I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 39
It was probably because Bai Feifei’s mouth was faster than her brain. As soon as the words left her mouth, she felt the sudden silence between them. Huo Wu didn’t respond. Bai Feifei’s heart sank, and she stared at her without blinking.
Just when she thought Huo Wu wouldn’t respond and was about to find an excuse to slip away, Huo Wu spoke.
“Oh, really.”
Huo Wu was silent for a long time before she uttered this phrase. Then, she looked at Bai Feifei’s porcelain-white face and the starry black pupils under her eyelashes and said, “You’ve memorized your lines well.”
Bai Feifei was taken aback. She realized this was a line from the script. Huo Wu had misunderstood, thinking she was reciting lines.
She moved her lips, about to speak, but was interrupted by a young man running over from a distance. The young man looked a bit goofy. He was over six feet tall and walked with a bounce. Even in a loose white T-shirt, he couldn’t hide the youthful energy and the well-trained muscles of a young man—vibrant and strong.
Li Ran jogged over to them, still panting as if he had been running the whole way.
“Feifei, Teacher Huo.” Li Ran took a breath, his hands on his legs, his head tilted up, and one eye squeezed shut. He was clearly very tired. “How are you getting back? Can you give me a ride? My car broke down, and I’m not very familiar with anyone else…”
Bai Feifei’s eyes widened. “I’m with you—”
Huo Wu said, “Sure.”
Bai Feifei’s words were stuck in her throat. Her dark eyes couldn’t help but drift towards Huo Wu. Her expression was filled with an unexplainable sense of grievance. “A-Wu?”
“You can take my car back,” Huo Wu said to Li Ran without looking at Bai Feifei. “The same minivan as before.”
Li Ran let out a sigh of relief, smiling to reveal his white teeth. “Thanks, Sister Wu.”
Li Ran was very handsome. It was said that he had debuted from a talent show, where he ranked second. He had a huge fan base. This afternoon, people were still discussing this. But Bai Feifei didn’t know much about him. She only knew that he was a very sunny big boy. The smile on his face was always very bright, but he didn’t seem to smile often in public; he had to maintain the persona of a handsome “iceberg prince,” because although he was a visual star, his skills were also outstanding, so the company positioned him high.
However, the boy had been very humble all afternoon, and she couldn’t see any of the arrogance of a young idol.
Since Huo Wu had spoken, Bai Feifei had no choice but to give in. She just let out a deep purr from her throat, humming now and then, silently protesting her dissatisfaction at the loss of their alone time.
On the way back to their rooms, Huo Wu’s car separated from theirs, and Bai Feifei didn’t even get to say a final goodbye to her.
She drank some water in her room and rested for a while. Remembering something, she grabbed her phone, downloaded the digital version of the script, and tried to search for a keyword.
“I will never give up…” Bai Feifei’s self-talk faded. She really found it. There was a line in the script very similar to what she had said. It was a line that Fusang said: “I won’t easily give up on anyone or anything I don’t want to give up.”
Like you.
Bai Feifei sat quietly for a while, feeling like her current state was akin to “awkwardness’s mom opening the door for awkwardness, and awkwardness had arrived home.”
“Baby, let’s walk the dogs!” Fu Xiaoxiao called out from the doorway. “Do you want to go out for a bit? You’ve been sitting all day. Let’s get some exercise, and then you can come back, shower, and sleep?”
Bai Feifei thought about it, got up, and walked to the door. “Okay.”
After a full day of script reading, her head was spinning. Many things needed to be sorted out after they had settled, otherwise, with a tired brain, she would only miss many key points and add a lot of useless stuff.
Bai Feifei held Little Cutie’s leash, and Fu Xiaoxiao hugged Jumbo. The two of them stood in the elevator, watching the numbers slowly descend until they reached the first floor.
There was no one downstairs. The sky was completely dark. Bai Feifei and Fu Xiaoxiao walked out. The heat of summer was gone, and they surprisingly felt a little cool.
“Is it really going to rain?” Bai Feifei rubbed her arms and said, “Do we have enough clothes?”
“We do. If not, we’ll just buy more,” Fu Xiaoxiao said. “I also had a batch of luggage shipped over. It’ll get here tomorrow. Light and Shadow is going to be filmed for almost half a year; how could we not be prepared?”
Bai Feifei nodded. “You worked hard.”
Fu Xiaoxiao put Jumbo down from her arms and shook her head, smiling at her. “It’s not hard.”
After walking around the hotel, Bai Feifei was a little tired. She said wearily, “Let’s go back…”
Before she could finish her sentence, Bai Feifei saw someone unexpected appear at the hotel entrance. The person was wearing light pajamas, her long hair was casually clipped back with a large hair clip, and the strands that fell around her cheeks softened her facial features, making her look gentle.
“Huh?” Fu Xiaoxiao was trying to pull the leash of Jumbo, who was trying to break free after seeing something. She didn’t hear what Bai Feifei said. “Baby, what did you say?”
“I didn’t say anything!” Bai Feifei said quickly, jogging a few steps toward the hotel entrance. “A-Wu, why are you out so late?”
Hearing this, Huo Wu lifted the cat in her arms, pointed the cat’s head towards Bai Feifei, and said lightly, “I came out to walk the cat.”
Bai Feifei looked up in confusion. “Do cats need to be walked?”
“I don’t know,” Huo Wu glanced at her, paused, and said, “But it probably really wanted to…”
The white cat was digging its claws into Huo Wu’s shoulder, its eyes vigilantly watching its surroundings like a frightened cat, looking as if it would disappear at the slightest sign of movement, ready to run away at any time.
Huo Wu swallowed the rest of her sentence and said without changing her expression, “It came out to see the world.”
This was a cowardly cat that was terrible but also loved to see the world. Bai Feifei had made her assessment. At that moment, Huo Wu took a candy from her pocket, unwrapped it, and put it in her mouth.
Bai Feifei blinked, looked at the candy wrapper Huo Wu was fidgeting with, and asked, “Is the candy good?”
“Mhm.” Huo Wu nodded, looking at her out of the corner of her eye, and shifted the candy to one side of her mouth.
Bai Feifei walked with her for a while and couldn’t help but ask, “What flavor is it?”
“Peach,” Huo Wu smiled, put the wrapper in her pocket, reached in to feel around, and took out another one. “There’s a green apple one left. Do you want it?”
“Yes!” Bai Feifei’s eyes lit up. She moved Little Cutie to her other side and put the candy in her mouth. The strong green apple flavor melted in her mouth, bringing a lot of refreshing feeling. Even when she inhaled, it was fragrant.
Her mood was sweetened again by the candy. She started walking with Huo Wu again, the candy ball still in her mouth. She mumbled, “How old is it?”
“Three years and eleven months,” Huo Wu said. “It’s a stray cat I picked up.”
“But it’s so beautiful,” Bai Feifei praised sincerely. “Its eyes are so pretty—what’s its name? Is it a boy or a girl?”
“Name?” Huo Wu switched the candy to the other side, looked at Bai Feifei, and said, “Its name is just Little White.”
With that, Huo Wu’s soft, loose jacket brushed against Bai Feifei’s leg. She was startled, subconsciously touching her heart, which had just skipped two beats, and hurried to catch up.
Since the script reading had just started, the schedule was relaxed, and the tasks were light. Plus, it was a modern show, so if they wanted to, they could film quickly. Li Ke didn’t want to push everyone too hard from the beginning.
The second day was off in the morning, which also gave the main team a buffer period to go back and get a deeper understanding of the script and characters. They could get into the zone better in the afternoon.
Huo Wu had given Bai Feifei a few more candies before she left last night. Bai Feifei tried to search for them online but couldn’t find them. She unwrapped another one and realized it was a handmade candy with a print inside. Fu Xiaoxiao also thought the candy was good and went out to ask where they were sold.
In the afternoon, Fu Xiaoxiao came back empty-handed and dejectedly bought a large bag of substitutes. But none of them tasted right. After dropping Bai Feifei off at the script reading room, she went outside by herself to hand out candies to the staff.
The commotion outside was in full swing, but Bai Feifei, in the air-conditioned room, was feeling a little sleepy. There were only about twenty minutes left until the start, and she couldn’t fall asleep. Just as Bai Feifei was about to get up and wash her face, she noticed that it was quiet outside.
She was startled and subconsciously walked to the door. She saw the source of the silence—not far away, Huo Wu had gotten out of her car and was still there. Following closely behind her was Li Ran, whom Huo Wu had driven back last night.
“Was Teacher Huo giving Li Ran a ride back to the hotel last night? I heard they went upstairs together.”
“Are they both staying in the penthouse suites?”
“Yes. The penthouse suites weren’t all booked. I saw on Meituan that there were still a few rooms left.”
“What’s the relationship between Teacher Huo and Li Ran?”
“I heard they’re from the same company. The Li family is also rich. It seems they’re friends who grew up together…”
“Isn’t Huo Wu rumored to be the second daughter of the Ling family who got separated? Where did she get a rich friend she grew up with?”
Bai Feifei went back to her seat, resting her chin in her hand, feeling dejected. All her sleepiness was gone. The noise outside soon disappeared. Li Ke walked in, holding a thermos, his steps like a nine-months-pregnant Donald Duck.
“Okay, today, everyone has half an hour to go through it again. I’ll be asking random questions later—be warned, I already mentioned this yesterday. Today’s script reading isn’t limited to your own character. I’ll also be asking random questions about other characters. Everyone be mentally prepared.”
Li Ke took a sip of hot tea and then pursed his lips. He looked up and said, “Where are Huo Wu and Li Ran? Have they not arrived yet?”
“We’re here!” Li Ran’s voice sounded from the doorway. Everyone looked up and saw Li Ran and Huo Wu walking in, one after the other. Then they all took their seats.
The room was quiet for a moment and then quickly returned to a lively atmosphere. Someone sat down next to Bai Feifei. She looked up and saw Li Ran, who was a whole head taller than her, had sat down next to her. She was silent for a moment, then quietly shifted her script to the left.
Li Ran kept looking at her. He lowered his head and asked, “Why did you move so far away as soon as I sat down? Do you not like me? I feel like I’m very likable.”
Bai Feifei looked up at him, then her gaze shifted to Huo Wu. She wrinkled her nose and said in a very low voice, “My significant other gets jealous.”
