- Chapter 66.1 - Temporary Crisis
The next morning, Yu Peirong had just climbed out of bed when a phone call startled her. She blinked at the caller ID, saw who it was, and instantly sobered up before answering.
Ye An’s voice came through in a flustered rush.
“Rong, Sister Rong, please come quickly to Jinyue Huating. We’re all here waiting for you.”
Jinyue Huating?
That was an exclusive luxury hotel known for its privacy. Only high-profile individuals were allowed in, and it had never been involved in any scandals. If they were meeting there, it must be something serious. After a brief moment of thought, Yu Peirong got up to wash and get ready. She also took the opportunity to wake Qi Xiyao.
Although Qi Xiyao appeared to have fully recovered in recent days, Yu Peirong could tell that deep down she was still affected. Just because Qi Xiyao didn’t show her emotions openly didn’t mean she wasn’t suppressing anything.
In truth, emotional trauma is rarely healed in a short period of time.
Yu Peirong sighed quietly.
Judging by how frantic Ye An sounded, they must have found Lu Zhiyao’s weakness.
In the early morning, Jinyue Huating was quiet with few people around. Yu Peirong went straight to the room number that Ye An had given her. As soon as she walked in, she saw Xu Xiaoqi sitting there silently, flipping through some documents without any expression on her face.
Her slender fingers moved through a file folder and eventually pulled out an ID card. She held it between her fingers and looked down, lost in thought.
Yu Peirong immediately recognized the ID card. It belonged to Lu Zhiyao. Just as she was wondering how they had managed to get hold of it, Xu Xiaoqi raised her hand and gestured for silence.
From another room inside the presidential suite, muffled voices could be heard.
Two minutes later, Zhao Yuan stepped out, having just ended a phone call. Her steps were unsteady, and her face looked pale and unwell.
Yu Peirong quickly noticed the fresh wounds on her arm. They were hastily covered with gauze and clearly not treated properly. As Zhao Yuan moved, the gauze shifted slightly, revealing the deep and shocking cuts underneath.
“Zhao Yuan was at Lu Zhiyao’s house last night,” Xu Xiaoqi said suddenly.
Even Qi Xiyao, who had remained emotionally steady throughout, could not hide the slight flutter of her eyelashes. She looked up at Zhao Yuan, the quiet Omega who had barely spoken since arriving.
Standing in front of them now, Zhao Yuan had shed her reserved mask. She was naturally quiet and calm, not because she disliked others, but because she simply remained indifferent to most things. Yet now, a quiet fire had appeared in her eyes. It was faint, but impossible to ignore, and it seemed ready to ignite at any moment.
Only now did Yu Peirong understand that Zhao Yuan must have already learned something and had gone to confront Lu Zhiyao in a final gamble.
If Lu Zhiyao truly had a romantic relationship with her stepmother and had even developed feelings, then Zhao Yuan’s resemblance to that woman would have triggered both guilt and a false sense of familiarity. This would make Lu Zhiyao lower her guard.
The ones who knew the most about Lu Zhiyao’s past were Ye An and Xu Xiaoqi. If Yu Peirong and Ye An had not saved Xu Xiaoqi, and if they had not reconciled, none of this might have happened.
Yu Peirong’s arrival had altered the course of everyone’s life.
But there was no time to reflect on this. She found a seat and sat down quietly, ignoring the tea Ye An had poured for her. She looked up at Zhao Yuan, who was still standing by the door, lost in thought.
“Miss Zhao?” she asked gently.
Zhao Yuan returned to her senses.
She briefly described what had happened at Lu Zhiyao’s house the night before.
Zhao Yuan had medical knowledge, something she rarely spoke about. So when she realized something was wrong that evening, she had already come up with a plan.
She pretended to be weak and drowsy. It was an act, but she was indeed somewhat tired. To stay awake, she bit her tongue. When Lu Zhiyao checked on her and then went to shower, Zhao Yuan took the opportunity to search the house.
This was Lu Zhiyao’s real home. Things were not hidden too deeply. Thanks to Ye An’s earlier findings, which she had shared completely with Zhao Yuan, she was able to locate exactly what she needed.
Lu Zhiyao had dismissed the butler, likely to ensure privacy for what she planned to do. This gave Zhao Yuan the perfect chance.
The large villa was empty except for the two of them. But if the Alpha in the bathroom discovered her, there would be no escape. Zhao Yuan could not afford to search too long or too close to the bathroom. She skipped the nearby study and ran.
Lu Zhiyao was extremely cautious, far more clever and wealthy than Yu Shang.
Her house was equipped with smart technology. Her phone had security alerts connected to it. Zhao Yuan had no chance to trick her into handing it over.
The only lucky thing was that Lu Zhiyao had been lost in thought and did not notice the silent door alert.
But the front door had a fingerprint lock. Zhao Yuan knew she could not open it. To avoid being trapped, she made a split-second decision and climbed down from the second-floor pipe.
Thankfully, she did not injure herself badly. She only scraped her arm while climbing over the fence.
At the same time Zhao Yuan was climbing out, Lu Zhiyao was already dressing. When she returned to the room and found Zhao Yuan gone, she realized the prey had escaped. She immediately triggered the lock system on all doors.
Zhao Yuan had escaped just in time. The sound of the doors locking behind her still echoed in her mind. Even someone as calm as her had broken into a cold sweat.
Fortunately, the villa was not isolated. Zhao Yuan rode a bicycle down the main road. Lu Zhiyao did not chase her personally but instead called the butler, who lived behind the villa. The time it took for the butler to arrive gave Zhao Yuan the window she needed.
Even now, just thinking about it made Zhao Yuan dizzy. One misstep and she might not have made it out alive.
The first thing she took was the ID card. With it, she could do a lot.
Lu Zhiyao was not a fool. Once she realized Zhao Yuan had fled, she surely reported it missing that night. So Zhao acted quickly and used the ID to take care of several tasks.
She did not have time to read all the files carefully. She just grabbed the ones that looked important.
But the item that would shake Lu Zhiyao the most was a single photograph.
It was placed beside the bed, cleaned regularly, and kept in a well-protected frame.
The woman in the picture was named He Manlian.
He Manlian had met Lu Xu’ang at a nightclub. At the time, she was only a hostess, occasionally harassed by ill-mannered guests, but she had never been deeply involved with the wealthy.
Her face was unforgettable. At first, Lu Xu’ang was captivated by her appearance. Later, he unexpectedly fell completely under her spell and became her prisoner in love.
On the surface, she was just a rural girl who had come to the city for work. Desperate for money, she used her natural beauty to survive in the nightclub scene.
But her real story was much more tragic. Years earlier, her family had fallen apart because of loan sharks.
Her experience was similar to Qi Xiyao’s. Her parents had suffered long-term illness, and her brother, in desperation, had turned to gambling, hoping to quickly earn money to pay for their medical treatment. Instead, he fell into deeper debt.
Although he was capable and eventually worked for a major figure in the gambling world, high-interest loans were like a snowball that kept growing. Eventually, they crushed him.
He used his wages and commissions to help the family and continued borrowing to stay afloat. But one night, he was found dead in a narrow alley.
His death was quietly covered up and forgotten.
He Manlian lost her entire family. The killer was believed to be someone very powerful.
She was sent to an orphanage and later adopted by a regular family. As she grew up, she chose revenge.
Lu Xu’ang’s wife was a woman he had supported from humble beginnings. She was beautiful and refined, a traditional lady of high birth. But to an Alpha, being constantly controlled by such a wife became suffocating.
He Manlian, with her gentle nature, became his refuge. Under these circumstances, he succumbed to her soft affection.
She was a natural seductress, guiding him step by step into her trap. Even when his rebellious daughter got involved, she remained fearless.
But she had miscalculated. That day, she entered her heat.
The Alpha, in a moment of vengeful desire, bit her gland and marked her. It was a symbol of complete dominance over an Omega.
They spent a night consumed by passion, and she dealt her greatest revenge.
Before he could officially mark her, she used the trust he gave her and ended up in bed with his daughter. The next day, she stood by his side, dressed in a high-collared outfit, perfume covering the scent, playing the part of the gentle lover.
Sometimes she wondered, if she had revealed her intimacy with Lu Zhiyao right then, what would his reaction have been?
She had always been cautious around Lu Zhiyao, knowing she was like a wild wolf cub. A single mistake, and she could be destroyed.
One stormy night, Lu Zhiyao clung to her in fear. Thunder split the sky, and the world was shrouded in darkness. The brave Alpha trembled.
Lu Zhiyao grabbed her clothes and softly called her “Mom,” her face streaked with tears.
In that moment, He Manlian’s heart softened.
That moment of weakness cost her dearly. When she later saw Lu Zhiyao struggling in the water, crying for help, she hesitated briefly, then jumped in.
She never surfaced again.
Maybe she realized something was wrong. Maybe she had already given up. But in the end, she chose to save her.
Did she underestimate Lu Zhiyao’s cruelty? Or did she willingly embrace her end?
Only one person knew the answer. And that person is now lost forever, buried with the truth.
After realizing that her secret had been exposed, Lu Zhiyao had a short, hysterical outburst. Then, she calmed down and called Zhao Yuan using a new phone number.
Zhao Yuan hung up.
Then she called back.
On the other end of the line, Lu Zhiyao spoke to her in a calm and chilling voice.
Lu Zhiyao’s voice was calm, the kind of quiet that comes just before a violent storm. Her tone was low and laced with a dangerous allure.
“If you want to report me, go ahead. Use those worthless things you’ve got. At most, I’ll pay a bit of money. That’s a small price. I can afford it. It’s up to you.”
With just that one sentence, Zhao Yuan knew the evidence she had wasn’t of much value. After all, it made sense. As the daughter of a casino tycoon, having records of things like drinking, gambling, and visiting brothels wasn’t exactly shocking.
Zhao glanced at the materials. They were all records of petty indulgences, nothing that would get a powerful person into real trouble. An ordinary person might be detained for a few days, but someone like Lu Zhiyao could easily resolve it with money.
Without hesitation, Zhao Yuan ended the call, then called Xu Xiaoqi before turning off her phone.
Ye An, however, had a different idea. She said that sending a photo to Lu Xu’ang would be enough.
They sent an anonymous email to him. Naturally, Lu Xu’ang was a busy man and might not even see it. The butler might delete it as spam before it ever reached him.
Ye An assured them that she had a way to make sure Lu Zhiyao’s father found out.
After hearing this, Zheng Xiuxue frowned.
“Lu Zhiyao isn’t stupid. She’ll definitely report the ID as lost. Once that happens, the ID in our hands will be nothing but a useless piece of plastic. But afterward, Miss Zhao will likely become her target for revenge…”
Before she could finish speaking, Yu Peirong suddenly thought of something.
Her eyes lit up. “No need. We just have to let Lu Xu’ang’s former in-laws find out about this.”
Ye An didn’t quite understand. But because of Yu Litian’s past connection with Lu Xu’ang, and since Yu Litian had gone to great lengths to curry favor with him, Ye An had established some ties with the former in-law family. She quickly followed Yu Peirong’s instructions and informed them about the relationship between Lu Zhiyao and her stepmother.
After that, they did little else. They waited. Two days later, the calm before the storm shattered.
The first to act was Lu Xu’ang’s former in-law family.
Although they weren’t as wealthy or powerful as the Lu family, Lu Xu’ang had always treated them decently, perhaps out of guilt. He visited once or twice a year and looked after them in small ways.
They had helped him in his early years. His former father-in-law was no less successful than Yu Litian and truly cherished his only daughter. Because Lu Xu’ang had carefully crafted an image of deep affection, and had been attentive to his wife while she was alive, the in-laws never suspected a thing.
He had also hidden the Omega very well. The former in-laws had no idea he was keeping a mistress. When they found out, they were furious. Their daughter had barely passed away, and he was already involved with another Omega, leading Lu Zhiyao astray in the process.
They knew their granddaughter wasn’t exactly a good person, but she was still their daughter’s flesh and blood. No matter how flawed she was, she was part of them. So they blamed Lu Xu’ang entirely, believing he had corrupted her.
What enraged them most was the suspicion that Lu Xu’ang had already been having an affair while his wife was still alive.
They sued him for infidelity and publicly cut ties with Lu Zhiyao.
Lu Xu’ang may have eventually uncovered He Manlian’s true identity. However, when her family was destroyed years ago, she had been just a little girl. No one thought much of it. Her adoptive family was poorly educated and knew nothing of her past. Over the years, Lu Xu’ang had mastered both lawful and unlawful dealings, and so he never saw her as a threat.
What he did not realize was that He Manlian had always been precocious and had a sharp memory. As she grew up, she investigated her past and found links pointing back to him.
At the same time, the former in-law family launched their own investigation into He Manlian. They began digging into her brother’s death and even uncovered records of medicine she had purchased.
Although He Manlian had acted with great care, no plan is completely flawless.
Before every intimate encounter with Lu Zhiyao, she had taken short-term contraceptives. Someone else had bought them on her behalf. That account, once traced, revealed past purchases of psychiatric medication.
Lu Zhiyao’s mother had fallen ill while pregnant with her. It seemed to involve a heart condition along with some mental health issues.
At that time, He Manlian had gone through several layers of connections and bribed someone to secretly drug Lu Zhiyao’s mother. The substance was colorless, tasteless, and extremely hard to detect, pushing the woman toward her demise.
He Manlian’s goal had likely been to replace the original wife early, using that position to pursue her deeper investigation into the past. She may have seen no other path to justice.
It was unclear whether Lu Xu’ang’s wife had truly been innocent, but she had indeed been involved in managing some of her husband’s gray-market businesses.
The truth, once exposed, sent shockwaves throughout the city.
Due to the seriousness of the matter, Lu Xu’ang was soon questioned by authorities. Even higher levels of power took notice, launching an investigation into his illegal dealings.
Much that had been hidden began to surface.
