I Was Taken by the Female Lead After Transmigrating into a Book - Chapter 106
The fifth floor and all the intensive care rooms above it had a dedicated person who delivered meals and cleaned up. Generally speaking, not many people who lived there ate the hospital’s meals. Jiang Yueming also had a personal attendant who took care of her. Her meals were always prepared at an outside kitchen and delivered to her, with the menu depending on Jiang Yueming’s preference for the day.
When they arrived, Jiang Yueming had just finished her meal and was half-lying in bed, watching TV on the big screen on the opposite wall.
Bai Feifei didn’t know what she was watching. She hesitated at the door for a moment and said, “I want to go find the doctor first to get a detailed report on how my mom is recovering.”
WeChat chats were too restrictive. The various reports and data on Jiang Yueming’s condition couldn’t be fully shared with Bai Feifei, let alone the medical imaging reports that she couldn’t understand. It was also too much to ask the doctor to learn how to use Photoshop to mark them up for her.
Now that she was in Yan City, it was much easier to directly communicate with the doctor about Jiang Yueming’s various reports and data.
Bai Feifei only had a general idea of her recent reports and condition. To get more detailed information, she had to talk to the doctor in person.
After Bai Feifei left, Huo Wu and Fu Xiaoxiao were left in an awkward silence.
Huo Wu clearly showed her distaste for Fu Xiaoxiao. She immediately turned to follow Bai Feifei to the doctor. But before she could take a step, Fu Xiaoxiao grabbed her arm.
“Don’t go!” Fu Xiaoxiao held onto her like she was a life-saver. Her mind went blank, and she blurted out, “Help me with the introduction!”
Huo Wu: “…”
Fu Xiaoxiao’s expression went blank for two seconds. She reluctantly let go of her hand and said pitifully, “I-I-I don’t know why I’m suddenly a little scared. Don’t leave me, my darling’s girlfriend.”
Huo Wu stared intently at Fu Xiaoxiao’s face, which could even be described as radiant. A tiny bit of pity finally arose in her heart. She said with a hint of compassion, “Let’s go. I’ll introduce you.”
Fu Xiaoxiao followed her in, swallowing her pride.
When Bai Feifei finished her consultation and walked into the room with a stack of Jiang Yueming’s various medical reports and documents, she saw an extremely bizarre scene.
Jiang Yueming lived in a private room, which was arranged at the doctor’s suggestion. Her condition was complex, but interacting with people without any burden or pressure was beneficial to her. Especially after seeing her fellow patients get discharged, Jiang Yueming would subconsciously start to hope that she too could recover and leave.
The two-person room had previously been occupied, but the other bed was now empty. Huo Wu was sitting there, and Fu Xiaoxiao was sitting on a small stool, behaving so well it was almost unbelievable. Bai Feifei had just learned that the patient in the other bed had been discharged some time ago, so Jiang Yueming had been living there alone for about a week, and a new person hadn’t been assigned yet.
But the atmosphere inside was a little strange.
Bai Feifei stopped at the door and asked suspiciously, “What are you all watching? You’re so serious.”
She hadn’t entered quietly, especially since the hallway and the room were so silent. But out of the three people inside, only Huo Wu got up to help her take the things and tidy up. Fu Xiaoxiao seemed to be committed to the “accompanying Jiang Yueming to watch TV” act. Her posture was straight, and she hadn’t moved at all.
Fu Xiaoxiao remained in her previous pose without moving. Huo Wu glanced at Jiang Yueming, who also hadn’t moved. She said in a low voice, “Behind the Scenes. The broadcast date is today, and it’s already eight o’clock.”
They had arrived at the hotel at about six o’clock, and after the journey to the hospital, Bai Feifei had spent a long time talking. The Behind the Scenes show had already started.
“Ah,” Bai Feifei said. She looked at the screen and said a little dejectedly, “I forgot. I wanted to watch it with you at the hotel tonight.”
“You can watch it when you get back; it’s the same,” Huo Wu lowered her head and gently tapped her forehead against Bai Feifei’s. She said with a smile, “That way, we can skip the commercials.”
The commercials were for brands that Huo Wu herself endorsed, but she didn’t want to watch them.
Bai Feifei found it inexplicably funny. With her eyes curved in a smile, she said, “But I think the commercials are great, too.”
Huo Wu responded in a low voice, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you watch them too much, you won’t want to anymore.”
“I’ll never get tired of them,” Bai Feifei said with a huff. “I can listen to your commercials as a background sound for the rest of my life.”
Huo Wu thought about what that scene would look like, based on what Bai Feifei had just said. She came to a four-word conclusion: My life is over.
Bai Feifei finished packing everything. She would take it back to the hotel and then mail it home. The housekeeper would be responsible for receiving it and organizing everything once she returned.
On the single bed, about a meter away from them, Jiang Yueming’s gaze had shifted from the TV on the wall to Bai Feifei and Huo Wu at some point.
Her eyes were calm and gentle. For so many years, even during a flare-up of her illness, she had never hurt anyone. Her eyes were always as gentle as water, yet they were also as empty as a water’s surface, without a single ripple.
Her reaction to the outside world was minimal. She would even form a fake shell to deal with everything that was put upon her. It was as if another person was controlling her body, responding to everyone who spoke to her and giving the appropriate reactions.
This was the entire impression that everyone, including Jiang Yueming herself, had of her for so many years.
But at this moment, a glimmer of hope seemed to finally appear in those eyes that were as placid as an ancient well.
“Auntie Qin just told me that this show was something my mom specifically asked to watch,” Bai Feifei said suddenly as she opened the door after being silent the entire way.
Huo Wu turned to close the door behind them. She embraced Bai Feifei and held her tightly for a while before letting go. “Tell me all about it.”
Bai Feifei and Jiang Yueming had been separated before. Auntie Qin was the only way for Huo Wu to get information on Jiang Yueming’s condition. In the past, Auntie Qin mostly said that Jiang Yueming was doing well. But not long ago, she started saying that Jiang Yueming was finally showing an interest in her.
From a few words at the beginning to now watching a whole documentary about her.
But Jiang Yueming hadn’t shown any special interest in her at the hospital. She didn’t even proactively say a few words to her, even until Bai Feifei left.
Huo Wu pondered for a long time after hearing this. She hugged Bai Feifei like a big toy and led her to the spacious sofa. Then, she comfortably felt her weight, feeling her heart and her empty arms being filled.
Her eyes kept moving over Bai Feifei’s smooth skin. She would occasionally gently press her thumb on the sensitive, delicate skin, watching Bai Feifei’s skin turn white from the pressure and then quickly turn red after she let go.
Huo Wu had suspected a tattoo for a long time but had never asked or done anything about it.
She still didn’t plan to ask, but she decided to have Ji Meng ask about the situation tomorrow.
After thinking about Jiang Yueming’s change for a long time, she said the same thing she had said countless times before: “This is a good thing.”
Bai Feifei couldn’t help but sigh again. She rubbed against Huo Wu’s chest and said softly, “But Auntie Qin secretly told me today that my mom was secretly watching me. She seemed to want to talk to me and even reached out to touch me, but she didn’t in the end.”
She wasn’t like this the first time she returned and saw Jiang Yueming. Back then, Jiang Yueming at least didn’t resist her touch and would react to Bai Feifei. Although it was a little slow, like a rusty robot.
But from Bai Feifei’s limited perspective, the current Jiang Yueming was much better. She was no longer silently and meaninglessly cooperating with the treatment. She was proactively starting to do things.
Thinking of this, Bai Feifei looked up, gave Huo Wu a light kiss on the lips, and became happy again. “But you’re right, it’s a good thing. Everything is a good thing.”
Bai Feifei’s ability to become happy so easily was always especially attractive. Huo Wu was the first to fall for it.
Her lips unconsciously curled into a smile. She placed her hands on either side of Bai Feifei’s waist, lightly rubbing her, and pressed Bai Feifei’s body down to hold her close.
She held her tightly again. Huo Wu listened to Bai Feifei’s lively chattering, listening quietly and responding constantly.
The time for rest was short. But compared to the previous boring schedule, the upcoming arrangements, while more demanding, only increased Bai Feifei’s anticipation.
She and Huo Wu had more scenes together, but due to the nature of the show, it wasn’t an exaggerated amount.
The temperature in Yan City was much more manageable than in Luoshui City. The temperature in Luoshui City during the months they were filming was bizarre and erratic. It was either days of scorching heat or days of continuous rain. The meteorological bureau’s drought and flood warnings were frequent, making it to the top of the trending topics several times. The area was also a filming location, so many celebrities would have to post something every now and then to show that they were safe and sound.
The temperature in Yan City stayed around 35°C, which was bearable both indoors and outdoors. They just had to avoid the sun’s glare, but that wasn’t the case in the studio.
The large lights everywhere only intensified the heat. The only good thing was that they didn’t need to build many sets. Most of the filming was done on location.
The central air conditioning in the police station was very powerful. Bai Feifei, wearing the clothes for her role—a short-sleeved shirt and capri pants—was a complete contrast to the actors opposite her who were wearing full police uniforms.
She shivered from the cold and curled her already icy fingertips into a fist. Only with the slight warmth in her palm could she feel a faint sense of warmth.
After the run-through, Bai Feifei got up and hopped in place a few times while taking a deep breath.
Fu Xiaoxiao walked over with a windbreaker, an item that was rarely seen in the summer. She draped it over Bai Feifei and rubbed her hands with a pained expression. “Why can’t they turn the temperature up a little in such a cold place so you can act like it’s cold?”
“I’m not the only actor here,” Bai Feifei said, not minding it at all. She pointed outside with her chin. “There are a lot of police officers working here. What are they supposed to do? It’s 37°C outside. Does it make sense to have it at 30°C in here?”
Fu Xiaoxiao pouted. Her face was filled with unhappiness, but she didn’t say anything else. She just honestly hugged Bai Feifei and used her own body temperature to warm her up.
The Behind the Scenes crew was still filming. The camera was aimed directly at the two of them. The director seized the opportunity and threw out a question: “Your relationship is really good.”
Fu Xiaoxiao loved it when someone said that about her and Bai Feifei. She was overjoyed and said happily, “Of course.”
The director said with a smile, “The first episode went straight to the top of the trending topics last night. We haven’t had a chance to share the good news with our main characters yet. Feifei, did you watch our first episode last night? What did you think?”
Bai Feifei answered honestly, “I didn’t get a chance to watch it yet, but I’ll definitely tune in for the rerun tonight.”
The director hadn’t expected this answer. Even if the artist forgot, with the ratings so high, the manager should have reminded Bai Feifei.
The director quickly came up with a suitable response. “Then you should be able to watch it with some anticipation tonight. Remember to join the chat.”
Bai Feifei kept nodding and smiling with her eyes curved. “I didn’t get to see it, but my mom watched the whole thing. She must have really liked it. She was very focused yesterday.”
At that moment, the film crew didn’t know that this seemingly innocent sentence that Bai Feifei had said was such a big emotional punch that would only be revealed by viewers who knew about it at the end of the show, once again making the entire internet feel for this strong and lonely girl.
When Li Ke called for them, the few questions from the film crew had already been asked. They once again perfectly hid behind the various cameras.
The director stood in the corner and pressed the record button to listen to the playback.
The recorder next to him couldn’t help but mumble, “Why did she say that so strangely? Feifei’s mom watched the whole thing, but she didn’t watch it herself. Why does she say she ‘must have really liked it?’ What mother wouldn’t like her child’s work? Our show was edited so well, and Feifei filmed so seriously. I heard that because our first episode aired, several film crews who wanted to gain fame with their ‘acting’ are already reaching out to us. Feifei’s staff also said they’ve received offers for several popular variety shows about acting.”
The recorder was still young and hadn’t been through much. Although he knew every family was different, his understanding was still limited.
The director didn’t explain much. He just said, “We’re almost at the part about their lives. You’ll find out then.”
The behind-the-scenes show was split into work and life, truly filming every bit of an actor’s life on set.
Bai Feifei would finish filming earlier. For the last two weeks, they would film her life after leaving the set. At that point, the behind-the-scenes show would finally end.
