- Chapter 2.6 - The Prince is the Pursuer
“Speaking of which, are we heading toward the Empire?”
Changing the subject, Emilia looked at Iris. She pushed in the extended table and instead tapped on the instruments. Something like a thin map appeared floating in the air.
“Eh, yes. Is there somewhere you’d like to stop?”
“Please stop by my place and your family home.”
Emilia was stared at intently by Iris, who had furrowed her brows. Letting out a small sigh, Emilia allowed a smile to touch her lips.
“That face says ‘why?’ doesn’t it?”
“Um, yes.”
“What do you think will happen to Prince Sieg from now on?”
When Emilia broached the subject, Iris looked bewildered.
“Eh? From what I heard earlier… what should I say? But he had his engagement broken off due to a misunderstanding with Lady Emilia and was publicly accused of misconduct. Could he be disinherited or…”
“His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen didn’t seem inclined to do anything, right? He’s still free. And the fact that he’s sent pursuers after us means my prediction was correct. I’ve been urging the servants to make contact quickly, but ideally, I’d like to get there first by car and warn them.”
“Prediction? Warning?”
“Yes.”
Emilia let out her worries with a sigh. It was true that Sieg was “a small man who steals others’ achievements.” But that was also proof that “he had many followers who wouldn’t complain even when he stole from them.” Including the former Emilia, there were surely many who sided with him.
That would be a significant power for a royal family member responsible for governance.
“Especially your home, where there’s only one family of subjects. If things continue like this, they could be summoned and even executed.”
“What!? Would he go that far!?”
“If he does, he’ll naturally face consequences. But isn’t expecting him to stop being overly optimistic? If he’s still targeting you, he’d go that far and if he intends to retaliate, he’ll probably do something to my family home too.”
Originally, Emilia had thought that if she lost the bet and had her engagement broken off… she’d have no choice but to accept her life’s downfall. It would cause significant damage to her family home, and things wouldn’t end peacefully.
Thanks to Iris, she had somewhat recovered, but that was only to the extent that hope had appeared. The fact that she had lost things remained unchanged. To study in the Empire, she first needed to “safely reach the Empire.” That naturally included her family’s safety.
(But still I can’t accept this. Why do I have to be chased around? That kind of…)
Emilia let out a deep breath. It didn’t feel refreshing; a “muddled” feeling had accumulated. It was true that dumping Sieg had somewhat soothed her resentment, but ever since hearing what the King and Queen said something deep in her chest felt sickening.
(His Majesty, Her Majesty, and me… why doesn’t he love me? Then why does he try to keep me by his side? When I was within reach, he trampled on my heart, and now he chases after me?)
Trying to suppress her discomfort, Emilia placed a hand on her chest. Beneath that hand, she gripped the brooch adorned with the “Dragonbird’s Tear” that Sieg had given her. Her gaze fell upon the other brooch that Iris wore. The decoration colors were different. That one was mainly blue seeming to form a pair with Emilia’s red one.
It was proof of the prince’s betrayal. At the same time, proof of her new bond with Iris.
(He’s causing such chaos and even though there’s a reason, he’s being let off. Even though he’s lazy and malicious, he’s being allowed.)
The desire to tear off the brooch.
And the feeling of never wanting to let it go.
Overlapped.
(————————I’m jealous.)
“…Are you all right? Lady Emilia. Your complexion…”
“No, I’m fine. We’ve shaken off the pursuers for now, and we’ll get ahead of them.”
Relaxing her cheeks, Emilia turned her face toward the driver’s seat. Then she heard a small sound, saw something strange, and froze. Her lips trembled and she screamed.
“What is, what is this!?”
“What’s wrong, Lady Emilia!”
Iris panicked and looked where Emilia was pointing. There.
“It’s just a horse, isn’t it!”
A horse was running alongside the car.
Emilia trembled, weakly shaking her head.
“It’s (·) just (·) a (·) horse (·)!”
Taking Emilia’s warning, Iris gasped and looked around. Emilia also looked beyond the passenger-side window and glanced behind.
“We have to find the rider! The rider!”
At that moment.
A nasty scrape sound echoed.
Followed by a heavy thud.
Both coming from above.
Timidly, when she turned to look toward the driver’s seat——
(Gasp!)
A silver-glinting blade had appeared between her and Iris.
Thrust down from the ceiling, it slowly slid toward the rear of the vehicle. The car’s armor was torn apart as if it were paper, and looking through the gap, something was peering in.
‘The rider is right here. Now come, Emilia, let’s go home.’
A low voice showered down.
Along with the blue gaze visible through the gap.
(Prince Sieg!? He really really came!)
Emilia pressed her back against the door and held her breath.
