I'm Not Playing This Vicious Female Supporting Character Anymore! - Chapter 31
This was the most handsome boy Qin Yuzhen had ever seen since entering this world, and he would rank among the top in all the worlds she had experienced.
If she could rate him, she’d give him an “S+”.
Qin Yuzhen opened her Halo to take a look, but he was just a random passerby.
“Hello,” Qin Yuzhen nodded, a small smile appearing on her face because of his good looks.
[System: Hardcore Looks Obsessed.]
“Are you a high school student too?” the boy asked, his voice sounding somewhat strange.
“Mm,” Qin Yuzhen replied, finally noticing he was wearing a school uniform.
He was from Thirteenth High School, City A’s prestigious traditional high school with a first-tier university admission rate of over 99% each year, making it a fierce rival of Ninth Middle School. The two schools usually looked down on each other.
“I’m from Ninth Middle School,” Qin Yuzhen said.
“Hello, my name is Huo Yaoxu, and I’m a senior this year.”
“How old are you?” Qin Yuzhen couldn’t help but ask.
His voice still sounded like he was going through puberty.
“I’m fifteen this year.”
Qin Yuzhen: …
“Tsk, Host, he’s just a kid.”
“I’m not planning to do anything,” Qin Yuzhen retorted irritably.
“My name is Qin Yuzhen, and I’m also a senior.”
The boy paused for a moment before exclaiming, “Ah, I know you! You were first in your school’s recent monthly exam, with perfect scores in math and science. Impressive!”
“You couldn’t get those scores?” Qin Yuzhen asked.
“My English scores are usually perfect too.”
“Oh, then I’ll aim for perfect scores next time too.” Qin Yuzhen tucked her hair behind her ear.
“The mid-term exam is the Six-City Joint Examination. I look forward to competing with you.”
Qin Yuzhen suspected he had recognized her the moment he approached. Tsk, this kid… he’s quite arrogant.
“Sister, can I get your contact information?” Huo Yaoxu flashed a charming smile, but Qin Yuzhen could see the pride in his eyes. The “Sister” address seemed forced.
She clicked her tongue again. “Don’t call me ‘Sister.’ Just use my name.”
She opened her WeChat and let him scan her QR code.
“I think ‘Sister’ is more polite,” Huo Yaoxu said, putting away his phone only after seeing her accept the connection. “I’m number fifteen, almost my turn. Gotta go prepare. Good luck, Sister.”
Qin Yuzhen nodded.
“Hope you pass the preliminary selection, Sister.”
“And I hope to see you in the initial round.” Qin Yuzhen leaned back in her chair, radiating confidence in her preliminary selection success.
Huo Yaoxu fell silent because his name had just been called.
By the time Qin Yuzhen’s turn came, it was already past seven o’clock. She entered the interview room, where five people were seated.
As she walked in, she noticed all five of them bow their heads and write something simultaneously.
“Please introduce yourself.”
“Hello everyone, my name is Qin Yuzhen. I’m seventeen years old and a student at Ninth Middle School. I’m proficient in all the traditional arts—zither, chess, calligraphy, and painting—and skilled in all eighteen martial arts. I possess knowledge of both celestial and terrestrial matters.” Qin Yuzhen’s self-introduction, paired with the confident smile on her face, could only be described as “arrogant.”
Even the System fell silent.
“Miss, despite what you’ve said, your résumé is truly unremarkable,” one of them remarked.
“Ordinary is what makes for good conversation,” Qin Yuzhen countered. “This is ultimately a show, isn’t it? My good looks and camera presence will draw attention, while my ordinary résumé will make people wonder how I got on the show in the first place. Isn’t that instant conversation material?”
“Moreover, my skills won’t disappoint you. You can prepare your ‘slap in the face’ scripts in advance. There’s still a written preliminary selection after the interviews. If I’m not up to par, you can always cut me then.”
The group exchanged glances, then lowered their heads to discuss briefly.
Qin Yuzhen’s appearance was highly appealing to them. The people seated there were producers and directors of variety shows, not scholars. For them, what mattered most was generating buzz, and Qin Yuzhen’s background offered plenty of potential storylines.
“Alright, go home and wait for our notification.”
“Thank you,” Qin Yuzhen nodded, a slight smile playing on her lips.
“Host, are you sure this is wise?” The System felt uneasy.
“Isn’t the point of an interview to showcase your strengths?” Qin Yuzhen smirked. “Producers love contestants who can create buzz. While calm, harmonious competition and answering questions can attract some attention, it’s hard to trend on social media. Besides, adding one more person to the written test won’t hurt anyone.”
“I’m capable and good-looking. They’ll definitely want me.”
Qin Yuzhen left the building, checked her watch—7:45—and grabbed a bowl of noodles to tide over her hunger. At 8:30, she stopped by Rong Xi’s favorite dessert shop and bought two small cakes. By 8:50, she was back at school.
Evening training ended at 9 PM.
When Rong Xi emerged from the classroom, she paused, seeing Qin Yuzhen leaning against the corridor wall.
“Sister, didn’t you leave?” Rong Xi asked, sidling up to her.
Qin Yuzhen handed the bag to Rong Xi. “I went out for a bit,” she said. “You’re quite honest.”
“Of course! Now I remember, this is how I should talk to Sister,” Rong Xi replied. “Wow, thank you, Sister! It’s my favorite, strawberry mousse cake! You’re the best!”
Qin Yuzhen glanced at Rong Xi. “Save it for when you get home.”
“But eating it so late will make me gain weight! I don’t want to gain weight. Ugh, so annoying.”
“Gain weight?” Qin Yuzhen pinched Rong Xi’s arm. “Forget it, just don’t eat it. Give it to me.”
Rong Xi immediately moved the cake out of reach. “Sister, you already gave it to me! How can you take it back now?”
The boy trailing behind them nudged Liang Xuzhou. “Learn from this. You’ll need to talk like that in the future.”
Liang Xuzhou remained expressionless. “What if I actually outscore her?”
“Not entirely impossible.” The boy patted Liang Xuzhou on the shoulder. “Good luck. I have high hopes for you.”
Upon returning home, Rong Xi took out her diary and wrote down the date.
Today, Qin Yuzhen revealed during her speech that she had bet with me. But it doesn’t seem to have caused any major issues. After all, Liang Xuzhou will likely say the same thing after the mid-term exams, and several boys are planning to dress in drag. My comment doesn’t seem so bad in comparison. Besides, I only need to talk to her like this. After all the times I’ve embarrassed her in front of her, she’s probably gotten used to it by now.
Qin Yuzhen… she felt a little strange today. I initially thought she was upset about my comment, but it didn’t quite seem like that. Those suspicious silences… I probably need to toughen up my skin even more.
She mentioned going out today, but I don’t know where she went. Could she have gone with Gu Si? That’s entirely possible. Still, she brought me strawberry mousse, so she must have some conscience left.
Tomorrow is a holiday. Qin Yuzhen slept until 11 a.m., and when she woke up, she saw the notification from the quiz show confirming her interview success. The written test is scheduled for next Saturday at 1 p.m.
She glanced at her WeChat messages again. Huo Yaoxu had sent her a message at around 6 a.m. Thirteenth High School required attendance even on Sundays. Their senior class had already adopted a schedule of studying for four weeks straight, followed by one day off. To be honest, if the Rong family parents had forced her to attend this school, she might have fled on the spot.
Huo Yaoxu: Did Sister pass the interview?
Qin Yuzhen: Yep.
After getting ready, Qin Yuzhen went downstairs. Rong Xi was sitting on the sofa reading a book. He looked up and smiled at her. “Sister, I thought you’d sleep until afternoon.”
“Have you eaten yet?” Qin Yuzhen asked.
“I’m just about to,” Rong Xi replied, closing his book and looking at her. “I was wondering whether to wake you up, but you happened to wake up just in time.”
Qin Yuzhen felt there was something odd about Rong Xi. She went to the kitchen to get a glass of water, but when she came back, she found Rong Xi still smiling at her.
“Act normal,” she said.
“Sister, am I not being normal right now?” Rong Xi asked, looking genuinely puzzled.
Qin Yuzhen drained the entire glass of water. “Let’s eat.”
“Okay.”
Lunch was just the two of them again.
“I heard that guy from the Zhao family is going to apologize to you during the flag-raising ceremony tomorrow,” Rong Xi said.
Qin Yuzhen paused, almost forgetting about him.
“Mm,” Qin Yuzhen nodded. “I almost forgot.”
Zhao Pàohuī recovers quickly, Qin Yuzhen thought to herself.
In truth, Zhao Pàohuī hadn’t fully recovered. But ever since Qin Yuzhen frightened him that day, he’d been plagued by nightmares every night, unable to sleep properly. When he tried to tell others about it, they all dismissed it as nonsense, refusing to believe him.
He figured that if he apologized early, he could put an end to all this.
“Sister, where did you go yesterday?” Rong Xi asked, glancing at Qin Yuzhen.
“Just wandered around. Nothing special,” Qin Yuzhen replied.
Rong Xi pursed her lips. “I thought you might have gone out with Gu Si or that junior.”
“No,” Qin Yuzhen said, giving Rong Xi a meaningful look.
“Who knows?” Rong Xi muttered, crossing her arms.
Qin Yuzhen: ……
“Junior is having a birthday next Sunday and invited me,” Qin Yuzhen said, taking a sip of soup as she glanced at Rong Xi. “Are you coming?”
“Why would I go? She didn’t even invite me,” Rong Xi muttered, poking at her food.
“She said we could bring guests. Aren’t you my guest?” Qin Yuzhen remarked casually.
Rong Xi froze. When young people talk about “bringing guests,” they usually mean boyfriends or girlfriends… not younger sisters.
“That’s not quite right.”
“Why not? Didn’t you two have a great chat last time? If you don’t want to go, that’s fine too.”
“Ah, then I’ll go after all. You’re new here and don’t know anyone. I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to go alone,” Rong Xi said. She had a feeling that if Qin Yuzhen went alone, her phone would end up with eight or ten new WeChat contacts from junior students.
“Okay, then when you’re picking out a gift, get me something too. I have no idea what to get.”
“Sure.” Rong Xi nodded. “Sister, what do you think of the entire set of Five Three workbooks?”
“I’d like to maintain a good relationship with this junior for now. I don’t want to burn bridges just yet,” Qin Yuzhen said.
