Chapter 46: Wrong Person, This is Chi Hui…
After a brief break, Chi Hui continued his photoshoot.
During a lull, Lucas found another opportunity to sneak over and find Qi Xu.
Lucas held up his phone: “Give me your contact info.”
Qi Xu had changed his phone number once in the interim, and his previous number was no longer reachable. Qi Xu didn’t refuse.
“Minou, why are you with Chi Hui?” Lucas asked curiously, contentedly changing Qi Xu’s contact nickname on his phone.
“The reason is a bit complicated, but you have to pretend you don’t know me in front of him,” Qi Xu didn’t go into detail, only giving a brief instruction.
Lucas was puzzled: “Why? Are you two close? But he’s not a good person.”
This was the second time he had emphasized that Chi Hui wasn’t a good person.
Thinking back to Chi Hui’s explanation earlier, Qi Xu scratched his cheek: “I asked him for you just now. It was a misunderstanding. He didn’t understand what you were saying at the time; he didn’t ignore you on purpose.”
Lucas shook his head. He scanned the surroundings, glanced at Chi Hui, and said hesitantly: “No, it’s not just that. There are some bad rumors about him. I heard that in his early days, he engaged in ‘unspoken rules’ (casting couch) with his assistant.”
Qi Xu froze, looking up at the man before him with a stern expression: “Lucas, you shouldn’t say things like that lightly.”
Lucas scratched the hair at the back of his head, messing up his styled look—it was clear he was conflicted as well.
“It’s not my words. A member of the idol group he was in back then said it personally. He said Chi Hui did something bad to the assistant they had at the time. Later, the company executives suppressed the story, but Chi Hui’s group disbanded before they even properly debuted because of it. That’s why that member terminated his contract and jumped to Fenghua. After that incident, Chi Hui gave up music and transitioned into modeling.”
Lucas usually hated people who gossiped behind others’ backs. He had overheard these things in passing and hadn’t cared much, but thinking that Qi Xu might be being deceived, he felt he had to tell him what he knew.
Qi Xu pursed his lips and remained silent.
These events Lucas mentioned were not in the system’s records. As soon as he had stepped out of the restroom earlier, he had taken a moment to ask the system.
However, the system could only retrieve data with clear records. Information that was intentionally covered up remained unknown, so it didn’t know specifically what had happened to Chi Hui at the company.
After several seconds of silence, Qi Xu turned toward Chi Hui. His gaze fell directly on the man who was striking poses for the photographer. He spoke in a serious tone: “He wouldn’t.”
Chi Hui wasn’t that kind of person.
Qi Xu’s stance didn’t waver because of the scandal. Lucas realized he might have overstepped: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to badmouth him on purpose. I’m just afraid you’ll be tricked. If you’re close with him, just pretend I never said anything.”
“Thank you.” Qi Xu looked sideways at the awkward Lucas, hesitated for a moment, and asked: “Can you do me a favor?”
Lucas barely thought about it: “Name it.”
“Can you keep looking into what happened with Chi Hui back then for me?” Since he couldn’t rely on the system, Qi Xu had to investigate himself.
Although investigating someone privately wasn’t great, Qi Xu had an intuition that this was the key to why Chi Hui gave up music.
Lucas nodded hesitantly: “I’ll try. But when you’re free, you have to come out and play with me.”
The two talked for a while until Chi Hui’s session ended. The rest of the shoot would take place in the afternoon.
Qi Xu tucked away his heavy expression and smiled at Lucas, his eyes crinkling: “Okay.”
Lucas was dazed by the smile. By the time he snapped out of it, Qi Xu was already walking toward Chi Hui.
Chi Hui pulled on his jacket, glancing at Lucas: “What did he want this time?”
Qi Xu chose a safe excuse: “He said he wanted to get to know me.”
However, he didn’t notice that these words made Chi Hui frown, and the look he gave Lucas became wary.
Lunch was a set meal Xu Changshu had ordered in advance. Qi Xu went to pick it up. On the way back, he ran into Lucas again.
“Minou!” Seeing him alone, Lucas enthusiastically approached.
But just as he was about to throw an arm around Qi Xu’s shoulder from behind, the collar of his shirt suddenly tightened.
“Cough.” Lucas let out a choked cough.
Qi Xu turned around to see Chi Hui appearing behind them out of nowhere. He was gripping the hood of Lucas’s sweatshirt, preventing him from rushing toward Qi Xu.
Lucas clearly felt offended and glared angrily at Chi Hui.
Seeing that Lucas was about to start cursing, Qi Xu quickly stepped in front of Chi Hui and pulled his hand away.
“Why did you come out?” Qi Xu asked Chi Hui, while giving Lucas a look to calm him down.
“To wash my hands,” Chi Hui replied flatly, though his gaze remained fixed on Lucas.
“Ah, I’ve got lunch. Let’s go back and eat,” Qi Xu tried to brush past the incident.
Chi Hui’s gaze didn’t shift; he continued to stare down the defiant Lucas: “You go back first. I need to make a phone call.”
Qi Xu instinctively glanced at Lucas, biting his lip: “Alright then.”
Carrying the lunch boxes, he gave Lucas another look before leaving, gesturing for him to leave quickly as well.
“Minou…” Lucas wanted to have lunch with Qi Xu and felt a bit unwilling to see him go.
But remembering his promise to Qi Xu, he could only watch his back as he left.
“Minou?” Chi Hui asked, puzzled by the nickname Lucas used for Qi Xu.
“Yeah. Don’t you think he looks a lot like a kitten?” Lucas replied in a good mood, staring intently at the receding figure of Qi Xu with eyes full of fondness and admiration.
“…” Chi Hui looked at Qi Xu, then at the brown-haired foreigner beside him. He couldn’t help but scowl and let out a soft “Tsk.”
Once Qi Xu was out of sight, Lucas withdrew his gaze. For the sake of “Minou,” he decided not to pick a fight with this rude man for the time being.
Back in the lounge, Chi Hui saw Qi Xu huddled in the corner of the sofa playing with his phone.
Worried, Qi Xu was about to send a message to Lucas when he saw Chi Hui return. He immediately put away his phone and stood up.
“You’re back! Let’s eat.” He approached with a smile.
Chi Hui stared at the heartless-looking person smiling so brightly and said coldly out of the blue: “Don’t get too close to that Lucas.”
“Why?”
Qi Xu thought he was still bothered by what happened in the restroom and tried to explain for Lucas: “Actually, he doesn’t have any ill will toward you.”
“I do,” Chi Hui said without hesitation, frowning.
“What?” Chi Hui spoke too fast, and Qi Xu didn’t hear clearly.
Chi Hui stared at the bewildered person, his lip line pulled straight. After a moment, he looked away and said nothing more.
During the meal, Chi Hui couldn’t help but secretly observe the person sitting opposite him. He saw Qi Xu patiently picking out the vegetables he didn’t like.
He was as picky as a pampered cat.
Sensing the gaze on him, Qi Xu looked up. Although he was confused, he still gave a pleasing smile.
His clear black eyes reflected the light, sparkling—also like a clever cat.
“Don’t you think he looks a lot like a kitten?” Lucas’s words echoed in his ears again.
Chi Hui immediately scowled, his expression displeased.
Qi Xu didn’t know why he had suddenly become unhappy again, so he lowered his head and tried to minimize his presence.
Watching the person eating with his head down, Chi Hui glanced at the food Qi Xu had picked out. Narrow-mindedly, he picked up a piece of carrot from his own lunch box and placed it in front of him: “Don’t be a picky eater.”
Qi Xu stared at the food and looked up blankly, but Chi Hui had his eyes lowered and wasn’t looking at him.
Qi Xu gave a small “Oh” and obediently put the carrot into his mouth.
Even though he didn’t like the taste of carrots, the protagonist had personally served it to him.
Chi Hui stole an unnoticeable glance. Seeing him obediently eat his food, his mood inexplicably brightened.
After a short noon break, the afternoon shoot was about to begin.
Before heading out, Chi Hui took a new face mask out of his pocket and handed it to Qi Xu.
“Why are you giving me a mask?” Qi Xu took it, feeling a bit strange.
“Wear it. To avoid catching anything ‘weird’.” Chi Hui didn’t look at him, but his tone was chilly.
Qi Xu blinked, suspecting that the “weird thing” he was referring to was Lucas. But he obediently put it on anyway.
Just as they reached the door of the makeup room, they ran into the three others who were also preparing for their shoot.
One was Lucas, one was the minor celebrity who had gossiped about Chi Hui in the morning, and the third was someone Qi Xu didn’t recognize.
The minor celebrity had completely changed his attitude from the morning, proactively greeting the other three. Especially toward Chi Hui, he wore a fawning smile.
Qi Xu couldn’t help but look a few more times. The celebrity’s double eyelids were very deep, his nose bridge was unnaturally high, and the skin on his face was pulled so tight that he could barely maintain a normal expression. No wonder Lucas called him a “plastic surgery freak.”
While lost in thought, Lucas waved at him with a beaming face and whispered: “Minou.”
Chi Hui glanced at him and said to Qi Xu: “Go buy me a bottle of water.”
Qi Xu blinked and nodded in agreement.
Seeing him leave, Lucas cheekily raised his hand: “I want one too.”
Chi Hui shot him another look, but Lucas’s attention was entirely on Qi Xu, so he didn’t notice certain someone’s extremely displeased gaze.
The others went into the makeup room while Qi Xu turned back to buy water. Consequently, when Qi Xu returned with two bottles of water, a problem arose.
He couldn’t distinguish the people sitting in the makeup room.
Lucas had finished his makeup and was about to leave. Seeing Qi Xu, he happily took the water from his hand.
But there were still three people left inside.
Qi Xu discreetly approached the person closest to him. After staring at the side of their face for a long time, he was sure it was the “plastic surgery” celebrity.
Skipping him, Qi Xu walked between the second and third persons.
The person on the left had his eyes closed, waiting for the makeup artist to set his look. The person on the right was looking down at his phone.
Both had superior features, so Qi Xu hesitated.
His gaze drifted back and forth between the two. Suddenly, he noticed that the person on the left had a gold highlight in his hair.
Qi Xu turned to look at the person on the right.
Yep, black hair.
“Here’s your water,” Qi Xu confidently handed the water to the person on the right.
The person looked up, froze for a moment at Qi Xu’s face, and took it a beat late.
“Thanks.”
“Qi Xu.”
Two voices rang out simultaneously from the left and right. Qi Xu froze on the spot.
He turned in surprise toward the person on the left, only to see him frowning, a heavy, sharp gaze falling upon him.
—He got the wrong person. The one with the highlights was the real Chi Hui.
The person who took the water didn’t know the situation. He stood up to head to the shoot and thanked Chi Hui again as he passed by.
“I didn’t expect to get one too. Thanks, Xiao Chi.” He thought Chi Hui had asked his assistant to bring water for everyone.
The minor celebrity heard the commotion and peeked over. He also thought Chi Hui had arranged for the assistant to prepare water for everyone, but he waited until he finished his makeup and was ready to leave, yet Qi Xu never came to give him water.
As he walked out, he gave Chi Hui an unnoticeable glare and cursed in a voice only he could hear: “Fuck, you’re trying to disgust me on purpose, aren’t you?”
When everyone had left, only Chi Hui and Qi Xu remained in the makeup room.
“I told you to go buy water,” Chi Hui said coldly, staring at the person standing awkwardly beside him.
“Mmh,” Qi Xu pursed his lips and gave a low response.
Chi Hui looked at Qi Xu’s empty hands: “You came back from buying it, but there’s none for me.”
“Mmh…” Qi Xu clasped his hands in front of him, twisting them awkwardly.
He hadn’t expected the makeup artist to dye Chi Hui’s hair in such a short amount of time.
“Why did you dye your hair…” Qi Xu muttered softly.
Chi Hui glanced at the mirror: “It’s temporary hair spray.”
Qi Xu blinked, realizing: “Oh.”
Chi Hui stared at Qi Xu without saying a word. After waiting for a while without a further explanation, he let out a laugh of pure exasperation: “Is it ugly? Because I dyed my hair and you don’t like it, you didn’t give me any water?”
Qi Xu picked at his fingertips and gave a weak denial: “No…”
He wasn’t convincing enough. Chi Hui narrowed his eyes and said crossly: “Tsk. Remember to go find the managers of those two people at the end of the month.”
“For what?” Qi Xu was puzzled.
“To ask for two more salaries. Otherwise, you’re working for them for free.”
Qi Xu: “…”
