- Chapter 45 - Fainting
The sound of water inside the bathroom gradually faded, but there was no movement from Yu Peirong.
After ending her phone call, Qi Xiyao casually browsed her phone for a while. She should have left by now, but her heart was racing for no clear reason. Something just didn’t feel right.
A few minutes passed. Qi Xiyao couldn’t help but call out cautiously toward the bathroom.
“Rong-jie?”
There was no reply.
A sharp sense of worry struck her. She quickly stood up and walked to the door, knocking gently. The frosted glass door completely obscured the view inside, and she couldn’t see anything. When she received no response after several knocks, her hands began to tremble. Driven by an ominous feeling, she pushed the door open.
Yu Peirong was half-lying in the bathtub, a towel loosely draped over her body. Her head rested weakly against the edge of the tub, and her eyes were tightly shut. She appeared completely unconscious.
The water gently rippled around her, softly brushing against her skin.
Qi Xiyao’s breathing tightened. In that moment, she had no interest in admiring Yu Peirong’s appearance and didn’t feel the slightest embarrassment. She immediately reached out, trying to lift her from the tub, but her foot slipped on the wet floor and she almost fell in.
She steadied herself and touched Yu Peirong’s forehead. It was burning hot, but it didn’t seem to be a symptom of her special cycle.
There was no scent of pheromones in the air. Everything smelled clean and sterile.
Qi Xiyao was considered quite strong for an Omega, but Yu Peirong was tall and slender, noticeably taller than most women, and nearly half a head taller than her. She could barely hold her up. After draining the water from the tub bit by bit, she helped Yu Peirong sit up.
Her body was bare beneath the towel. When Qi Xiyao felt the warmth of skin against her own, she blushed deeply and her heart began to race. Still, she remained respectful and quickly grabbed a bath towel to cover her, shielding most of her upper body.
She carefully helped Yu Peirong out of the bathroom, but no matter how she called her name, there was no response. With no other option, she laid her on the bed.
Yu Peirong’s eyes remained shut. Even her breath felt warm and heavy. Her skin was still damp, so Qi Xiyao hurried to pull the covers over her.
“Rong-jie?”
She called her again, anxiety rising. She gently pushed her shoulder, even though she wasn’t expecting much of a reaction. Yu Peirong’s exposed collarbone was pale like smooth jade, gently defined with a slight dip where beads of water clung, soft and elegant.
But this was not the time to admire her. Qi Xiyao quickly reached for her phone to call the doctor, but in her panic, she accidentally knocked over the glass on the nightstand. It fell and shattered with a sharp, clear sound.
The noise echoed through the room, and in that instant, Yu Peirong’s eyes opened. It was as if she had been startled awake by the sound.
Her head was still spinning. She didn’t know what had happened. Seeing Qi Xiyao already on the phone with the doctor, she didn’t try to stop her.
Qi Xiyao briefly explained the situation, then hung up. Her worried gaze lingered on Yu Peirong’s face before she stood up, intending to leave and give her space to change clothes.
But Yu Peirong reached out and gently held her wrist. Her grip was much weaker than usual, her breath heavy, and her voice hoarse.
“Don’t go,” she murmured. “Help me get dressed, Yaoyao.”
Yu Peirong truly had no strength left. It felt as if every bit of energy had been stripped away from her body.
Even when Qi Xiyao, cheeks flushed, walked over and retrieved clean clothes from the wardrobe, Yu Peirong no longer felt shy. She leaned against her shoulder for support.
Maybe she had just been too exhausted lately. Qi Xiyao thought back to the past few days. After coming off that intense survival reality show on a deserted island, Yu Peirong had immediately plunged into the conflict with the Yu family. She had stirred the pot while manipulating them into turning against each other.
The outcome had been in her favor, with the only loose end being Yu Litian. But she had planned to leave him to Yu Shang and Zhou Qianjin. One was his favored son, and the other his close companion. They likely knew more of his secrets than she ever would.
Backed into a corner, those two wouldn’t show him any mercy.
Yu Peirong rubbed her aching temples, resting her chin on Qi Xiyao’s shoulder. She could feel the woman’s hands trembling slightly as she helped her put on a bra. Once skillful and precise, Qi Xiyao’s hands were now clumsy with nervousness, and her face was so red it looked like it might catch fire.
Qi Xiyao finally breathed a sigh of relief after fastening the bra.
She continued helping her dress, her soft fingertips brushing against bare skin. The heat between them made her heart beat wildly. When she helped her put on her pants, Yu Peirong seemed to regain some clarity. She slowly stood up with Qi Xiyao’s support.
The private doctor lived nearby. After hearing it was an emergency, he arrived in just over ten minutes and was already waiting at the door.
Qi Xiyao brought him in.
After examining her thoroughly, the doctor could only shake his head. He found nothing abnormal.
There were no signs of poisoning, and she wasn’t suffering from overwork. Her body was in good condition. Even if she was tired, it shouldn’t have caused her to collapse so suddenly. At most, she needed some rest.
Yu Peirong still felt something was off, but she trusted the doctor completely. She smiled and saw him out. After he left, Qi Xiyao approached with a concerned look, as if she wanted to say something. But before she could speak, Yu Peirong interrupted her.
“Maybe I’ve just been too tired lately and haven’t slept well. A good nap will help. Don’t worry.”
Qi Xiyao nodded, though her lips were pressed together with concern. She quietly closed the door and left the room.
Alpha bodies have strong self-healing abilities. Yu Peirong turned off her phone and slept deeply through the night. By the next morning, she felt much better. Her condition had improved significantly.
Only after Qi Xiyao confirmed several times that she would not faint again did she finally relax. Feeling relieved, she happily made a delicious breakfast with her own hands.
Today happened to be the day they had planned to visit the art exhibition. Yu Peirong had taken the day off from work to rest, so she accompanied Qi Xiyao to the gallery to unwind.
Because it was a weekday and they arrived early, the gallery wasn’t crowded. The indoor heating was on, the temperature was just right, and the spacing between the artworks was comfortable.
The first exhibit featured works from an abstract artist. Yu Peirong had never been particularly fond of abstract art, though the original owner of her body seemed to have loved it.
In her office, she had seen two paintings hung on the wall. One was by a famous abstract painter from this world, and the other was a simple landscape, depicting a starlit sea under the night sky.
The colors created by the brushstrokes were rich and vivid. Even someone like her, who didn’t understand art, felt refreshed and at peace just by looking at it. It truly felt like being transported to the seaside.
So after Yu Peirong reorganized the original office space, she left both of those paintings exactly where they were. She didn’t take them down. Because of that, she believed that the original version of herself wasn’t entirely ordinary. There must have been at least a touch of appreciation for refined art in her.
“My favorite artist is Mr. Mida. His style is very unique. He only needs a few strokes to outline the shape of an object. His landscapes often feature the ocean, the sky, and forests. They always feel very calming to me,” Qi Xiyao said softly as she held Yu Peirong’s hand and led her away from the abstract art section toward another area.
“I don’t really understand painting, but every time I see his work, I feel at peace. It’s very healing. Some people even buy his art to help with mental health issues. I remember Xu Xiaoqi really likes his paintings too.”
They turned a corner into a long hallway. Along both sides, paintings hung under soft lighting, their shapes and outlines clearly visible. This was Mr. Mida’s dedicated exhibition space. It was quiet, with very few visitors. Only one woman stood at the far end of the hallway. She had a tall frame and wore a thick khaki-colored coat.
As soon as she heard Qi Xiyao’s voice, the woman froze for a moment, almost as if she had been shocked by electricity. Then, instinctively, she turned her head in their direction.
Although she quickly averted her gaze, Yu Peirong’s eyesight was sharp. She immediately recognized the familiar face.
“Ye An?”
When that name was called out, Ye An hesitated for a moment. After a short pause, she finally looked up and forced a stiff smile at them. Her face was pale, her smile hollow. She looked like someone who had just been caught red-handed.
The moment Yu Peirong met Ye An’s eyes, an uneasy feeling rose in her chest. The last time she felt this kind of discomfort was when that obsessive illegitimate daughter chased her all the way home, shouting crazily about wanting to marry her.
Now, the same feeling returned, as though she was being watched and there was nothing she could do about it.
What made it worse was that Ye An’s attention seemed to be fixed on Qi Xiyao.
Yu Peirong didn’t know why, but she had always trusted her instincts. Normally, she didn’t judge people based on first impressions, but the first time she saw Ye An, she had felt an instant and deep sense of discomfort.
She had never liked Ye An from the beginning. If it hadn’t been absolutely necessary for Xu Xiaoqi to receive treatment, and if Ye An hadn’t been such a high compatibility match as an Alpha, Yu Peirong would never have allowed her to be involved in Xu Xiaoqi’s care.
Even so, she had already made up her mind to observe Ye An closely during the treatment process. The moment she saw anything suspicious, she would immediately put a stop to it.
A wave of anger began to rise in Yu Peirong’s heart. Just as she stepped forward, ready to confront Ye An face to face, a wave of dizziness hit her with full force. Her entire body was overwhelmed in an instant.
It felt like she was being pulled into an unstoppable whirlpool. Yu Peirong stumbled forward unsteadily. At the same time, Ye An suddenly turned and ran, as if she were afraid of something.
Just before she completely lost consciousness, Yu Peirong finally heard the long-silent system’s cold mechanical voice echo in her mind.
It shouted with a harsh, piercing tone, creating a wave of sound that crashed through her thoughts like a storm. Her consciousness, already drifting like an island in the sea, was dragged into an endless, dark abyss.
