I Secretly Read My Boss' Diary (GL) - Chapter 16
Yan Zhao woke up without dreams, with an hour left before work.
With a groan, Yan Zhao sprang out of bed and rushed to the bathroom. After a hasty wash, she grabbed her bag and bolted downstairs.
She sprinted to the community gate in one breath. Just as she was about to dash toward the subway entrance, a car horn blared beside her.
Yan Zhao instinctively turned her head and saw a familiar car parked by the roadside. Bent over, gasping for breath, she glanced inside and saw Gong Muyu waving at her.
“General Manager Mu, what are you doing here?” Yan Zhao panted, fastening her seatbelt.
Gong Muyu glanced at Yan Zhao’s disheveled hair, knowing she’d overslept again.
“I was just dropping off some documents for someone and happened to be passing by,” she explained, handing Yan Zhao a bag from the back seat. “I got you a cup of soy milk and two buns. The soy milk is too sweet for my taste, so I’ll let you have it.”
Yan Zhao stared blankly at the unopened bag, wondering if Gong Muyu had actually opened it. But Gong Muyu had already started the car and was focused on driving, so Yan Zhao didn’t dare disturb her. Muttering a distracted “thanks,” she opened the bag and began eating.
Gong Muyu glanced sideways at Yan Zhao, who was hunched over her buns, and couldn’t help but smile.
When the two arrived at the company entrance, there were still twenty minutes before the official start time.
Yan Zhao ran her fingers through her messy hair and sighed involuntarily. Just then, footsteps approached from behind. Before she could turn around, a hand patted her right shoulder.
She instinctively looked back, but no one was there. When she turned fully, she saw Sun Yiming standing with a mischievous grin to her left, startling her so much that she took a step back.
“Manager Sun, you scared me half to death!”
Gong Muyu, who had been walking ahead, heard Yan Zhao’s exclamation and stopped to look back at her.
Seeing Yan Zhao still looking nervously at Sun Yiming, it was clear she had been startled by his sudden appearance.
“Yan Zhao, are you still here?”
Sun Yiming noticed Gong Muyu had stopped and felt obligated to greet her.
“Good morning, General Manager Mu.”
Gong Muyu nodded in acknowledgment before asking, “Manager Sun, are the financial reports for July, August, and September ready to be sent to me?”
Though Sun Yiming was highly capable, he often procrastinated. Now that General Manager Mu was pressing him about the reports, he felt a twinge of nervousness.
“Uh, I’ll send them right away.”
Hearing this, Gong Muyu nodded.
“As soon as possible. I want to see the three-month financial statements by noon. After all, the Finance Department needs to distribute salaries based on your reports. If we delay too long, how will the employees put food on the table?”
“Right, I understand. I’ll start right away.”
With that, Gong Muyu turned to leave. Seeing Yan Zhao still standing frozen in place, she couldn’t help but frown.
“What are you waiting for? Are you waiting to be docked for tardiness?!”
Yan Zhao hadn’t expected Gong Muyu’s ire to extend to her. Internally groaning, she kept silent and hurried after Gong Muyu upstairs.
Walking diagonally behind Gong Muyu, Yan Zhao glanced at her icy profile and couldn’t help but click her tongue.
Recalling her previous conversation with Dong Wan, she felt a surge of silent conviction.
Having read countless novels, she knew many authors wrote about the party who falls in love first finding excuses to attract the other’s attention.
Since so many fictional plots were rooted in reality, this suggested General Manager Mu might genuinely have feelings for Sun Yiming. That’s why she always found reasons to scold him during their meetings, hoping to capture his attention.
It seemed I’d have to keep my distance from Sun Yiming from now on, or I might end up getting burned myself!
Yan Zhao arrived at the office lost in thought. Taking advantage of a break while washing her cup, she pulled Dong Wan into the restroom.
Worried about a repeat of the previous disaster, Yan Zhao checked each stall to make sure they were alone before sharing what had just happened.
“I think your analysis last time was spot-on. It looks like General Manager Mu really has her eye on Manager Sun. I know you have feelings for him, but for the sake of your career, I’d advise you to move on. After all, you can’t fight city hall—you’re no match for General Manager Mu.”
With that, Yan Zhao patted Dong Wan’s shoulder like a seasoned veteran, nodding gravely as if imparting profound wisdom.
Dong Wan, her face twisted in misery, silently washed her cup and stormed out of the restroom without a word.
Watching Dong Wan’s disheveled figure retreat, Yan Zhao clicked his tongue sympathetically and sighed, “Ah, true love has always left only regrets.”
When Manager Sun focused, he was remarkably efficient. At 10:59 AM, he knocked on Gong Muyu’s door with the completed financial report in hand.
Huddled in the corner, Yan Zhao secretly peeked at the expression of the senior executive beside him. Using the excuse of refilling water, he slipped out of the office. Standing behind Sister V, he listened to them gossip about various company rumors.
When he heard that Gong Muyu’s father might be the owner of Qiongyang, Yan Zhao’s jaw nearly dropped.
“Is that even true? Our General Manager’s surname is Zhang, right? But General Manager Mu’s surname is Gong. How does that work?”
Fang Fang rolled her eyes at Yan Zhao’s question.
“You’re just inexperienced. Our General Manager has a very close relationship with his wife, who is an only child. So, when General Manager Mu was born, she took her mother’s surname.”
“How did you find out about that?”
“Lao Wang mentioned it to me the other day when we were chatting about company matters.”
Lao Wang, the former General Manager before Gong Muyu’s arrival, had worked for the previous General Manager for many years. It wasn’t surprising that he knew some personal details about the family, which lent credibility to his words.
“Holy crap! She’s beautiful, capable, and a wealthy heiress to boot! How much merit did she accumulate in her past life to be reborn into such a privileged family?”
As Sister V sighed, Yan Zhao, holding her teacup, nodded vigorously, like a chick pecking for grain.
Then, remembering that General Manager Mu might be interested in Manager Sun, she turned and patted Dong Wan on the shoulder, slowly shaking her head.
Dong Wan was well aware that her own circumstances paled in comparison to the General Manager’s, making competition futile. Her eyes reddened as she slid her chair back and resumed her work.
Liu Yiyang noticed Dong Wan’s expression and found it peculiar. He gestured at Yan Zhao, asking her what was wrong with Dong Wan.
Yan Zhao, wary of commenting on Dong Wan’s doomed crush that had ended before it even began, simply shrugged at Liu Yiyang and returned to her post in the Operations Department, eager to keep enjoying the drama.
However, heaven had other plans. Before she could even reach for another piece of gossip, her phone rang from the General Manager’s Office.
Yan Zhao hurried over, cup in hand, but by the time she reached the doorway, Sun Yiming had already gone to her desk and answered the call.
