- Chapter 6 - A Little Progress, The Scumbag Reveals His Tail
“Brother, the photo you Photoshopped last time was quite good. Your skills are high,” Ji Yan said, not forgetting to flatter his older brother.
Ji Han was having dinner with Ge Jiarui. She handed him her drink and said, “I have not touched this, so you can have it. How can you choke yourself while just eating a meal?”
“Thank you, Senior. You eat first, I need to make a call,” Ji Han said as he put down his chopsticks. He walked to the side and dialed his younger brother’s number.
“What are you doing? It was fine to do one photo, but now you want me to edit over a dozen? Do you think your brother is some kind of app specialized in repackaging you?”
It made no difference whether he walked away or not; every word reached Ge Jiarui’s ears, causing her to shake her head.
“Also, what do you need so many Photoshopped photos for? Tell me the truth, or I will not help you at all.”
“They are useful,” Ji Yan replied. “First, I am not committing a crime, and second, I am not disturbing public order.”
“I still will not do it,” the older brother said, refusing out of concern.
“Brother, do you remember the day of the big spring cleaning?” Ji Yan’s voice was calm as he began his narration. “That day, you had a sudden whim and mobilized the whole family to clean. If you had not done that, Dad would not have helped me wipe my guitar. If Dad had not helped me wipe it, my guitar would not have fallen. If my guitar had not fallen,”
Ji Han felt as if he were being stared at by a ghost from a dark corner and shouted, “I will do it!”
“Thank you, Brother. I want the same quality as last time.”
Ji Han felt like he was about to cough up blood. He returned to his seat. As he sat down, Ge Jiarui stood up and said, “It seems I do not need to watch you play basketball today. I am leaving now.”
“Wait,” Ji Han called out, but she had already walked away.
He had originally invited a few people to the gym to play basketball so he could show off in front of her. Now, he had to go back to the dormitory to Photoshop photos for his brother. “That brat, I hope he is not doing something improper.”
It was nearly ten o’clock when Zhuo Yu’ang returned. He opened the door to find Ji Han standing straight at the entrance with a defeated expression.
Zhuo Yu’ang raised an eyebrow and asked, “Are you possessed?”
“I am waiting for you.”
Practice had proven that for Photoshopping, knowing how to use the software was secondary to having a sense of aesthetics. Ji Han had spent two hours helping his brother, but his work was rejected three times with his brother claiming the edits looked like ghosts.
Zhuo Yu’ang looked at the photos and commented, “Twelve photos and not a single one looks the same. That is quite an achievement.”
“My friend, can you help me again?”
Zhuo Yu’ang was amused by the absurdity. If everything went as expected, these photos would travel in a circle and end up being sent back to him anyway.
Ji Han ruffled his messy hair with a troubled face and said, “I have no choice. He is my only younger brother. Friend, I will take you to play tennis in a few days and buy you dinner. It will be the full treatment.”
Considering it was Ji Han’s brother, Zhuo Yu’ang agreed, “Fine, send them to me.”
“Great! I will send them directly to your email!”
Zhuo Yu’ang finished the photos before taking a shower. However, he did not edit all twelve; he only selected five of them.
At 11:50 PM, Ji Yan received the message from his brother. He zoomed in on every photo, searching for any flaws. He was only satisfied when he could see no trace of editing with the naked eye.
Ji: “Thanks, Brother.”
Ji Han: “I am not good at this, so I asked my roommate for help.”
Ji: “I thought so. Your skills usually have the temperament of a menopausal woman, changing all the time.”
Ji Han: “I will definitely deal with you when I get home!”
Ji: “Help me thank your roommate.”
Ji Han: “Okay.”
Ji Yan saved all five photos to his album. He chose one with a shopping mall background and sent it to Zhuo Yu’ang.
Ji: “Gege, this is a selfie from my shopping trip today. Does it look good?”
Zhuo Yu’ang was still in the shower. The water flowed down his sharp features, over his defined abdominal muscles, and down his strong legs.
There was a knock on the bathroom door. “Lao Zhuo, my brother asked me to thank you.”
Zhuo Yu’ang wiped the water from his face and asked, “Did you tell your brother that I was the one who processed the photos?”
“Yes, I just said my roommate helped.”
Last time there was only one photo, so Ji Han did not bother explaining. This time there were many, and he felt it was wrong to take all the credit.
Zhuo Yu’ang gave a lazy response with a slight smile, “Tell your brother he is welcome.”
“What? Thank my brother for what?”
There was no sound from the bathroom except for the splashing of water. Ji Han said, “I am going to sleep then. These photos made my head ache.”
“Good night,” the voice from inside replied.
Shortly after, Zhuo Yu’ang came out of the bathroom. His phone screen was lit; the younger brother had sent more photos. Since the first “street snap” received no reply, a second one followed. In the photo, the girl held a cup of milk tea against her face. If one did not know it was a boy, they would think the girl looked even sweeter than the tea.
Ji Yan looked for a topic of conversation.
Ji: “Gege, I discovered a very good milk tea shop today!”
Ji: “Did you see their cups? They are so cute and pink. Do you like them, Gege? If you do, I will bring you some next time.”
Zhuo Yu’ang sat on his bed to play along.
Zhuo: “I like it. When will you bring it to me?”
The other side went silent. The longer the silence lasted, the more amused Zhuo Yu’ang became.
Ji Yan was currently searching the internet for what it meant if a male college student liked “pink and cute” milk tea, but he found no answers. The mention of the tea was just a spontaneous comment to match the photo.
Ji: “It is not in Nanhua City!”
Ji: “I am not staying at school. It is a newly opened shop in my hometown.”
Ji: “I will bring it to you when I return to school.”
Zhuo: “Okay.”
Ji: “Sending love!”
Ji Yan’s eyes were filled with irony. If the scumbag took the bait quickly, he would dump him before university even started.
Ji: “Gege, what are your plans for the summer?”
Zhuo: “Do you not care about me? Do you not know I am staying at school?”
Ji: “Oh, I accidentally forgot. I am sorry, Gege!”
Ji Yan waited for a moment, but there was no reply. He then sent a third photo. It was a half body shot with the deep blue sea as a background. The girl wore a straw hat and held the brim as the sea breeze lifted her long black hair. She blended perfectly with the scenery. Ji Yan felt this photo had the best artistic mood.
Ji: “Gege, this is a photo from my trip last summer. Is it beautiful? I really want to go to the beach again this year.”
It was already past midnight. Ji Yan put down his phone and went to the kitchen to find something to eat. There were no snacks, but there were plenty of vegetables and some ham. He chopped the ham, cracked an egg, and made fried rice with leftovers.
Halfway through cooking, a figure appeared silently behind him, drawn by the scent. “Son, your dad is hungry too.”
“When will you pay me back for my guitar?”
When he turned back, his father had already disappeared. Ji Yan took his fragrant fried rice back to his room. He ate with his right hand and checked his phone with his left. The scumbag had still not replied. He decided to send the last two photos.
It was not that Zhuo Yu’ang was ignoring him on purpose; he had received a late night phone call. The president of the University Youth Association, Liu Yan, asked him to help with a charity event plan because the original person was hospitalized. Since he was a member, he agreed to help.
Ji Yan kept waiting. It was now 12:40 AM. He wondered if his photos were not attractive enough or if the scumbag was playing hard to get. After finishing his rice, he sent a sticker and asked, “Gege, are you asleep?”
Then he had another idea.
Ji: “Gege, I want to make a photo wall in my bedroom, but I cannot decide which photos to use. Can I send them to you so you can help me choose?”
Zhuo Yu’ang finished his call and saw this message. His temples throbbed. He knew exactly how many photos Ji Yan had in drag. Including the first one, there were only six in total. This meant he wanted him to Photoshop more!
At 12:43 AM, Ji Yan finally received a long reply.
Zhuo: “I am not asleep yet; I just finished a call. Be good and do not send more photos for now. I promise I will reply to every one of your messages from now on.”
Replying to messages was much easier than Photoshopping. Ji Yan sneered. The scumbag had finally revealed his tail.
