- Chapter 69 - Reunited with My Parents
When Yu Peirong received the news, she rushed out immediately, dropping everything she had on hand and speeding out of the underground garage to meet Qi Xiyao.
Qi Xiyao had explained the situation to her in fragments over the phone, and only then did Yu Peirong fully understand what had happened.
Recently, there had been a crackdown on organized crime. In the process, authorities caught a group involved in a serious crime: an attempted break-in and assault on an Omega. The offense was particularly vile. Further investigation revealed that the group had prior criminal records, which led investigators to uncover even more past cases, including victims from years ago.
During interrogation, one of the suspects, hoping for a reduced sentence, confessed to crimes he had kept hidden. Among them were details about those responsible for attacking Qi Xiyao’s mother years ago.
By the time Qi Xiyao found out, her mother had already gone to the police station to provide testimony.
When Yu Peirong arrived, the statements were nearly finished. In the hospital hallway where they were gathering information, she saw a slim figure standing quietly.
The woman was in her forties, not quite fifty, still retaining a graceful beauty. But at that moment, she looked worn and fragile, leaning on Qi Xiyao’s shoulder and tightly holding her daughter’s hand, drawing what little strength she could.
She was trembling all over, clearly haunted by the pain of those memories.
Victims of such trauma often carry lifelong emotional scars. Her condition was even more severe than Xu Xiaoqi’s. Though Xu Xiaoqi, with Ye An’s support, had gradually become more cheerful and optimistic, Qi Xiyao’s mother was not doing nearly as well.
She had a deep-rooted fear of Alphas. Even during her husband Qi Bin’s rut periods, he had to rely on suppressants and isolate himself in a special room, enduring it alone.
His guilt and love for Zhuang Xiufen kept him by her side through the years. Though Zhuang had slowly mellowed from her earlier volatility, she still could not tolerate an Alpha’s pheromones.
Doctors had tried pheromone therapy with her, but the moment any scent was released, she was overwhelmed by fear, clinging to the bedsheets in panic.
Eventually, the doctors had no choice but to send her home and advise against any further contact with Alphas.
Yu Peirong still remembered how distant Zhuang had been the last time she visited Qi Xiyao’s home.
With her psychology background, Yu Peirong understood the depth of her trauma and never rushed or expected Zhuang to accept her.
Knowing this visit would be even more emotionally charged, Yu Peirong stayed quietly at a distance in the hallway. She met eyes with Qi Xiyao, ready to leave without a word, but saw Qi Xiyao helping her mother to her feet.
Together, they walked over to her.
Qi Xiyao’s voice was gentle as always, calm and reassuring: “Come to my house?”
Yu Peirong nodded and drove them home.
That afternoon, Qi Bin made a table full of home-cooked dishes and invited Yu Peirong to stay for lunch.
During the meal, Yu Peirong noticed a distinct change in Zhuang Xiufen’s attitude. Though the couple had always been polite, Zhuang had previously kept her distance. But this time, she warmly offered her food, catching Yu Peirong completely off guard.
Qi Bin had made all of Yu Peirong’s favorite dishes, clearly with advance input from Qi Xiyao. Surprised by how warmly the family now treated her, Yu Peirong realized she had expected winning them over would take much longer.
She smiled sweetly. “Thank you, Auntie.”
Zhuang Xiufen returned a gentle smile. “It’s no trouble. I’m glad you like it.”
Yu Peirong could barely contain her delight.
She felt like she was eating the most nerve-racking meal of her life, like a villain facing her final meal before execution. It was an oddly humbling experience.
The meal took her a third longer than usual, as she slowed her pace to match the couple’s measured rhythm.
After lunch, Qi Bin loaded the dishes into the dishwasher, then called Yu Peirong over. The moment he spoke, the tight knot in her chest finally loosened.
Qi Bin had always been direct. He asked, “Peirong, wasn’t Xu Xiaoqi one of your company’s artists?”
After Yu Peirong confirmed, his eyes briefly flickered with complex emotions, but he soon smiled calmly. He patted her shoulder and looked her in the eye. Reflected in his gaze was her elegant Alpha face.
After learning about Xu Xiaoqi’s past, he had quietly paid attention, deeply sympathetic toward her experience, which was so similar to that of his wife.
But when he saw Xu Xiaoqi recover, a spark of hope was ignited.
He later found out it was Yu Peirong who had helped Xu Xiaoqi during her darkest moments. She had uncovered the truth, and it was not as the rumors had painted it. The real perpetrator, Yu Shang, was now in prison.
Yu Peirong had spared no effort in finding treatment and spent a great deal to help heal Xu Xiaoqi. Though Zhuang’s trauma was different and he had no expectation that she could recover completely, he was confident of one thing: Yu Peirong had done nothing wrong. She was not the kind of Alpha who toyed with Omegas.
She would be a good partner for Xiyao. He and Zhuang had no right to let their past grievances stand in the way of their daughter’s happiness.
When Qi Xiyao returned home, her father, with his sensitive Alpha instincts, immediately noticed something different.
Even with suppressants, he could smell it clearly.
It was the scent of an Omega who had been permanently marked by an Alpha. Their pheromones had blended into one harmonious note.
The result was a gentle mix of grapefruit tea and gardenia, forming a fragrant floral fruit blend.
As a father, he could not dictate his daughter’s future, but he could speak on behalf of her mother too.
He solemnly placed Qi Xiyao’s hand into Yu Peirong’s palm.
When they left Qi Xiyao’s home, Yu Peirong still found it hard to believe what had just happened.
Qi Xiyao stayed behind to speak with her mother for a few minutes before reappearing by the window, waving with a faint blush on her cheeks.
Yu Peirong looked up in confusion at Qi Xiyao, who suddenly grabbed her by the arm. Qi Xiyao had a soft smile on her face that she couldn’t hide, and her eyes held a hint of nervous anticipation.
After getting back into the car, Qi Xiyao tightly held Yu Peirong’s hand, then gently placed her palm over Yu Peirong’s wrist, feeling the familiar warmth of her pulse. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly.
On the drive home, Yu Peirong hummed a cheerful tune, clearly in a good mood.
She wasn’t particularly musically talented. She had tried learning to sing for a role once, but no matter how hard she studied, she never quite mastered it. In the end, she could only sing simple melodies just to amuse herself.
She had once appeared as a guest on a boy group talent show. While she gained an ear for distinguishing good from bad singing under the guidance of professional mentors, she lacked the technique herself.
Now she hummed a song she had learned long ago, just for fun. When she turned her head, she saw Qi Xiyao listening attentively, completely drawn in.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard you sing before,” Qi Xiyao said with a soft laugh, her eyes glimmering with warmth. “Try another one. I want to hear more.”
She paused, then added thoughtfully, “Sing me a lullaby.”
Yu Peirong hesitated for a moment. Then, as if something occurred to her, her eyes lit up and her voice carried a familiar hint of shy excitement.
“Wife… so, when can I marry you?”
Qi Xiyao gently pressed her soft fingertip against Yu Peirong’s lips, her eyes full of laughter.
“That depends on how you behave.”

The case from a few days ago felt like a brief interruption. The heavy burden that Qi Xiyao’s mother had been carrying seemed to finally ease, which was a small but meaningful relief.
Yu Peirong thought everything would quietly move on, that time would continue its steady rhythm as always.
In the following days, Qi Xiyao didn’t have any major work commitments. Yu Peirong had rented a separate office space in another part of town to serve as a training center for artists. Qi Xiyao had been attending acting classes there, often working late into the evening.
She genuinely loved acting. No matter how hard the training was or how tired she felt, she never once complained.
Since the two locations were far apart, Yu Peirong usually arranged for a driver to pick her up. But that day, the driver had taken a leave, so Qi Xiyao called a ride herself.
The early autumn night was calm. There were no buzzing cicadas like in summer and no soft patter of rain. Feeling drowsy, Qi Xiyao ordered a ride through the app. She was a little tired but didn’t like sleeping in cars, so she forced herself to stay awake and tried reviewing the notes she had made on a script.
The dim lighting inside the taxi and the gentle swaying of the car weren’t ideal for studying. After just a few lines, her vision began to blur and her head started to ache.
She yawned lazily and nearly bumped into the front seat. As she turned to glance at the driver, who had suddenly accelerated, a familiar scent reached her nose.
Qi Xiyao narrowed her eyes slightly, and a wave of alertness washed over her.
Just before losing consciousness, she let herself slump naturally onto the soft backseat. At the same time, her hand moved swiftly and quietly, dialing the emergency number Yu Peirong had preset for her.
