I Was Just a Scumbag Extra, But She Loved Me Anyway [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 40
Pei Nanxu hurried to Yu Xi’s residence.
This apartment seemed to be arranged by Chu Ningxin—located in a high-end neighborhood with tight security. No paparazzi could possibly get in. Chu Ningxin could entangle herself with Yu Xi here without worry.
But the indulgent joy clearly belonged only to Chu Ningxin. For Yu Xi, all this place seemed to offer was disappointment.
Pei Nanxu entered the code Yu Xi had given her and pushed the door open.
“Yu Xi? Yu—”
She had only just started to call out when she fell silent, frowning as she scanned the room.
The living room was a mess. The couch cushions had been tossed to the floor, decorative items on the shelves were shattered, and a glass of milk had been spilled and left unattended. The whole place looked like it had been ransacked.
Judging by the scene, Yu Xi had likely had a fight with Chu Ningxin—and a very intense one at that.
Pei Nanxu frowned deeper. She stopped calling Yu Xi’s name and instead began checking the apartment room by room in silence.
Not in the living room.
Not in the master bedroom.
Not in the guest room.
Not in the walk-in closet, either—or so it seemed.
But just as she passed the closet door, Pei Nanxu suddenly heard the faint sound of someone crying. She paused, then followed the sound to the bathroom connected to the master bedroom.
The door was half open. The crying was coming from inside.
Pei Nanxu pushed the door gently. A sweet, heavy floral scent hit her immediately—mixed with faint traces of pheromones and the lingering atmosphere of passion.
Yu Xi sat on the cold bathroom floor with nothing on but a towel wrapped around her. Her long legs and bare back were exposed to the air, glowing pale and smooth under the lights—like fine jade, fragile and pure, looking utterly vulnerable.
Pei Nanxu’s gaze briefly skimmed over that ivory-white skin, then calmly looked away.
Yu Xi was curled up, hugging her knees, crying. She must’ve heard Pei Nanxu come in, because she hiccuped and slowly lifted her head. Her face was pale, her eyes swollen red from crying, with strands of damp hair clinging to her cheeks. She looked heartbreakingly pitiful.
Pei Nanxu’s heart softened. She crouched beside her and asked gently, “What happened?”
Yu Xi looked at her for a moment, her eyes turning even redder. Her voice trembled slightly as she spoke:
“I fought with Chu Ningxin again. We had another fight.”
Pei Nanxu paused. “What was it about?”
“A role,” Yu Xi let out a bitter laugh. Because of the tears in her eyes, the laugh looked especially sorrowful. “Just a role. I have a very important project starting soon. I’ve been preparing for the part for a long time. But just now, she said she wants me to go to Paris with her the day after tomorrow. And if the schedule conflicts, she said I should just push the shoot back.”
Pei Nanxu lowered her lashes, saying nothing.
“It’s always like this,” Yu Xi said, hugging her knees even tighter. Her whole body shrank into itself. “Every time, she expects me to give in. I worked so hard for this role, put everything into it… and she dismisses it all with one sentence, like it’s nothing. I really am just some plaything she keeps around, something she can mess with whenever she likes.
My feelings… they mean nothing to her. She has no heart. She doesn’t care about me at all.”
As Yu Xi spoke through her tears, Pei Nanxu glanced at the loose towel wrapped around her. Without a word, she slipped off her own coat and gently draped it over Yu Xi’s shoulders, covering the skin that was moments away from being exposed.
“Do you still remember our agreement?” Pei Nanxu asked calmly.
Yu Xi sniffled, her red-rimmed eyes turning toward her. Tears glimmered in her bright, clear eyes.
“I remember… When you came to me, you said I didn’t have to do anything else—just sit with you and answer a few questions.”
She let out a bitter smile through her tears, looking soft and pitiful.
“And in exchange, if I ever wanted to leave Chu Ningxin, you’d help me. Did you already know I’d eventually break things off with her?”
“Mhm.” Pei Nanxu responded with a quiet hum.
How could someone who truly cared possibly endure being treated like they didn’t matter for so long?
Back when she had only glimpsed Yu Xi in a corridor at the club, Pei Nanxu had felt that her face looked familiar. After returning to the Su household, she immediately pulled some strings to look into Yu Xi’s background.
Though she knew it was unlikely, even the slightest chance—even a vague, inexplicable feeling—had given her hope. She had wanted Yu Xi to be the one she was searching for.
…But unfortunately, it wasn’t her.
Pei Nanxu had realized that after just one proper meeting.
Yu Xi wasn’t the one.
Even without concrete memories, she simply knew. If it was the person she was looking for, she would’ve felt more at ease in her presence.
That person would look at her with gentle curiosity, tinged with a bit of shyness. She might tease lightly, act a little careless at times, but when it truly mattered, she’d be reliable—always one step ahead, solving problems before they even surfaced. She would be there whenever Pei Nanxu needed her—not stare at her in confusion and fear.
Besides, Yu Xi was still in love with Chu Ningxin.
“If you’ve truly decided to leave her, I can help you make arrangements,” Pei Nanxu said quietly. “But you need to be sure. If you back out halfway and Chu Ningxin finds out I’m the one helping you, I won’t be able to protect you after that.”
“…I know.” Yu Xi slowly lowered her head.
“I… I really haven’t been able to let go of her all this time. You probably think I’m pathetic for that, don’t you? But some things aren’t that easy to explain. Even when you know something is irrational and useless, it doesn’t mean you can stop feeling it.
But this time, I really do want to leave her. Even if it hurts, I want to go. She always says I’d never survive without her… but I know I can. I don’t want to hear that from her anymore.”
Pei Nanxu gave her a long, searching look. “Alright.”
After all, they had both spent time in the same orphanage. She’d help her—just this once—for the sake of their shared childhood memories.
“…You’ve always seen me as a substitute for someone else, haven’t you?”
Before Pei Nanxu could explain her plan in detail, Yu Xi spoke again, eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
“I can tell. Every time we meet, you’re always in a low mood—like you’re just using our time together to distract yourself. If you’re not afraid of anything, why not go and find the person you’re actually looking for?”
Pei Nanxu froze, her usual calm expression faltering.
“Because… I don’t even know who that person is.”
“Huh?” Yu Xi blinked, stunned.
Pei Nanxu pinched the bridge of her nose. “Forget it, it’s not that important. Let’s focus on your plan to leave Chu Ningxin. Even if you’ve made up your mind, it’s not like you can just walk away immediately. Don’t you still have a few ongoing projects? Take care of the contractual obligations first, and I’ll help you with the rest.”
Yu Xi pulled the slipping coat tighter over her shoulders and said softly, “I’ll go back and talk about terminating the contracts.”
“And it can’t happen while Chu Ningxin is still in the country,” Pei Nanxu added calmly. “Otherwise, she’ll notice the moment you make a move.”
Yu Xi hesitated. “…Got it.”
Pei Nanxu nodded and was about to continue when her phone suddenly rang. The moment the ringtone sounded, her expression turned grim.
“W-What’s wrong?” Yu Xi asked cautiously.
“It’s nothing.” Pei Nanxu’s tone was cold as she rejected the call without even looking, returning to the topic of arrangements.
But just two seconds later, the phone rang again—persistently, insistently—cutting her off once more.
Yu Xi, watching Pei Nanxu’s expression, gently suggested, “Maybe… you should just answer it?”
“…I’ll go see what it is.” With a dark expression, Pei Nanxu stood up and walked into the living room.
She already knew who was calling without even checking.
It was Cheng Xi.
She had set a special ringtone for Cheng Xi long ago to avoid answering by accident—she hated getting calls from her. And even though she usually declined them, it always ended the same way: like this.
What was so urgent that Cheng Xi had to call so relentlessly this time?
Pei Nanxu took a deep breath and answered. “Hello?”
“It’s me, Nanxu.” Cheng Xi’s soft voice came through the line. “Are you free right now? President Su and Chenli aren’t home—they won’t be back soon. Come home and chat with me for a bit.”
Pei Nanxu closed her eyes. “Why can’t you just say it over the phone?”
“It’s something important. Come home and we’ll talk it over,” Cheng Xi said, her tone tightening slightly. “Don’t make me repeat myself. Be good.”
Pei Nanxu took another breath. “I’ve got work at the office. Another day.”
“If you don’t talk today, someone might come to the office tomorrow to have that conversation anyway,” Cheng Xi sighed. “Why make things difficult? It’s better if we just talk quietly, isn’t it?”
“…” Pei Nanxu closed her eyes again. “Fine. I understand.”
She hung up the phone, standing motionless for a moment, brows furrowed. Then Yu Xi peeked her head out from behind the door and asked carefully, “Did you finish the call?”
Pei Nanxu turned to look at her, hesitated, then said, “I might need to head back for a bit. Something urgent came up. I’ll message you the rest of the plan later.”
Yu Xi nodded obediently. “Okay.”
【Host… is this really going to work?】
Downstairs from Yu Xi’s apartment, a black Bentley sat quietly in a shaded spot not far from the building entrance.
Su Chenli leaned her head against the steering wheel, rubbing her temples as she answered with a sigh, “What else can I do? Isn’t this the part of the plot where Pei Nanxu helps Yu Xi run away? This worldline keeps glitching—what if my beautiful sister suddenly decides to flee with Yu Xi tonight? At least if I’m here, I’ll know where they’re going.”
She was also a resident in this complex—of course she’d show up.
【Oh… I see.】 The system sounded like it half-understood.
Su Chenli didn’t bother explaining further. The storyline just had to progress now, of all times, throwing off all the groundwork she’d been laying. She was fuming.
Just as she sulked in silence, someone suddenly rushed out of the building—walking fast, clearly flustered, not even glancing to either side.
【Hey! It’s the loyal second female lead! And she’s alone! This is great, Host! Looks like there’s nothing romantic going on between her and the canary-type omega!】
The system was ecstatic, but Su Chenli frowned instead. “Why does my beautiful sister… look kind of upset?”
【Huh?】
“…I hope nothing unexpected happened,” Su Chenli muttered, narrowing her eyes. “I’ll follow from a distance—just in case.”
