They were so close that Xuan Yuchi could clearly feel her heart beating “thump-thump.”
She splashed cold water onto her face, the droplets hitting the bathroom mirror, making it feel as if she had been caught in the rain.
Xuan Yuchi braced herself against the sink, her heart still beating “thump-thump.”
She had held other people’s hands and hugged others, but those were among friends. It had been a long time since she experienced such an ambiguous feeling, and her mood remained turbulent.
Xuan Yuchi dried her face and lay sprawled out on the bed, recalling the beginning of her relationship with Bian Yunchen. Back then, she was a novice young girl, and a mere glance from Yunchen would make her heart race.
She had gained some experience after a few years abroad and considered herself mature and seasoned, yet unexpectedly, she was still a move behind.
She simply closed her eyes but couldn’t stop the thoughts swirling in her mind.
Was what they shared the friendship of growing up together, or was it love?
Xuan Yuchi couldn’t quite tell anymore. At least, she had never felt this way about anyone else.
Riding the cable car up Qishan Mountain, the cabin was spacious, and since it was a weekday, there weren’t many people. The three of them each sat on one side.
Xuan Yuchi pretended to gaze at the mountain range getting further and further away. There was a layer of glass between her and the distant view, and on the glass, she could see Bian Yunchen’s reflection. Yunchen was also leaning back in her seat, looking at something unknown.
Xuan Yuchi had a sudden impulse and made a funny face, catching a glimpse of a fleeting look of exasperation on Bian Yunchen’s face.
She really was looking at me, Xuan Yuchi thought, feeling inexplicably delighted.
The scenery outside the window was truly beautiful, no less impressive than the places she had seen abroad.
To Bai Fu, however, all this was undoubtedly these two flirting right in front of her. Utterly hateful!
The cable car reached the station, and the speed was somewhat fast. Passengers needed to jump out quickly or they would miss the stop.
Xuan Yuchi was farthest from the door. Bai Fu, who was the first to get off, stalled for quite a bit of time, making it almost a matter of life or death when it was Xuan Yuchi’s turn.
Seeing Bian Yunchen walk toward her, she naturally extended her hand, only for Bian Yunchen to merely bend down to pick up a hair tie from the floor, leaving her embarrassed.
Xuan Yuchi seized the last chance and lunged out, accidentally twisting her ankle. She suppressed the painful expression, pretending nothing happened.
Bian Yunchen’s smile vanished as quickly as it came. Today, she wore a white dress, a sun hat, and expensive sunglasses. She ignored everyone and cared for no one.
When she was in a good mood, she might exchange a few words with Bai Fu, but she deliberately gave Xuan Yuchi the cold shoulder, acting as if she didn’t exist.
Xuan Yuchi was very familiar with this behavior; it was how she had been since childhood. Whenever she was upset, she would treat her like air. Back then, she had been truly persistent, chasing after her with a warm face to a cold shoulder, acting like a little shadow.
“I’m tired,” Bian Yunchen turned back and said, directing the comment at Xuan Yuchi.
Xuan Yuchi stood behind them, looking elsewhere, pretending not to understand the hint.
Bai Fu sensed an opportunity and moved to take Yunchen’s hand: “I’ll help you walk.”
Bian Yunchen raised both hands to cross her arms, maintaining a dignified posture: “That kind of thing should be left to the assistant.”
She mentioned Xuan Yuchi’s name, like ordering a sales associate at a luxury store to take off her shoes.
System: [Host, you can do it! Everything for Mom.]
Fine, fine, Xuan Yuchi accepted her fate, forcing herself to step forward to assist Bian Yunchen despite her somewhat swollen foot.
After walking for a while, she realized that it was Bian Yunchen who was actually supporting her.
A spark flashed in her lively eyes, and she happened to meet Yunchen’s gaze. The other party warned her with her eyes not to be too complacent.
As they walked upward, the crowd gradually increased. Ahead was Qishan Mountain’s famous photo spot, with a blue signboard that read: “I miss you very much at Qishan.”
Behind the blue sign, people were packed tightly. A palm-up, five-finger sculpture, large enough to seat ten people, looked about three meters high. Tourists queued up to stand on the fingertips for a photo, aiming to be the “tallest woman on Qishan.”
Bai Fu watched for a while and said with great regret: “Achen, let’s take a photo on top. Think of it as a souvenir for me.”
Bian Yunchen was not so stingy as to refuse such a small request. She let go of Xuan Yuchi’s arm and joined the queue.
Xuan Yuchi stood beneath the blue sign, feeling a little jealous as she watched the two of them. She muttered: “Can’t three people take a picture together?”
“Excuse me, little sister, could you move aside a bit?” a tourist coming to check-in at the sign said.
Xuan Yuchi moved to the side and saw a red-haired woman bypass the crowd and walk towards the area beneath the giant palm.
Why do I feel like I’ve seen this person somewhere before?
It was that same feeling again. Was it because she hadn’t been back to the country for so long that everything felt familiar?
There were several steel bars supporting the hand sculpture underneath, complexly interwoven. It turned out the middle finger of the hand had once broken and required these additions, also to ensure tourist safety.
Huo Xiaoli ran her hand over the steel bars and found the one she wanted furthest inside. With minimal effort, she used the technique of “four ounces against a thousand pounds” (effortless power). The tourists taking photos above cried out.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, I just had a hallucination. I thought the ground was shaking.”
“As long as you’re okay. Come on, three, two, one, ‘Get rich!'”
Bai Fu handed her phone to the tourist behind her: “Please take a photo for me. I’ll transfer you 50 yuan.”
The two walked to the fingertip. Bian Yunchen adjusted her sunglasses, her expression impassive.
“Okay, ready, take the picture,” Bai Fu urged, frowning, feeling uneasy inside.
Huo Xiaoli sneered, snapped the steel bar with her bare hands, and the stone carving broke. She leisurely walked away.
Bai Fu subconsciously tried to shield herself.
System 321: [Host, protect the aloof Omega!]
Only then did she hastily grab Bian Yunchen. The two of them fell together. Bian Yunchen fell on top of her, and Bai Fu instantly passed out.
The crowd screamed. A group of onlookers gathered. Xuan Yuchi pushed her way to the front. A piece of rubble the size of an egg was about to fall. Bian Yunchen was stunned by the fall. Xuan Yuchi darted forward, just about to reach out to block the falling rock, but she was embraced by someone.
The rubble landed on Bian Yunchen’s back. She gave a muffled grunt, her vision still shaky.
Someone who witnessed the entire process clicked their tongue.
“I’m telling you, that woman probably has something going on with this woman.”
“Ah, really? I thought she and the other one were a couple.”
“But why does the woman in the middle look a little familiar?”
Bai Fu broke her leg protecting Bian Yunchen and lay in a hospital bed with a cast.
“Movement is difficult lately. Date canceled,” she mass-sent the message to over fifty people.
The doorknob turned. Bai Fu immediately placed her phone on the bed and put on a pained expression.
The person who came was not Bian Yunchen, but her lawyer.
“Ms. Bian Yunchen is deeply sorry about your injury. Therefore, we have added a clause to the basic divorce agreement. Although your marriage relationship will no longer continue, Ms. Bian Yunchen will do her best to support you in becoming the next head of the Bai family.”
One second, two seconds, three seconds.
Bai Fu finally couldn’t hold back and threw a pillow at the lawyer: “I broke a leg for her, and she still wants to divorce me?!”
“How can she do something so heartless?”
“Tell her to come see me! Tell her to come and talk to me herself!”
Bai Fu screamed, like a child who had suffered great injustice, forgetting that their marriage was originally just a transaction.
And Bian Yunchen just wanted to end this transaction early.
The lawyer dodged her pillow attack, placed the agreement aside, and had no desire to continue dealing with a lunatic.
“Ms. Bian Yunchen instructed me that she is absolutely determined to divorce.”
Soon, someone first broke the news online that the popular actress was secretly married, subtly pointing the finger at Bian Yunchen.
A few hours later, another rumor was exposed: the popular actress was deeply embroiled in an emotional entanglement, flaunting her mistress in front of her legal spouse, accompanied by multiple photos of their backs.
Someone immediately recognized that this could only be Bian Yunchen.
Fans flocked to Shuihe Entertainment’s Weibo page demanding a clarification. Half an hour later, Shuihe Entertainment published a lengthy article, responding to the fact that Bian Yunchen was married and stating that Bian Yunchen and her wife’s relationship had broken down and they were currently negotiating a divorce. They asked everyone not to focus on Bian Yunchen’s private life and apologized for occupying public resources.
They spent a large sum of money to remove the Weibo trending topic, but within an hour, a new trending topic rose to the top. It was clear that a team was deliberately working against them behind the scenes.
The company immediately contacted major entertainment V accounts and marketing accounts for public relations damage control. The internet was temporarily split into two factions.
One faction strongly supported Bian Yunchen, upholding her freedom to divorce, praising her as a role model for all Omegas, and advocating that one should never endure an unhappy marriage.
The other faction was equally agitated, accusing Bian Yunchen of marital infidelity, moral decay, and being undeserving of her status, demanding a ban on her from the entertainment industry.
The two sides argued fiercely online.
Meanwhile, Bian Yunchen sat at a desolate family dinner, leisurely sipping some lotus root soup, and commented: “The flavor is a bit bland.”
Bian Shangying’s expression was solemn: “Achen, reconsider the divorce matter.”
Xiang Huaien hesitated, sighed after taking a spoonful of soup, but finally couldn’t hold back, tentatively asking: “I heard that Xuan Yuchi is back?”
She had also heard that Bian Yunchen had made her an assistant.
Bian Yunchen put down her soup and took the napkin handed to her by the maid: “It has nothing to do with her.”
Bian Shangying said sternly: “Don’t fall into the same pit twice.”
Bian Yunchen looked up, meeting her mother’s eyes directly: “Mother, I have always been a qualified heir, even if it means treating my own marriage as a bargaining chip. Is that still not enough?”
Her tone was questioning, sarcastic, and coldly provocative towards the mountain that once stood behind her.
And her mother was a mountain made of iron.
“No, it’s not enough,” Bian Shangying said. “As long as you are in this position, the Bian family is your lifelong responsibility.”
Unfortunately, Bian Yunchen’s heart was already colder than an iceberg. The solemn oath she made before the ancestors’ tombstone, and the pressure her mother intended to exert, she did not accept; it simply blew away like a gust of wind.
When Xuan Yuchi brought Susan to Amy’s office, Amy, who had been dealing with a headache all day, almost bowed to her: “Thank goodness, Yunchen has such a capable person like you by her side.”
It wasn’t that they hadn’t dug up any scandalous news about Bai Fu, but not a single person involved was willing to testify.
As the battle of public opinion came to an end, both sides sought peace, and Bian Yunchen emerged unscathed.
Five days later, she went to complete the divorce procedures.
“Wait,” Bai Fu called out to her, stuffing an envelope into her hand. “This is the last thing I can do for you.”
She actually wanted to say that it was all Xuan Yuchi colluding with that bitch Susan to set her up, but the more she said, the more mistakes she would make.
Bian Yunchen returned to her car and opened the letter. Inside were several photos. In the dim environment, Xuan Yuchi was seen indulging in pleasures with someone on the dance floor.
Should she be angry or surprised?
Didn’t she understand Xuan Yuchi? Xuan Yuchi had been a playful person since she was a child.
The photos were personally ignited by Bian Yunchen and tossed into the fireplace to turn into ashes.
Not long after, the doorbell rang outside.
Xuan Yuchi bought two good bottles of wine. One was to celebrate Bian Yunchen’s freedom from suffering, the second was to thank her for blocking the falling rubble for her that day, and the third was a sincere wish to catch up with Bian Yunchen.
The fourth was…
Without even mentioning the fourth, the first, second, and third were all invalidated.
Bian Yunchen opened the door but had no intention of inviting her in: “What are you here for?”
The unwelcoming tone was equal to a dismissal.
Xuan Yuchi held the red wine, thinking, Aren’t my intentions obvious enough?
Before she could speak, the door was slammed shut with a bang.
“Sister Bian,” she knocked.
“Yunchen?” she knocked again.
“Bian Yunchen!” she knocked hard.
This made her look very much like a stalker. Exhausted from knocking, Xuan Yuchi sat down on the floor.
She sent Bian Yunchen a super-long voice message attack.
“Sister Bian, Sister~ Good Sister? Why are you unhappy again? Who provoked you? Let me in, please. Tell me whatever’s bothering you. It’s better than brooding alone. Even if you’re upset, don’t take it out on others! I’m innocent!”
Bian Yunchen didn’t want to hear her voice, so she transcribed the voice message to text. Seeing the huge pile of ‘ah’s and ‘ya’s, the image of Xuan Yuchi acting like a spoiled brat when seeking reconciliation in the past flashed through her mind. She simply threw her phone farther away.
Seeing that she didn’t reply, Xuan Yuchi sent another long voice message.
“Yunchen, open the door… I have something important to discuss with you. I know your feelings are complicated after the divorce. You really suffered being with her. Treat yourself better in the future, and be with someone you like. I have a recommended candidate here, a perfect 120 points. I guarantee you’ll definitely like them.”
Bian Yunchen heard the notification tone and went to retrieve her phone, accidentally tapping it, which played the voice message directly.
Xuan Yuchi’s voice carried a sense of delight, which made Bian Yunchen’s face grow darker and darker. With a dark expression, she opened the door again.
“What candidate?”
“You’ll definitely like them?”
“Do you know me that well? And what standing do you have to say such a thing? A lover or a former fiancée? So, are you finding a coworker for yourself? You think too highly of yourself; it makes you look foolish and ridiculous.”
“Remember your current status!”
Bian Yunchen’s words swept over Xuan Yuchi like a machine gun, leaving her feeling like a beehive.
When Bian Yunchen closed the door, it created a gust of wind. In the wind was a cloud made of rain, which hit Xuan Yuchi and turned into a shower. She began to leak water everywhere, only realizing later that she was crying.
It seemed to be because Bian Yunchen had scolded her, but maybe not only because of that.
It was the tone of annoyance in the way that person cursed.
Did she annoy Bian Yunchen?
In this world, she didn’t care about many people. While traveling the world, she had encountered people who insulted her inexplicably, physically attacked her, and tried to kidnap her, yet she had never cried.
Xuan Yuchi took out a ring box from her pocket. She didn’t have much money left at home, so she shamelessly borrowed over 100,000 yuan from Afan.
When picking out the ring, the salesperson asked her why she hadn’t brought her fiancée, wondering if she wanted to give her a surprise.
Xuan Yuchi suddenly felt very guilty, recalling her willful escape three years ago. She seemed to see Bian Yunchen left alone at the engagement party, looking shocked and helpless.
Xuan Yuchi placed the ring box at the entrance of Bian Yunchen’s house.
She had originally come to complete the mission given by the System—to propose to Bian Yunchen.
Xuan Yuchi: [666, I might not be able to complete your mission.]
System: [Don’t do that! Don’t you want to see your mother wake up?]
Xuan Yuchi: [Mom wouldn’t want to see me hurt her again, either.]
Xuan Yuchi stayed with Huo Tian in the hospital for three days. On the fourth day, she told Xuan Ling that she was leaving.
Xuan Ling asked her where she planned to go.
Xuan Yuchi said she didn’t know; maybe to Yuebei, maybe to find Afan, or maybe somewhere else.
She went home and packed her luggage, which was less than what she brought back. She then took out the necklace and looked at it for a long time, still unsure how to deal with it.
Xuan Yuchi booked a flight for ten o’clock that night. She planned to seek refuge with relatives abroad.
She pulled her suitcase to the door. The night was deep. When she opened the door, she saw the most unexpected person. A scent of alcohol hit her face, accompanied by a cold and suppressed question: “Where are you going?”
Xuan Yuchi gripped the suitcase handle, keeping her head down, her voice muffled: “Something urgent came up.”
Bian Yunchen grabbed the hand holding the suitcase handle. The veins on the back of her hand bulged, and her fingers gripped so hard they seemed intent on leaving a mark.
Xuan Yuchi winced in pain. Suddenly, she felt a wet warmth on her wrist. Before she could look up, she was pulled and pressed against the door.
“Running away again?” Bian Yunchen started with a sneer, which gradually turned into a shaky smile.
Xuan Yuchi stared at her blankly, a pang of pain in her heart: “No.”
She lied.
“No?”
Bian Yunchen used her own words to expose her.
