- Chapter 60 - A Cage in the Clouds [ End ]
Walking Into the Trap
Regarding the matter of becoming a mother, Xuan Yuchi had no psychological preparation whatsoever.
In the modern world, there were long-established methods to prevent an Omega from conceiving after a lifelong mark.
Although they were very much in love and cautious in that regard, as both of them were busy with work and had no intention of taking on the burden of a child.
However, the moment she saw the report, a strange feeling rose in Xuan Yuchi’s heart, as if something soft had nudged her.
“Do you want her?” Bian Yunchen asked.
“I don’t want you to suffer,” Xuan Yuchi lifted her head from the report.
No matter how advanced technology became, the party who was pregnant and gave birth couldn’t avoid the hardship.
Their combined wealth certainly required an heir, but it didn’t necessarily have to be their own child.
“I want her,” Bian Yunchen said. She seemed to recall something and smiled gently, “It’s best if she looks like you, so I can see your childhood once more.”
Xuan Yuchi was touched. She tentatively reached out and placed her hand on Yunchen’s lower abdomen: “Then may she be like you.”
She would let the child grow up happy, a child who would certainly smile much more than Yunchen did back then.
That evening, Xuan Yuchi sat alone in her study, cancelling all work for the next two years.
“I’m sorry, I can’t disclose the specific reason, but rest assured, the penalty for breach of contract will be paid in full.”
“No… I’m perfectly healthy, and Yunchen is also very healthy.”
Then, she called Huo Tian.
“Mom, I’m going to have a daughter.”
Huo Tian was vacationing with Xuan Ling on the other side of the planet and nearly choked when she heard this. “Didn’t you two have no plans for a child?”
“Can you take good care of Yunchen by yourself?”
“Your mother and I are flying back immediately!”
Xuan Yuchi quickly stopped her: “No need, Mom, I can do it!”
Xuan Ling also restrained Huo Tian. “Xiaochi is an adult now, don’t treat her like a child.”
She took the phone: “Then take good care of Yunchen. We’ll come to see you after our vacation is over.”
Xuan Yuchi: “Okay.”
Someone knocked on the door. Xuan Yuchi left the study, and Bian Yunchen had already reached the door and opened it.
The visitor was the assistant, delivering things to Xuan Yuchi.
“Thank you for your trouble,” Xuan Yuchi carried a large bag of books into the house.
Yunchen casually picked up one.
“Pregnancy Nutrition Menu…”
Her gaze then fell to the other books in the bag, all about how to care for pregnant women and infants.
Xuan Yuchi told her to hurry to bed, but she slipped back into the study and began to study them carefully.
In the following days, she revolved around Yunchen during the day, following her everywhere, and studied at night, living an incredibly disciplined life.
In a blink of an eye, she saw the child playing with the umbilical cord for the first time on the ultrasound machine.
It didn’t seem much longer before she welcomed her daughter’s arrival amidst anxious waiting.
Their daughter was named Pingle, a name Xuan Yuchi chose. She only hoped the child could possess ordinary happiness, and ideally live a stable life without too much fatigue, and certainly not be unlucky enough to be chosen by fate.
As Xuan Yuchi had hoped, Pingle resembled Yunchen greatly and was also smarter than her peers. She learned to talk very early, and the first word she learned was ‘Mommy’ ( for Bian Yunchen).
When she heard Pingle call for Mommy, Xuan Yuchi was even more moved than Bian Yunchen.
Pingle loved to smile; she had been smiling shortly after birth and was a child everyone agreed was adorable.
Yunchen didn’t publicize Pingle’s birth. Neither she nor Xuan Yuchi wanted Pingle to grow up under public scrutiny.
But Pingle received no less attention. Because of Pingle’s arrival, even Huo Xiaoli started to visit Xuan Yuchi more often.
She adored her niece. Even with a busy political schedule, she would rush to Xuan Yuchi’s house before midnight to celebrate Pingle’s birthday.
Pingle would specifically wait for her little aunt to arrive before blowing out the candles. She would wish for her little aunt to be happier, visit her more often, and regularly go back to Grandma’s house for dinner.
Huo Xiaoli always had to turn away to wipe her tears after hearing this.
Pingle loved going to Grandma’s house to play because Grandma spoiled her rotten. The candy she was limited to eating at home, she could eat her fill of at Grandma’s house.
Grandma’s house would constantly make new delicious foods for Pingle. Pingle was four years old and the happiest child in the world.
And since Pingle’s birth, Xuan Yuchi had never dreamed about the white fog again.
Apart from managing the family assets, she dedicated herself entirely to the child. Pingle was closer to her than to Yunchen.
She was completely tethered by this child, reluctant to leave her side for even a moment.
On Christmas when Pingle was five, they took her to Fengxia Island. They specifically closed the island for their visit. The three of them were lying on the beach when they woke up to find Pingle missing.
The two frantically searched for Pingle, nearly turning Fengxia Island upside down, but by nightfall, Pingle was still nowhere to be found.
Yunchen collapsed, clutching her heart, unable to stand up straight. Xuan Yuchi instructed the Bian family to take care of Yunchen, and she led the search team again.
Finally, they found Pingle in the hotel basement.
To be precise, Pingle appeared by herself.
Before that, they had thoroughly checked the basement.
Pingle looked bewildered as she was embraced by her mother.
Hearing her mother’s sobs, she raised her little hand to wipe her mother’s tears.
Xuan Yuchi asked her where she had been.
Pingle just said, “I don’t know either.”
Yunchen completely fainted. Xuan Yuchi took Pingle into the hospital room, and she slept in the same bed as Pingle.
That night, Pingle suddenly woke up and quietly asked her, “Mother, what is a System?”
Xuan Yuchi’s eyes snapped open, feeling like she had been hit hard on the head.
System 666.
System 666!
This time, System 666 did not answer.
Perhaps System 666 had quietly left a long time ago, but Xuan Yuchi hadn’t noticed at all.
Xuan Yuchi asked Pingle what happened during the time she was missing.
Pingle shook her head, either truly not knowing or not wanting to say.
This was a secret only between Pingle and Xuan Yuchi. Pingle said never to tell Mommy.
That night, the dream about the white fog enveloped Xuan Yuchi once more.
Another year passed. Pingle showed no abnormalities, and Xuan Yuchi gradually relaxed.
One day, Xuan Yuchi asked about the System again, and Pingle said she didn’t remember.
She didn’t remember being missing, and she didn’t remember the System.
Xuan Yuchi could tell at a glance whether her own child was lying.
Pingle had genuinely forgotten.
Pingle started elementary school at seven, showing extraordinary talent. She got perfect scores in every subject, despite Xuan Yuchi’s approach to parenting being to let Pingle play as much as she wanted.
Considering Pingle’s situation, Xuan Yuchi and Yunchen discussed it and decided to let Pingle skip a grade.
Pingle skipped from first to third grade, and within a month, she was once again outperforming her surrounding classmates.
When Pingle was in fourth grade, she was noticed by a teacher who specialized in seeking out geniuses because of a competition. The teacher invited Pingle to join a youth class, whose investor was a certain technology giant.
Xuan Yuchi only learned about this later.
It was an old acquaintance who told her.
A Fan called Xuan Yuchi excitedly: “Yuchi, your Pingle is truly a genius among geniuses. She will surely make era-defining research in the future.”
Xuan Yuchi had forgotten how long it had been since she had been in contact with A Fan, so much so that she was a bit stunned upon hearing her voice.
The two chatted for a while, and she learned that A Fan was thriving in the technology industry, having nearly reached a monopoly.
When Yunchen returned home that evening, Xuan Yuchi told her about Pingle joining the youth class. When she mentioned that A Fan organized the class, the smile on Yunchen’s face froze.
A few days later, Pingle came to Xuan Yuchi, very unhappy, and asked why her mother had secretly withdrawn her from the youth class.
Xuan Yuchi went to ask Yunchen.
Yunchen countered, “Have you forgotten what our expectations for our child are? We only want her to be an ordinary person.”
Xuan Yuchi remembered Pingle’s sudden disappearance that year. She, who always indulged her child, stood firmly on Yunchen’s side without a word.
If Xuan Yuchi’s life had been going incredibly smoothly since a certain day, Pingle was the bug in her life.
Pingle entered her rebellious phase in the fifth grade. She used to tell Xuan Yuchi everything, but now she was silent and reserved, silently opposing her mother and Mommy.
Pingle rarely smiled anymore, often looking at others with annoyance and contempt.
She even joined a demonstration against her little aunt, where she was photographed. Pingle’s identity was revealed to the public, and Xuan Yuchi and Bian Yunchen came forward to apologize to the public on her behalf.
That night, Yunchen yelled at Pingle for the first time. Pingle had a huge fight with Yunchen and ran away from home.
Xuan Yuchi rushed out in the heavy rain to find Pingle, and personally saw Pingle struck by a broken tree branch.
Pingle was wheeled out of the emergency room. Xuan Yuchi lifted the sheet covering her face and looked at her one last time.
A few days later, Yunchen found out she was pregnant again.
Xuan Yuchi didn’t dwell too much in the grief of losing her child, and just like years ago, she meticulously cared for Yunchen.
A few months later, the baby was born.
Xuan Yuchi named her Anyue.
Compared to Pingle, Yunchen definitely preferred Anyue.
Even while still in Yunchen’s belly, Anyue was the quieter one, the one who caused Mommy less trouble.
Anyue was very well-behaved. As Shi Yan put it, Anyue was simply an angel baby.
During Anyue’s growth, she didn’t show the extraordinary talent that Pingle had, but she was obedient. Anything Yunchen told her not to do, Anyue absolutely wouldn’t do.
Anyue was very good at coaxing and loved to cling to Xuan Yuchi. Even at a young age, she was considerate. She would bring back small biscuits from kindergarten for Xuan Yuchi and say, “Mother, you worked hard, eat the biscuits.”
When Anyue was a little older, she fell in love with reading and stopped clinging to Xuan Yuchi.
Although Anyue didn’t have a super high IQ, she was a studious child. She often asked Xuan Yuchi about words she didn’t understand from books.
“Mother, what is a System?”
Hearing these words again, Xuan Yuchi immediately thought of Pingle and couldn’t help but cry in front of Anyue.
Anyue was very sensible; she immediately stopped asking and quietly returned to her room.
That night, she told Mommy what happened during the day, and Mommy praised her for doing well.
Bian Yunchen took Xuan Yuchi for a psychological consultation the next day. She felt a little guilty. She should have realized sooner that Pingle’s death was a considerable blow to Xuan Yuchi, even though Xuan Yuchi never spoke of it.
But she would not let such an accident happen again.
There were too many past memories here, so Bian Yunchen suggested they move abroad.
Xuan Yuchi agreed because Anyue also wanted to go abroad and showed great longing, and she naturally didn’t want to disappoint her child.
Xuan Ling and Huo Tian were getting older and decided not to go with them.
That day, Yunchen was busy, and Xuan Yuchi brought Anyue home for dinner alone.
Xuan Ling cooked personally, and Anyue shared fun school stories with Xuan Ling nearby.
Huo Tian and Xuan Yuchi were sunbathing in the small garden. Xuan Yuchi said, “Mom, whenever you miss us, I’ll bring the child back to see you.”
Huo Tian was silent for a long time, staring blankly into the distance.
Xuan Yuchi: “Mom?”
Huo Tian suddenly drew a breath and stared intensely at Xuan Yuchi: “Xiaochi, go find A Fan. Before you leave, you must go find A Fan.”
“Mother, where are you going?”
Xuan Yuchi was changing her shoes by the door, and Anyue held onto her.
“Baby, Mother needs to go out. Be good and stay at Grandma’s house, and Mother will come back to pick you up.”
Anyue was unusually disobedient, stubbornly holding Xuan Yuchi’s hand: “No! I want to go with you.”
Xuan Yuchi’s gaze went past Anyue, and Huo Tian gently shook her head at her.
“Mother!”
Amidst the child’s screams, Xuan Yuchi fled in a panic, drove, and headed straight for A Fan’s company.
It was noon, but the building was deserted.
A person appeared behind Xuan Yuchi, holding a broom: “Miss, who are you looking for? There’s no one here anymore.”
A chill went down Xuan Yuchi’s spine: “Where did they all go?”
The cleaning staff: “They moved out.”
Xuan Yuchi surveyed the office floor by floor until she reached A Fan’s office.
Most of the things inside had been moved out, leaving only an arm-length fish tank. Xuan Yuchi half-crouched and stared at the thing inside the tank.
The pink coral stood quietly, intermittently emitting small bubbles above it, as if it were breathing, and its shape… resembled a brain.
A frantic phone call rang, and Xuan Yuchi decisively answered.
A Fan: “I heard you were looking for me?”
“Too bad you’re too late.”
Xuan Yuchi awoke as if from a dream and asked a question she should have asked long ago: “What is your company’s main business, exactly?”
A Fan: “Did you see the fish tank?”
“Yuchi, can coral dream?”
Xuan Yuchi felt a little dizzy. Her breathing frequency unconsciously quickened. Her eyes were fixed on the coral in front of her. The red brain continuously expanded until it filled her vision, and her heart pounded violently.
In the moment she collapsed, she saw Bian Yunchen rushing towards her.
“Her current condition is quite unstable. She could wake up at any time.”
“She has already realized it. Once she has that realization, her brain will generate resistance.”
“Of course, it’s not impossible that she actively chooses to remain there.”
In a daze, Xuan Yuchi heard people talking.
When she opened her eyes again, she was in the waiting room, and Anyue was playing with a Barbie doll beside her.
“Mother, look, this is the new dress I made for her.”
Anyue was good with her hands, making the dress out of candy and chocolate wrappers.
“My baby is so clever. Where’s Mommy?” Xuan Yuchi looked at the adorable child, her tone involuntarily softening.
“Mommy…”
Anyue looked distressed: “Mommy boarded the plane! Let’s hurry and find her!”
With that, she grabbed Xuan Yuchi’s hand and started to run towards the boarding gate.
The phone rang again, connecting automatically.
Xuan Yuchi wore a Bluetooth headset. In the headset was a long-unheard voice.
System 666: Host, don’t get on that plane!
Xuan Yuchi had let go of Anyue’s hand at some point.
Anyue stood at the boarding gate, with Yunchen behind her. There were many people separating Xuan Yuchi from them.
Yet, she could clearly hear Anyue say, “Mother, don’t you want us anymore?”
In an instant, her daughter’s first cry at birth, the first time she called ‘Mother’, her habit of nudging Xuan Yuchi’s hand when asking for a hug, countless images flashed through Xuan Yuchi’s mind.
Finally, she stopped at Yunchen’s eyes.
She saw Yunchen reaching out to her, and a feeling of immense attachment suddenly surged in her heart.
She seemed to love her deeply, and had loved her for many years.
