I Quit Being This Female Lead (GL) - Chapter 50
Recently, because Mang Ke was frequently away from home for long periods, Xiao Zheย began to light the stove and cook for himself after school.
He didn’t know how to cook much. Every day, if no one came home by 6:00 PM, he would drag a small, low stool, stand on it, and start washing vegetables and cooking.
Cooking for an elementary school student was simple: at most, he would wash the greens, boil the water, put in instant noodles, then scatter some greens and crack an egg. A simple dinner was done.
If he got tired of instant noodles, he would stir-fry simple vegetarian dishes like potatoes, cauliflower, or scrambled eggs with tomatoes. He would also rinse rice and steam a pot in the rice cooker. The leftover rice could be for his parents or older sister if they came home late, or he could make egg-fried rice the next day if they had already eaten out.
Today, Xiao Zheย saw that no one was home after six. He skillfully turned on the kitchen light, brought over the low stool, and began rinsing rice. He planned to stir-fry eggs with tomatoes tonight. There was mushroom paste in the fridge, which could serve as a side dish.
Just as Xiao Zheย was standing on his tiptoes, using his small hands to rinse the rice in the sink, he heard the sound of a car braking outside the house.
Xiao Zheย looked back, turned off the faucet, picked up the stool, and ran to the door to look through the peephole.
Because all the houses were low single-story dwellings, the silver-white sedan was parked right outside his yard. When the car door opened, a woman with long black hair stepped out.
The woman seemed to be in a hurry. Her straight, distinct black hair reflected the faint, yellow light of the evening sun.
When the person got closer, she gently knocked on the small iron gate.
Knock knock knockโ
Xiao Zheย peered at the woman through the peephole and asked, “Who are you looking for?”
Jia Yunย didn’t expect anyone to answer so quickly after she knocked. It seemed they knew she was coming.
“I’m looking for Mang Ke.”
“She’s not home. Please come back another day.”
Jia Yunย paused. The voice sounded young, probably not older than 15, cutely tender.
“I’m here to drop something off for her,” Jia Yunย said. “You must be her younger brother. I’ll just leave the item and go.”
“Just leave it in the yard by the gate,” the person inside said. “She’ll see it herself when she comes back.”
Jia Yunย turned her head and saw a large vegetable patch in the yard, lush with greens, cabbage, and cauliflower. For a moment, she didn’t know how to refuse.
Xiao Zhe, still peering through the peephole, saw that she was reluctant and added, “Or, come back in a few days. My second sister has been very busy these days and comes back very late.”
Jia Yunย said doubtfully, “Your sister shouldn’t be working overtime today, logically. Why hasn’t she come back yet?”
“I don’t know. If you want to know, just call her.”
It seemed this child was absolutely determined not to let her in.
Jia Yunย wasn’t angry. She tried calling Mang Ke, but the call never connected.
Did something happen?
Jia Yunย couldn’t help but worry and left her a message: [Where are you? Why haven’t you returned yet?]
Mang Ke never replied.
Jia Yunย stood by the gate, arms crossed, walking back and forth twice before looking up at the door: “What’s your name?”
Inside the door: “Why are you asking?”
Jia Yun: “I’m just asking. I’m your sister’s manager, and I’m here to deliver something to her.”
Inside the door: “Just put the delivery in the yard.”
Jia Yunย couldn’t help but laugh. This child was quite vigilant. Realizing that there was no point in staying since Mang Ke wasn’t home, she pondered for a moment and then turned to leave.
Xiao Zheย watched through the peephole the entire time. Only after confirming that Jia Yunย had truly left did he relax his tiptoes and jump off the stool.
He picked up the small stool and hurried back to the sink, continuing to rinse the rice he hadn’t finished.
The white rice grains bobbed in the water. Xiao Zheย scooped them with his hand, washing away the impurities that had settled. After cleaning the rice three times until the water was completely clear, he began preparing to steam the rice.
He wiped the bottom of the pot dry, placed it in the rice cooker, and pressed the button.
Modern appliances were always convenient. Although Xiao Zheย was using a rice cooker that was ten years old, it still worked very well.
Opening the refrigerator, Xiao Zheย stared blankly at the ingredients inside.
What dish was he planning to stir-fry earlier?
Shredded potatoes?
Xiao Zheย scratched his head. He had been interrupted by the visitor, and he couldn’t remember what he intended to cook.
Never mind.ย It didn’t seem like a big deal.
Xiao Zheย took out two potatoes from the cabinet below, looked at them, chose the smaller one, and put the larger one back.
He took a potato peeler from the shelf next to the cabinet. As Xiao Zheย rolled up his sleeves to peel the potato, he heard the sound of a car braking again.
Then, a knocking sound rang out.
Xiao Zhe: “…”
Why couldn’t they just let him eat a proper meal?
He put down his bowl and chopsticks. Xiao Zheย ran over with the stool, his small feet pattering. As he ran, he shouted, “Second Sister is not home! Put the gift in the yard, and remember, first come, first served for queuing!”
Climbing onto the stool, Xiao Zheย saw that Mang Ke was already in the yard, looking at a large sea of flowers, peering left and right. She even picked up two bouquets and ran toward the house.
Seeing that it was family, Xiao Zheย moved the stool aside to let Mang Ke in.
“Why are there so many flowers in the yard?” Mang Ke asked, confused. “Did Mom and Dad stop selling Jianbing Guozi and switch careers?”
Xiao Zheย looked up at her and said, “Your admirers sent them.”
Mang Ke: “???”
Xiao Zheย continued, “They’re useless. How can they pursue you by only sending you things? Don’t they know they should break through by appealing to the family?”
Mang Ke: “??????????”
She really couldn’t understand what this child was saying anymore.
Xiao Zhe, like a small adult, crossed his arms and asked his second sister, “Have you decided who you want to be with? If you keep going like this, our family’s doorstep will be worn out.”
Mang Ke scratched her head and didn’t say a word.
“Let’s see if we can sell these flowers back to the florist. We can earn a price difference,” Xiao Zheย said seriously. “We shouldn’t let them send gifts for free.”
Mang Ke pondered for a moment and then said, “What a coincidence. I also earned a hundred million today.”
Xiao Zheย was stunned. He said, “Second Sister is still the best. Then let’s quickly pack up and move. Maybe if we change to a new place, someone else will send you money.”
Mang Ke: “…”
This child is truly not right!
