- Chapter 14 - The Fiancé Looks Like A Toad, And Toads Can’t Eat Swan
Douglas turned off the light screen and rubbed his temples. He closed his eyes and opened them again, repeating this several times. His eyes were sour and bloodshot; he had been working at high intensity in the office for a week straight without any rest.
Although an Alpha’s constitution was powerful and he could hold on longer, it was far from pleasant.
He drank a bottle of nutritional agent and rested his eyes for five minutes. His brain felt like it was buzzing, as if bees were circling him, making it impossible to sleep. He glanced across his desk, his gaze pausing for a moment when it landed on a paper document.
After a long while, he picked up the file and began flipping through it casually. This was Elan’s information. He had asked Bauhir to find it for him a week ago. At the time, Bauhir was busy with some matters that weren’t convenient to make public; the message was sent in the evening, but the file didn’t reach Douglas until noon the next day.
At that time, Bauhir had arrived travel-worn, tossing the file to him with a gaze full of resentment: “I am the King’s Chief Secretary, not a secretary for you, General Doge. You’re already a General—what’s stopping you from asking the King for a secretary? If it weren’t for our friendship growing up together, I wouldn’t bother with such unreasonable requests!”
Unfortunately, Douglas had been so busy with the school’s recruitment work during this period that after receiving the document, he hadn’t even opened it to browse.
Name: Elan Riemann
Gender: Omega
Mental Strength: S-rank
Constitution: A-rank (Formerly S+)
Educational Experience: Capital Star University (Dropped out) ……
Douglas raised an eyebrow. Elan’s mental strength and physical stats were quite good, nearly catching up to an average Alpha warrior. No wonder that pinch at the banquet the other day had hurt so much.
But what was with this constitution? Regardless of a human’s gender, constitution was almost entirely fixed after birth; it was nearly impossible for it to upgrade or downgrade.
And this educational experience… Douglas didn’t believe Elan had a personality that would let him act recklessly enough to fail school requirements. Given Alexia’s method of education, they wouldn’t have allowed a dropout situation to occur.
It couldn’t be that Alexia made Elan drop out just to go home and marry him.
Hiss. Douglas calculated Elan’s age—it was actually possible. An unpleasant feeling rose in his heart, but he shook his head to banish the thought from his mind.
He continued flipping through, but he disliked reading too many words, so he skipped over some parts with a quick glance.
The reason for Elan’s dropout wasn’t written in the back; instead, there was a pile of information about someone else—Elan’s former fiancé, Owen.
[Owen is the brother of Elan’s stepmother, Catherine. He has no blood relation to Elan, therefore marriage was permissible. When Elan was 7 years old, Alexia decided to arrange a betrothal with the then 23-year-old Owen.]
Stepmother? 23 years old?
Douglas felt as though he had missed something. He flipped back and, sure enough, saw a photo of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed man. It was indeed Elan’s former fiancé, Owen.
The man was extremely thin, so much so that his cheeks were deeply sunken. His entire head looked like a skull wrapped in human skin. His blue eyes were bright and bulging, like those of a deep-sea fish or the protruding white eyeballs of a frog.
Douglas: “……”
This fiancé was truly ugly. He looked like a toad.
As everyone knew, Elan was a sharp-tongued swan. It was only normal that a toad couldn’t eat swan meat, so it was also normal for the engagement to be cancelled.
He flipped back again and saw a photo of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Omega woman. Her temperament was elegant, with a gentle smile hanging on her lips, but her face was overly pale, as if she might be blown over by the wind at any moment.
This was Elan’s late mother.
Douglas looked back and forth several times. This data compiled by Bauhir was very complete; almost everyone involved had an attached photo. To be able to do this much under those circumstances, Douglas truly admired Bauhir’s work attitude and ability.
Now, he really felt that the question he asked Elan a week ago was quite stupid.
But… Douglas sent another message to Bauhir.
Douglas: Did you find the reason why he lost his status as an heir?
Bauhir: No.
Bauhir: I reckon it was intentionally wiped by someone. My permissions in the database aren’t high enough; I can’t find it.
Douglas threw the file onto the table, sighed, and continued working.
“The basic assessment begins. Time limit: 30 minutes. Those who kill more than 30 Zerg will pass the assessment.”
An electronic voice echoed in the simulated space. The students participating in the assessment were all wearing light mechs, standing on grid-like lines, quietly sizing each other up with wary eyes.
Adam scanned the black figures surrounding him. The expression under his mask gradually turned to disdain, and he let out a sneer. With his grades as the top graduate of the Imperial Military Academy, dealing with these competitors was more than enough. He even had the confidence to crush them, destroying the confidence of the other competitors so they would never be able to hold their heads up again.
“Even though he is a barbarian, he has fought on the front lines for many years and has ample combat experience. His ideas on training warriors are much more advanced than the Imperial Military Academy. You should go and learn; don’t let me down.”
His mother’s voice echoed in his mind. Simultaneously, the lights in the space turned from blue to red. The figures of those around him began to flicker like data streams, appearing and disappearing.
“Will, stay behind me in a moment,” Adam glanced at his younger brother beside him and warned.
Will had an ordinary Beta physique, far from being as tall and sturdy as an Alpha, and his combat ability was a level lower. Adam could guarantee he would pass the assessment with an absolute advantage, but he couldn’t guarantee the test results of his Beta brother.
Will gave a sound of affirmation upon hearing this, his hands inside the mech suit drenched in sweat.
Everyone was instantly transported to the simulated frontline scene. There was almost no gravity in the dark blue space of the universe. Even while wearing mechs, some people could not adapt to the sudden change in environment, struggling to maintain balance and floating in distorted, comical postures.
Such people would have almost no competitiveness in the subsequent struggle. After all, if a piece of trash couldn’t even maintain balance, how could they participate in combat and kill Zerg?
“The kill targets have been deployed. Good luck to you all,” the electronic voice rang out again.
Before the last syllable had even fallen, amber Zerg eyes suddenly lit up one after another in the dark fog, densely clustered together, making one’s scalp tingle.
From somewhere unknown, a scream suddenly erupted—
In the observation room, Fu Ling was operating the control center while Mo Nanshan and Douglas watched from the side.
“This is it?” Mo Nanshan couldn’t help but ask. He felt a bit of distrust toward this young girl dressed entirely in white.
Fu Ling gave him a neutral glance, her expression unchanged, and gave a light nod.
In front of the three of them were nearly a hundred light screens, recording the combat situation of every student participating in the assessment in real-time.
In the center were three larger screens, showing the top three in terms of kill count. On the right was a vertical screen where milky-white data streams fluctuated; the data streams tangled for a moment before settling down to generate a kill count leaderboard.
As the assessment had just begun, almost everyone’s kill count was zero. This made the only student who had already broken the zero mark stand out at the very top of the list.
1st Place: Adam Albert Points: 2
In just two minutes, Adam had already killed two Zerg. Of course, part of it was due to luck; after all, his random transport destination was closest to the Zerg. Almost as soon as he landed, he was surrounded.
Crisis, for the weak, is a dead end; for the strong, it is an opportunity.
Douglas looked at that name, for which he had no fond feelings, without showing any surprise. Adam was only “weak” in his eyes; that didn’t mean Adam wasn’t excellent in his own right.
Fifteen minutes had passed in the assessment, and Adam had already killed 28 Zerg.
But the number stopped growing at this point.
The moment Will landed, he activated the positioning system. His and Adam’s mechs had been modified by the Albert family to have a linked tracking system. His strength was weak, and since Susanna was determined to have him pass the exam, they had no choice but to use some other tricks.
When he reached Adam’s side, Adam’s mech was already covered in green Zerg slime. Adam used a laser sword to cut off a Zerg’s wing; the Zerg shrieked as its body fell.
Adam panted: “Pierce its heart, hurry!”
Receiving the command, Will’s body reacted before his consciousness. He operated the mech, and a blue laser instantly fired toward the Zerg’s heart. A large chunk of the greenish-brown mantis heart was instantly hollowed out, and its amber round eyes gradually lost their luster.
On the data statistics screen:
58th Place: Will Points: 1
Mo Nanshan also noticed this situation. There was some hesitation in his eyes as he looked at Douglas: “General, this…”
Douglas gave a cold laugh. Don’t be fooled by Susanna’s usual appearance of a quiet, elegant artist; in reality, her schemes were deeper than anyone’s. Last time, the list of teachers she provided were all half-baked with worrying skill levels. Now, she was cheating right under his nose—did she really think he was a pushover?
“Cancel his results.”
Fu Ling nodded, recording and saving that segment of footage.
“Only cancel Will’s? What about Adam? He is an accomplice to the cheating.” Mo Nanshan looked at the blonde Alpha on the screen with a look of pity. Although what Adam did wasn’t honorable, his combat ability was undeniable.
Douglas thought for a moment. “Cancel his score, but retain his admission eligibility.”
With Adam’s ability, he would likely rank in the top three of the final assessment if no accidents occurred. According to the regulations of the Imperial Special Academy, the top three of the assessment would receive special commendations—especially the first place, who would also represent the department to speak at the entrance ceremony. If Adam’s score was cancelled, he would lose the chance for commendation and the chance to speak, becoming just another ordinary student.
It wasn’t fatal, but it was enough to make Susanna Albert fume for a couple of days.
There was no need to offend the Albert family too severely. Giving a slap followed by a sweet date would leave people speechless; after all, they were the ones who started the trouble.
Mo Nanshan breathed a sigh of relief.
Just then, at the bottom of the leaderboard, a name began to rise slowly without being noticed. At this moment, it had actually climbed to the second-place position!
2nd Place: Mo Ting Score: 26
Douglas glanced at Mo Nanshan: “One of yours?”
Mo Nanshan chuckled twice, his laughter sounding quite kind and proud: “My grandson.”
Douglas didn’t ask further, but Mo Nanshan couldn’t help but continue: “If General Douglas hadn’t established the Imperial Special Academy, I’m afraid Xiao Ting would have had to study a different major. With Xiao Ting’s status as an Omega, it would likely be difficult to pass the entrance exam for Capital Star University, let alone the Imperial Military Academy—they don’t even accept Omegas.”
Douglas squinted his eyes at the black-haired Omega on the screen. He didn’t ask how a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Alpha like Mo Nanshan could have a black-haired grandson; instead, he caught onto a point in his words and asked: “The Capital Star University assessment is very hard for Omegas?”
Mo Nanshan sighed: “Yes, even with Xiao Ting’s aptitude, he might not necessarily pass.”
The educational history on Elan’s file surfaced in Douglas’s mind. He thought, so Elan is actually quite impressive.
If he’s so impressive, why did he drop out?
Douglas couldn’t figure it out.
