I Topped the Aloof Omega in a Scummy Alpha Novel - Chapter 5
A discussion on how to hook a sheep with a single ring.
Xuan Yuchi smiled faintly.
System: [According to the current law, since she is divorced, Bai Fu can apply for an investigation against you. Bai Fu’s family has been in politics for generations, and her mother is in the Special Intelligence Department. If they pull some strings, Host, the rest of your life will be spent in prison.]
The smile on Xuan Yuchi’s face froze.
Xuan Yuchi: [Are you setting me up? I’m going to die either way? If I don’t complete your mission, I’ll die. If I complete your mission, I might go to jail. Why don’t you just electrocute me?]
System: [Host, calm down. If Bai Fu’s family falls, or if you have a super powerful backer, you won’t be affected.]
So, at this stage, Xuan Yuchi had to lay low. Her eyes darted around, afraid to look at Bian Yunchen: “Sister Bian, don’t worry, I’ll be careful with my words and actions in the future. I definitely won’t cause you to get divorced.”
She really didn’t want to go to jail!
She remembered when she was young, she was selected as one of the school’s representatives to visit a correctional facility for minors to watch the inmates’ year-end performance. The facility leader educated them on the daily schedule, which required waking up at six every morning.
She did not want to repeat high school again!
Bian Yunchen stared into her eyes, her gaze intensifying. The thick, foggy emotion gradually coalesced. She scrutinized Xuan Yuchi’s expression, unable to detect the slightest hint of a lie.
This was the first time Xuan Yuchi had felt so nervous under her gaze. She timidly pointed behind her: “Sister Bian, I’ll leave first…”
She wanted to sneak away. As she spoke, she turned and took a step, but before she could finish, a cool touch landed on her wrist, grabbing it tightly, like a fitted handcuff.
Bian Yunchen’s brow was tightly furrowed, but it relaxed the moment Xuan Yuchi looked over, leaving only a cold demeanor.
There was a moment of silence.
Xuan Yuchi gently rotated her wrist, bewildered.
What’s wrong?
What is she doing?
Being held by her hand like this made her feel embarrassed.
She actually had a secret: every time she had physical contact with Yunchen, it was like the moment a roller coaster starts its descent—her legs would go weak, and her soul would feel like it left her body.
Bian Yunchen let go of her hand: “Don’t come looking for me again.”
Xuan Yuchi was confusedly shooed out. Back in the car, she was still pondering Yunchen’s words.
Xuan Yuchi: [She told me not to look for her. What does that mean?]
System: [The literal meaning.]
Xuan Yuchi: [How can that be? Sister Bian must have meant something else.]
System: [Haven’t you noticed she was angry just now?]
Xuan Yuchi: [Angry? Why was she angry?]
System: [Or maybe she was flirting with you? I’m only a two-hundred-year-old system. Don’t make things like this difficult for me, you humans.]
Xuan Yuchi: [I get it. Is this playing hard to get?]
It was like their first kiss. Xuan Yuchi closed her eyes to kiss her, but every time she got close, Yunchen would deliberately lean back. Eventually, both of them fell to the ground, and Xuan Yuchi managed to kiss her by pinning her underneath.
Recalling their first kiss, a pure smile appeared on Xuan Yuchi’s face.
She turned off the high beam, and the aunt in the back woke up.
Aunt: “Little girl, where have you brought me? You’re not a human trafficker, are you?”
Xuan Yuchi: “No, Auntie. The car just broke down.”
She pressed the gas pedal and headed toward the aunt’s destination.
Forty minutes later, Xuan Yuchi got out of the car.
The aunt insisted on giving her a tip, but Xuan Yuchi waved her hand: “No need, Auntie. I have money. I’m just doing the designated driving to experience life.”
Aunt: “Hahaha, you look like you have a noble air about you, little girl. Are you interested in becoming an actress?”
The aunt gave her a business card: “Think about it and call me.”
Xuan Yuchi tucked the business card into her pants pocket.
In the CBD at the break of dawn, the tall buildings lit up with scattered lights. A bus drove past Xuan Yuchi.
She followed it. The bus had two levels, the top one was open-air. Taking a bus for sightseeing before the city wakes up might be quite interesting, she had read about it in a magazine before.
Once she got on, she noticed an advertisement for Yunchen on the adjacent bus. Xuan Yuchi leaned her head against the seat and looked at it diagonally.
She had said a long time ago that Yunchen would become a superstar, the most amazing actress in the world.
What about her?
Xuan Yuchi started to ponder.
She would probably become a great person who saves the world. Maybe she would be recorded in history, her alma mater would erect her bronze statue, and Mom… Mom would be proud of her in heaven too, right?
The light rain fell silently. Xuan Yuchi held out one hand to catch it, and her heart also became lighter.
Although she didn’t have a lot of money anymore, she discovered that the ultimate spiritual enjoyment was imagination!
After transferring a few times, Xuan Yuchi returned home. The door was locked.
She knocked, and Xuan Ling opened the door, looking haggard.
Xuan Ling was dressed neatly and spoke sternly: “Where have you been?”
Xuan Yuchi: “I had something to do just now. I went to find Yunchen.”
Xuan Ling sighed in relief. Seeing rain droplets in Xuan Yuchi’s hair, she fetched her a towel.
Xuan Yuchi rubbed her hair: “Mother, I’m going to catch up on sleep now.”
Xuan Ling looked hesitant.
Xuan Yuchi: “Mother, do you have something you want to say to me?”
Xuan Ling: “You were tired last night, so I didn’t finish telling you. Our family is not what it used to be. Our former business competitors haven’t let us go. Try to go out as little as possible in the future.”
The adults in the family almost never discussed serious matters in front of Xuan Yuchi, but Xuan Yuchi was not unaware of the family’s situation.
For instance, back in middle school, when the Xuan family was flourishing, she attended a private aristocratic middle school where her classmates were various second-generation heirs. Some curried favor with her, and Xuan Yuchi accepted everyone, taking them along to play.
Others had been at odds with her since the start of the school year. They weren’t even in the same class but would inexplicably come looking for trouble.
To deal with these people, she usually had three methods. The first was to find a teacher. If the teacher wouldn’t handle it, it meant it had to be settled privately. Privately meant she would gather her followers and beat up the one who deserved it.
If the opponent’s combat strength was too strong and she couldn’t win, there was only the last option: ask Yunchen, who was a year ahead, for help.
Yunchen would then bring up the school rules, quickly gather all the evidence of the opponent’s violations, reason with the dean of academic affairs, and finally, in her capacity as the student council president, communicate the school’s disciplinary action.
This last move was a hundred percent effective.
Gradually, those people only dared to badmouth Xuan Yuchi behind her back.
Xuan Yuchi had noticed their names—they were the children of the families that were business rivals of her family.
A bunch of losers. Just because her family had fallen out of power, did she have to be afraid of them?
Xuan Yuchi: “Mother, my situation was much more dangerous when I was abroad. Don’t worry, I have a strong will to live. Maybe they’re just trying to scare us, wanting us to be cowards for the rest of our lives.”
Xuan Ling looked at her daughter, who was as fearless as a newborn calf, and sighed.
This fearless, reckless demeanor was somewhat similar to her wife when she was younger.
Xuan Ling: “Fine, given your personality, you can’t be kept indoors anyway. You just said you went to see Yunchen. What is your relationship with her now…”
Xuan Ling hesitated to say those two words.
Firstly, with the family’s downfall, the fact that she still had a place to live and hadn’t been completely liquidated was largely thanks to Yunchen’s quiet maneuvering.
Secondly, the sudden upheaval in the family back then, and her own realizations over the past few years, made her suspect the Bai family might have been involved. Yunchen had an engagement with the Bai family’s daughter. She wasn’t sure what Yunchen was thinking, as the girl had been more mature than her peers since childhood.
Her daughter breaking off the engagement had been a huge slap in the face for the Bian family. Yunchen protecting her was already very benevolent.
Xuan Ling would not harbor the delusion that Yunchen would break off her engagement for the sake of her unreliable daughter.
But as soon as her daughter returned, the two met, coupled with Yunchen hinting to her previously that she had been secretly looking for Xuan Yuchi’s whereabouts.
Xuan Ling thought that Yunchen probably still harbored some old feelings for Xuan Yuchi.
She also blamed herself. If the family still had its assets, she would be willing to give half of the family fortune to the Bian family as an apology, allowing the two children to be together openly and honestly, instead of letting her daughter become Yunchen’s lover.
Xuan Yuchi: “Yunchen and I…”
System: [Have no relationship.]
Xuan Yuchi: [You didn’t have to jump in!]
Xuan Yuchi forced a smile: “We’re friends.”
Xuan Ling nodded awkwardly.
Xuan Yuchi: “Oh right, Mother, do you have any aromatherapy/scent diffusers?”
Xuan Ling shook her head.
Her wife and daughter, who liked scents, were not home, and she didn’t need any herself.
Xuan Ling went to the bedroom and took out one hundred dollars: “Our family is not what it used to be. Your mother can’t give you custom-made perfume anymore. You can buy a cheap one for now. Later, you’ll earn money to buy good ones yourself.”
Oh no, Xuan Yuchi couldn’t compromise on this matter one bit, but she still happily accepted the allowance from her mother. She enjoyed this feeling.
Xuan Yuchi: “Thank you, Mother.”
Back in the bedroom, Xuan Yuchi shopped online. She couldn’t afford the ones she used to use, but thousand-dollar priced ones were still acceptable.
She needed it urgently, so she bought an orange blossom scented one from a department store and had the delivery person bring it home, paying an extra eight hundred dollars for express delivery.
It arrived in half an hour.
Xuan Yuchi placed the scent diffuser on the nightstand. Soon, the faint orange blossom fragrance covered the musty smell in the room.
It was, after all, a century-old house that had been vacant for nearly a hundred years. If it weren’t for the family’s troubles, she thought she would never have come here.
The sun came out. Xuan Yuchi drew the curtains, planning to have a beautiful sleep before the system called her.
As soon as she closed her eyes, she thought of nothing else, so she slept soundly until the phone on her pillow rang. She answered it, and a detached voice echoed in the quiet bedroom.
“Give me the ring back.”
Xuan Yuchi, half-asleep: “Ring… ring, what ring?”
Bian Yunchen: “My ring.”
Xuan Yuchi rolled over: “I don’t know, can’t find it…”
The phone beeped and the call ended.
Two hours later, Xuan Yuchi woke up. Because she had slept for too long, she felt a little dizzy.
The ordered daily necessities had also been delivered. A large box of things was in the living room. As she went to unpack, a question occurred to her.
She hadn’t deposited the money into the bank yet, so where did the money she just paid come from?
She checked her payment history and found she had used the SWEET bank card. This card belonged to Yunchen. Before returning to the country, it only had fifty cents on it. Somehow, there was now fifty thousand dollars.
There was also a text message she had overlooked, sent by a stranger.
“I have deposited fifty thousand dollars into the card as payment to redeem the ring. If you agree, send me a time, and I will send someone to retrieve it.”
Ah, that ring!
In her sophomore year, she produced a play, with Yunchen as the protagonist. The performance was a huge success. The two of them were supposed to go on stage to accept the award at the end of the event, but there was a supposedly once-in-a-millennium meteor shower that day, and she played the rogue, making Yunchen accompany her up the mountain.
Just as the meteor streaked across the sky, Yunchen covered her eyes and placed that ring in the palm of her hand.
The next day, the two got engaged. Everything had been quietly prepared without Xuan Yuchi’s knowledge.
Yunchen said the ring was a family heirloom and asked Xuan Yuchi to keep it safe.
Later, when Xuan Yuchi was possessed, she threw it away once in a fit of madness, but Yunchen picked it back up.
When Xuan Yuchi went abroad, the moment she opened her suitcase, she saw the ring.
And later…
Jessica was nearly going crazy. On the eve of her return to the country, an informant found her, asking her to buy this piece of information for five thousand dollars.
Jessica said she didn’t need it. The informant was confident and even offered to reveal the information first, saying Jessica didn’t have to pay if she didn’t think it was worth it.
This informant had illegally entered the country from China. She was a former reporter, and relying on her exceptional memory, she recognized Jessica as a member of the Bian family.
The reporter said: “The Bian family’s heirloom ring was pawned to Sister Lian by Xuan Yuchi.”
Sister Lian was a small supermarket owner.
Jessica’s face turned green with anger. Such a precious family possession had fallen into the hands of a small business owner. Xuan Yuchi was too much!
