I Raise My Wife in a Supernatural Story (Infinite) - Chapter 25
The snow-white fox leaped onto the chair and settled down, casting a cold glance at the person sitting beside her.
Qi Yan was mixing rice for this esteemed ancestor. The freshly made braised pork rice smelled irresistibly delicious evident from the way the fox kept stealing glances at the bowl. She was clearly craving it.
“Alright, it’s ready to eat.”
The freshly mixed rice in the bowl was still steaming, but Bai Qing merely glanced at it with her narrow fox eyes before haughtily lifting her head.
Qi Yan took a big bite herself. The braised pork rice was as delicious as ever, and she nodded in satisfaction.
Noticing that the fox beside her wasn’t eating, Qi Yan was puzzled. “Why aren’t you eating? Doesn’t it smell good?”
Of course, it wasn’t that it didn’t smell good. Bai Qing had an excellent nose and had caught the enticing aroma of food the moment she woke up. Following the scent to the kitchen, she found that someone had already prepared the meal.
The reason she wasn’t eating now was simply a matter of pride.
Qi Yan studied her expression. Although foxes didn’t have as rich a range of expressions as humans, she felt this particular fox was different every look conveyed her mood clearly.
Sitting there primly without eating, Qi Yan felt a little awkward enjoying the meal alone, so she struck up a conversation. “So, how long will it take for you to recover like this?”
The fox looked up at her. “Recover what?”
“Your human form! You can’t stay like this forever, can you?”
Bai Qing replied, “Of course not. I’ve just overexerted my spiritual energy and need a few more days to recuperate.”
Qi Yan pressed further, “Then you’re not seriously hurt or anything, right?”
Bai Qing: “I’m fine.”
“Whew, that’s good, that’s good.” Qi Yan sighed in relief.
Having gone the whole day without eating and expending a great deal of energy in the storybook, Qi Yan was starving. She devoured her meal like a whirlwind.
As she prepared to clear the dishes, she noticed Bai Qing still hadn’t taken a single bite.
A question mark popped up in Qi Yan’s mind. “Does it really not suit your taste?”
Bai Qing shook her head and instead asked, “Are you done eating?”
“Yes.”
“Then go back to your room.”
“?”
Qi Yan pointed at the dishes on the table. “I still need to clean up.”
“You can do that later!”
Qi Yan scratched her head. “What about you?”
Bai Qing didn’t answer, merely lowering her gaze to the food in the bowl. At that moment, Qi Yan had an epiphany.
The Demon King had her pride. Eating in fox form probably made her feel like a weak, domesticated animal, so she didn’t want to do it in front of her.
Realizing this, Qi Yan found her utterly adorable and couldn’t help but stare a little longer, her gaze growing increasingly tender.
Bai Qing was pure white, her fur flawless without a single stray color. Unlike ordinary snow foxes, her fox form had faint red markings around her eyes, especially at the outer corners, where the hue was most pronounced. What surprised Qi Yan even more were her heterochromatic eyes.
“Have you looked enough?” Bai Qing shot her a sidelong glare, growing impatient.
Qi Yan quickly averted her gaze and shuffled out of the dining area, heading to the living room to wait for her to finish eating.
While waiting, Qi Yan pulled out her phone and, as if possessed, searched online “fox with heterochromatic eyes.”
The results that popped up pointed to Arctic snow foxes with blue-and-gold heterochromatic eyes.
Qi Yan stared at the photo that popped up on the search engine for a long while, thinking this type of fox looked quite similar to Bai Qing, but there were still differences. For instance, Bai Qing’s fur was exceptionally fine not a single stray hair coupled with those naturally enchanting red-tinted eye corners.
Qi Yan felt she was the most beautiful little creature she’d ever seen in her life.
So adorable!
Suddenly overwhelmed by a surge of girlish affection, Qi Yan rolled around on the sofa.
“Are you practicing some strange cultivation technique right now?”
A cool voice sounded by her ear. Qi Yan, still mid-roll, froze instantly. She looked up to see a certain fox squatting by the sofa, eyeing her with disdain.
“Haha. You’re done eating already?” Qi Yan scrambled upright, casually smoothing her tousled long hair.
Bai Qing gave an “Mmm” before leaping onto the sofa to sit properly, saying nothing more.
Qi Yan curled her knees and leaned against the sofa, turning to study Bai Qing. She opened her mouth, then hesitated.
“Ask whatever you want. Stop dithering.”
“Ah.” Given permission, Qi Yan couldn’t help but blurt out first: “Your eyes. I remember in the instance, they weren’t heterochromatic.”
She distinctly remembered the Bai Qing from the storybook had pale golden eyes.
Bai Qing adjusted her posture, lazily stretching out as she explained, “When in human form, I’m accustomed to disguising myself a little. Though it’s not strictly necessary would save some spiritual energy too.”
Qi Yan tilted her head. “Were you worried about scaring me?”
“Pfft. You’ve already been to that kind of place. Why would I worry about scaring you?”
Fair point.
Qi Yan felt she might have been reading too much into it.
“When moving through human society in human form, I naturally conceal my true eye color. Your kind makes far too big a deal about such things,” Bai Qing added, though it still sounded somewhat forced. It was unclear what exactly she was concerned about.
“Well, humans rarely see heterochromia.” Qi Yan muttered under her breath. Noticing Bai Qing’s sidelong glance, she quickly changed the subject: “How much longer will you stay like this?”
“Not sure. Might need two more days to recover.” Bai Qing said, “Fortunately, being near you speeds up my recovery.”
Qi Yan looked puzzled. “I can actually help that way?”
Bai Qing chuckled lightly. “We’ve formed a spiritual pact. You’re the most beneficial for me.”
She was merely stating a fact, yet Qi Yan’s heart raced, cheeks flushing. Human emotions were inherently more complex and nuanced than animals’, prone to overthinking and easily swept into emotional whirlpools.
“Enough of that. Let’s discuss the storybook. Since you successfully cleared this instance, based on my limited understanding, you should’ve received some rewards, no? Did you get anything?” Bai Qing lifted her face to look at the person beside her, only to find her sitting there dazed cheeks pink, eyes glazed, breathing slightly quicker than usual.
Qi Yan had been staring fixedly at Bai Qing taking in her snow-white fur, those unusually beautiful blue-and-gold heterochromatic eyes, her fluffy, plush paw pads.
So cute!
“Hey?”
“Hey!”
Bai Qing raised a front paw and swatted at Qi Yan’s thigh in annoyance. “Are you even listening to me?”
The touch of the furry paw didn’t hurt at all; instead, it sent a strange, tingling sensation through her.
Qi Yan inwardly admitted she simply couldn’t resist soft, adorable little creatures!
Even if said little creature was currently glaring at her in a huff.
“Ah, what did you just say?”
Bai Qing was exasperated and raised her paw to swat at her again: “I said rewards! Aren’t there rewards for clearing the beginner script?”
“Oh, right! Yes, there are. Before you woke up, the [Narration] came to me. It gave me 350 points, plus three divination slips, and unlocked the shop.”
As she spoke, she pulled out the three slips. “I haven’t opened them yet. Do you think I should save up a few more before drawing? Maybe do a ten-pull or something?”
Bai Qing chuckled lightly. “These slips can only yield points, or they might give you really good weapons, equipment, or items. It doesn’t matter how many you save up before drawing, the odds are the same.”
“They can just give points?”
“Mhm. Useful items aren’t something you can just casually pull. You’d need incredibly strong luck for that.”
“My luck stat is 99!”
“Seeing as you managed to break my seal and form a contract with me, your luck really is quite good.”
This person, how could she switch to praising herself so seriously mid-conversation?
But she was still so adorable!
Maybe it was because Bai Qing was in her fox form, but Qi Yan found everything about her, from the tips of her ears to the pads of her paws, utterly endearing!
“Don’t waste your points recklessly they’re very useful for both of us. You used a lot of your vital energy to help me recover my spiritual power this time. You should understand how crucial it is.”
Her tone was serious, so Qi Yan set aside her other thoughts and nodded solemnly. “Since we’ve formed this spiritual contract and I can use my vital energy to help you recover, does that mean I should just exchange all my points for vital energy? Wouldn’t that let you return to your peak condition really quickly?”
Her thinking was naive, but reality was far from that simple.
Bai Qing shook her head. “We can’t rush this. It’s not something that can be hurried. Staying by your side helps with my cultivation, but that doesn’t mean constantly channeling your vital energy into me will instantly restore all my spiritual power. For us demons, that kind of forced growth is no different from pulling up seedlings to help them grow. Besides, how much vital energy do you think you actually have? You’ve already tried it in the script using your vital energy to restore my spiritual power left you completely exhausted, and I only recovered ten percent. It’s not a worthwhile trade.”
Qi Yan lowered her gaze, somewhat frustrated.
Bai Qing continued, “A human’s vital energy is ultimately limited. Even a trained Taoist wouldn’t have enough to provide me with an endless supply. There’s no need for you to feel upset about it.”
She could actually read her emotions Qi Yan was surprised.
Bai Qing, however, said nonchalantly, “Our hearts are connected. It’s not hard for me to know what you’re thinking.”
Oh right, she’d forgotten about that.
Then, recalling Bai Qing’s reaction when the seal was first broken, she suddenly asked, “Back when we first met, you looked down on me so much was it because I’m not a cultivator? A regular human can’t offer you much help, right?”
By now, Bai Qing had settled down, resting her front paws on Qi Yan’s legs, her fluffy head resting on them as she gazed up at her.
“At the time, yes.”
Bai Qing’s honesty made Qi Yan feel a pang of disappointment.
But before she could show it, the white fox added, “Lately, I’ve started to change my mind a little.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“Nothing, I just feel like you’re not ordinary. Between us there seems to be an unusual compatibility. Not only does being near you help me recover quickly, but even your life force feels like the best and most harmonious kind for me, Hmm. I don’t know how to describe it. To put it simply, it’s like you’re a specially tailored elixir for me.”
Qi Yan was completely stunned. She never imagined that she was so beneficial to Bai Qing?
She immediately straightened her back.
Bai Qing glanced at her suddenly proud expression and resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
But Qi Yan was quick to seize the moment and climb higher, saying, “Am I amazing? See, you’re not even rolling your eyes at me anymore!”
Bai Qing: “Then I’ll roll them now.”
“Ugh, you no, you as a demon always go out of your way to pick on me! Even though I’m clearly super impressive.”
Bai Qing chuckled lightly. “I can’t tell how impressive you are, but I have to admit, we are very compatible.”
Qi Yan fell silent again, thinking for a moment before asking quietly, “Then is it because of the spiritual contract between us? Once this bond is formed, wouldn’t anyone be compatible with you?”
The white fox lowered her head to lick her paw, then glanced sideways at her. “Do you know how many human-demon unions I’ve witnessed over the centuries that ended in tragedy? A spiritual contract is no trivial matter. Sometimes, even when both parties enter it willingly, they still meet a bitter end. That’s often due to a lack of innate compatibility or, in human terms, simply missing the right ‘fate.’”
Ever sharp at picking up key points, Qi Yan narrowed her eyes skeptically and summarized, “So you’re saying we’re a match made in heaven?”
Bai Qing: “…”
The fox simply closed her eyes and refused to speak further.
“Hey, why are you ignoring me again?”
“Sleeping.”
“You’ve been sleeping all day!”
“I need rest.” The snow fox flicked her ears.
Qi Yan had no choice. “Then go sleep in the bedroom, not the living room.”
“The bedroom has a draft.”
“What?” Qi Yan was shocked, jumping up from the sofa. “Where’s the draft? My room has a draft???”
How could she not know? Even if the apartment was old, it couldn’t possibly be so run-down as to have drafts!
Bai Qing: “By the window. There’s a white thing that keeps blowing air.”
By the window? A white thing?
Qi Yan thought carefully before suddenly realizing what she meant and was utterly speechless. “That’s the air conditioner.”
The fox’s ears perked up. Bai Qing opened her eyes and asked, “What’s an air conditioner?”
“Well, how to explain it? It’s a modern high-tech appliance used to regulate room temperature. It’s not extremely hot yet, but during the peak of summer, turning it on cools the room.”
The snow fox, covered in thick fur and particularly heat-sensitive, suddenly became alert. “Does it make summer cooler?”
“Of course! That’s what the air conditioner does!” Qi Yan waved at her. “Right now, I just have it on for dehumidifying. If you think it’s a draft, I won’t turn it on tonight. Come on, let’s go back to the bedroom. Don’t sleep in the living room.”
Bai Qing looked at her outstretched hand, touched it lightly with a front paw as a token gesture, then nimbly hopped down and strode gracefully toward the bedroom.
Qi Yan followed behind, watching her walk with such deliberate elegance, and couldn’t help but laugh.
Back in the room, Bai Qing curled up on the bed. She seemed genuinely exhausted, and considering she still couldn’t return to her human form, Qi Yan guessed her spiritual energy must be severely depleted.
So, she dimmed the lights and said, “I’m going to take a shower. You go ahead and sleep.”
The fox’s head bobbed slightly in agreement, as if urging her to hurry up and stop disturbing her.
The snow fox looked unbearably adorable like this. Suppressing the urge to ruffle her fur, Qi Yan turned and headed to the bathroom.
