Chapter 7: The Doctor
He would make sure to dedicate all his free time to accompanying his benefactor.
Ning Chen sighed inwardly. If I shouldn’t work part-time, then I won’t… After all, the meager amount of money he earned was completely inconsequential to He Shenyu. He had checked on his phone; the outfit He Shenyu bought for him cost nearly a hundred thousand yuan—he couldn’t afford that even if he worked part-time for an entire year.
On the drive back, He Shenyu also remembered the clothes. He asked Ning Chen, “Let me take you to buy a few sets of new clothes. You can pick whatever you like.”
Ning Chen didn’t refuse: “Okay.”
Shenyu turned the car and drove toward a high-end store that Dr. He frequented. Truthfully, he wouldn’t usually spend money in such a luxurious shop himself, but Dr. He’s private wardrobe consisted only of those specific brands. If he bought clothes according to his own original budget, he would definitely be exposed when mingling with people like Fu Hengzhan. Sometimes, clothing represents social class.
It was a helpless situation; he needed Dr. He’s identity, so he could only enjoy limited freedom in small ways. Perhaps only when he could break away from Fu Hengzhan’s circle would he truly be able to start a new life. But that wouldn’t be now. He had checked the hospital computer and found that Fu Hengzhan indeed held shares in Dr. He’s private hospital—in fact, he was the majority shareholder.
Beep, beep, beep—
The cars ahead were honking incessantly. Shenyu was curious; it was the last intersection—why was it suddenly so congested? It wasn’t the weekend. Something was wrong; a red light shouldn’t last this long. Shenyu rolled down the window and leaned out to look ahead. Unfortunately, the queue was too long for him to see what was happening.
Many other drivers were just as curious. A man nearby opened his car door, stood up to look for a while, and then simply walked a distance forward. After a long while, the man returned, and He Shenyu called out to him, “Excuse me, what’s going on up ahead? Why is it so blocked?”
“I couldn’t see clearly either, but I heard from people nearby that someone collapsed at the traffic light. No one knows what to do; they’re all just crowding around,” the man replied.
Hearing this, He Shenyu couldn’t sit still. He turned to Ning Chen and said, “I’m going to go check it out. Do you want to come?”
Ning Chen nodded: “I’ll go with you.”
Without another word, He Shenyu shut the car door and walked quickly toward the front with Ning Chen.
“Excuse me, let me through! Did someone collapse? I’m a doctor, let me pass,” He Shenyu said urgently to the crowd.
The people around finally reacted, calling out, “Make way! There’s a doctor here. Let the doctor through! Move aside, everyone!”
“Quick, the doctor is here. Doctor, look at what happened! He just collapsed right here.”
“Yeah, he was just walking and suddenly fell. I saw him go down. I don’t know why; please check on him.”
The crowd explained the situation while parting to create a path. Shenyu walked through with Ning Chen and saw a young man lying in the middle of the road. Someone nearby was performing CPR, but the posture was incorrect. It wouldn’t be effective. Shenyu rushed forward and knelt down. “I’m a doctor, let me take over!”
The kind-hearted man quickly moved aside. “Okay, okay, you do it. I only learned this from watching videos, I don’t know if I’m doing it right…”
Shenyu tilted the patient’s chin, checked his breathing, and then began chest compressions with his hands interlaced at the correct spot. His movements were steady. He glanced at Ning Chen standing beside him and said, “Ning Chen, ask them if they’ve called an ambulance and how long it’ll take. Also, see if there’s an AED nearby.”
Ning Chen nodded: “Okay.”
He took out his phone to search. A bystander heard the question and replied, “An ambulance was called long ago. They said it would take more than ten minutes to get here.”
“I see,” He Shenyu said without looking up.
Ning Chen searched through various map apps. He knelt down next to He Shenyu and said regretfully, “I’ve searched everywhere; there doesn’t seem to be an AED nearby.”
“It’s fine, we’ll wait for the ambulance,” He Shenyu took a breath.
Watching his movements, Ning Chen felt a strange sensation. The words Manager Cheng had said echoed in his mind: “President He is a doctor; he saves lives and has a very kind heart…” He had thought it was just a casual remark, but it turned out He Shenyu really was a professional doctor. It felt strangely contradictory.
Yet, everything before him was real. He could hear He Shenyu’s heavy breathing from the exertion, see his knuckles turning white from the pressure, and notice the slight trembling in his arms as he worked. Shenyu was clearly being extremely serious, so focused that he didn’t even notice his bangs sticking to his eyelids from the sweat. For a moment, Ning Chen wanted to reach out and move that annoying strand of hair, but he abandoned the idea—this was not the time to be distracted by such trifles.
After a while, seeing the strain on He Shenyu’s arms, Ning Chen spoke up hesitantly: “Are you tired? I’ve learned first aid too. Shall we switch?”
Shenyu looked up quickly at Ning Chen and said, “Okay. Get ready.”
Ning Chen put his phone away and quickly moved into position. The two swapped seamlessly. Shenyu checked the patient’s pulse and breathing again. Finally, the distant wail of an ambulance siren was heard. Shenyu breathed a sigh of relief; the man’s breathing was gradually becoming stronger.
They continued for a bit longer until the ambulance arrived. Since the patient was alone, He Shenyu followed them to the hospital to explain the situation. He drove his own car, trailing right behind the ambulance.
After reaching the hospital, they waited for a long time until the patient’s family finally arrived, signaling the end of their task. The family was deeply grateful and offered them money, which He Shenyu naturally refused. By the time they left, it was quite late.
Shenyu looked at Ning Chen: “We haven’t had dinner yet. The food the housekeeper made at home has probably gone to waste. Let’s find a restaurant to eat at.”
Ning Chen had no objections: “Okay.”
Shenyu searched on the car’s navigation system and soon found a restaurant. The name was “Zhi Si Bu Yu” (Unswerving Until Death), a Szechuan-Chongqing style eatery.
In the original novel, Fu Hengzhan had taken Ning Chen to many restaurants, and Ning Chen had never shown any outward preference. However, He Shenyu had the “God’s perspective” advantage. He remembered that Ning Chen had once praised the taste of this place in his heart—especially their signature Poached Fish in Chili Oil. Ning Chen liked spicy food because his mother did; he had grown up eating it. However, Fu Hengzhan had a very bland palate. In the novel, Ning Chen had always accompanied Fu Hengzhan in eating bland food without ever raising an objection. Thinking about it, it was no wonder Ning Chen went crazy later. Not eating well, not sleeping well, and waking up to someone he hated—anyone would get depressed.
The restaurant was exactly as described in the novel: a serene environment with simple yet high-end decor. A waiter led them to a private room where the noise from the lobby was completely blocked out; the soundproofing was excellent. They quickly ordered via a tablet. Once the waiter left, only the two of them remained.
Shenyu looked at Ning Chen across from him and felt a sudden wave of awkwardness. Although they were now essentially living together, they had only known each other for barely three days.
Ning Chen, however, didn’t stare back blankly. He was very perceptive; he rinsed the tableware on the table and then poured tea for both of them. Shenyu took a sip; he didn’t know what kind of tea it was, but it tasted quite good with a hint of sweetness.
At that moment, Ning Chen suddenly spoke softly: “Shenyu, I want to go to the hospital to see my brother tomorrow. Is that okay?”
Shenyu paused. He had forgotten that he was currently occupying all of Ning Chen’s free time. He quickly said, “Of course. You don’t have to ask next time; just let me know.”
“Okay,” Ning Chen also took a sip of tea.
They didn’t have to wait long before the waiter served the food. The service was fast—the perks of a high-end restaurant. Even though he was prepared, the prices on the menu had still given He Shenyu a shock.
When the signature Poached Fish was served, He Shenyu couldn’t wait to take a bite. It was tender and smooth, and the flavor was indeed excellent, but… it was too spicy.
“Cough… cough…” Shenyu put down his chopsticks and fumbled for his cup. But the tea inside was too hot to take a large gulp. He squinted his eyes, almost coughing to the point of tears.
Ning Chen reacted quickly. He grabbed a bottle of mineral water from the table, opened it, and held it to He Shenyu’s lips. Without thinking, He Shenyu leaned into Ning Chen’s hand, steadying the bottle as he drank deeply. It took him a while to recover.
“Are you okay?” Ning Chen patted his back gently. “Can you not handle spicy food? Why did you choose this place specifically?”
Shenyu tilted his head up to look at Ning Chen. A tear rolled down from the corner of his eye. He froze for a moment, and just as he was about to answer, he realized he was holding Ning Chen’s entire hand…
“Um…” Shenyu pondered how to answer while casually placing the mineral water on the table. “Oh, I can actually handle spice. I just didn’t expect this place to be this spicy…”
Ning Chen nodded. He reached for a pack of tissues, took one out, and wiped away the tear that had dripped onto He Shenyu’s chin. Shenyu awkwardly pressed down on Ning Chen’s hand and took the tissue from him.
Why does this feel so strange?
Thinking back, Ning Chen had been silently serving him since they arrived. Had he already grown accustomed to his “role”? Fu Hengzhan had been too overbearing in the original novel; he couldn’t remember what Ning Chen’s attitude was like at the very beginning.
Shenyu took a breath and asked Ning Chen, “What do you think of the taste?”
Ning Chen replied, “It’s very good.”
Shenyu nodded: “That’s good. Keep eating. After this, we’ll go buy those clothes.”
Ning Chen stood up straight. His gaze moved away from He Shenyu’s damp eyes and lingered involuntarily on He Shenyu’s slightly red earlobe. There was a small red mole there. He had only noticed it just now when he leaned over to wipe away He Shenyu’s tears. Usually, when he wasn’t wearing his glasses, he couldn’t see such a small detail clearly.
Now that He Shenyu’s entire face was flushed red, the mole stood out distinctly. It looked like… a piercing from a past life.
“Ning Chen?” Shenyu looked back at him curiously. “Why the sudden silence?”
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Ning Chen cleared his throat lightly and slowly walked back to his seat.
