- Chapter 42 - The Truth (2)
The audio file was over half an hour long. Yu Peirong listened to it without skipping a word and was able to piece together what had happened.
Xu Xiaoqi had fainted and remained unconscious while the original Yu confronted Yu Shang. She wanted to accuse him but had no evidence and was soon driven to the brink by his calculated words.
It was unclear if there was a third person in the room. The recording obviously wasn’t made by either of them, since the original Yu didn’t seem smart enough in that moment to think of using such a method.
Yu Shang repeatedly emphasized that Xu Xiaoqi liked the original Yu. That made her even more distressed and hysterical. Later, the confrontation turned physical. The original Yu injured Yu Shang, who did not retaliate but simply sneered and said, “You should get some rest.”
This memory must have been too painful for the original Yu to handle, which was likely why she, like Xu Xiaoqi, had completely blocked it out.
After listening, Yu Peirong suddenly had a strange but oddly logical thought.
It was clear Yu Shang did not like Xu Xiaoqi. He would never take part in something illegal just to harm her directly because he always made sure there was no evidence left behind.
Likewise, it seemed unlikely that the original Yu was truly infatuated with Qi Xiyao. From the audio, she didn’t sound like someone entirely cold or emotionless. If she had loved someone, she probably would have been gentle and kind to them.
So perhaps, just maybe, the original Yu and Xu Xiaoqi had mutual feelings—unspoken or not—and Yu Shang deliberately orchestrated this incident to drive the original Yu over the edge, to push her into irredeemable madness.
And the original Yu, in turn, lashed out at Qi Xiyao, trying to fight Yu Shang with one final, self-destructive blow.
Just thinking about this possibility made Yu Peirong feel sick.
She didn’t have much sympathy for the original Yu, who had still done unforgivable things in the end. The ones who truly deserved pity were Xu Xiaoqi and Qi Xiyao—innocent people caught in the storm created by two twisted siblings. But the root cause of everything was Yu Shang. If he hadn’t harmed Xu Xiaoqi to begin with, perhaps the original Yu wouldn’t have spiraled into insanity and gone on to commit such irreversible acts.
Qi Xiyao hadn’t said a word through all of this. After listening to the entire recording, she simply stared at Yu Peirong.
She had questions. Her eyes were full of confusion and unspoken thoughts, but when she looked into Yu Peirong’s red-rimmed eyes, she swallowed them back down.
This was the first time she had seen Yu Peirong wear an expression like that.
Her eyes were burning with tears, her breathing was heavy, and her lower lip had been bitten open without her even realizing it. A thin line of blood slid down her chin toward her collarbone. Qi Xiyao gently wiped it away.
In that moment, she seemed to understand something she didn’t need to ask.
“Go to sleep. It’s late now.”
Her voice was soft, barely louder than a whisper.
When Yu Peirong didn’t move, Qi Xiyao got up and began drying her damp hair with a towel. She patted her shoulder gently, signaling that it was time for bed.
Qi Xiyao never had trouble falling asleep and was out in no time. Yu Peirong, on the other hand, lay awake in bed, staring at the ceiling.
After a long time, she finally reached for her phone.
Yu Peirong wore her Bluetooth earphones and listened to Xu Xiaoqi’s songs all night. Her discography wasn’t extensive, but the one that recently became popular was called “Star of the Night Voyage.”
This song had a unique style, standing out from current musical trends. Its music video abandoned the flashy effects Xu Xiaoqi had once been known for and instead took a more healing, story-driven route.
The story was about two people in ancient times, each burdened with secrets, who became pen pals by chance. When they finally met, they embraced each other’s flaws without judgment and became true friends.
If she remembered correctly, the original Yu was credited as a music advisor on this project. She didn’t have any formal training in music, so she was likely more of a muse or inspiration behind the scenes.
After thinking things through, Yu Peirong messaged her assistant and asked if the IT department had someone reliable who could recover old chat logs.
Her assistant was efficient. By morning, he had found someone. She sent over the account details right away.
She intentionally woke up late and, as expected, found a bank transfer from Yu Litian waiting for her.
Since it was rare for his daughter to ask for money, Yu Litian wanted to make a good impression. He wired ten million directly to her account, saying it was just for fun money. Yu Peirong immediately transferred half of it to Qi Xiyao in front of him, and Yu Litian didn’t say a word.
Since he was being so cooperative, Yu Peirong figured it was time to reveal some things before he got too comfortable.
While enjoying a rich brunch, she casually suggested they hang out at the family’s private bar that afternoon and invite some “atmosphere makers.”
Yu Litian, terrified she would really kick Yu Shang out of the company, readily agreed and even said he’d cover all the expenses. Yu Peirong generously accepted his apology for past neglect and clung to his arm like a loving daughter, even asking her stepmother to stay with them.
Her stepmother’s face clearly said she’d rather be anywhere else. She said she had a spa appointment, but under Yu Litian’s persuasion, she grudgingly stayed. She didn’t say another word to Yu Peirong after that.
That tense silence lasted until the hired entertainment group arrived. When they walked in, her stepmother’s expression changed dramatically.
One of the male models had fair skin and a charming smile. As he entered, he politely bowed to everyone and began pouring drinks with practiced grace.
When he poured a drink for her stepmother, he let the back of his hand brush her arm several times, his eyes full of unspoken suggestion.
Qi Xiyao noticed this subtle interaction and glanced at Yu Peirong.
Yu Peirong, struggling to keep a straight face, couldn’t speak aloud and instead texted her:
“I recognize that guy. He’s a male escort. Someone once tried to use him to bribe me into sleeping with them.”
Qi Xiyao looked at her in surprise.
It wasn’t even that long ago. When Yu Peirong returned to the company, she had to attend several social functions. One executive tried to use this model to tempt her, but she wasn’t interested in the slightest.
