Chapter 43: Pure Innocence
In all fairness, as a professional doctor, He Shenyu felt he shouldn’t hesitate at a time like this.
Furthermore, the “patient” was Ning Chen. Under normal circumstances, he should have been even more anxious to help.
But the current situation was just all wrong!
Ning Chen wasn’t wearing a single thing…
Shenyu felt uncomfortable from head to toe. He didn’t know where to look, and he certainly didn’t know where to put his hands.
Never mind crouching down to check Ning Chen’s foot—this was simply too much…
He couldn’t do it.
For a reserved person like him, this was way over the line.
Shenyu stammered, “Can you hold on for a bit? Does it hurt a lot? Maybe you should finish washing up and put some clothes on first, and then I’ll give you a proper check-up in a moment.”
Ning Chen shook his head, looking at He Shenyu piteously. “Shenyu, I feel like I can’t move. What should I do?”
What can be done? What else is there to do?
Shenyu truly felt he must have owed Ning Chen in a past life…
What kind of cosmic force made a straight man read a BL novel right before dying of overwork?
Was it destiny?
Sighing deeply, He Shenyu steeled himself. He couldn’t care about anything else anymore. He closed his eyes and crouched down.
He took a deep breath before opening his eyes again. His hands pressed against Ning Chen’s foot as he began his assessment: “Does it hurt here?”
“A little.” Ning Chen looked down at him, swallowing hard.
“How about here?” Shenyu asked again.
“It’s okay,” Ning Chen answered.
After examining him, He Shenyu felt the bone and concluded it was intact. He spoke up: “The bone is fine. You might have just strained a ligament. Rest for a bit and see if the symptoms subside.”
“Mhm. Shenyu, you can get up now. I feel a bit better…” Ning Chen said.
Shenyu nodded. He intended to close his eyes and stand up following the same path he took down, but they were simply too close. This time, he was blocked by something on the way up.
“Sss—” Ning Chen let out a soft gasp.
Shenyu hurried to open his eyes to check the situation. Upon opening them, a shade of pink was right in front of his face.
In an instant, He Shenyu felt like he was being steamed alive. He stood up abruptly, turning his head away, his voice tinged with anger: “Ning Chen! You’ve gone too far!”
“I’m sorry,” Ning Chen said, wrapping his arms around him and leaning even closer. Their bodies were pressed together even more tightly than when they had first crashed into each other. “I’m sorry, Shenyu. I didn’t do it on purpose. I can’t control it. Is this a normal reaction? Or am I sick? Please teach me.”
Shenyu turned back to look at Ning Chen with some hesitation. The expression on the younger man’s face was so sincere that He Shenyu wavered once more.
That’s right, Ning Chen was essentially a blank slate. No one had ever taught him about these things. It seemed normal for him not to understand…
Shenyu took a breath and said, “You’re not sick. Didn’t you learn this in biology class? It’s a normal physiological phenomenon.”
It was just…
Shenyu felt uneasy and wanted to step back, but he was already against the wall. Ning Chen was practically pinning him down, and the sensation of certain things poking him was very obvious.
He suspected Ning Chen was doing it on purpose again…
But then he saw that innocent expression, and he became uncertain again…
“Can you move at all? Can you let go of me first?” Shenyu took a deep breath.
Ning Chen felt he had achieved his goal. He was actually struggling to endure it himself now, so he proactively stepped back: “I feel a bit better, Shenyu.”
He didn’t dare press against He Shenyu any longer. His own hands were itching to reach under He Shenyu’s clothes. If they stayed in this confined space any longer, he was afraid he’d scare the shy Shenyu away again.
So, he slowly backed away a few steps and said to He Shenyu, “Shenyu, I can finish my shower now. You should go out…”
“Mhm.” Shenyu nodded frantically, his hand eagerly gripping the doorknob.
Ning Chen’s voice came from behind him: “Shenyu, I got you dirty. You should go change your clothes…”
“I… I know…” Shenyu finally escaped. He closed the door and looked down at himself.
His knit sweater had turned nearly transparent after getting wet. It was soaking and clinging to his body—extremely uncomfortable. He hadn’t even noticed it until now.
It was all Ning Chen’s fault…
Shenyu felt like he could never look at the color pink the same way again…
He tugged at his clothes and resignedly went to the other bathroom to take another shower.
Ten minutes later, he emerged.
He had already bathed earlier; he was just rinsing off the suds Ning Chen had smeared on him, so he came out before Ning Chen.
Thinking about Ning Chen’s injured foot, he still felt uneasy. He decided to wait for him in the bedroom to check on him again.
To his surprise, he waited for nearly an hour. He was almost done reading a research paper, and Ning Chen still hadn’t come out.
He finally called out, “Ning Chen, is your foot bothering you? Why have you been in there so long? Do you need help?”
“No, Shenyu,” Ning Chen’s voice came through over the sound of the water, a bit muffled. He said, “I’ll be out in a second…”
Ning Chen did indeed come out shortly after. He had also washed his hair, which was likely why it took so long.
“Can you walk? Let me take another look.” Shenyu stood up and walked over to him.
Ning Chen shook his head. His cheeks were flushed red, likely from the heat of the water. “I’m fine, Shenyu. I can walk.”
Shenyu still wasn’t convinced. Now that Ning Chen was properly dressed in pajamas, the tension had dissipated. He crouched down and checked Ning Chen’s foot once more.
Ning Chen was distracted as he answered the questions. His face grew redder and redder. When He Shenyu looked up to speak to him, Ning Chen reached out and stroked his head.
“What are you doing?” Shenyu was stunned.
“I’m really fine, Shenyu.” Ning Chen applied a bit of pressure, his fingers threading through He Shenyu’s hair.
Shenyu caught his mischievous hand and stood up. “It does look fine. We’ll check again when you wake up tomorrow.”
“Okay.” Ning Chen nodded, climbed into bed, and covered himself with the duvet.
Seeing him settled, He Shenyu went to the living room to grab his tablet and joined him in bed.
“Is your winter break coming up soon?” He Shenyu asked, checking the date.
Ning Chen looked at him and nodded. “Yeah, soon.”
Shenyu opened the calendar, carefully recalling the plot.
The scene where Fu Hengzhan and Ning Chen argue should be right at the start of the next semester. It was almost time.
He had a bad feeling. The Plot God’s methods were becoming more blatant. Last time, it had erased Fu Hengzhan’s thoughts right in front of him, as if it didn’t care at all that he knew.
Shenyu didn’t know how the plot would unfold, but he felt the Plot God might become increasingly obvious.
Even though he had transmigrated, he was ultimately just a mortal without any “cheat codes.” He had no confidence in fighting the God of the Plot.
But he had to fight. He could not allow the story to return to the original path. He and the Plot God had irreconcilable differences.
Shenyu glanced at Ning Chen, feeling uneasy.
Ning Chen looked at him and said, “Shenyu, I might stay on campus during winter break. Not for a part-time job, but to work on a project with my professor.”
Shenyu nodded. “That’s good. More project experience is always helpful.”
“Mhm,” Ning Chen nodded. “I might come home later. You don’t have to wait up for me, Shenyu.”
Shenyu sighed. “Is university that competitive for you guys?”
Ning Chen frowned at him. “Wasn’t it competitive when you were in school?”
“It… it was.” Shenyu realized he had almost slipped up again…
Luckily, Ning Chen didn’t seem to notice…
…
There was nothing seriously wrong with Ning Chen’s foot; it was better by the next day. However, he was indeed very busy lately, coming home late almost every day except for weekends.
Shenyu reviewed the timeline and had a different idea. He wondered if he could avoid the plot by giving Ning Chen a “spoiler.”
He analyzed the situation: if he told Ning Chen directly, he might be silenced. But what about written words?
This was inspired by Ning Chen; last time, Ning Chen seemed able to see what he was typing on the computer. Maybe he couldn’t say it out loud, but leaving a note with information might work.
Shenyu knew this was a bold move, but if that plot point couldn’t be avoided, Ning Chen would break his leg and suffer from chronic pain every time it rained. He really didn’t want Ning Chen to go through that.
By comparison, the punishment for “spoiling” would more likely fall on him. So, He Shenyu decided to try.
Finally, it was the weekend again, and Ning Chen would be back earlier.
Shenyu prepared a note in advance and placed it on his laptop. He sat in the living room, waiting for Ning Chen to return.
“Shenyu, I’m home.” Ning Chen put down his bag and took off his coat.
Shenyu took it for him and asked, “Is it cold outside?”
“Yes,” Ning Chen nodded. “The temperature dropped tonight.”
Shenyu led Ning Chen to the sofa, and they sat together for a while. Then, he started his plan: “Ning Chen, could you grab my laptop for me? A colleague just asked for some data.”
“Okay.” Ning Chen never refused He Shenyu on such small matters. He was a person accustomed to hard work.
Unlike He Shenyu, who was sometimes too lazy to move; even if his mother asked him to grab something, he’d feel a bit reluctant.
Shenyu kept his eyes glued to the bedroom door. He was both expectant and excited. He didn’t know how the Plot God would handle this.
Ning Chen’s expression was the same as always. He walked over and handed the laptop to He Shenyu. “Here you go, Shenyu.”
Shenyu couldn’t tell if he was disappointed or something else. He pressed on, “Ning Chen, did you see anything on my laptop?”
“I did,” Ning Chen nodded. “There was a note on it. I took it off. Why do you need to use it?”
Shenyu got excited and grabbed Ning Chen’s arm. “Did you see what was written on it?”
Ning Chen shook his head in confusion. “No. It was blank. There were no traces of writing at all. I even picked it up to look; there was nothing on the back either.”
Shenyu was completely deflated. He set the laptop and tablet aside and lay down flat. “This is so boring…”
“What’s wrong, Shenyu?” Ning Chen looked down at He Shenyu lying on his lap and stroked his hair. “Was the note important? Should I go get it for you?”
Shenyu shook his head and caught his hand. “No need. It wasn’t very important. Sigh, Ning Chen, if only you could see what I was thinking…”
Ning Chen froze for a second, staring at him blankly, and replied, “I wish I could see it, too.”
“Hmm?” Shenyu didn’t think much of it. He waved his hand tiredly and groaned, “I’m exhausted, Ning Chen. I’m about to expire right here…”
“What?” Ning Chen didn’t quite understand the slang. He just saw He Shenyu close his eyes and assumed he wanted to sleep, so he stopped bothering him.
“Sleep, Shenyu. I’ll hold you.” Ning Chen stroked his hair.
The professor was busy today, so they were let out early. At this moment, the curtains weren’t closed yet, and some of the sunset glow was still visible in the sky. An airplane flew through the clouds—a beautiful sight.
The air was silent. Ning Chen looked down at He Shenyu. He knew the man’s habits; his hands were relaxed now, so he must have really fallen asleep.
Shenyu always slept well. For some reason, he was like a cat—lazy all day, enjoying leaning on people, and loving sleep.
Ning Chen gently stroked his cheek and planted a kiss on his lips.
He was beginning to wonder what to do with Shenyu. Because Shenyu was so shy, his “seduction” career seemed to be at a standstill. But if he took the lead, he was afraid his blunt desires would actually scare Shenyu away.
There probably isn’t a more ‘pure’ benefactor in the world than Shenyu…
Thinking back to his worries when he was first “sponsored,” Ning Chen felt a bit of bitterness. He actually wished Shenyu were a lecherous benefactor now—that way, their progress would be faster.
Now, it seemed the roles were reversed…
Ning Chen swallowed, tilted He Shenyu’s chin up, and kissed him again.
When it comes to secret kisses, if there’s a first, there’s a second. And if there’s a second, there’s a third…
