Chapter 9: She Knows How to Act Coquettishly.
“It’s fine, even if they see us…” Si Nanyu’s words trailed off halfway as she suddenly realized Wen Qingyan’s expression looked wrong. She quickly shut her mouth.
Her eyes darted around nervously, not daring to look at Wen Qingyan, eventually settling on the stone pavement beneath them.
Wen Qingyan’s face was indeed looking a bit dark, mostly because she was remembering something Si Nanyu had once said to her.
In school, it’s better not to let people know about our relationship.
At the time, Wen Qingyan didn’t understand it at all. Si Nanyu had simply offered a light, dismissive explanation: “You used to be my teacher. If people knew our current relationship, what would they think of you?”
It sounded considerate, as if she were looking out for her.
But Wen Qingyan just felt it was wrong. Completely wrong.
In their romance, Si Nanyu had always been flamboyant and overbearing, never one to shy away from anything. She was the one to take the initiative, the one to treat Wen Qingyan like her personal property…
Forget it.
Si Nanyu hadn’t been that way for a long time, especially this “amnesiac” version.
The things Wen Qingyan wanted to say, Si Nanyu wouldn’t understand or remember. It was futile. All of it was futile.
Wen Qingyan felt a bit lost, wondering what exactly she was holding onto…
“Teacher Wen, is it this car?”
Unlike the heavy thoughts from before, a slightly cheerful voice snapped her out of it. She turned to see Si Nanyu looking at a new energy vehicle with a face full of curiosity.
Wen Qingyan felt helpless, yet she couldn’t help the slight curve of her lips.
She immediately pressed them into a firm line, feeling annoyed—annoyed that she still instinctively wanted to smile when facing this version of Si Nanyu.
Only she knew of her own embarrassment. So, pretending to be composed, she took out her phone to check the license plate and said calmly, “It’s this one. Get in.”
“Okay!!” Si Nanyu was beyond impatient, reaching for the passenger door handle. However, Wen Qingyan spoke up from behind her: “Si Nanyu, sit in the back.”
“It’s safer…” Wen Qingyan’s voice grew quieter toward the end of the sentence. She didn’t even look at Si Nanyu as she stepped into the back seat first.
Si Nanyu didn’t seem to notice the nuance. Delighted by the invitation, she obediently followed her and sat in the back.
Wen Qingyan was quiet in the car, closing her eyes to rest. Si Nanyu, however, didn’t stay still; she looked left and right at everything with wide-eyed wonder.
It wasn’t until they got out of the car that Wen Qingyan couldn’t help but comment on her behavior: “You don’t need to be so amazed. You have one too.”
“Eh? Really~?” Si Nanyu looked back at Wen Qingyan with a grin. Wen Qingyan… did not grin back.
She gripped her bag and walked straight into the 4S dealership.
Once inside, they found a salesperson and waited to process the paperwork.
Si Nanyu had bought the car, but when she had filled out the contact info, she had also left Wen Qingyan’s number. It wasn’t just Si Nanyu who had received a call; the salesperson had called Wen Qingyan this morning to finalize the time.
Wen Qingyan sat quietly while Si Nanyu waited with excitement for over half an hour before the car was finally brought out.
Avocado green. It was truly beautiful, and the model looked rugged and tough.
Wen Qingyan felt nothing for it. She gave it a neutral look and told Si Nanyu to take it for a test drive.
Si Nanyu instinctively took a step forward, but as she reached the door, she started backing up…
She retreated all the way to Wen Qingyan’s side and whispered two things.
“Teacher Wen, this car doesn’t seem to be an electric vehicle?”
“And… I don’t know how to drive!”
Si Nanyu had only just turned eighteen; she hadn’t had time to get a driver’s license yet. So, in her mind, she couldn’t drive!
The salesperson was waiting nearby. Seeing that neither of them was moving, she was about to speak up when she saw the cold-faced woman let out a dry chuckle and open the driver’s door…
Both Wen Qingyan and Si Nanyu had a certain “sparkle” in their eyes when they looked at the car, but the salesperson, seeing the two of them standing together, felt her heart fill with pink bubbles.
The cold, abstinent older woman and the lively, bright younger woman!
As she watched Wen Qingyan’s movements, the salesperson screamed internally: I picked the wrong side! The older one is the top!!!
Especially after she placed her hand on the steering wheel, Wen Qingyan raised an eyebrow and commanded: “Get in!”
Si Nanyu hopped in obediently. The salesperson followed.
She sat in the back seat, secretly shipping this real-life couple.
For a moment, she forgot her job. After driving a full loop, Wen Qingyan asked, “Can we drive it away now?”
The salesperson replied with a smile: “Just remember to place the temporary plates correctly. You’re good to go!”
Wen Qingyan was the one who drove them out, with Si Nanyu in the passenger seat.
The salesperson watched them leave, mesmerized, completely unaware that Wen Qingyan’s expression inside the car had turned sour to the extreme.
This car was not easy to drive.
She wasn’t used to it at all. A surge of frustration boiled over, and she asked sharply, “Why couldn’t you have told me before you bought this car?”
“If I had known…” she would have stopped her.
Wen Qingyan didn’t finish the sentence because Si Nanyu looked terrified, clutching her seatbelt tight.
Si Nanyu looked at her expectantly for a long while before saying tentatively, “Although I don’t know much about what’s happened, I remember you, Teacher Wen… you like road trips.”
Actually, Si Nanyu herself was only lukewarm about road trips, but she had always thought that if she could go on one with Wen Qingyan, it would be wonderful.
Ten years of missing memories meant she didn’t know many things—including the fact that the car she was currently sitting in was completely outside her realm of knowledge.
But she figured if she was the one who chose this car, it couldn’t be unrelated to Wen Qingyan.
Her sincere, burning gaze and words stung Wen Qingyan slightly. She reined in her emotions, and her mood became complicated.
She even remembered six months ago when Si Nanyu had excitedly asked her: “Wife, don’t you think this car is cool? The performance should be…”
“I’m busy.”
Wen Qingyan had truly been busy then, organizing groups for the final exams.
That memory made Wen Qingyan feel uneasy as well. After a period of silence on the road, she finally spoke: “I don’t like road trips anymore.”
She didn’t give Si Nanyu a chance to respond, asking immediately: “What do you want for dinner?”
Food was the most important thing, and the person who understood Si Nanyu best was still Wen Qingyan. Whether eighteen or twenty-eight, Si Nanyu lived to eat.
Since the cafeteria chef was away and there were no spare ribs, Wen Qingyan guessed Si Nanyu must be craving them.
True to her prediction, Si Nanyu said excitedly: “I want sweet and sour spare ribs!”
“And braised pork!”
“Or maybe deep-fried pork tenderloin!”
Si Nanyu’s list was getting out of hand. Wen Qingyan called a halt: “No, you can only pick one meat dish.”
“Then the sweet and sour spare ribs.”
Si Nanyu’s obsession with spare ribs had never changed. Compared to those, braised pork and tenderloin didn’t stand a chance.
They went to the supermarket nearest to their home. Si Nanyu pushed the cart while Wen Qingyan picked the ingredients.
It wasn’t for any other reason than the fact that Si Nanyu always ended up buying random junk.
Si Nanyu was indeed being well-behaved now, not tossing everything into the cart, but Wen Qingyan had overlooked one reality: Si Nanyu was “eighteen.”
She knew how to act coquettishly.
“Teacher Wen… I also want to eat eggplant with minced pork, please?”
“That dish… that doesn’t count as a ‘meat’ dish, right?”
Wen Qingyan felt her hem being tugged from behind. Si Nanyu was looking at her with a pitiful, pleading face and those clear, direct eyes.
She had to swallow the words “it’s too oily.”
She couldn’t help but give in: “Fine.”
“Just these two dishes.”
