I'm Not Playing This Vicious Female Supporting Character Anymore! - Chapter 28
Rong Xi fell silent, knowing when to yield.
“I think I can walk on my own now,” Rong Xi said. “The wound on my leg feels almost healed.”
“Hmm, true. It’s finally healing. At this rate, my arms will start bulking up from carrying you around.” Qin Yuzhen propped her chin in her hand and pinched Rong Xi’s arm. “You don’t look heavy, but you’re surprisingly sturdy.”
Rong Xi: …
Rong Xi quietly shifted away. She wanted to protest that she wasn’t heavy, but remembering that Qin Yuzhen had carried her up three flights of stairs, she held her tongue. If Qin Yuzhen had to carry something as heavy as her, she probably wouldn’t have made it past two or three steps.
Report cards were sent to parents’ phones. When Mother Rong saw Qin Yuzhen’s grades, she was surprised. She had assumed it would be a struggle for Qin Yuzhen to stay in the Honors Class and had already prepared to have her transferred back to the regular class. Who knew she would perform so well? Moreover, Old Wang even called to praise both Qin Yuzhen and Rong Xi, showering Qin Yuzhen with particular praise.
Mother Rong smiled at the grades, sighing inwardly that the Rong family’s feng shui truly never failed.
When Qin Yuzhen returned home, she found Mother Rong watching her with an unusually warm and amiable smile.
“You’re back.”
“Mm,” Qin Yuzhen replied, her brow furrowing slightly. “Did you need something?”
Mother Rong’s smile froze for a moment before she recovered. “You both did well on the exam. Just let me know what you want, and I’ll have someone purchase it for you.”
“I don’t really need anything,” Qin Yuzhen said. “Besides, it was just a minor exam.”
“Then I’ll give you some money instead.” With that, Mother Rong pulled out her phone.
“Alright, thank you.” This time, Qin Yuzhen didn’t refuse. Her thick skin allowed her to accept this reward.
Back in her room, Qin Yuzhen sent the photos of the Honor Roll she had taken during the day to her adoptive parents, the Qin family. Though they hadn’t contacted each other since that phone call, she still felt they were thinking of her.
As expected, they quickly responded with three thumbs-up emojis. Though they didn’t write anything else, the input field continued to show “typing…” for a long time.
After Qin Yuzhen washed her face and returned, they finally replied.
[Qin Parents: Keep up the good work! We’re proud of you, sweetheart!]
[Qin Yuzhen: Mm.]
[Qin Parents: Why haven’t you changed your surname? Did something happen?]
[Qin Yuzhen: I don’t want to.]
[Qin Parents: It’s still better to change your surname…]
[Qin Yuzhen: I like the name “Qin.” Goodnight. I have to wash up now; I just got home from school.]
[Qin Parents: Okay.]
In her room, Rong Xi examined her leg again. It was almost fully healed; the scar was barely visible unless you looked closely. She sent a photo to her doctor, who was surprised by her rapid recovery.
The next day, when going to school, she insisted on climbing the stairs herself. Qin Yuzhen didn’t stop her; no one knew better than him how well she had recovered.
“Finally, I can go back to gym class!” Rong Xi sighed. “Being stuck upstairs alone was so boring.”
“Didn’t I come up to keep you company before?” Qin Yuzhen asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Who said that? You only came back once, and then you went straight to sleep,” Rong Xi retorted irritably.
Qin Yuzhen counted back: Indeed, she had only visited once. The time before that, she had accompanied Gu Si to the library, and the last time, she had gone to play basketball with Cong Mian.
“Wasn’t it because you rejected me? To keep you in a good mood and help your wounds heal properly, I voluntarily kept my distance,” Qin Yuzhen said.
Rong Xi scoffed.
“Have you forgotten something important today?” Qin Yuzhen asked, raising an eyebrow.
Rong Xi: …
Rong Xi bit her lip and remained silent. She decided to cut down on her words; the fewer mistakes she made, the better.
“Sister, why are you ignoring me? Have you grown so tired of me that you won’t even speak to me?” Qin Yuzhen sighed.
Rong Xi glanced at Qin Yuzhen. “The teacher is coming soon.”
“Speak properly,” Qin Yuzhen said with a kindly smile.
Rong Xi took a deep breath. “Sister, the teacher is coming soon. She’ll get angry if she sees us talking.”
Her voice softened, taking on a slightly affected tone, but she wasn’t fully relaxed.
“Little sister, just practice more. You’ll get used to it,” Qin Yuzhen said with an impudent grin. “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”
Rong Xi pulled out her book and slid her chair away from Qin Yuzhen.
Liang Xuzhou couldn’t hear their conversation, but Qin Yuzhen’s smug smile told him she was probably bullying someone again. He mentally lit a candle for Rong Xi.
As soon as morning reading ended, Rong Xi hurried out with her water cup, but Qin Yuzhen quickly followed.
“Little sister, wait for me!”
Rong Xi kept walking, but Qin Yuzhen grabbed her arm.
“Why are you rushing so fast?”
“Sister, I’m really thirsty,” Rong Xi whispered, glancing around nervously, afraid someone would hear her forced tone.
“Don’t worry. As long as you don’t feel awkward, the awkwardness will fall on others.”
“What’s going on?” Gu Si leaned closer, wrapping her arm around Qin Yuzhen’s. “Wow, Rong Xi, your leg is healed!”
“Mm,” Rong Xi replied, her voice reserved.
“Zhenzhen, can you come with me to return the book after gym class this afternoon?” Gu Si swung Qin Yuzhen’s arm playfully.
“No, Sister has to keep me company this afternoon,” Rong Xi said, her voice dripping with sweetness. She didn’t know where this sudden courage was coming from.
Passersby glanced at Rong Xi.
Gu Si froze, her expression nearly cracking.
“Sister, you have to stay with me! You can’t go with her!” Rong Xi mimicked Gu Si’s actions, swinging Qin Yuzhen’s arm and looking her in the eye. Her face flushed crimson with embarrassment.
Qin Yuzhen: …
“Sister, why aren’t you talking? Sister?” Rong Xi mustered the courage to call out again.
“Ah…” Qin Yuzhen nodded. “Sorry, I’ll keep Rong Xi company this afternoon. She hasn’t been to gym class for days.”
“Alright, then I won’t return the book today. You can come with me next time.”
“Okay,” Qin Yuzhen nodded.
Gu Si shot another probing glance at Rong Xi.
Their eyes met.
“Sister, let’s go get water. Gu Si, do you need anything else?”
Gu Si shivered. “No, I just came up to see Zhenzhen.”
“Next time, it’s best not to come up without a reason. Teacher said we shouldn’t wander between classes.” Rong Xi’s voice grew even sweeter as she astutely sensed Gu Si’s unease.
