I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 34
“A gift?”
Fu Xiaoxiao’s dazed state hadn’t faded since Bai Feifei mentioned wanting to give Huo Wu a gift.
Bai Feifei and Fu Xiaoxiao were both sitting on small stools on the balcony. Outside the floor-to-ceiling window was a lush green landscape. The sun shone brightly on the earth, looking full of life. Bai Feifei comfortably squinted her eyes.
Hearing the question, Bai Feifei gave a very solemn nod. “Yes. A-Wu has helped me so much, and I want to thank her.” But right now, she had nothing to her name except her meager sincerity, and she was afraid that Huo Wu wouldn’t appreciate it. She was also worried about being too presumptuous and making Huo Wu dislike her.
Fu Xiaoxiao cupped her chin along with her, starting to worry. The filming start date was fast approaching, but finding a suitable gift for someone, especially for Huo Wu, wasn’t something you could solve in a short amount of time.
“How about a sports car?” Fu Xiaoxiao tentatively suggested. “Porsche has a red one that’s pretty cool. I’ve been eyeing it for a long time, but my mom said she’d break my legs if I dared to take out a loan to buy a car…”
“So we don’t have money,” Bai Feifei said seriously.
Fu Xiaoxiao shut up, cradling her face in worry. “Oh, right.”
With no ideas, Bai Feifei opened her phone and tried searching: What’s a suitable gift for a girlfriend?
The number one result was lipstick. That wouldn’t work. Huo Wu had her own makeup team, and besides, she was an ambassador for a cosmetic brand. Even her casual clothes were custom-designed.
Things like necklaces, rings, and other jewelry were even more out of the question. Gifting something too expensive would give anti-fans ammunition to cause trouble, but a cheap gift wasn’t appropriate either. If the brand and price were exposed, the anti-fans would cause trouble just the same.
Bai Feifei rubbed her nose and continued searching: What’s a good gift for a confession?
The first answer was carnations.
Bai Feifei: “…”
Fu Xiaoxiao, who saw this from the side, said in surprise, “How is Baidu even less reliable than my brain? I know carnations are for moms. Good heavens, a gift for a confession? Is he confessing to his mom—oh, Mother’s Day. Never mind.”
The full title of that search result was: What’s a good gift for a Mother’s Day confession to your mother?
Bai Feifei numbly closed her phone. Just as her vision was about to go dark, everything suddenly brightened for a moment. Her fill lights were all turned on.
Fu Xiaoxiao cheered, “The lights are on!”
After they were discharged from the hospital, they would move their stools to the sunny balcony at 8:30 a.m. to wait for the fill lights to turn on. The lights had a full-color spectrum and beautiful colors, with five different bulb colors. However, the final result was a light that looked very much like sunlight, making the plants look even prettier.
Bai Feifei suddenly had an idea. “How about I give A-Wu a succulent?”
She looked at the succulent in the best spot, blinked, and said, “Queen Rose is perfect for her.”
Fu Xiaoxiao walked over to look. She was once again dazzled by the paradise of crystal-clear succulents. She nodded repeatedly. “Good, this is way more reliable than those carnations…”
Bai Feifei went over and picked the most beautiful one. She hadn’t had the succulent for very long, but its good genes, original pot and soil, and her good care meant that the succulent’s condition hadn’t faded at all. The leaves were still a crystal-clear red and white, with vibrant and strong contrasting colors. Under direct sunlight, they were so clear they looked like fake flowers.
The plane flew through layers of clouds. Bai Feifei was fortunate enough to witness a rare morning glow. It was noon in the middle of summer when the plane landed. Their group had flown from the city of Boyuan and landed in the ancient, historical city of Luoshui.
The passengers, who had been quiet for a long time, finally stirred. Many were stretching and relaxing, accompanied by sounds of either comfort or pain.
Bai Feifei stood up. Her slightly slender height and glowing white face stood out in the crowd, and many people frequently turned to look at her.
“Should I put on my mask?” Bai Feifei said in a low voice. “I’m all dressed up today, am I a bit too flashy?”
Bai Xue had arrived with her professional makeup team early this morning and dug her out of bed, holding her in a chair to do her makeup. When she finally woke up, she looked up and saw that it was only six o’clock in the morning, just as the sun was rising. The entire makeup and hair process took less than half an hour.
Under the morning sun, the face in the mirror had a hazy beauty, as if covered by a thin layer of fog that made people want to get closer to see it clearly.
“Being flashy is fine,” Bai Xue said with a laugh. “There are a lot of shows filming at the film studio here in the ancient city, and fans of all sorts of actors and idols are gathered here. There are also a lot of scalpers and live-streamers who wait from morning until night. It’s free exposure, so why not take it?”
“Then should I be a little flashier too? I can’t embarrass my baby.” Fu Xiaoxiao immediately took off her mask, pulled out a lipstick from her pocket, and hesitated over which shade to choose.
Bai Feifei turned her head, handed Fu Xiaoxiao her usual nude-colored lip gloss, and held up a mirror for her. “Take your time. No rush.”
Bai Xue had already arranged everything. A car was waiting outside to pick her up. Fu Xiaoxiao’s makeup was done quickly. After the final touch-up, she smiled at Bai Feifei and said happily, “Do I look good?”
“You look great!” Bai Feifei looked at her seriously and wiped a bit off the edge of her lips.
Bai Feifei carefully protected the plant in her hand as she walked out. She was worried that the succulent’s leaves would get damaged, so she held it carefully the entire way, waiting to give it to Huo Wu.
When they reached the airport exit, Bai Feifei stopped and looked around, a little lost, not knowing where to go. Bai Xue and Fu Xiaoxiao had gone to get the luggage, and she was waiting for the car, but she looked around several times and didn’t see a car with the Light and Shadow logo.
She was getting a little tired of standing. Plus, she was wearing long jeans today. Bai Feifei didn’t mind that the ground was dirty and carefully protected the succulent in her hand as she sat down on a step by the side of the road. She also made sure to sit somewhere that wasn’t in the way.
With nothing to do, Bai Feifei took out her phone. The phone case had a picture that she had specially commissioned online. It was a cover image that she had dug up from Huo Wu’s manager, Ji Meng’s, WeChat Moments. It was an unedited photo that Ji Meng had taken herself and was especially beautiful. It hadn’t been circulated yet, and Bai Feifei was the only one with a phone case made from it.
She took a photo of the succulent and then opened Huo Wu’s WeChat.
[Bai Feifei: A-Wu, are you at the set yet?]
[Bai Feifei: I’m almost there. I have a gift for you.]
Huo Wu still didn’t reply. Bai Feifei swayed her legs as she waited. When she didn’t get a message, she put her phone back in her pocket and continued to wait obediently for Fu Xiaoxiao and Bai Xue.
They arrived a moment later, and so did the car that was coming to pick Bai Feifei up. The car did indeed have the Light and Shadow logo on it—two very flashy, slanted characters that glowed blue. If Bai Feifei hadn’t auditioned for the show herself, she would have thought this was a film crew for some children’s fantasy TV series.
“Wow, this car is pretty cool!” Fu Xiaoxiao cheered and jogged over to the side of the road. She was very familiar with the driver and started chatting with him. “Sir, is your crew that rich? You sent a G500 Night Edition to pick someone up?”
The driver took off his sunglasses, revealing an unsmiling face. Fu Xiaoxiao blinked a moment too late and took a step back, slowly pulling her neck in. The person who came was Li Ke himself. It was truly terrifying.
Li Ke got out of the car.
Bai Feifei slowly got up from the side of the road, patted her butt to get rid of any nonexistent dust, and also found it a little hard to believe. “Director Li? Why did you come yourself?”
Li Ke had a cigarette in his mouth, unlit, but his brows were furrowed tightly. Through his sunglasses, it was hard to tell what he was thinking. After a while, he turned his gaze to Bai Xue, who hadn’t spoken much. He pushed up his glasses and said, “How long have you been back? You didn’t even contact me. Why didn’t you say anything?”
Bai Xue raised her eyebrows, a smile flashing in her eyes. She lifted the corner of her lips and said lightly, “None of your business.”
Li Ke was instantly choked up, his eyebrows furrowed and his lips pulled down. Bai Feifei thought he was about to get angry, but in the next second, Li Ke crossed his arms, squatted down on the ground, and presented them with a back that clearly stated, “I’m angry and can’t be appeased.”
Bai Feifei’s mouth dropped open. She hadn’t even fully registered her shock when the back window was rolled down a crack, revealing half of Huo Wu’s face.
Huo Wu was also wearing sunglasses. Without much pleasantries, she said, “We’ll be late if we don’t leave now.”
Li Ke grunted, bit down on his cigarette holder, and got back in the car. Just as Bai Feifei was about to go over and chat with Huo Wu, Li Ke stuck his head out the car window and said like a squabbling child, “I won’t say it if I don’t want to!”
With a “bang,” the car door was heavily slammed shut and locked. Bai Feifei: “…” Was this childish person really the devil director who acted like a disciplinarian during her audition?
She lowered her hand to pull the door, but it wouldn’t open, so she had to walk to the other side. Then, she awkwardly squeezed into the car with the succulent. The weather was hot, and she had been outside for a long time, so her body was hot. When she opened the door, a wave of hot air rushed out.
Huo Wu frowned but didn’t avoid her. She said, “How long have you been waiting?”
“Not long!” A thin layer of sweat covered Bai Feifei’s forehead. Her breathing was a little ragged from getting in the car. “I need to wipe my sweat…”
She casually placed the succulent on the middle console and took out a small mirror to wipe the sweat from her face. Bai Feifei had raised the Queen Rose so beautifully that its leaves were almost translucent. Huo Wu’s gaze couldn’t help but linger on it a few times.
The car was spacious. The three of them filled the back seat perfectly. The air conditioning was on full blast, and the heat quickly dissipated. Li Ke started the car, and the speed became stable.
The streets outside, accompanied by vast stretches of road and green trees, flashed by as they gradually entered a residential area. Bai Feifei was curious about the local customs of the ancient city and couldn’t help but look out the window, occasionally letting out an awed “wow.”
When they stopped at a red light, she suddenly heard Huo Wu say, “Didn’t you say you had a gift for me? Where is it?”
Hearing this, Li Ke curiously rolled his eyes to look at the rearview mirror. He didn’t even bother to fix his sunglasses, which had slid down to the middle of his nose. He was clearly curious and said without any reserve, “A gift? What gift? How come the director doesn’t get a gift, but the lead actor does? You’re not very smart, little Bai Feifei. If you keep this up, the director will suppress you, I’m telling you…”
