- Chapter 11 - Striking While the Iron is Hot
“Gege, do you want me to pant more?”
Ji Yan stood before the mirror, pretending the reflection was the scumbag. With a cold face, he spat out three words: “You total pervert.”
His messages, however, painted the picture of a completely different person.
Ji: [I definitely will not break my word. I only like Gege!]
Confessions of love had to be constant. If you said them enough, the other person would eventually believe them. Ji Yan sent another voice message: “Gege, can I be your girlfriend now?”
He remembered a saying: “Between a man chasing a woman lies a mountain; between a woman chasing a man lies a veil.” Right now, he was the girl, and since the other party had clearly been stirred up, a little more persistence should bring him to the brink of success.
Zhuo: [No.]
Ji Yan was stunned. His expression turned dark as a soot-covered pot. He thought, “So I panted for nothing?”
To say Zhuo Yu’ang was not moved would be a lie. The younger brother’s gift had warmed his heart, and a certain sense of possessiveness had taken root. However, once the physiological impulse faded, his reason returned. The younger brother was so interesting that he wanted to tease him a bit longer.
Ji: [Why?]
Zhuo: [I am not satisfied yet.]
Ji: [Wiping tears emoji]
Ji: [Then what will make Gege satisfied?]
Zhuo: [Gege has not thought of it yet.]
This was the truth.
Zhuo: [All right, Gege is going to rest. Goodnight, little cat.]
Ji: [Don’t go!]
No amount of acting cute worked; Zhuo Yu’ang did not reply again.
The next morning, when the six o’clock alarm rang, Ji Yan resumed his greetings: [Good morning, Gege.]
He had never been this diligent even with his own biological brother.
Zhuo: [Morning.]
His attitude was the same as usual. Ji Yan looked at the message through bleary eyes, then glanced at the sunlight peeking through the curtains. It was daytime. The wicked scumbag from last night had reverted to a dignified hypocrite, acting as if nothing had happened.
“What a poser,” Ji Yan thought. He closed his eyes and typed: [What does Gege plan to do today?]
He waited until after a thirty-minute nap to check the reply.
Zhuo: [Morning run every morning, then back to the dorm to shower, then breakfast, and then to the library. In the afternoon, I will be at the lab until about five o’clock. Tonight, I am going to a club downtown with my roommates to play tennis.]
Ji Yan’s interpretation was that Zhuo Yu’ang wakes up early to pick up girls. First, he has a morning run with a girl from school, then breakfast, then a different girl at the library. In the afternoon, there was likely a “flower” to coax in the lab, followed by someone from another school in the evening.
“Busy guy,” Ji Yan muttered. While brushing his teeth, he replied: [Gege, you wrote so many words today!]
Mentioning it made Zhuo Yu’ang realize it too. He had actually reported his itinerary to the younger brother, and in such detail.
Zhuo: [Just consider Gege in a good mood today.]
Ji: [Is it because I panted for Gege last night?]
Zhuo: [Mm.]
One was shameless, and the other was thick-skinned.
Ji: [Gege, do you want to hear it again today? Yesterday was not very convenient at home. Tonight, I can find a quiet place outside and pant for a long, long time!]
Zhuo Yu’ang did not know whether to be angry or laugh.
Zhuo: [Not allowed. If it is inconvenient, wait until it is convenient later. You are not allowed to go outside to do those things.]
Ji: [Fine. Sigh.]
Zhuo: [You seem disappointed that you cannot pant for Gege?]
Ji: [Of course!]
Zhuo: [No shame?]
Ji Yan was going all out: [As long as Gege likes it, I can do anything!]
A thought flashed through Zhuo Yu’ang’s mind, so fast that he could not even catch it. Ji Yan searched online for a pair of women’s white sneakers, took a photo of the screen, and sent it: [Gege, I am heading out too.]
Zhuo: [Where are you going so early?]
Ji: [To my part-time job.]
Zhuo: [Does your family not give you an allowance?]
Zhuo Yu’ang instinctively tapped the red packet icon and typed in five thousand yuan. He hesitated and then canceled it, shaking his head with a laugh. He must have teased the younger brother so much that his own brain was malfunctioning. In what capacity could he give him such a large red packet? He was neither the boyfriend nor the biological brother.
He changed the amount to fifty yuan and sent it.
Zhuo: [A small red packet. Gege is treating you to milk tea.]
Ji Yan had given him a gift before, so it was only fair to reciprocate. He accepted it.
Ji: [Thank you, Gege! My family gives me an allowance, but I want to save up to buy a guitar. Mine is broken, and I had to use the one at the shop last time.]
Zhuo: [Understood. Do not work too hard.]
Ji: [I will not. It is very easy.]
Zhuo: [Because the shop has no business?]
Ji: [Why are you being so brutally honest?]
Zhuo Yu’ang’s deep laughter echoed in the morning hallway. Someone passing by greeted him and asked if he was in love. Seeing the Campus Heartthrob laughing at his phone was a rare sight indeed.
“No, stop talking nonsense,” Zhuo Yu’ang scolded playfully.
Ji Yan arrived at the coffee shop at eight. After several days of operation, the nearby stores and offices all knew about the newly opened “Old Times Coffee Shop.” Morning orders began to increase.
After the morning rush, Ji Yan started pestering Zhuo Yu’ang again. He chatted about daily life, asking if he was still at the library or the lab. Zhuo Yu’ang answered every question. When the shop was busy, Ji Yan could not message. When a reply took over half an hour, Zhuo Yu’ang knew he was occupied.
Zhuo: [If you are busy, do not message me. Just focus on your work.]
Ji: [I do not want to! I just miss Gege and want to message you!]
Ji: [Hmph!]
Acting cute had become second nature to him. If Zhuo Yu’ang did not reply, he would nag. Even when Guo Jia messaged saying he was coming over instead of practicing driving, Ji Yan habitually added a tilde to his reply. It gave Guo Jia goosebumps.
Ji: [Gege, what kind of project are you researching?]
Zhuo: [We are working on Visual Perception and Decision Optimization for Intelligent Vehicles in Complex Road Conditions.]
Ji Yan understood it, yet did not, but that was not important.
Ji: [That sounds very impressive. But Gege, I think I just saw you leaving the school gate with someone else!]
Zhuo Yu’ang could tell this was a deliberate test. Ji Yan’s test was to see if Zhuo Yu’ang was lying and to gauge his sincerity.
Zhuo: [I am really in the lab.]
Ji: [I want Gege to prove it. Make a peace sign on the keyboard!]
Zhuo: [All right.]
Ji Yan received a photo almost instantly. It was so fast that there was no time to find a fake image online, so he concluded that Zhuo Yu’ang was telling the truth. This made Ji Yan even more clingy. He called him “Gege” until Zhuo Yu’ang finished dinner and went to the club to play tennis.
However, Zhuo Yu’ang played tennis half-heartedly, checking his phone every few minutes for a message. Tonight, the group included Ji Han, Ge Jiarui, Zhang Shuo, Li Feng, and the basketball team captain, Xie Junwei. Xie Junwei had brought along Lin Chenyu, a freshman.
Throughout the night, Lin Chenyu had been observing Zhuo Yu’ang. He had been tracking him since his first day at Nanhuai and had never seen him check his phone so frequently. Lin Chenyu’s face looked pale.
“Senior,” he approached Zhuo Yu’ang. “Shall we play a set?”
Zhuo Yu’ang nodded casually. “Sure.”
However, only a few balls into the game, Lin Chenyu twisted his ankle and fell. The group gathered around him. It seemed serious, and he needed to go to the hospital. Lin Chenyu specifically requested that Zhuo Yu’ang take him.
