- Chapter 41 - Resilience and Exhaustion
Mu Mingyue had not yet fully mastered “Reverse Mental Bloodburn” before facing the intensive training sessions. The result was inevitable: her mental power state was insufficient to support the rigorous drills.
With Yu Zhouyao’s assistance over the past two months, Mu Mingyue had managed to pilot a mecha for three hours at full capacity. However, the ten-hour daily requirement of the intensive training camp was far too heavy a burden. Every so often, she was forced to stop and rest for a long duration.
Professor Colin quickly noticed Mu Mingyue’s situation.
One day, while the two were practicing strafing maneuvers, Mu Mingyue’s mecha suddenly slid from the sky.
Yu Zhouyao immediately followed with an emergency landing. “Eldest Miss! Mu Mingyue, are you okay?”
Inside the cockpit, Mu Mingyue was deathly pale, gasping for air.
She’s in bad shape, Yu Zhouyao thought grimly.
Professor Colin rushed to the scene. The moment she opened the cockpit and saw that ghost-white face, her brow furrowed. “Student Mu Mingyue…”
Yu Zhouyao tore open a packet and handed a nutrient solution to her. “Drink this first, recover some energy.”
Mu Mingyue leaned against the armrest with one hand, taking small sips of the solution.
Colin’s worry deepened. Mu Mingyue’s expression brought to mind countless types of pilot accidents. Once Mu Mingyue’s breathing stabilized, the professor asked, “I’ve reviewed your files… Has your Pheromone Disorder relapsed?”
Yu Zhouyao shook her head. “Professor, we’re standing right here. We’re so close, yet there’s no scent of pheromones. This isn’t the disorder.”
Colin sighed. “Then how…”
Mu Mingyue braced herself against the console to climb out. Yu Zhouyao immediately supported her, guiding her to the rest area.
“Professor Colin, Zhouyao, thank you for your concern,” Mu Mingyue said softly. “I fell just now because my mental power hit its critical limit. My body was screaming at me to rest. May I take a break for a while?”
Yu Zhouyao understood the underlying hint. She wondered gloomily: When will the Eldest Miss’s mental condition truly see improvement?
Colin asked, “How long has this been going on?”
“The mental power issue? For… about ten years now,” Mu Mingyue opened another packet of nutrients. “The instability has always been there. It has only slightly improved in the last two or three months.”
“In the last few months?” Colin pressed.
“Yes. I… found a way to slightly increase my control over my own mental power.”
“Was that why you were grinding the virtual battlefield at the end of the term?”
Mu Mingyue nodded. “Yes, Professor.”
Colin turned to Yu Zhouyao. “As her teammate, how do you view her situation?”
Yu Zhouyao rested her chin in her hands. “Well, Professor, the Eldest Miss can handle high-intensity training in short bursts without a problem. The virtual battlefield records show we only went ‘tower climbing’ at night for that very reason.”
Colin rubbed her temples. “I apologize; I was negligent. Mu Mingyue, I will discuss your situation with the coaching staff. You two take a rest for now.”
“Thank you.”
Mu Mingyue sat with her hands clasped over her knees. Yu Zhouyao sat down beside her. “You’ve worked hard, Eldest Miss.”
“I’m alright. Did I scare Professor Colin?”
“A little?”
Mu Mingyue laughed. “I’m surprised the coaching staff was so in the dark about our conditions.”
“Well, everyone’s just winging it to some degree,” Yu Zhouyao looked at her. “How are you feeling now?”
“Fine. But as you know, I have to rest periodically.”
Mu Mingyue blinked mischievously. “I’m just curious to see the coaching staff’s reaction when they realize they have two ‘patients’ as official team members.”
Yu Zhouyao laughed, giving her a light nudge on the shoulder. “You aren’t a patient. Who said that? This is just ‘periodic adjustment.'”
Perhaps because the issue was serious, Professor Colin didn’t return for a long time. By the time Mu Mingyue had recovered and re-entered her mecha, a large group had swarmed into the training room.
He Qionghua and Hua Nai waved energetically. Other teachers from the coaching staff had arrived as well.
“Mingyue! Zhouyao!” Captain He greeted them.
“Captain, Vice-Captain,” Mu Mingyue nodded as she jumped down from the cockpit.
He Qionghua smiled. “Professor Colin told us about your situation. She practically burst through our door and gave us a fright!”
Hua Nai skipped over and patted Mu Mingyue’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, Mingyue! You’ve just started mental power training; it’s normal to get exhausted. Just rest more.”
“Thanks, Nana.”
Colin added, “The coaching staff has a preliminary understanding now. We will customize a training plan based on your physical condition. Don’t feel too pressured.”
Based on her health, Colin split Mu Mingyue’s schedule into three segments: three hours of training followed by an hour of rest. For the first few days, Mu Mingyue still had to stop occasionally, but as her mental resilience grew and her body adapted, she finally managed to complete the full daily routine.
In contrast, Yu Zhouyao’s training was demonic. Since Zhai Shiming had whispered in Colin’s ear, Yu Zhouyao’s workload surged. She had to train for ten hours straight without stopping.
Every day, Yu Zhouyao would end up slumped in her cockpit, her pilot suit drenched. When she emerged, steam practically rose from her head.
“Zhouyao, did you go to a sauna?” Mu Mingyue teased.
Yu Zhouyao’s hair was matted with sweat. “I wish. Instead, I went to the mecha training room that costs your life but is free of charge.”
Twenty-five days later.
Both of them had grown noticeably thinner under the brutal regime.
Professor Colin checked her list. “Basic attacks: strafing, volley fire, multi-stage attacks… basically done. Basic flight and defensive maneuvers for training mecha are finished too. You two have officially completed the technical makeup sessions.”
Yu Zhouyao cheered. “WE! ARE! FREE!”
Mu Mingyue’s eyes curved into crescents, equally happy.
Colin tapped Yu Zhouyao on the head. “You’ve only just learned the techniques. You still need to build proficiency.”
“I know, I know, Professor! I practice hard every day.”
“Mr. Zhai told me to keep a close eye on you,” Colin said, crossing her arms. “He also said your Engineering practice can’t fall behind. You need to visit him when you’re free.”
“What? The term is over!”
“I think he wants you to keep learning ahead.”
Yu Zhouyao pouted but stopped complaining.
“To solidify your foundation,” Colin continued, “the veterans will take you into the virtual competition for practice. If you have piloting questions, ask me.”
“Got it! Thanks, Professor!” Yu Zhouyao pushed Mu Mingyue toward the lounge.
Sanshui wasn’t there, and the long sofa was empty. Yu Zhouyao flopped back onto it with her arms spread wide. Mu Mingyue grabbed a pillow and leaned back too. They were both exhausted. Within minutes, Yu Zhouyao’s eyes closed, and she fell fast asleep.
Mu Mingyue stared out the window, listening to Zhouyao’s breathing steady. The girl was sprawled out like a tired puppy.
Mu Mingyue smiled silently. She pulled a blanket from a cabinet and draped it gently over Yu Zhouyao. “Good afternoon.” Then, she relaxed and fell asleep herself.
By the time Mu Mingyue woke up, it was evening. She saw two people talking in front of the sofa. She reached out toward the spot next to her Yu Zhouyao was already gone. She felt the blanket on her.
Yu Zhouyao heard her move and turned around. “Eldest Miss, you’re awake?”
“Yes.”
He Qionghua waved at her. “You two have really worked hard these past few days.”
Yu Zhouyao handed Mu Mingyue a glass of water. The cool liquid refreshed her parched throat.
“Thank you,” Mu Mingyue whispered.
“No problem. And thanks for the blanket.”
After a quick meal in the lounge, He Qionghua made a suggestion. “I’ll take you into the virtual competition for a spin. Want to get a feel for it?”
Both girls nodded in unison.
