I Transmigrated and Already Had a Wife - Chapter 20
“Mother, in the future, please mention things from the past less often in front of Wanwan. Don’t let her remember them and become sad again.”
“You rascal, is your mother that kind of person?” Mrs. Jiang glared at her, holding back her grief. “The moment I bought her, I was prepared to cherish her like my own daughter. But you, how many times have I told you to treat her well? How have you been doing that?”
Jiang Zhou: “…”
There really was a secret.
She could no longer suppress the excitement in her heart, but she forced herself to remain calm and said, “How have I been treating her?”
“How dare you even ask.” The subject suddenly changed. “It’s better not to mention those things of yours. Just treat her well from now on.”
Mrs. Jiang patted her shoulder and turned to go back to her room.
Jiang Zhou was left alone, wind-swept and confused.
What was that?
She didn’t say anything at all.
Jiang Zhou felt resentful, and the heart that had leaped to her throat instantly sank back into her chest.
However, she could now be absolutely certain that the original owner did not like Lin Muwan. All she had to do was set Lin Muwan straight.
How could that scumbag woman compare to her?
Suddenly, her heart was filled with fighting spirit, and she had long forgotten her principles.
She hummed a little tune while cooking.
She made noodles, stir-fried some rabbit meat, and a dish of green vegetables. The aroma of the food could be smelled from afar.
When she finished cooking, she knocked on the door: “Wife, come out to eat.”
After a while, Lin Muwan’s clear and cold voice came from the room: “I’m not hungry right now. You and Mother eat.” Her voice was slightly hoarse.
Jiang Zhou frowned, the hand poised to knock on the door froze mid-air, clenching into a fist and then relaxing, repeating this several times. She calmed herself down, pushed the door open, and saw Lin Muwan leaning against the bed frame, her eyes red—she had clearly been crying just now.
Seeing her enter, Lin Muwan was taken aback and turned her face to the side.
Jiang Zhou’s heart tightened. In all the time she had known Lin Muwan, this was the first time she had seen any other expression on her face, and she had cried. Jiang Zhou quickly walked over, squatted by the bed, placed both hands on Lin Muwan’s knees, and asked with concern, “What’s wrong?”
Lin Muwan forced a smile that looked somewhat strained.
She shook her head.
“Should I bring the food into the room so we can eat?”
After the new house was built, Jiang Zhou had hired the village carpenter to make furniture. Now, every room had a table, four round stools, and a wardrobe.
Lin Muwan would secretly hide and cry; this was something she hadn’t expected. But then again, Lin Muwan was just a young girl who had just turned eighteen. She should have been in the prime of her youth, doted upon by her parents and loved by a future husband. Instead, her family suddenly encountered disaster, and she must be heartbroken.
Thinking of this, Jiang Zhou felt a pang of distress. If she hadn’t carelessly mentioned the ‘official kiln,’ she wouldn’t have reopened Lin Muwan’s wound again.
Ultimately, this whole thing was her fault.
She looked at Lin Muwan’s reddened eyes, which were still misty.
Just as she was about to speak, Lin Muwan said first: “I’m really not hungry. Go eat with Mother.”
Jiang Zhou felt guilty. She stood up and pulled Lin Muwan to the round table, her actions a bit forceful. She placed both hands on Lin Muwan’s shoulders. “Sit here and wait for me. You have to give me face today. I specially cooked my best dishes. Mother has already gone back to her room to eat, so it’s just me. You keep me company.”
Lin Muwan pursed her lips and didn’t speak again.
Jiang Zhou went to the kitchen, separated some of the food and took it to Mrs. Jiang’s room, and brought the rest back to her own room.
Back in the room, Lin Muwan maintained her posture, staring blankly. Seeing her return, she snapped out of it, curved her lips slightly, and her expression looked a little forlorn.
Jiang Zhou sighed internally. She placed the food on the table and served rice for Lin Muwan. “Hurry and try it, it’s getting a little cool.”
Lin Muwan nodded, lowered her head, and began to eat in small bites.
Jiang Zhou served herself a bowl of rice and picked up a piece of rabbit meat. The meat was tender, fresh, and spicy, making it very appetizing with rice.
In modern times, Jiang Zhou was a person who loved spicy food. Since transmigrating, she had only eaten rice porridge or bland stir-fries, and it had been a long time since she had eaten chili.
In the Baisheng dynasty, vegetables were scarce, and there was simply no such thing as chili peppers.
If she hadn’t seen dried chilies at the Western Region people’s stall, who were buying furs when she went to the county to sell rabbits today, she wouldn’t have bought some back to satisfy her craving.
While eating, she carefully saved the chili seeds. If they could be planted here, she wouldn’t have to worry about not having chili anymore.
She ate a piece of meat, and her lips turned red from the spice, but it was incredibly satisfying.
She wasn’t sure if Lin Muwan could handle spicy food. Seeing that Lin Muwan was only eating the green vegetables and hadn’t touched a piece of meat, Jiang Zhou used the serving chopsticks she had prepared to put a small piece of meat into her bowl, smiling as she said, “Eat slowly. It’s a bit spicy; I don’t know if you’re used to it.”
After speaking, she poured a cup of water and placed it next to Lin Muwan’s hand.
She kept her gaze fixed on the piece of meat in Lin Muwan’s bowl.
