I Need To Find A Way To Make Her Love Me Again - Chapter 30
Yan Xingyu keenly noticed that Xiao Yin repeatedly referred to “seeing which face of Yi Rong” rather than simply “seeing Yi Rong.” This struck her as subtle yet significant. A hypothesis formed in her mind as she asked, “When I was imprisoned by ‘Yi Rong’ before, did I ever ask her the question, ‘Who are you?'”
Though Xiao Yin didn’t understand why she was bringing up the past, it answered truthfully: “Master, you did say that.”
As expected. Yan Rou and Yi Rong had grown up together, how could Yan Rou not know if the person in the Nine Mysteries Palace was an impostor? From Xiao Yin’s words, it could be inferred that because the person wore Yi Rong’s face, Yan Rou had been hesitant and unable to strike back.
However, what likely rendered Yan Rou most helpless was that she knew who the person was. She chose to endure, holding onto a sliver of hope that the other party might turn from evil to good.
As she unraveled the threads, a specific face emerged in Yan Xingyu’s mind. Like the sun breaking through clouds, the mystery that had plagued her suddenly cleared. Though she had no physical proof yet, she understood that Xiao Yin spoke out of concern for her. She didn’t say much more to the spirit, but her determination to investigate the Yulan Palace grew stronger.
“Xiao Yin, don’t worry,” she said. “I know what I’m doing.”
“Alright, Master. I just hope you don’t get hurt again.”
“I know.”
Xiao Yin had given its warning; if its master insisted on a course of action, it could only follow.
Yan Xingyu turned to leave, intending to find Guan Fei to discuss the matter. Following directions to Jiao Yu’s courtyard, she found the doors tightly shut. She wondered to herself, Are these two sleeping in the middle of the day?
She walked up and knocked. “Little one? Guan Fei? Are you awake?”
There was a sound from inside. After a moment, the door opened. Jiao Yu looked out, saw it was only Yan Xingyu, and asked, “What are you doing here?”
“What are you two doing with the doors shut in broad daylight?” Yan Xingyu stepped naturally into the room. She saw Guan Fei sitting at the table, noting that her usually pristine green robes were somewhat wrinkled. “Guan Fei, how long did it take you to repair my spiritual veins? I felt like I just took a nap and lost all track of time.”
“About half a month has passed,” Guan Fei replied.
Yan Xingyu was stunned. “That long? No wonder you haven’t had time to change, your clothes are all crumpled.”
Guan Fei paused, then smiled. “Is that so? I didn’t notice. I’ll change after bathing tonight.”
“Mhm. You’ve worked hard these days. I feel full of spiritual energy now, like I’m bursting with strength. Luckily I had you, or I don’t know how long I would’ve spent feeling half-dead.”
“Xingyu, I’m just glad you’ve recovered.”
“Thanks, Guan Fei. Actually, I came to discuss something with you.”
“What is it?”
“I want to return to Yulan Palace. Once I’ve rested for a few days, could you accompany me?”
Seeing a look of hesitation on Guan Fei’s face, Yan Xingyu asked, “Guan Fei, is something wrong?”
Guan Fei sighed softly. “Xingyu, I cannot accompany you this time. I have to return home tomorrow.”
“Oh? So suddenly? Did something happen?”
“The matter with the Huos Beast reached my mother’s ears. I have to give her an explanation.”
Yan Xingyu thought of Guan Fei’s status and recalled her mother from Yi Rong’s memories, a woman who seemed connected to the sovereigns of the other two mountains. If word got out that Guan Fei had killed the Huos Beast, there would be trouble.
“Then I’ll go home with you first,” Yan Xingyu offered. “If push comes to shove, just say I did it. I’m already a wanted woman anyway.”
Guan Fei appreciated the sentiment and smiled. “There’s one more thing I should tell you.”
“What?”
“Miss Liu sent word that she has already rescinded your bounty. You no longer need to worry about that.”
Yan Xingyu froze. “She was that kind hearted?”
Guan Fei said, “I don’t think Miss Liu would send a message specifically to deceive you.”
“Fine,” Yan Xingyu muttered. “At least she finally did something good.” She turned to Jiao Yu, who was standing by the door. “Is the little one coming with us?”
Guan Fei answered, “Yuyu is coming.” She then thought of someone else. “Is Yi Rong coming with us?”
At the mention of that name, Yan Xingyu’s expression tightened. She acted nonchalant. “I don’t know where Yi Rong went. Don’t worry about her; we’ll go on our own.”
Guan Fei sensed the shift in tone and guessed something had happened between them, but she didn’t pry. “Then we’ll rest tonight and set out tomorrow.”
Yan Xingyu agreed. Seeing that Guan Fei looked exhausted, she didn’t linger. After finishing their business, she turned and headed back to her guest room.
As night fell, everyone sought to replenish their energy and went to bed early. Guan Fei waited for Jiao Yu to blow out the lamp. She was just about to pull the girl into her arms for some playful affection when a knock sounded at the door.
“Who is it?”
Both were confused. Who would be at their door at this hour?
Jiao Yu saw the lamp she had just extinguished flare back to life. Suddenly, a figure appeared in the room. Recognizing the face, she snapped, “Yi Rong, are you crazy? Disturbing people’s sleep in the middle of the night!”
“My apologies.”
Guan Fei heard the voice and asked, “Xingyu said you left. Why are you back?”
Yi Rong said, “I had a fight with her. I don’t know how to apologize, so I came to ask you both.”
Jiao Yu grumbled, “So you didn’t show up early or late, but you wait until now? What’s the point?”
Yi Rong’s eyes flickered. “I thought outside for a long time, unsure of how to face you. When I saw the lights go out, I felt I couldn’t delay any longer, so I came in.”
Guan Fei pulled Jiao Yu back slightly and said, “I see. Xingyu is soft-hearted and easy to talk to. Just go and apologize to her directly. I’m sure she will forgive you.”
Yi Rong looked hesitant. “I’m afraid she doesn’t want to see me.”
Guan Fei suggested, “I doubt that. Or, you could prepare a small gift for her to express your sincerity.”
Yi Rong nodded. “Do you know what she likes?”
Guan Fei thought for a moment. “That… I actually don’t know.”
Jiao Yu, for some reason, remembered the days when Yan Xingyu had taken her wandering after leaving Qingding Mountain. “Just give her money,” she said. “That’s what she needs most.”
Guan Fei couldn’t help but laugh. “Yuyu, how can you say that?”
Jiao Yu raised an eyebrow and huffed. “It’s the truth. If you asked her, she’d say the same thing.”
Guan Fei, realizing the other woman was indeed quite poor at the moment, smiled. “You can take Yuyu’s words as a reference, but perhaps think of something else, something you could do to make her happy.”
“Xingyu isn’t a petty person. Don’t overthink it. Just find a time for the two of you to have a good talk.”
Yi Rong seemed lost in thought. “Thank you,” she replied.
In an instant, the room went dark again. Seeing that she at least knew to extinguish the lamp before leaving, Jiao Yu refrained from further scolding. She muttered, “Why are those two being so awkward?”
Guan Fei heard her partner’s grumbling and laughed, pulling her into a hug as they lay back down. “Indeed. Our Yuyu is the best, cute, obedient and never throws tantrums with me.”
Jiao Yu felt something was off about that tone. She pinched the soft flesh at Guan Fei’s waist. “Do you really think so?”
Stung by a mix of pain and ticklishness, Guan Fei flipped over to pin her down. She caught the mischievous hand between them and kissed the fingertips gently. “Of course.”
She loved to take her time with her, feeling the soft lips slowly trace patterns against her. Jiao Yu, feeling comfortable, let her fox tail emerge, coiling it tightly around Guan Fei.
Guan Fei leaned in deep, whispering, “Yuyu is so good.”
