I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 49
When Bai Feifei went up, she was so cautious she could have been a thief with a rag over her face. She remembered that Huo Wu was meeting with a few screenwriters to discuss business. Although she didn’t know much about it, she knew that group chats like this could go on for hours with no progress, and the topic could easily get sidetracked. Even though she and Huo Wu had gotten close recently and many people said she was riding Huo Wu’s coattails, they were both very careful not to be caught. Also, for the sake of their careers, this relationship had to be kept a secret.
She tiptoed down the corridor for a long time, seeing no one. Guiltily, Bai Feifei moved a potted plant out of the way and quietly approached Huo Wu’s room. Like a kitten’s paw with its pads, she tentatively tapped on the door. Crouching, she whispered with a breathy voice, “A-Wu—” Before the last syllable faded, the door opened from the inside.
The lead screenwriter who opened the door was talking as he stepped out. The last word of his sentence suddenly became a shriek, and he fell face-first, taking a big tumble. Bai Feifei, right in his path, was crushed underneath him. The hand she had on the doorknob lost its grip. After a moment of dizziness, she awkwardly waved to the other screenwriters at the door, who were watching like a crowd of uncles and aunties at a market. “Good evening, um, what a coincidence. Have you all… eaten…”
Everyone came back to their senses and scrambled to help the two of them, who had fallen in a heap. The carpet in the hallway was quite thick, so there wasn’t much noise when they fell, but Bai Feifei’s greeting was clearly heard by Huo Wu, who was pouring tea inside. Huo Wu’s eyebrow arched just a little, a subtle expression that her friend Ji Meng knew meant she was intrigued. Ji Meng followed her to the door.
In just a few steps, everyone outside was already chattering. The screenwriting team for this show had more women than men. The only man stood awkwardly and nervously in a corner, wringing his hands, pitifully trying to fix his glasses, not knowing what to do.
Seeing the commotion, Huo Wu didn’t push forward. Being half a head taller than most, she peered through the gap and saw Bai Feifei sitting on the floor like a child, her legs stretched out in front of her. As the crowd automatically parted, Huo Wu naturally walked to Bai Feifei’s side. Without even realizing it, her expression changed from serene to a gentle smile. “What happened here?”
“Oh, it’s nothing. Feifei was knocking on the door,” explained Li Yan, laughing and shaking her head. “One person opened the door, and the other was knocking. They crashed into each other.” The fallen screenwriter was clutching her nose in pain. The entire top floor was carpeted, but since she hit her nose, even the thickest carpet was of no use. She waved her hands a few times and said with a thick nasal voice, “I’m fine. I just need a moment… Is Feifei okay? Did my knee hit your forehead just now…”
Even though they had both been helped up, they both slid back down as if they had planned it. So when Huo Wu arrived, it looked like she was seeing two little thieves surrounded by police. One was clutching her face, the other her head, creating a very strange scene.
Huo Wu looked down closely and saw a perfect round red mark on Bai Feifei’s forehead. It was a little funny but also had a strange, indescribable kind of cuteness. She very lightly touched the red mark with the pad of her thumb. It was a little hotter than her fingertip. Huo Wu took Bai Feifei’s hand and pulled her up, then naturally let go. She addressed the crowd, “Alright, everyone, you can go now.”
Before long, everyone had left. Ji Meng lingered for a bit and then also slipped away. Bai Feifei couldn’t see the state of her forehead. She went into the bathroom with a scrunched-up face. That knee strike hadn’t been light. She had been helped up, but she was so dizzy she couldn’t stand straight and slid back down. She patted her face with cold water, shook her head, and without wiping her face, she stood in front of Huo Wu, the red mark on her forehead now looking even redder from the cold water. She said pleadingly, “A-Wu, where’s the food? Where’s the food? I’m so hungry.”
As Bai Feifei spoke, the water droplets on her face slid down her cheek and dripped straight into her collar. Her only reaction was to pinch her collar and rub it dry, completely unaware of the suggestiveness of the gesture. Huo Wu only glanced at it and quickly looked away. She used her index finger to hook a precarious water droplet from Bai Feifei’s chin. She rubbed her thumb and index finger together, and the small droplet was quickly absorbed by her skin. Huo Wu said, “It’s already on its way.”
As if to prove Huo Wu right, the doorbell rang. The weather was hot, but Bai Feifei was happy, and her appetite was great. There were three vegetable dishes and one meat dish, served with coarse-grain rice. She wasn’t sure which dish had vinegar in it, but it smelled so fragrant and appetizing.
They ate and talked, and the food disappeared quickly. Bai Feifei’s eating style was similar to Fu Xiaoxiao’s. She didn’t look like a proper young lady at all. She liked to take big bites, chew until her mouth was full, but every bite was eaten with great satisfaction. Compared to her, Huo Wu ate much more slowly. Huo Wu’s chopsticks held a piece of green vegetable stalk. She stared at it for a moment, then moved her gaze to Bai Feifei’s cheeks, which were puffed out from chewing. “Is your schedule all set for tomorrow?”
“Mmm.” Bai Feifei swallowed her food, contentedly shaking her head. Her voice sounded much happier and more energetic. “It’s all set. Tomorrow I have a scene with Li Ran. His scenes are more concentrated, so the director wants to shoot them quickly.” This arrangement made sense. Huo Wu nodded. “I won’t be here. You have to take good care of yourself.”
Bai Feifei looked up in confusion. Hearing such a sudden remark, she didn’t know how to respond. After a moment, she slowly said, “…Huh?” Huo Wu unhurriedly picked up a new green vegetable stalk, placed it on her rice, folded the rice over the vegetable, and only then did she say, “I’m leaving the team tomorrow to temporarily attend a charity banquet.” After that, she finally brought the mouthful of food to her mouth and ate it slowly. Huo Wu’s movements in the past two years had always been very gentle and slow, but there was a different kind of elegant casualness to them. Bai Feifei also loved watching, feeling that Huo Wu looked like a painting even when she was eating, yet it didn’t seem pretentious at all.
Bai Feifei felt relieved. She shoveled a chopstick full of beef into her mouth and ate it with the rice. She was so satisfied that she unconsciously swayed her body and head. She said clearly, “You’ll be back soon, won’t you? And I still have Xiaoxiao with me.” Huo Wu’s right eyebrow arched slightly. Bai Feifei didn’t notice her micro-expression. She happily reached for the beef again, dipping it in the chili flakes on the side.
Huo Wu wasn’t very good with spicy food, and her daily meals were mostly light. She saw that Bai Feifei’s lips were much redder than usual and handed her a cup of milk. Bai Feifei drank it down in a few gulps without even looking, licking the milk foam from her upper lip. Her lips looked very moisturized. Then, she let out a hearty sigh and patted her bulging stomach. “I’m full!” Huo Wu rested her chin on her hand. She heard what Bai Feifei said but didn’t believe it, watching with a calm expression as Bai Feifei’s eyes still lingered on the food.
Sure enough, even though Bai Feifei said she was full, her chopsticks didn’t stop. She finally cleared the remaining appetizing vegetable dishes and, not content with that, picked up a small handful of sunflower seeds. Only then did she finally consider the feast over. The mess on the table would be cleaned up by someone tomorrow, but Huo Wu still tidied up a bit, putting the items on the open kitchen island. Bai Feifei blinked and, with great difficulty, reached out and wiped the table.
“I came to find you so late, and I’m staying here for so long. Won’t people misunderstand?” Bai Feifei’s blood pressure dropped after the meal, and she felt drowsy. To distract herself, she stood up and walked around, saying to Huo Wu, “What if they misunderstand that we’re having an affair?”
Huo Wu was silent for a moment, then slowly and calmly said, “You are also one of the main creators. The screenwriter left, so I had the female lead I chose come over. Is there a problem with that?” The words were not rude, but Bai Feifei felt a little disappointed by such a lack of personal emotion. She responded in a low voice, “Oh.”
Huo Wu lifted her eyelids and looked at her, then used her hand to gently touch the corner of Bai Feifei’s eye. Huo Wu’s focus was on the phrase “the female lead I chose,” but Bai Feifei’s focus was on “you are one of the main creators.” But that was Huo Wu’s personality; she wasn’t someone who liked to spell everything out.
Bai Feifei lifted her face and opened the window to let some air in. The cool wind in the night was gentle. Huo Wu reached out, and Bai Feifei joined her by the window to feel the breeze. After a while, Huo Wu was standing with her shoulders leaning against the wall, her eyes half-closed. She was looking at the stars, but her gaze was on Bai Feifei, whose eyes were almost closed. Bai Feifei’s eyes were so bright, as if stars had fallen from the sky into her eyes, then jumped into Huo Wu’s heart, twinkling.
Huo Wu felt that she should say something at this moment, so she said, “Is it a misunderstanding that we’re having an affair?”
Bai Feifei turned around in surprise, her eyes wide. Her sleepiness was completely gone. After realizing what Huo Wu meant, she suddenly laughed. “It’s not a misunderstanding. Of course, it’s not a misunderstanding. It’s more than just one leg. We have a four-legged relationship.” After saying that, Bai Feifei moved closer to where Huo Wu was standing. She was always like this, as if she had no bones, always wanting to stick close to people, even just leaning against them.
Huo Wu reached out her hand. Bai Feifei remembered Huo Wu asking her if she wanted to hold hands in the car, so she naturally separated her fingers and intertwined them with Huo Wu’s, their forearms touching. Bai Feifei lifted their hands to look at them, and she repeated the slightly suggestive topic in a small, unwilling voice, “Now it’s a four-legged plus two-hand relationship.”
A little whisper would occasionally sound in her ear. At first, Huo Wu’s expression didn’t change. But as Bai Feifei’s words became more and more outrageous, starting to go a little off the rails, a very lively expression appeared on her face for the first time. Her lips pressed down into a very subtle downward curve. Huo Wu looked at Bai Feifei, who immediately began to avert her eyes. She couldn’t bring herself to say any more bold things. Huo Wu then squeezed Bai Feifei’s hand. She found it funny and thought that this timid side of Bai Feifei was a little cute, so she benevolently changed the topic. “There’s a meteor shower at 11 PM tonight.”
Bai Feifei’s attention was easily diverted by Huo Wu. She muttered to herself, looked up, and pretended to be focused on the sky. She was so afraid of missing a shooting star that she looked incredibly busy.
