- Chapter 58.1 - Hands-On Teaching
A few days earlier, inside SK Bar
The rotating light ball in the center of the dance floor cast flickering beams of color across the room, scattering dazzling fragments over the floor. The atmosphere was chaotic and wild.
Lu Zhiyao leaned back on a sofa in a tight, revealing dress, a cigarette between her fingers. On either side of her nestled two beautiful Omegas. One of them was even kneeling on her lap, leaning in to light her own cigarette from Lu Zhiyao’s. Their eyes flirted, and Lu Zhiyao’s hands roamed freely. They were just short of doing something indecent right there in public.
Sitting nearby, Yu Shang was silently fuming. Watching their interaction made his stomach churn with revulsion.
There was a fresh scar on his face. It was shallow and small, but still a blemish on an otherwise handsome appearance.
About ten days ago, Lu Zhiyao had found him in a casino. A charming Omega dealer had tapped him on the shoulder, giving him a wink and suggesting he pay his dues for the evening.
But Yu Shang had become the poorest gambler there. He had gone all in, throwing away everything except his most basic living expenses, which were nowhere near enough to get by.
For someone used to spending freely, the amount left was a drop in the bucket.
Unable to repay the high debts, and with the environment pushing him deeper into the hole, he was one step away from total ruin.
Lu Zhiyao had suddenly appeared and pulled him out of there, along with his mother.
During this “escape,” his relationship with his beloved mother had nearly fallen apart.
The main reason was their disagreement over the Yu family. Yu Shang eventually realized that his mother might have been trying to push him into direct conflict with Yu Litian, severing all possibility of return.
He had, in fact, acted on it. But Yu Shang wasn’t a fool. He soon realized the consequences he had brought upon himself.
In his eyes, Yu Peirong had been the one who gained everything while the rest of them tore each other apart.
He believed she was just like him, doing everything she could to seize Yu Litian’s fortune. If she could take full control of the company, that would be the best outcome for her.
He hated her to his bones, but could do nothing.
Then Lu Zhiyao offered him a deal. She suggested they work together to bring Yu Peirong down, with the condition that whatever gains they achieved would be split.
But Yu Shang waited and waited. Lu Zhiyao, that spoiled heiress, spent all her time playing with Omegas or on her way to meet one. She seemed completely uninterested in any actual plans.
Yu Shang couldn’t stand it anymore. Seeing Yu Peirong’s career rising steadily, and the way she had even won over the girl of his dreams, filled him with bitter jealousy. That Omega was supposed to be his.
Now, his Omega was in Yu Peirong’s arms. He had even seen CP fans posting countless intimate photos of Yu Peirong and Qi Xiyao, completely unbothered by how affectionate they were in public.
A few days earlier, Zhou Qianjin had gone out on an errand. On her way home, someone dragged her into an alley and beat her savagely. They targeted her weak spots, slashing her gland with a knife and breaking her leg before fleeing the scene.
Yu Shang, of course, didn’t dare go to the police. Zhou Qianjin lay in a private hospital bed, cursing fate and especially her useless son, pushing Yu Shang to his breaking point.
Using Lu Zhiyao’s money, he bought Qi Xiyao’s schedule from a tabloid reporter.
After staking out her location for days, he finally saw an opportunity and didn’t hesitate to slam down the gas pedal.
Yu Peirong had been chatting casually with Qi Xiyao when she suddenly noticed a car behind them swerving aggressively in their direction. She immediately switched off the autopilot and grabbed the wheel, steering hard to the side.
When the car behind continued to chase them, she realized they had encountered a madman.
She swore under her breath.
Back in her old world, she had dealt with plenty of obsessive fans. Some had hidden in her hotel closets. Others had followed her relentlessly. Some had even tried to block her with their cars in a fit of twisted obsession.
Clearly, this was one of those crazies.
Yu Peirong’s driving skills were solid. She accelerated sharply, trying to put distance between them, but the other car shot forward at an illegal speed.
Qi Xiyao clutched the passenger-side handle tightly. The two cars brushed past each other dangerously. She turned to glance at the driver, afraid they might be holding a weapon, but didn’t dare lower the window. In the brief moment when the cars aligned, she recognized the driver.
“It’s Yu Shang!”
Yu Peirong narrowed her eyes. The moment the words left Qi Xiyao’s mouth, she floored the gas pedal, speeding up with all she had.
Their cars collided at the edge, scraping paint. Yu Peirong gritted her teeth, warned Qi Xiyao to hold on, then suddenly swerved the wheel.
Yu Shang had planned to force them against the bridge railing and the pedestrian path, ramming the car forward with full force. But he didn’t expect Yu Peirong to switch speeds so unpredictably, throwing him off.
Qi Xiyao, heart pounding, looked back in time to see Yu Shang pull a dangerous maneuver. He executed a drifting U-turn at lightning speed, cutting them off completely.
The impact from behind was brutal. Yu Peirong’s whole body went numb. Pain radiated from her hands on the steering wheel and spread throughout her limbs.
The airbag deployed with a bang. Just as the car was about to fly over the edge of the bridge, Yu Peirong reached out instinctively and grabbed Qi Xiyao’s hand.
She had only one thought.
She could swim. Qi Xiyao could not. If they fell, her first move would be to unbuckle the seatbelt and save her.
Though it had all happened in a matter of seconds, it felt endless.
The car teetered at the bridge’s edge, but luckily had not fallen.
While Yu Shang was still repositioning his vehicle, Yu Peirong quickly grabbed her phone and called the police, giving them their location as clearly and briefly as possible.
Yu Shang refocused, preparing to strike again.
Yu Peirong unbuckled her seatbelt and turned to Qi Xiyao.
“Get out of the car!”
It looked like a risky move. Inside the car, they still had airbags and some protection. Outside, a direct hit could be fatal.
Yu Shang seemed on the verge of a full breakdown. Any provocation might drive him to kill them both.
But Yu Peirong understood. Yu Shang’s real target was her, not Qi Xiyao.
Seeing that Qi Xiyao was uninjured, she gave her a few quick instructions. Qi Xiyao wasn’t the kind of fragile Omega who needed to rely on an Alpha for survival. She immediately jumped out of the car and circled to the driver’s seat as Yu Peirong stepped out.
Yu Peirong then called Ye An.
Yu Shang saw her get out and ground his teeth in fury. His eyes were bloodshot, and he shouted her name. He had wanted to see fear in her eyes, but there was none.
Even now, Yu Peirong looked calm and composed, like she had never taken him seriously.
That look enraged him most. She had changed into someone completely unfamiliar. The once-manipulable girl had become a force of her own, impossible to control.
The contrast shook him. He stared at her like she was some kind of unknowable monster. The killing intent in his eyes surged.
As the resolve to end her formed in his mind, Yu Shang targeted the woman standing a few steps away and pressed the gas pedal.
At that moment, Yu Peirong turned on speakerphone, volume to maximum, and hurled the phone toward him.
Ye An’s voice exploded from the device, raw and anguished.
“Yu Qishang!”
Yu Shang froze.
For a few seconds, his face twisted with conflicting emotions. His breathing grew heavy. His gaze shifted back to Yu Peirong, filled with disbelief, as if he had seen a ghost.
His lips trembled.
“You… you’re…”
Yu Peirong gave him no answer.
What responded instead was the sound of police sirens drawing close.
It was the holiday season, but law enforcement was still fully staffed. This kind of case was rare, and within minutes, officers arrived at the scene.
Yu Shang, dazed, tried to escape but was quickly restrained by experienced officers.
Yu Peirong’s car was towed for repair. She stood near the riverbank, rubbing her sore arm.
The airbag had struck her hard, leaving her arm aching. The wind along the river was sharp, slicing through the air with a bitter chill. Snowflakes danced down and stung her face like tiny needles.
After several minutes, Yu Peirong finally picked up Ye An’s call again. She retrieved her cracked phone and held it tightly in her hand.
“Yu Qishang was his original name,” Ye An explained later, sitting in a quiet café. Snow drifted down outside the window. She spoke to Qi Xiyao and Yu Peirong, her tone calm and distant.
“‘Qishang’ was just a nickname. Later, he changed it officially to Yu Shang.”
The scene felt strangely surreal. Ye An said that as a child, Yu Shang hadn’t been like this. Back then, he had been a clingy little kid, always running behind her, calling her “sister.”
But as he grew older, under misguided adult influence, the relationship between them fell apart.
His behavior toward the original Yu Peirong had always been strange. He wasn’t kind by any means, but he hadn’t always been so cruel either.
It was as if he believed she was foolish and easy to control and because of that, he had preserved a sliver of old affection and stopped short of total destruction.
Ye An never imagined Yu Shang would go as far as trying to kill someone.
That day, Yu Peirong and Qi Xiyao spent hours at the police station, completing several statements. Once Yu Shang was arrested and investigated thoroughly, it exposed far more than anyone expected.
Among the many offenses, he had been exploiting Omega entertainers. He wasn’t personally involved in every incident, but he treated them as rewards. He sent attractive Omegas and Betas to the beds of Alphas in exchange for loyalty.
This created a system where those Alphas believed they could benefit endlessly by staying close to Young Master Yu.
His entire method relied on exploiting Omegas to build a tight circle of Alpha supporters. Beyond that, he had misappropriated company funds, speculated in stocks, bought shares recklessly, and was even linked to drug trafficking.
The drug-related crimes were uncovered by the police during a deeper investigation. Yu Peirong had only noticed issues with his financial movements and had not yet uncovered the full picture. However, because Yu Shang had committed so many crimes, the police prioritized his case.
This time, without Yu Litian’s connections and protection, the once-pampered heir finally faced the consequences of his actions.
He was taken into custody, and as more and more evidence surfaced, fear and panic slowly consumed him.
Lu Zhiyao disappeared without a word. She had no interest in saving him now.
By that point, if Yu Shang still didn’t realize he had been used, then he really had lost all sense. He was furious, but there was nothing he could do.
Soon after, he was formally indicted and imprisoned. News of how he had framed multiple artists spread quickly online. Marketing accounts launched all kinds of speculation. Some even accused Xu Xiaoqi of secretly orchestrating everything.
Before visiting her cousin’s house, Yu Peirong invited Ye An to come along.
At first, Ye An was hesitant. Qi Xiyao stepped in and suggested a simple story. They would say Ye An was a close friend spending the New Year away from home and had nowhere else to go, so she came along to visit.
Zheng Xiuxue, Peirong’s younger cousin, had a cheerful and welcoming personality. Her family was warm and easygoing, so they didn’t mind guests.
Especially since Yu Peirong rarely visited her mother’s side of the family anymore, Xiuxue was thrilled to welcome her back. She agreed without hesitation.
“We have plenty of rooms. Just bring her along,” she said excitedly over the phone. Then, lowering her voice, she asked playfully, “Is your wife coming too?”
By now, Yu Peirong and Xiuxue had grown close. Knowing her cousin’s lively nature, she teased her in return.
“You just want to see Qi Xiyao, don’t you?”
Xiuxue gasped in mock outrage. “Don’t call her that. I’ll tell on you. Her name is Sister-in-law!”
Yu Peirong laughed heartily.
Ye An, seated beside her, looked slightly awkward. Her gaze lowered, and her fingers pressed hard against the rim of the teacup. The heat turned her knuckles red, but she barely noticed. Lost in thought, she sighed quietly.
Yu Peirong continued chatting with Xiuxue. Her personality was easygoing, and Xiuxue was a sweet talker. In no time, they were getting along like real sisters.
Qi Xiyao glanced at Ye An and immediately understood what was on her mind. After a moment, she gently pressed her fingers on Ye An’s shoulder.
“If you want to do something, then do it. Don’t leave regrets for yourself or others.”
Her voice was soft and warm, but it struck Ye An like a hammer to the chest. After a few seconds, Ye An looked up, her lips trembling.
She hadn’t been idle recently.
Since that conversation with Yu Peirong, she had been thinking of ways to get Lu Zhiyao’s attention again.
Compared to Yu Peirong, Ye An understood Lu Zhiyao better. She had dealt with her directly and knew her preferences. That gave her an advantage.
Lu Zhiyao didn’t care whether someone was Alpha, Omega, or Beta. She always said that if she liked someone, no one could stop her.
Ye An had no intention of actually giving herself to Lu Zhiyao. She only wanted to get close enough to subtly mention certain things.
As an unknown wedding dress designer, it made no sense for her to have insider knowledge. That quickly raised Lu Zhiyao’s suspicion. But Ye An managed to explain things away and earned her trust.
With Lu Zhiyao’s help, she located Yu Shang and laid out the risks and benefits. She persuaded Lu Zhiyao to help Yu Litian take Yu Shang down.
Yu Shang had always been a thorny issue for Yu Litian.
On one hand, he hated Yu Shang and his mother deeply. On the other hand, Yu Shang held secrets that could ruin him. Yu Litian didn’t dare go too far.
