Chapter 15: She Won’t Come to Coax Her Anymore
Si Nanyu’s mood took a sharp nosedive. It took less than two minutes to transition from shy unease to sheer panic all because of Wen Qingyan’s expression and that specific WeChat message.
Ten years ago, WeChat had just emerged. Although Si Nanyu had registered an account, she didn’t use it often and wasn’t in the habit of checking it constantly. If it weren’t for staying in touch with Wen Qingyan, she might not have opened it for days.
Consequently, she had a mountain of unread messages.
Her body stiffened as she scrambled to find the truth. There were many unread chats, but most were trivial nonsense except for the one Wen Qingyan had seen.
‘Tomorrow,’ ‘want to hang out,’ ‘book a room…’
The message, loaded with these keywords, came from—Shao Ling.
Si Nanyu exhaled in relief internally. She looked up, wanting to show the phone to Wen Qingyan to explain, but Wen Qingyan had already turned around and was walking out of the office.
Gritting her teeth, Si Nanyu followed her.
They had agreed to go home together. Wen Qingyan waited for Si Nanyu in the parking lot, only starting the car once she arrived. Her face was as cold as frost as she said softly, “Get in.”
Si Nanyu couldn’t gauge her current mood, but she was certain it wasn’t good.
She got into the car tremulously and fastened her seatbelt. As they drove out of the parking lot, she spoke hesitantly: “That WeChat message just now… it was Shao Ling.”
“I checked the history; she was likely looking for me to play a game…”
“Teacher Wen, you… you should still remember her, right?”
“…I remember,” Wen Qingyan replied after a pause, her expression visibly softening.
However, she quickly shifted the topic, asking Si Nanyu: “Are you still playing with her?”
“I, I, I… what… what’s wrong with her?”
Si Nanyu asked with genuine confusion. Wen Qingyan froze for a moment, then let out a soft, dry laugh: “I forgot. You have ‘amnesia.'”
Wen Qingyan emphasized the word “amnesia” heavily.
Si Nanyu couldn’t help but sit up straight, her back pressed firmly against the seat. The small sense of relief she felt from Wen Qingyan’s improved mood vanished instantly.
She stared at the tiny mole near Wen Qingyan’s eye, partially hidden by her glasses frame. Her breath hitched, and it took a long time for her to manage: “Teacher Wen, I’m sorry.”
I’m sorry, again.
Wen Qingyan looked a bit impatient. She tapped her fingers against the steering wheel and let out a small “Hmph” through her nose.
The car was filled with silence after that.
Si Nanyu didn’t know how long the drive was; she just kept her head down while Wen Qingyan focused on driving. About fifteen minutes later, the car stopped. Wen Qingyan reached into the back seat to grab something, and Si Nanyu reacted instantly, reaching out as well.
“Let me do it—”
Then came a sharp pain in her forehead. She frowned, realizing she had lunged right toward Wen Qingyan’s direction…
Actually, she knew that Wen Qingyan’s head was quite delicate. Back when she used to ask Wen Qingyan questions, there were several times she had accidentally bumped into her when looking up. Wen Qingyan would always say it was fine, but Si Nanyu would often see her eyes well up with tears.
This time was no exception. Wen Qingyan was clutching her forehead, her eyes red.
But there was a difference…
In the depths of her eyes, there was a flash of pure grievance.
Even though it lasted only a second, Si Nanyu caught it. Already feeling guilty for remembering nothing, Si Nanyu now felt like a major criminal. Usually, she was a smooth talker when playing around, but in front of Wen Qingyan, she was completely tongue-tied. Racking her brain, she only managed to say: “Can I blow on it to make it better?”
The moment the words left her mouth, she almost bit her tongue. She subconsciously pinched her own thigh, trying to regain her sanity.
To her surprise, Wen Qingyan gave a slight nod. The look of grievance resurfaced as she whispered softly, “Mm…”
A mix of nervousness and excitement surged through Si Nanyu. She puckered her lips and slowly leaned toward Wen Qingyan.
For some reason, she even closed her eyes—and then promptly crashed straight into Wen Qingyan’s glasses frame. She snapped her eyes open, and the tiny mole at the corner of Wen Qingyan’s eye seemed to strike her right in the heart.
Her heart felt like a rabbit, leaping frantically.
“Teacher Wen, I’m sorry!”
At a total loss, Si Nanyu reflexively apologized, only to realize she had stepped on a landmine again.
She watched as Wen Qingyan withdrew her grievance, wrapping herself in ice once more. She leaned back, took off her glasses, and said expressionless, “No need. Just take the things from the back seat.”
“I…” Si Nanyu wanted to say something, but didn’t know what to say.
In the end, she could only dejectedly grab the gift bags and get out of the car. Wen Qingyan took two of the bags from her and walked ahead without a word. Si Nanyu followed closely behind her.
In the elevator, they were forced to stand face-to-face, but Wen Qingyan still wouldn’t look at her, her brow furrowed and her lip bitten.
Si Nanyu knew Wen Qingyan must still be in pain. Her own head had always been “hard” since she was a kid, while Wen Qingyan was sensitive to pain…
“Xiao Wen, Nanyu, you’re back so soon?”
The elevator doors opened at some point, and Qin Hua poked her head out wearing an apron, asking with a look of surprise.
She took the bags from Wen Qingyan’s hand and said, “Why bring things home? Honestly!”
“And even if you do, it shouldn’t be you carrying them. It should be Si Nanyu!” She laughed and handed the items to Si Nanyu. As Si Nanyu took them, she saw Qin Hua’s gaze lock onto Wen Qingyan’s face. She gasped exaggeratedly: “Xiao Wen, what happened to your forehead?”
Wen Qingyan didn’t say a word, but her gaze uncontrollably flickered toward Si Nanyu.
Alarm bells went off in Si Nanyu’s head. She stepped between them and said to Qin Hua with a nervous smile: “Mom… I was clumsy just now…”
“You! What can you actually do? Not only do you make people worry every day, but you’re always causing injuries!”
The speaker meant no harm, but the listener took it to heart. Si Nanyu’s smile froze as she looked at Wen Qingyan.
Wen Qingyan had already walked a few steps ahead. She looked at Si Nanyu and Qin Hua with an air of indifference. Even hearing Qin Hua’s voice didn’t trigger much emotion, but when Si Nanyu looked over, she saw a brief flicker of resentment pass through her eyes.
Then, she spoke up to de-escalate: “Mom, we were just grabbing things and bumped into each other by accident.”
“Accident, accident… Si Nanyu is ‘accidental’ every single day…”
Ever since she found out Si Nanyu had bumped into Wen Qingyan, Qin Hua’s mouth hadn’t stopped moving. She rushed to get the first-aid kit and told Si Nanyu to apply medicine to Wen Qingyan.
As she handed the kit over, she nudged Si Nanyu’s arm hard and whispered, “Behave yourself. Stop making your wife angry!”
At the end of the day, Qin Hua still sided with Si Nanyu. She was good to Wen Qingyan because she felt for her; that extra affection she showed—even exceeding what she showed Si Nanyu—was her way of making up for her daughter’s shortcomings. She was frustrated that Si Nanyu had married such a wonderful wife but didn’t know how to treasure her.
“Go on!” Before returning to the kitchen, Qin Hua patted Si Nanyu’s backside, telling her to be proactive.
But Si Nanyu… the more she was forced, the less she cooperated.
She already felt sorry. Even if it wasn’t intentional, she had indeed hurt Wen Qingyan. Apologizing was only right. But Qin Hua’s attitude made it feel like she had committed some unpardonable sin.
She felt defiant, a small temper flaring up.
I don’t remember anything, so why do I have to… endure all this?
Not far away, Wen Qingyan was watching her. She hadn’t heard the full conversation between Qin Hua and her daughter, but after all these years, she could guess most of it.
She also knew that Si Nanyu was becoming moody.
Wen Qingyan lowered her head. Without her glasses, she felt exposed and uncomfortable. Her hands clenched and unclenched repeatedly.
The flicker of expectation in her heart died out completely.
She knew that, for the time being, Si Nanyu wouldn’t come over to coax her anymore.
