Chapter 20: The Confrontation
This time, Ning Chen was clearly more focused, his gaze fixed on He Shenyu with intense seriousness.
As they kissed, Ning Chen felt He Shenyu’s legs grow weak. He simply wrapped an arm around the doctor’s waist and pulled him onto his lap.
This made the kiss even more effortless. Seeing He Shenyu staring back blankly, allowing himself to be maneuvered, the smile on Ning Chen’s lips deepened. He cupped He Shenyu’s face with his left hand and held his waist firmly with his right, kissing him deeply and wantonly.
His technique was born from He Shenyu’s “lesson” moments ago, but now, he was clearly adding plenty of knowledge he had taught himself. He sucked on He Shenyu’s lips, tasting every inch of soft flesh, his tongue teasing until He Shenyu felt weak and numb.
By the end, He Shenyu barely moved, simply leaning against Ning Chen and letting him have his way. Ning Chen pulled back gently, his index finger tracing He Shenyu’s face repeatedly as he gave a satisfied smile.
Regardless of anything else, this was the first step in fulfilling his obligations. Shenyu has been kissed senselessly; he should be satisfied, right?
Ning Chen felt that Manager Cheng’s training had been inadequate; they hadn’t discussed kissing much. Then again, it was something he should study on his own. He just hadn’t thought about it before because he had no use for it.
Shenyu leaned quietly in his embrace for a long time without moving. Ning Chen looked down and touched He Shenyu’s burning cheek. Listening to the frantic thudding of the heart in the chest against his, Ning Chen couldn’t help but think:
Perhaps I wasn’t wrong before. Perhaps He Shenyu truly does like me…
He didn’t want to obsess over the kind of liking it was. At the very least, He Shenyu liked his physical appearance. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have tried to steal a kiss while he was sleeping.
Perhaps He Shenyu was telling the truth when he said he had never been in a relationship—is that why he was so shy the first time he got close to someone?
Ning Chen decided he would try harder in the future. If he sensed He Shenyu’s desire, he should be more proactive and be a “qualified” canary. This was his livelihood, after all; it was only right to perform these acts to please his superior.
Furthermore, he found it impossible to dislike He Shenyu. Initially, Ning Chen feared he was the kind of rich heir Manager Cheng warned him about. But now it was clear he wasn’t like that at all. He didn’t even complain about being tired after climbing Pagoda Mountain for so long; he was nothing like those arrogant “Chosen Ones.”
Ning Chen had to admit that at this very moment, he had shed all the labels he’d previously attached to He Shenyu and was finally seeing him clearly. Shenyu was truly a good person. Setting aside the “sugar daddy” arrangement, he was a perfect template for a doctor. Sometimes, he was even adorably genuine.
Ning Chen thought to himself that he wouldn’t mind providing “services” to such a person. Perhaps when the contract expired, they could even part ways on good terms. He would definitely work harder to make He Shenyu happy.
“Ning Chen…”
The person in his arms still hid his face, refusing to look up, but suddenly called his name.
Ning Chen looked down and replied softly, “Mhm, I’m here.”
Shenyu was too embarrassed to show his face. However, he was worried about something else, so he forced himself to ask, “Check and see if anyone is outside looking for me.”
“Huh?” Ning Chen looked toward the door. The hallway was empty. He replied, “No one.”
“Oh, okay.” Shenyu nuzzled into Ning Chen’s chest, refusing to get up. His face had gone beyond red; he truly didn’t want to be seen by anyone.
Ning Chen lightly gripped his waist and asked, “Isn’t Shenyu off work already?”
“Yeah. I’m off,” He Shenyu answered.
“Then… shall we go back?”
Shenyu thought for a moment and answered vaguely, “Let’s… let’s wait a little longer.”
He couldn’t leave yet. Wait, calm down. There’s serious business to do! I can’t keep avoiding it!
Shenyu stood up from Ning Chen’s lap and gulped down several mouthfuls of water from his desk. Only then did he feel like he had returned to reality. He looked out the window, letting the cold air from the AC blow on his face until his temperature finally dropped.
He set the empty cup back on the desk and looked at Ning Chen. “Ning Chen, wait for me a bit longer. I have to go see a patient.”
Ning Chen nodded. “Okay.”
As he stepped out of the room, He Shenyu finally breathed a sigh of relief. Honestly, he felt his sacrifice was a bit too great. While Ning Chen was incredibly handsome and kissing him wasn’t a “loss” by any means…
But I’m straight!
There was a huge difference between admiring a beauty and personally having intimate interactions with one! He touched his lips and secretly decided that unless absolutely necessary, there would be no more kissing.
Firstly, he wasn’t used to it. Secondly, this was an intimate act. Although he had the “sugar daddy” status and such behavior was technically normal, he didn’t want to lead Ning Chen astray. Ning Chen was only nineteen; his life had been a blank slate of studying and part-time jobs. A hardworking kid like him, barring accidents, should have a bright future. At the very least, he should be an upwardly mobile commoner with a happy, normal life.
Even if this book had set Ning Chen as naturally gay, he deserved to find someone he truly loved and live a normal, happy life with them. Shenyu was destined to be a passing traveler in Ning Chen’s life; once the contract ended, even being friends might be awkward.
Perhaps on that day, he could tell Ning Chen the whole truth—including the fact that they were in a book. If Ning Chen could still accept him then, they might actually be friends. That was the best ending He Shenyu could imagine.
Once his mission was complete, would he be able to return to his own world? Maybe not. But this world was a parallel one; it wouldn’t be so bad to wander around here alone.
“Director, President Fu is here. He’s waiting for you in the large conference room.”
Turning a corner, He Shenyu ran into his assistant.
“Right, I know.” Shenyu took a breath and followed the assistant.
He hadn’t misheard; Fu Hengzhan had indeed arrived. However, perhaps because he saw He Shenyu and Ning Chen kissing, Fu Hengzhan hadn’t knocked and had left for the conference room instead.
This was excellent news for He Shenyu. It meant Fu Hengzhan was still maintaining his original character archetype. Regardless of what he was thinking, he kept up a facade of decency and didn’t do anything out of line. This meant He Shenyu still had room to maneuver.
Shenyu’s heart lightened slightly. A bolder thought occurred to him: What if I don’t solve it through Ning Chen, but solve Fu Hengzhan directly?
If he told Fu Hengzhan that he was living in a novel and all his actions were subconsciously influenced by a plot, a man of his character would likely find that intolerable, right? The logic held up, but He Shenyu didn’t dare bet on it. Fu Hengzhan’s power was too immense. If he found out he was the “Protagonist” of the world and became even more lawless, that would be a catastrophe…
Shenyu sighed. The tragedy of transmigrating as a side character was the limited influence one could have. The only good news was that Ning Chen was already very different from his original novel counterpart, and there was no sign of plot pressure on him yet. This proved the “Plot God’s” influence wasn’t direct. In other words, human effort could still triumph over fate.
Don’t be pessimistic. As long as I persist, there’s a way.
Shenyu pumped himself up, put on a professional smile, and knocked on the conference room door.
“Come in,” Fu Hengzhan’s voice called out.
The assistant opened the door, and He Shenyu stepped inside.
“Doctor He, here is the report.” Fu Hengzhan acted as if nothing had happened, handing He Shenyu the paper report. His laptop was open in front of him; he had likely been working while waiting.
Seeing that he didn’t mention the incident, He Shenyu didn’t bring it up either. If he wanted to know the outcome, he just had to wait quietly; there was no need to go looking for trouble.
Shenyu took out the scans, examined them carefully, and began explaining them to Fu Hengzhan page by page. The result was mild inflammation—nothing serious. Shenyu wrote a prescription and handed it over. Both were strictly professional, and the process was quick.
Shenyu asked, “President Fu, is there anything else you need at the hospital?”
Fu Hengzhan shook his head. “Nothing major. I took a look at the semi-annual financial reports while waiting; they met expectations.”
“Understood. Then I’ll—” Shenyu started to stand up.
But Fu Hengzhan reached out to stop him. “Wait. I have a private matter to discuss with you.”
Shenyu’s heart skipped a beat. He sat back down, filled with trepidation. “What is it?”
Fu Hengzhan closed his laptop and looked at him. “I’ve already had someone look into it. Ning Chen is the college student Song Zhi planned to send to me that day. You don’t need to hide it; Manager Cheng won’t risk offending me for your sake, so don’t bother looking for him.”
“Oh? I really didn’t know that,” Shenyu took a deep breath and lowered his voice. “President Fu, to tell you the truth, I knew Ning Chen before. I just didn’t expect to run into him that day. I thought he was getting into trouble, so I took him away.”
“Is that so?” Fu Hengzhan mused. There were no obvious holes in He Shenyu’s story. He had also asked Song Zhi; it was indeed impossible for He Shenyu to know in advance who was being sent.
“Let’s not obsess over the details,” Fu Hengzhan said deeply. “I’m very interested in him. How about you hand him over to me?”
Shenyu’s forehead was soaked with sweat. He didn’t know where Fu Hengzhan’s bottom line was, so he didn’t know how to answer. After a long silence, He Shenyu looked at Fu Hengzhan and said sincerely, “President Fu, I’m serious about him. He likes me too. We’ve… already done everything.”
“Really? That fast…” Fu Hengzhan looked up at him and chuckled, resting his chin on his hand. “I thought you were just playing around… haven’t you always dated women before?”
Shenyu’s lies were becoming increasingly smooth. “Ning Chen is just too handsome. I couldn’t resist.”
“Heh…” Fu Hengzhan gave a light laugh. “Fine. Don’t mind me; act as if I said nothing today. Bring him along next time we go out.”
“Of course, President Fu.” The tense string in He Shenyu’s mind finally relaxed. That’s another hurdle cleared, right?
