed on the heels of the first, while the villagers behind him chanted strange, wondrous incantations, causing blood-stained runes to emerge on the previously calm ground.
Sensing that things were going terribly wrong, Lin Chubai’s vines lashed out, and the soil around them gradually converged into an earthen shield, while a pair of wide, dark wings flickered faintly in the night.
The vines whipped out by Lin Chubai tightly snared the village chief’s neck, but they failed to inflict any damage at all.
Instead, with a powerful struggle from the chief, the vines snapped loudly, and the backlash from the skill projected directly onto Lin Chubai, sending a trace of metallic blood rushing up his throat.
Song Siyun was not having an easy time either. The moment the sharp claws touched the earthen shield, the shield disintegrated instantly, followed by his own cries of pain.
Fortunately, they still had an escape skill named Black Swan.
Back when Song Siyun’s earthen shield had formed, Ye Zhou had already summoned his wings, scooped Lin Chubai up into a bridal carry, and shot upward into the air.
Suddenly picked up princess-style, Lin Chubai instinctively wrapped his arms around Ye Zhou’s neck, while vines shot out from his hands once more, yanking Song Siyun upward so that he hung upside down from Ye Zhou’s leg.
“Ahhhhhhh.” Blood rushed to Song Siyun’s head, and he could not help but scream out in misery.
Ye Zhou charged out of the encirclement at top speed, dodging left and right as countless tiny steel needles showered down from behind them.
After running a certain distance, the three finally broke free from the village chief’s attack range. Lin Chubai leaned in slightly close to Ye Zhou’s ear. “Go to the village chief’s house, the basement.”
“Mm.” The warm breath exhaled from his speech brushed against Ye Zhou’s auricle, staining it with a trace of a blush. The amulet hanging by a red string right in front of his eyes pierced straight into his heart, making his breath hitch involuntarily.
This amulet carried far too many memories for him.
However, now was not the time to dwell on that; they had to deal with the mutated village chief first.
“What time is it?” Lin Chubai frowned slightly and asked again.
“12:05.” Song Siyun, hanging from the leg, did not understand why he was asking this, but answered honestly anyway, before suddenly remembering with a jolt that they seemingly had a rule: no going outside after midnight.
Scanning his surroundings and finding no abnormalities, Lin Chubai said, “There is no abnormality for now. Let us deal with the village chief first.”
Before long, the three arrived at the village chief’s house. They found the front door tightly shut, with three yellow talismans pasted on the rickety wooden door, while the window next to it was sealed shut with wooden boards, also bearing yellow talismans.
Soft groans echoed from the pigpen in the back courtyard, and Lin Chubai stepped forward, intending to walk right in, when a hand blocked his path.
“There is a barrier.” Lin Chubai turned his gaze and saw Song Siyun with his eyes tightly shut, his brows furrowed in a rare display of seriousness.
That made sense. If there was a barrier here, the village chief would naturally know that Ye Zhou had been there.
He pulled out the remaining yellow talismans from his pocket and, after a slight hesitation, began drawing on them again.
Earlier, when fighting the village chief, he had tossed out a few lightning-summoning talismans, but for some reason, those talismans had failed to self-ignite in midair as they usually did, instead withering away and turning into dead wood before falling to the ground.
Would these still work? He pushed the thought aside; there were no other options left.
Looking up at the stone by the door, he reached out and flipped it over, revealing faint traces of bloodstains underneath.
Lin Chubai and Ye Zhou watched Song Siyun’s actions with bated breath as he pasted the newly drawn yellow talisman onto the bloodstains. Within seconds, it burst into self-ignition.
Phew. Thankfully.
“We can go in.” Song Siyun resumed his usual leisurely expression and stepped into the courtyard. “Once we use this, this house will be our turf for the next three hours. If they come back, I will know.”
“Are there any side effects?” The two followed Song Siyun inside, Lin Chubai’s gaze fixed on Song Siyun’s carefree back.
“Who do you take me for? How could there be any?” Song Siyun did not turn around, continuing to walk forward so that his facial expression remained hidden from view.
At a single glance, Lin Chubai knew he was lying, as Song Siyun had turned his body away to dodge that heavy, scrutinizing gaze.
