I Quit Being This Female Lead (GL) - Chapter 21
Mang Ke was back. This realization left her completely stunned.
Outside the window of her rental apartment, she could hear various familiar yet strange sounds: the sound of cars driving by, horns honking, and the loud voice of the neighborhood auntie yelling for her grandson. Distant and unfamiliar.
Mang Ke looked around, confirming several times that this was her home and not some other place. She got out of bed somewhat blankly, walked around the room in her slippers, and confirmed that it was indeed her apartment.
She was just with Xun Fangyun, so why was she suddenly back here? So strange…
Just as Mang Ke was wondering, the phone resting nearby suddenly rang.
Ring ring ring—
The noisy electronic sound was a little harsh and startled Mang Ke in the quiet room. Mang Ke walked to the table and slid the screen to answer the call.
“Congratulations on successfully completing the plot of a book. The remuneration will be transferred to your account as per the contract.” The voice on the phone was unfamiliar, but Mang Ke knew exactly what it meant.
“How… how did I get out?” Mang Ke sat on her chair, holding her phone, and said with some confusion: “I distinctly remember I was talking to Xun Fangyun…”
“Because the ending has been reached, you were arranged to come out.” The other party said calmly and cheerfully: “The two protagonists like and confess to each other—that’s the best ending, isn’t it?”
“But…”
“The relationship is clear, and the supporting character has withdrawn. With both of these conditions met, the story after they get together is irrelevant.”
Mang Ke lowered her head.
“You’ve worked hard this past month, and the money has been transferred to your account. The financial backer is very satisfied with this cooperation. Now you can enjoy your vacation.”
Mang Ke was momentarily stunned. The voice on the phone just mentioned ‘financial backer’ and ‘one month’? Did Mang Ke lie in bed for a whole month?! She quickly opened her phone to check the time. Although she had spent three or four months in the book, only one month had passed here.
“One month?!” Mang Ke couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise: “I was unconscious for that long?!” She lay unconscious for a month and didn’t starve to death!
Mang Ke subconsciously checked her body, wanting to see if she had developed any issues from hunger, but the person on the other end of the phone chuckled softly and continued: “There’s nothing wrong with your body. We arranged for people to take good care of you this past month.”
“What?”
“…It would be boring to continue talking. I believe we will meet again soon.” Without waiting for Mang Ke to speak, the other party hung up.
Watching the screen switch from the call interface back to the desktop, Mang Ke held her phone, feeling lost. A fleeting dream, this was probably the feeling. She had spent a very, very long time there, but upon opening her eyes, she found that everything was fake.
Mang Ke reached out and covered her chest. She was very sad now, for some reason. It was as if a piece had been suddenly dug out of her heart, making her feel so distressed she wanted to cry, but she couldn’t. Because she didn’t know who she could cry for.
The days she spent with Xun Fangyun… were all fake. Thinking of this, Mang Ke’s heart felt even emptier, impossible to fill…
At the same time.
In a villa only two blocks away from Mang Ke’s rental apartment. A group of people got out of a car. There were five of them in total, all wearing clean, neat white coats: two doctors and three nurses.
After getting out of the car, Si Nan (司南) cautiously looked around. This was a very quiet villa, with only a maid there to greet them.
“Hello.” The kind-faced middle-aged woman told Si Nan and the others: “I’ll lead you inside.”
Si Nan looked around, feeling somewhat bewildered, and was quietly chastised by the middle-aged man walking in front: “What are you looking at? Keep up.”
A nurse couldn’t help but chuckle softly behind Si Nan, then tugged on her white coat: “Xiao Nan, why are you so distracted today? Look how angry the director is.”
Si Nan couldn’t help but blush and told the nurse: “My friend lives nearby, and she hasn’t contacted me for almost a month. I’m a little worried about her…”
The nurse signaled Si Nan to follow her and whispered: “Is that the Mang Ke you talk about all the time?”
“Yes,” Si Nan nodded: “She usually wouldn’t ignore me for so long. I’m a bit concerned.”
“Then go see her after work. This patient has been asleep for seven or eight years. You can leave after the routine check-up.”
“Okay. It’s on my way, so I’ll go look for her. I’m really worried since she hasn’t contacted me in so long.”
Just as Si Nan was talking to the nurse, the head physician who had been walking ahead turned around unhappily: “Have you chatted enough? If you’re done, hurry up and follow. We’re here to see a patient, not to shop.”
Si Nan shrank her neck, quickly tucked her loose hair behind her ear, and hurried to catch up.
The group walked to the innermost room. The maid opened the door. Through the director’s shoulder, Si Nan saw that the dimly lit room only contained a bed and many medical instruments. Si Nan recognized some of the instruments, but others she had never seen before. However, without exception, they were all top-of-the-line medical equipment. It seemed the owner of this villa had converted the room into a private ICU.
A person was lying on the large, soft double bed. She lay there peacefully, her chest rising and falling with her breathing, looking as if she were merely sleeping. Si Nan stood still and looked at the girl. Before coming, she had heard about this patient. The patient was severely injured in an accident. After emergency rescue, her life was saved, but she fell into a permanent slumber, becoming a vegetative person.
As soon as they entered the room, the group skillfully began examining the girl on the bed. Si Nan was also instructed by the director to help with simple tasks like checking blood pressure. Si Nan looked at her skin, which was pale and lustrous from long-term lack of sunlight, and couldn’t help but ask: “Doesn’t she get sunlight? Why is she so pale?”
“Sometimes she does,” the maid in the room told Si Nan: “It’s just that the weather hasn’t been good lately, so we haven’t taken the young lady out to sunbathe.”
Si Nan turned back and instructed: “She still needs sunlight. The patient has been lying here for so long. Not getting sunlight can easily cause problems.”
“Yes, Doctor. We will take the young lady out to sunbathe when the weather is nice.”
“Mhm.”
The nurses couldn’t help but curve their lips, smiling: “Xiao Nan is becoming more and more like a doctor.”
Si Nan blushed slightly and said shyly: “I’m still an intern, so please don’t tease me, sisters.”
The five people worked for over an hour before finally completing the full body examination of the patient.
“Now you know the location,” the middle-aged man said to Si Nan as she packed up: “Starting next week, you will come here to perform the physical examination for Miss Xun, twice a week. You must be on time.”
Si Nan paused, then nodded: “Understood, Master.”
The middle-aged man looked at the young woman in front of him and relaxed his tone: “You still need to go see your friend, so you don’t need to come back to the hospital with us. You can clock out now.”
Si Nan’s eyes lit up, and she happily said: “Thank you, Master!”
The middle-aged man waved his hand, signaling her to leave quickly.
Si Nan handed her white coat and medical equipment to a nurse, saying with a smile: “I’ll be going now. Thank you for your hard work.”
The nurse chuckled: “Go quickly. Look how happy you are.”
Si Nan left the villa playfully, pulling out her phone to call Mang Ke while hailing a taxi.
“Hello, Mang Ke.” The call was answered quickly. Si Nan happened to see an empty taxi pull up in front of her, and she cheerfully asked: “You haven’t contacted me in a month. What’s going on? I’m near your house right now. Wait for me. Let’s have dinner together tonight.”
