- Episode 27 - I Will Substitute for You (Part 1)
The next morning, the sky was covered in thick clouds, and the sun did not show its face. There was no sign of rain, but the mere fact that it was overcast gave her a bad feeling. Even if she wanted to change her mood, the unfortunate sky made it impossible. As Bertina stood by the window, gazing absently at the sky, a glowing butterfly appeared around her. It circled around and around, and when she reached out curiously, it landed on her finger. The way it slowly flapped its wings up and down was just like a real butterfly, except for its glowing body. Wondering if Argent had created it with magic, she watched as it shone brightly and then vanished.
“What was that?” she murmured.
She decided to ask Argent when he returned from fetching breakfast.
Bertina waited eagerly to see what breakfast would bring this morning.
——Meanwhile, inside the grand cathedral. Inanna walked down a long corridor, reading some documents, with her aide Alistair by her side. Though he urged her to hurry since the crown prince was waiting in the high priest’s room, Inanna’s pace remained unchanged.
“You’ve already looked over these documents several times, haven’t you?”
“I never get tired of looking at them. You were surprised too, weren’t you, Alistair?”
“I was. But keeping royalty waiting makes me uneasy, to say the least.”
“If that’s how you feel, you won’t last long after I’m gone.”
“What?!”
“Just kidding.”
Inanna chuckled at Alistair, who was annoyed at her ominous words, and then turned her attention back to the documents. Deep down, she sensed that this was no laughing matter.
“It seems Luigi is definitely human. So is Agnes.”
“Where did Lady Moldio acquire her power of fascination?”
“I have one idea. If I’m right, she must have been deeply obsessed with the idea of having an ‘older brother.'”
“What do you mean?”
She abruptly ended the topic, saying it wasn’t the time to discuss it yet, and moved on to talk about Luigi.
“If Luigi bought contraceptive medicine from the apothecary… I mean, from Crow’s side…”
Based on the information from Argent’s report, if he could tolerate his wife’s physical relationship with her biological brother but drew the line at her getting pregnant, then as a man renowned for being a devoted husband, he had Agnes’s complete trust. If he told Crow it was medicine good for his health and made him drink it, Agnes wouldn’t suspect a thing. If she were a young lady with a personal interest in medicine or came from a family of apothecaries, she would have realized it was contraceptive medicine. But aside from loving her brother as a member of the opposite sex, Agnes was no different from an ordinary young lady. Moreover, Luigi had deceived Agnes into taking medicine that made her more likely to get pregnant, pretending it was contraceptive medicine.
What Agnes wanted was a child with her brother.
What Luigi wanted was his own child.
Trusting Luigi completely, Agnes made her brother take the contraceptive medicine, never realizing that what she was taking was actually medicine to increase her chances of pregnancy.
“If Lady Inanna’s prediction is correct, then the daughter of the Moldio family would be the child of the Moldio couple, wouldn’t she?”
“That’s right! If Clarissa isn’t the child of Agnes and Crow, then she isn’t a child of taboo. That works in our favor, so let’s leave it at that.”
“Why doesn’t the Duke of Moldio condemn his wife’s actions…?”
If he wasn’t under the influence of fascination, his thinking should be normal. As the only one in a position to point out how abnormal Agnes’s behavior was, Alistair wanted to say that Luigi, who smiled and accepted everything about Agnes, was the abnormal one.
Inanna turned around sharply, flashed a seductive smile, and hid her mouth behind the documents.
“Maybe Luigi has a kind of love ordinary people can’t understand. Even if he loved her normally, Agnes’s eyes would only be on Crow. So, perhaps the only way Luigi could stay by her side was to become her greatest ally and partner?”
“That’s insane.”
“That, too, is a form of love.”
There is no fixed form for love.
As they talked, they arrived at the high priest’s room, where Riet was waiting. Seeing Inanna enter, he started to rise, but she gestured for him to stay seated and sat across from him. She handed the documents to Riet, and just as his lavender eyes began scanning the text, a flustered priest rushed in. Even though Alistair tried to caution him in front of the crown prince, the priest explained that several men were causing a violent disturbance in front of the cathedral, and they were uncontrollable, loudly demanding the high priest come out.
A commotion at this timing… Inanna thought for a few seconds, gave a wry smile, and stood up.
“I’ll go check it out~ Keep reading, Your Highness.”
“No, I’ll arrange for knights.”
“Don’t let appearances fool you. I’m strong, you know~?”
Even as Alistair looked at her with concern, she closed one eye and assured him it was fine, then headed toward the commotion. Left behind, Riet lost all interest in reading the documents, set them on the table, and chased after Inanna along with Alistair.
He had a bad feeling. Inanna had claimed she was strong, but he couldn’t shake the sense of foreboding.
