I Won Over My Best Friend’s Idol - Chapter 8
Kong Yinmeng thought she’d drop right off to sleep once the lights went out, but her brain refused to shut down. Tiring of one position, she rolled over to face Zheng Yi.
Then, deciding that facing him was way too awkward, she flipped onto her back. But she hated sleeping on her back—it always made her feel like she couldn’t breathe. So, she flipped right back to where she started.
After tossing and turning for what felt like ages, she ended up exactly how she began. She didn’t even know how to describe her own restlessness.
Just then, the man beside her shifted, seemingly rustling closer to her side. She quickly spoke up to prove she was wide awake, warning him not to get any ideas.
“What do you think you’re doing, Zheng Yi? A real man keeps his word. If you dare lay a finger on me, watch me expose you to the world!” She felt her body go so rigid that if she tensed up any further, she might actually snap.
Zheng Yi hadn’t expected such a sharp reaction. He let out a helpless chuckle. “You rolled yourself up in almost the entire blanket. I’m just following the covers.”
Sure enough, during her frantic tossing, she had hoarded most of the blanket. Short of physically wrestling it back from her, he had no choice but to shimmy closer to stay warm.
Kong Yinmeng was profoundly grateful the lights were off so he couldn’t see the sheer embarrassment on her face. She hurriedly yanked the excess blanket back toward his side. In the pitch black, her hand accidentally brushed against his bare skin. It felt like an electric shock, and she recoiled instantly.
The night was dead silent, the kind of quiet where every tiny sound magnified. Zheng Yi distinctly heard her swallow hard, her breathing turning shallow and fast.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out what that meant. And here he thought she genuinely felt nothing for him—turns out they just hadn’t spent enough close contact yet.
“My phone’s dead. Mind if I borrow your power bank?” His hand grazed her shoulder in the dark as he fumbled around the nightstand.
Once, twice, three times… His touch sent her thoughts spinning into utter chaos. This man is toxic! she thought. It’s just a power bank, why is he taking a whole eternity?
Reaching out, she accurately grabbed the device and blindly flung it backward. Zheng Yi couldn’t help but laugh at her sheer impatience.
Hearing him laugh, Kong Yinmeng finally sensed something was off. Replaying the last few minutes in her head, the feeling that she was being played grew stronger…so strong that sleep suddenly felt secondary.
“Are you doing this on purpose? Look, I admit you’re handsome and you’ve got a great body, otherwise I wouldn’t have been foolish enough to let you stay.” She really had been momentarily blinded by temptation.
“I was just testing your resolve,” he teased. “So far, you’re doing alright. Even though you’re clearly drooling over my body, you haven’t actually made a move.”
The moment the words left his mouth, a warm hand slapped right against his chest.
“Oh, you want a move?! I’ll show you a move!” She had taken him in out of the goodness of her heart, and here he was, testing her boundaries over and over. If that was how he wanted it, then she might as well…
Zheng Yi froze in sheer shock for a few seconds. But before he could process it, her hand vanished just as quickly. From the darkness beside him came her huffy voice.
“There. I made a move. Satisfied? Now go to sleep! Aren’t you tired?!”
The darkness definitely brought out the devil in her. For a split second, she really had wanted to cross the line. Luckily, her sanity prevailed. If anything actually happened tonight, her peaceful days would be over.
Thinking about his rabid fanbase and the paparazzi made her shudder. She hated the idea of being hounded day and night, losing every ounce of freedom just so her business could be broadcast to the world.
She forced herself to shut her eyes. Normally, she’d scroll through her phone before bed, and skipping that final step made her feel like something was missing, but none of that mattered right now.
Around three in the morning, Zheng Yi suddenly felt a suffocating pressure, like he was experiencing a textbook case of sleep paralysis. Gasping awake from his dream, he realized someone had crossed the line. And by crossed the line, he meant completely obliterated it.
She was entirely draped over him, using him as a human body pillow. Her arm was slung tightly across his neck, which explained why he was losing air.
He found it a little unbelievable. Anyone working in showbiz suffered from insomnia to some degree. Between the high pressure and the constant flying, changing environments always threw off your sleep schedule.
Normally, it took him at least a day or two to adjust to a strange bed. Yet tonight, he had slept so deeply that he only woke up because she was practically suffocating him.
Zheng Yi gently shifted her arms and legs off him, moving carefully so he wouldn’t wake her. If she woke up now, the awkwardness would be off the charts. Naturally, moving her meant his hands brushed against her soft skin.
He wasn’t a deeply lustful man; most of his energy went into training, practicing vocals, dancing, and recently, studying acting. Becoming a multi-talented entertainer was the industry trend, and if he didn’t keep up, he’d be left behind.
His next career step would likely involve acting. Most scripts involved romance, and given his looks, he was bound to do idol dramas, yet his actual love life was a total blank slate.
This was his first time being this physically close to a woman. Thinking about it now, if he didn’t already have feelings for her, he would never have done a series of things so wildly out of character.
Just as he was deep in existential thought, Kong Yinmeng’s arms and legs tangled right back over him. This time, he didn’t push her away. Instead, he gently guided her hand down from his throat and placed it over his chest. At least this way, he wouldn’t suffocate.
The hotel’s blackout curtains were incredibly effective; even in broad daylight, keeping them drawn made the room feel like midnight. Neither of them had set an alarm. When Kong Yinmeng finally drifted awake and opened her eyes, she was greeted by a flawless face just inches from her own.
First thing in the morning… this was a bit too stimulating. She nearly shrieked out loud. As the memories of last night flooded back, her mouth fell open in a silent gasp.
She usually slept alone and had no idea she was such a chaotic sleeper. Now that there was another person in her bed, she had to face reality.
Judging by the position of the bedside lamp, she was the one who had migrated across the mattress. And it wasn’t just a minor drift; she had practically pinned Zheng Yi to the edge of the bed.
Kong Yinmeng carefully lifted his hand off her waist, then slowly slid her head off his arm. Once she successfully retreated to the safe zone, she slipped out of bed like a stealthy cat and darted into the bathroom.
The moment she closed the door, Zheng Yi opened his eyes, completely alert. He had actually been awake for a while, but he hadn’t dared to move, mostly because he wanted to see how she would react.
Kong Yinmeng stayed inside for ages. When she finally emerged, her makeup was flawlessly done, though she hadn’t changed yet. Her clothes from yesterday were washed, and her fresh outfit was still tucked away in her suitcase.
“Ah! You’re awake? You didn’t make a sound, you scared the life out of me!” She thought he was still asleep and had planned to grab her clothes and change back in the bathroom. Instead, she found him sitting calmly on the bed, looking a little intimidating.
Zheng Yi lifted his arm experimentally. “My arm is completely numb. Did you do something to me last night?”
“No! Absolutely not! You’re probably just exhausted, it’ll pass in a bit.” She would rather die than admit she had used his arm as a pillow. The fact that they had spent the night under the same covers purely sleeping was something no one would believe anyway.
Zheng Yi smiled knowingly but said nothing, his eyes locked onto her guilty face as he stepped out of bed. As he neared her, he suddenly tilted his head down. Her instinct was to avert her gaze, but at the last second, she held her ground.
If she looked away, wouldn’t that be an admission of guilt?
“Are you sure you don’t know anything?” He had been intensely studying acting lately, which included analyzing micro-expressions. Although she didn’t look away, she had nervously pursed her lips twice, and her rigid posture screamed tension.
Kong Yinmeng reached out to push him away, but to her dismay, he didn’t budge. Instead, he caught her hands and pinned them against the wall.
“I… I really don’t know! What’s the difference between you right now and a total creep? If your fans saw you like this, they’d mass-unfollow you instantly! It’s almost noon, you need to leave!”
A playful smirk played on Zheng Yi’s lips as he leaned in closer. She could practically hear the steady thrum of his heartbeat and the rhythm of his breath. She knew she should push him away, but for some reason, her body felt entirely drained of strength.
As his face magnified in her vision, she swallowed hard without realizing it. Their noses brushed. The next step would be…
“I happen to be studying a script for a rogue character. Tell me, do I look the part?” Zheng Yi slammed the brakes at the absolute last second, smoothly releasing her hands and granting her freedom.
The moment she was released, a strange wave of disappointment washed over her. She quickly crushed the bizarre feeling. “You don’t look like a rogue. You looked like a total creep. Go put some clothes on, I need to change too.”
From the moment they woke up until now, they were still wearing what they slept in—him in barely anything, and her in a sexy nightgown. One wrong move and things could easily ignite.
Zheng Yi headed into the bathroom with a grin. Kong Yinmeng had just finished changing when the doorbell rang. Who would be ringing the bell this early? Could a sasaeng (obsessive fan) have tracked them down? Thoroughly spooked, she crept to the door and looked through the peephole.
Zheng Yi walked out of the bathroom and reached for the handle. She immediately blocked him. “What are you doing? If it’s a fan or a paparazzi, we will never be able to clear our names!”
“It’s just the food delivery I ordered when I got up. You open it then, just in case I get recognized.” He turned toward the table, ready to clear some space for breakfast.
Kong Yinmeng let out a sigh of relief. Peering through the peephole again, she saw the delivery person holding food containers. She cracked the door open just wide enough to say a quick thank you and took the bags inside.
“You eat this much first thing in the morning?” She set the containers on the table, unpacking them one by one: a box of pizza, a cup of milk tea, a bag of fried chicken cutlets, a burger, and a single bowl of millet porridge.
Zheng Yi slid the millet porridge toward himself and pulled out a chair. “Only the porridge is mine. The rest is for you. Consider it a thank-you token for taking me in last night and keeping me off the streets.”
“Oh, stop exaggerating. With your status, how could you ever end up on the streets? There are probably countless people who’d love to kidnap you and take you home.” She didn’t stand on ceremony, pulling up a chair to dig in.
Zheng Yi took a spoonful of porridge and casually replied, “Why would anyone take me home? Aside from being good-looking, I don’t know how to do anything.”
Kong Yinmeng glanced at him, throwing out a casual line. “Take you home to ravish you…”
“Cough… Cough-cough!”
Clearly, putting clothes back on gave her a lot of bold confidence. He really should have waited for her to finish speaking before taking a sip of his porridge. Now he was choking.
