- Chapter 10 - The Villainess Saint and the Giant of the Wasteland
It came from beyond the horizon, a colossal figure easily mistaken for a mountain.
A rough-hewn golem, as if the parched earth itself had gained sentience. With each step, the ground trembled and the air quaked. The overwhelming pressure radiating from its massive form made me gasp.
(No way! I have to fight this thing now?)
This was on an entirely different level from the Knight of Despair. If that had been the incarnation of an individual’s despair, this was the coalescence of the land’s own rage and sorrow.
To make matters worse, my stamina and magic were nearly depleted from the previous battle.
(Back-to-back battles against a monster like this when I’m running on empty MP? What kind of unfair game is this!)
The moment I cursed inwardly, the giant raised its massive arm. Its shadow completely engulfed my tiny form.
BOOOOOM! The rocky fist struck the earth, sending out a shockwave and kicking up a storm of dust. I barely managed to leap backward in time, but the aftershock alone sent me staggering.
“Tch…!”
Counterattacking was impossible against something this enormous. Gripping my staff, I gathered what little magic remained.
“«Holy Strike»!”
The bolt of light struck the giant’s leg only to produce a dull thud as the stone armor remained completely unfazed. At best, a few flakes of dirt crumbled from the surface.
Too tough. At this rate, I wouldn’t just be fighting a losing battle, I’d be toyed with until death.
(Calm down, think! How did I defeat this thing in the game?)
Right. This boss, Wilder Gigas, the Giant of the Wasteland couldn’t be beaten through brute force alone. Somewhere on its body lay its sole weak point: the «Life Core».
But the core moved freely within the giant’s body, never staying in one place. How could I locate it?
Just then, in perfect sync with the giant’s movements, a voice echoed directly in my mind.
«Not strong enough.»
It was Liner’s voice. His desperate cries were linked to this giant.
«If I don’t get stronger the people the land will die!»
His overwhelming sense of responsibility. His impatience. And his agonizing, self-sacrificial drive to push himself beyond his limits.
Liner’s «will» resided within the giant’s movements. The core had to be where his desire to protect burned brightest.
The giant pounded its chest with both fists and roared at the heavens as if raging at itself for failing to save the land.
And in that instant, I didn’t miss it. For the briefest moment, the center of the giant’s chest emitted a faint emerald glow.
(There!)
The weak point was its chest. But it was far too high up. An attack from the ground would never reach it.
In that case, there was only one option.
I took a desperate gamble.
As the giant’s arm swung down again, I didn’t dodge instead, I deliberately stepped into its trajectory.
A split second before its fist struck the earth, I kicked off the ground and leaped onto its craggy, rocky arm.
(Uwooooh! What is this, some kind of 3D maneuvering action!?)
Screaming internally, I scrambled up the giant’s arm. The footing was unstable, and I barely kept myself from being thrown off. Below me, the cracked earth grew farther and farther away. A fall from this height would mean instant death.
The giant noticed the foreign object clinging to its arm and shook violently to fling me off.
But it was too late! I reached its shoulder and locked onto the exposed «Life Core» before me, a beautiful, fragile emerald crystal pulsing with light.
I had almost no magic left. There was no way I could muster the power for my ultimate move, «Dawnbreaker».
I adjusted my grip on my staff, holding it like a reverse dagger.
“If that kindness of yours is what’s destroying you!”
With the last of my strength, I shouted.
“Then I’ll correct that distortion with my own hands!”
As I declared this, I launched myself from the giant’s shoulder. Putting my full weight behind it, I drove the tip of my staff, wreathed in light like a spear straight into the «Life Core».
CRACK! A high-pitched shattering sound rang out.
A solid hit.
The next instant, the giant’s roar ceased, and I felt the immense power draining from its body. The emerald glow faded, and the rocks and earth composing its form began crumbling apart with a grating rumble.
At the same time, my body succumbed to gravity, falling alongside the giant’s collapsing remains.
I had no strength left to move even a finger. As the crimson-black sky rapidly grew more distant, my consciousness plunged into complete darkness.
